Software Inventory - Unknown Install Location
Hello,
Running the SCCM Asset Intelligence report 'Installed Software on a specific computer (Report 02E)' shows a number of software titles with 'Unknown' in the 'Installed Location' column.
I have asked the user of a particular device to check a sample of such software titles to determine if they are actually installed. They say they do NOT appear to be. This is based on searching for executable files in the C: directory.
Choosing one example of the software that has an unknown 'Installed Location', (Visio Viewer 2010) I ran the SCCM report "Software registered in Add Remove Programs on a specific computer" for the chosen device. This report had
'Visio Viewer 2010' on it.
I then ran the report 'Products on a specific computer' for the chosen device and this did NOT have 'Visio Viewer 2010' on it.
My questions are:
Why are some software titles reporting as having 'Unknown' in the 'Installed Location' column?
Are such software titles actually installed on the device or NOT? The results of the reports I have run provide conflicting views of whether the software is or is not installed on the device.
If the software is actually installed on the device, why is nothing being returned in the 'Installed Location' field?
Thank you for your assistance.
AI reports depends hardware inventory classes. I hope you have enable "SMS_InstalledSoftware" class in AI.

Trying to download iTunes 64-bit version on my new Windows 7 PC. Getting the error 'could not locate "%APPDATA%". How do I get past this error? The software doesn't install. Appreciate if someone in the forum can help.
The backup and restore from the iCloud was a little unnerving since the restore erased all information from the iPod. The iCloud backup and restore took a long time, but worked. I was very grateful.
Trying again to backup to iTunes locally proved to be the same challenging problem. The same backup to corrupt file was the message. The status bar showing backup seemed to move faster to start, but then slowed to a creep toward the end before the error.
When trying to restore a backup in iTunes, the "Restore" button is grayed out since it is looking for a local copy. Any restore would need to be from the iCloud which already worked but isn't the final solution.
Your suggestions were good, I am just in the same boat. Any thoughts about doing the following?
1) creating a cloud backup
2) resetting the iPod to factory defaults
3) removing all traces of iTunes from my computer and
4) installing iTunes and setting up iPod from scratch.
This is the next thing on my list. -
Very simple question, how do you configure windows 8.1 to use a SD card / external drive as the default install location for software applications? Primarily interested in apps installed from the windows store. This should be available in the settings
charm within the windows store. This must have been overlooked in the development of windows 8.1 or is a bug.

The registry method does not work with 8.1. I found this out the hard way. Doing it on 8.1 will leave you reinstalling the OS if you didn't do a SRP beforehand. -

Access inventory without installing software on current machine
I have a Surface RT tablet and I cannot install the software on it. (Since there is no Spiceworks software on the Windows Store) So, how do I see my inventory without installing it on this tablet.
Case in point, when I try to click inventory, it tries to get me install the software, never allowing me to see my inventory. Please help. I feel like I'm looking in the wrong place.
I purchased this tablet to assist with remote management of my inventory. If I can't access inventory without installing to every machine I log in to, this feels like my inventory is being held hostage.
I'm sure this isn't the case. Your thoughts please?

Installing: Locating the software to update - check removable media
When updating our 10.4.6 Xserve to 10.4.7, Software Update seemed to hang indefinitely at about 85% complete with this message:
"Installing: Locating the software to update..."
SU would respond to nothing. Quit not available, et cetera. So, in desperation, I forced quit and hoped for the best. Machine restarted fine, but still at 10.4.6. So, ran Software Update again and began 10.4.7 install once more. Same error.
I was just about to open a service call on this when I heard the familiar "whirr, whirr" of our CD/DVD jukebox off in the background.
We have a PowerFile C200 with a recently installed beta driver (for Tiger). Well, it seems that Software Update wants to search all drives, including removable media, during the update process.
This means that SU was mounting and searching each of the 200 CD's and DVD's we had online in the C200.
I could force quit again, but have instead elected to allow things to follow their natural progression over time and see what the outcome is.
Advice: BEFORE OS X updates via Software Update, disable removable media sources other than the system drive whenever possible.

