Software instruments not playing

I had to reload my hard drive after a re-format, in doing so my GB has been working funny. My software instruments play only as a keyboard, with slight variation despite what instrument is selected. It does this with or without the midi keyboard connected. I reinstalled it from factory disk and the problem still exists. Ideas?

Oops, I didn't read your entire sentence, I missed the last bit. I actually didn't realize you could use the onscreen keyboard while the Create DialogBox was open.
In fact, naughty GB programmers, that's a Modal Dialog, you shouldn't be able to use the onscreen keyboard while it's open.
But as you correctly posted, it does work

Real Instruments Not playing - effects are

In one of my songs, the real instruments do not play. However, I can hear the reverb and echo for these tracks. The tracks still respond to editing. The drum loop and Software Piano play just fine.

Thanks for the suggestions. I can't remember deleting any tracks... however, how would i check for "hidden" tracks?
The funny thing is i can hear the effect returns for the real instrument tracks...tracks that are heavily reverbed i can hear a faint echo of the track. and like i mentioned the drum loop and software piano still play fine.
And, I also see monitor activity in the real instrument tracks when i play the song. Everything looks normal, but of course, the sound isn't there.

P.S. I just tried Unsolo all tracks and Unmute all tracks... still the same problem.

Editing Software Instruments' Note Range?

Cannot find anywhere, how to shift the octave setting for individual software instruments!
I'd like to raise the bass up an octave, lower the keyboards, etc, but can not find a word about how to do this, anyone know????

No, I am not asking anything to know it's playing a bass line, as I'm talking about an imported midi file, so it's telling the bass to play bass lines, the keyboard to play chords, etc. And no, the range I have been talking about is NOT the one of the input device, as I was not using any input device.
I do not think what I am asking is very confusing, much less complicated.... Yet you keep telling me I'm asking this or that, none of which I asked....
How much clearer could I have been? I asked about importing a midi file, not playing an instrument, as obviously, I would simply play what notes I wanted, for each instrument.
2. I found the pitch slider on my own, thus have been able to finally do what I had been trying to find out all along, which was to simply adjust the pitch of specific software instruments. It sounds like you knew how to do that, but for some reason assumed I was asking about everything else but that.. Now, if you had just said that in your first post, this would have been resolved early this morning.

Software instruments wont play in arrange window

Hi,
I have recently purchased Logic Pro 9 from app store but when I select a new track as a software instrument there is no sound when playing samples in the arrange window.
The samples will play fine in the browser window and will also show up on the mixer levels when I give midi keyboard command but just no sound.
Audio tracks have no problems.
Any help would be appreciated!

The reason a Green Apple Loop can be played from a MIDI keyboard (provided it's set up correctly) is, a green loop loads an instrument.
To work with instruments on your own, without loops.

Open "Exploring Logic Pro" look at chapter 3. But really, read the whole thing if you have time. If the manuals aren't used most users never get beyond using 5% of Logic's capabilities.

Third party software instrument not outputting to right speaker?

Hi there. I know that third party support is not something I can expect to get much of here, but I figured I'd see if anyone had any suggestions anyway. I'm new to GarageBand, and am using the '8 bit' plugin from a Japanese band called YMCK (http://www.ymck.net/english/download/index.html). The plugin does seem a little buggy or incompatible with my system/GarageBand because I often get no sound and have to restart GarageBand, or (and I warn you if you try it) occasionally I'll get a loud, annoying tone until I restart the app as well.
Normally, however, it does what it's supposed to except for the fact that I am not getting any audio output from the right speaker for software instruments using this plugin, regardless of the panning I'm using. This is just kind of strange and I'm wondering if maybe there's something I'm missing, or perhaps someone else has used this plugin before (or would be willing to try it). Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Loops and software instruments not appearing in browser

Only a few software instruments appear in the software instrument list, even ones I have used before. Only a few loops come up also. Where did they go? They are in the GB folder in the Finder.

In the arrange window,dbl click on the instrument track you want,then the mixer window opens,again,dbl click on the instrument track(the button just above the out button below the I/O,{its the in/out area}) and choose from the drop down menu>choose mono or stereo etc,>logic>garageband
your Garageband instruments will be there,or should be.

OK,did you goto audio>loop browser ?I know its obvious,but i dont know how much you know so....that would be the first thing to do for the loops.

Garageband software instruments not in Logic Express

When I go into the Input popup menu of a tracks channel strip, none of the garageband software instruments are listed. It only shows the logic ones.
Why is this? Can you import them somehow?

My iTunes software is not playing my videos

TV show episodes that I just purchased and downloaded from the iTunes store will not play. The time-remaining ticker on the video screen shows the video moving along, but it's not playing. No video, no sound.

Repair your QuickTime.
Control Panel > Programs n Features > highlight QuickTime, click CHANGE then REPAIR.

Ipod nano updated with latest software will not play or charge on ipod dock

My ipod nano generation 4 is updated with the latest software version 1.0.4
It was playing and charging fine on my ipod docking station until the update.
Now however the ipod is unresponsive on the dock. neither charging or playing. I have tried it charging on the cord and playing on my headphones no issues.
any thoughts?

How do I write music notes for the software instruments to play? I got to the place to write the notes, but I can't make the actual notes show up on the chart. How do I do this?