"This iPhone cannot be used because the required software is not installed"
Greetings,
I have a problem with my newly purchased iPhone 3G - iTunes will not recognize it, stating that "This iPhone cannot be used because the required software is not installed". Uninstall and reinstall iTunes, it says. I've done that several times, following the instructions for removal here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93698
Not working. The iPhone is recognized in Windows, and both the Apple Mobile Device and iPod services are running. I'm running out of options here - I managed to activate the iPhone on another computer, but I need to sync it with my own computer to make it usable.
I am running 32-bit Vista SP1 (fully updated) on a Travelmate 8200 laptop. iTunes version is the latest, obtained from Apple.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, my hair is turning gray over this.If it were me, I'd make sure to uninstall all 4 of those services mentioned in that link you provided. Then make sure you've downloaded the iTunes package from this link http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Make sure you install, and keep installed, everything in that package. In other words don't uninstall anything that the package installs. I don't know this for a fact, but I'm pretty sure that at the very least your system will need both iTunes (most recent version) and QuickTime in order for the new 3G phone to function properly. If you download from the link provided above, you should get the latest version of iTunes and QuickTime. Hope this helps.
Wooops, . If your location requires you to download from another link, then by all means go to it. I just noticed that you're from Sweeden.

I want to open a radio file that is .rm. I get a message that says I need additional Quicktime software, but I cannot locate what I need to download on the QT website. Anyone got ideas about how I can open this file?
Hi bert,
the ".rm" extension is created by 'Real Media' application.
The easiest way to use it is to install the 'Real Media' player:
1. RealPlayer BBC.app
2. RealPlayer 12.app
I have both installed & use them sometimes.
(The 'BBC' wersion doesn't have any adverts with-in the app.) -
Apps Install Location Doesnt do anything?
I had CS6 installed on my machine in the C drive (125GB SSD) This was done with the very first cloud installer.
I uninstalled it as I have a new SSD that I want my apps to be installed on. I just want my OS on the C drive.
I donwload the cloud manager software.
Go to the preferences menu and find the following options:
Apps: Install Location
Files: Folder location
Before I insatll any apps, I set both of these to point to my new SSD as that is the location I want to install apps in and files.
I then click on Photoshop CC to install.
I always installs on my C drive.
Why? What is the point of a preference to install in a different location if it doesnt do anything?
Has anyone managed to install Photoshop in any other drive than the C drive? If so How?
You cant even choose where you want to install the Creative Clud app?Changing product installation location in CC App
Launch CC app.
Click on the Setting in the upper-right corner.
Click Preferences-> App
Click on Change and then navigate to your desired installation location and select the folder.
Start the Install process.
When you change it in preferences it get stored, Please confirm Preferences-App is showing the location you specified or not.
Try re-launching your CC app again after changing the preferences.

Its really difficult to do get the installed date of the patches as there is no table available in SCCM DB to pull this info i had a requirement in the past but i was unable to do had done it via work around.
This can be done after editing of sms_def.mof file or else using the power-shell script in windows server 2008 where the powershell is a feature by default.
H/W inventory:
For the 2000 servers this has to be installed but if we enable this its mentioned it may utilize upto 100 % of the Memory during the h/w inventory you can check that in your SMS_DEF.MOF -
QuickFixEngineering you can see the warning.uickFixEngineering

Powershell script:

the warning for the quick fix engineering is not there on 2012 but there on 2007 hope the info help you to achieve your output.

Is it possible to query software inventory report for Oracle SQL developer installation?
Hi all
My company requires to generate a report of all kinds of Oracle database access tool. I can find Toad installation from Add/Remove Program and therefore can query for Toad.
However, Oracle SQL developer is using Java. I cannot see an entry for Oracle SQL developer from Add/Remove Program. Is there a way to query inventory for Oracle SQL developer installation?
Thanks a lot.
Regards
LicYou might be able to use software inventory to report on the version of sqldeveloper.exe.
As the app looks like just a zip you extract to a custom location that might be one method. -
Software Metering Report - Install base for all metered software programs - Returns 0
Hi All
I have an issue with one of the software metering reports, Install base for all metered software programs. when run it returns that the metered software is installed on 0 computers.
All usage reports seem to work correctly and I can see usage data for the monitored applications. But anything related to install base such as the one listed above and "Computers that have a metered program installed but have not run the program since
a specific date" either return 0 or are blank.
Any help will be greatly appreciatedHi All
finally found a fix to the problem. It was very closely related to what Gareth had mentioned regarding Asset Intelligence. The actual method of detecting if a program is installed is done through Software Inventory
Under Custom Client Settings i had enabled Software Inventory on client but never setup any rules to gather data. So i created a new rule for all *.exe files and around an hour later the report started to show up clients.
This blog post also describes the method of setting up software inventory correctly
Thanks to all the help and hopefully this will aid anyone else encountering similar problems -
Software Inventory and Reporting Services Seems Broken..
Some basic info...
Server 2012, SQL 2012, SCCM 2012 R2. All products up to date. Enviornment has been running for about 2 weeks, with all the test clients being brought in a few days after server install.
I went to run the report "Computers with a specific product" two days and when I went to select my product, there were no values, as if the inventory process wasn't working. I verified in client settings and also saw that hardware inventory data
was coming back. I can run any of the hardware related reports and they have data.
I did add a couple inventory classes (Installed Executable & Installed Software) to see if that would help, but it did not. I've forced policy updates and run inventories again, still blank. Looking at InventoryAgent.log, it appears everything looks
good. I see the 4 software classes reporting back.
There is probably something simple that I'm missing, but I can't found out what that is.
Edit: Forgot to post the InventoryAgent.log file... http://pastebin.com/AkTWQurpThis goes back to the basic definitions of what the two different types of inventory actually do. Software Inventory is actually a file inventory and by default in 2012 collects *nothing*. To have it collect information about exe's, you would add *.exe (preferably
scoped to just C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files (X86)) to the software inventory configuration. This enables ConfigMgr to gather data from the PE header of the exe files which in turn is used for the report you called out (and others listed as Software
Inventory).
The question though is do you truly want information about exes or do you actually want information about installed applications? Just because an exe exists does not mean an application is actually installed. That's where Add/Remove programs information
potentially comes in. Information in Add/Remove Programs is *not* collected by Software Inventory though -- as mentioned Soft Inv collect file information. ARP data is collected via WMI by Hardware Inv in ConfigMgr. To get this info, use one of the reports
that lists info from ARP. This is collected and is available by default.
ARP isn't the end all be all either and that's where Asset Intelligence comes in. AI is a layer of intelligence on top of Hardware Inv that collects additional details and adds reports that takes the raw ARP data and combines it with other evidence to give
you better information about "Installed Software". The AI reports are conveniently under the AI folder in the reports. AI is not however enabled by default so you must enable it.
Finally, even AI is not perfect because, as we all know users aren't actually the only bane of our existence but so are vendors who do non-standard things. That's where third-parties like BDNA come in come that provide even better interpretatin of the raw
data collected by ConfigMgr.

Rebuilding / reinstall of Leopard, looking for a software inventory tool
Hi,
I have been running A iMac from a tiger install then upgraded over the past 2 years and looking at doing a reinstall of leopard. However I want to make sure I don't loose any of my paid applications and there keys.
Is there a software inventory tool that will tell me what is installed, and possibly the install. EG windows belarc advisor use to provide this type of info.
Also when I do the re-install will the bootcamp partition be effected.
Is there a URL providing tips on doing a machine rebuild, as I couldn't find one in the discussion groups.
Thanks
ChrisO. OK. I would suggest waiting for Snow Leopard, but if you want to rebuilt now....
Go to the Apple on the top left of your screen, and select About This Mac. Select More Info. In System Profiler, on the left, scroll down to Software and select Applications. It will give you a list of every Application installed. You can click on one to get more info. If you want to keep this report, go to File > Save and save the report to the destination of your liking. -
Using Adobe's SMS Rporting Tool kit - Software Inventory
I’m using SMS Reporting tool kit ver 4.0, with SCCM 2007 R3. Is there a newer version?
1. How long would it/should it take for SCCM to query 2500 systems in SCCM for Adobe SWTAG files? The current scan has been running for about 3 hours now.
2. Will the SWTAG scan pick up more recent Adobe CS5/6 products?
3. I added SWTAG file collection in SCCM software Inventory. Inventory has run on many systems, but I cannot run a SCCM query to locate systems with these files. Does anyone have a SCCM query to find these systems with SWTAG files?
I have looked on other Adobe/Microsoft forums with little success.I have seen you have posted around the web about this. This forum is for Adobe Business Catalyast, their website CMS system.
Like others have said to you - I have also never heard about this.
You have the adobe file tagging which iuses SWTAG - http://blogs.adobe.com/oobe/2009/11/software_tagging_in_adobe_prod_1.html
But I know nothing of SMS reporting tool etc. What ever that is you need to contact the vendor for it.