Live Recording with mics and Software Instruments

Has anyone used the Software Instruments in GB to play live, while recording the Software Instruments direct and live (Real Instruments) as well?
I'm thinking about getting a FirePod or similar, to record my band live using several mics and playing and recording Software Instruments all at once. I'm concerned that this set up might have too much latency and make the Software Instruments not playable with my band live, and perhaps all this might make my iMac G5 bog down.
Anyone have any experiences with any or all of this kind of use of GarageBand with an audio/MIDI interface?

Sorry if I'm talking in circles. That post was early!
I'd like to be able to use the built-in Software Instruments live and record that MIDI as well as the live tracks at the same time. However, I could deal with using my own keyboards for the live sounds and just record the MIDI from them while recording the live tracks too, if that makes the system work. For instance, if the part I wanted was a piano, and the Software Instrument piano used too much processor power, I could "record" with a smaller instrument that wasn't such a hog. Then, in mixing, I'd use the Software Instrument I wanted for the keyboard part. Live, my real keyboard could provide the piano for all to hear.
Am I making sense yet?
I suppose one thing I could do is something I was thinking of doing already. I could get one of the $40 MIDI-to-USB interfaces to record with the band. Right now, I'm just using a stereo mic set up to record stereo into GB. I could add MIDI and see what happens. Heck, I could enable 6 more real instrument tracks at the same time and see what happens! Then I would know it was possible on the iMac at least.

Creative MediaSource will not play certain MP3

I have a Creative Audigy 2 NX with a remote that I really want to be able to use. Programs such as GIRDER, WinLIRC, and uICE do not support the RM-500 remote control.
I can't figure out how to control the remote beyond editing and creating key files that send ASCII commands, but the problem with that is I cannot control programs that are not currently acti've. In other words, I cannot control winamp if I'm playing a game with my remote, which is what I want to do. The KEY files are structured as this:[KeyEvent690 etc]KeyName=whateveryouwantdisplayedNotification=- or 2 or 4KeyEventRemap=this is the important partHandleByApp=i don't know what this doesAnyway, if I set notification to -, I can send ASCII commands-- BUT these will not send to programs not currently on top. If I set notification to 2, as Creative did in their Winamp .x key file, I could control the program even if it is not on top-- BUT I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE KeyEventRemaps NUMBERS SHOULD BE. I cannot find this information, and I have tested as far as I am capable of doing manually (tested numbers through 500 MANUALLY).So what I want to be able to do is use my remote to control winamp, but that is impossible. And Creative MediaSource will not play streaming audio (for God knows why...). So what I decided to do was record to an MP3 player with a third party program and play that MP3 in the Creative MediaSource software (the built-in recorder will NOT work, as I cannot structure that into a playlist nor can I play the recording media nor can I minimize the program and mute the feedback-- I can only record if I'm playing, and this doesn't work). The first problem I encountered was several programs would not output MP3s that were playable as they were being recorded, however I finally did find one. This program, 3aLab iRadio, allows the MP3 to be played back WHILE simultaneously being recorded. The only problem is that this the Creative MediaSource software will NOT play the mp3. Out of the 5 different MP3 players I tested, ONLY the Creative MediaSource software would not playback the MP3 as being written. I cannot figure this out, and I am at a loss as to what to do next. I realize that Creative won't support streaming audio with their player, MediaSource, but what I like to do is listen to streaming internet radio as an item on my mp3 playlist in winamp. I wish to be able to control this with my remote, but as I cannot find ANY WAY out there to control my remote as I wish without further information, this is a dead end. My alternati've is to use the Creative software for which the remote was designed to work, but unfortunately this does not support streaming internet radio nor does it support MP3s that are being written to. This is driving me insane.
What I want to be able to do is have a playlist that I control with my remote, with the first item on the list being internet radio, the 2nd and such on down being MP3s. In winamp, this is doable, as well as in Windows Media Player, and most MP3 players out there. Since I cannot do this in Creative's software, I need a workaround alternati've. PLEASE.
So, in conclusion, is there anyone out there who can either tell me how to control my remote directly by identifying what the notification=2 keyeventremap=configuarions are, give me a program like girder however which supports the RM-500 remote, or tell me how to get MP3s that are being written to (aka incomplete) to play in the Creative MediaSource software?

Polyphony- how many notes can play at one time with the software instrument

Hello everyone! Is the Polyphony limited in Garageband 3 when playing the software instruments? Is there a setting I should tweak? I noticed this when using the sustain pedal with the grand piano sound.

I can't give you exact figures, but GB does have problems with overlapping notes. It's weird sometimes - while it certainly can play a lot of notes at a time, like big chords, it chokes on melodies where the notes overlap. I don't know of any other fix than making sure that the notes don't overlap.

I do not see the user interface for the Logic software instruments. I can hear them play through my midi keyboard but I cannot see them to adjust parameters. Please advise.

Couple of things - you can open the interface for any instrument or plug-in by double-clicking its insert slot on the channel strip. You can configure Logic to automatically open the interface for a plug-in when you first instantiate it in the preferences. Go to Logic Pro > Preferences > Display > Mixer, and check the box for "Open plug-in window on insertion".
