Software Licensing Questions

If I created a standard windows application (.exe installer) from LabView Student Edition (Which I have) or Professional (Which I am planning to purchase when graduated), can I sell my application without getting any legal problem?

I don't think the student edition includes the application builder.

  • Software Licensing Question.

Does Adobe Allow those individuals that has legal Photoshop lincensing on PC, to have it transferred to MAC? I've been using PS since 6.0 but now have decided to go Mac.

The steps required for a platform swap are here
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/order-product-platform-language-swap.htm l
Only the current version (CS6) can be swapped without requiring you to purchase a cross-grade.
As Bill suggests, a Cloud membership may be a good option for you since you can activate it on Mac and/or Windows for the same monthly fee.
Another option may be Photoshop Elements. Unlike Photoshop, the PSE serial number is cross-platform. No platform swaps required for PSE.
That said, there should be nothing stopping you getting identical results in Photoshop on Mac or Windows. The Retina display on the MacBook may be visually stunning. What do those same images look like on your PC?
Is your workflow and technique the same as your friend's?

  • Multiple Software Versions Question

Rookie question here.  My organization recently purchased a new copy of InDesign CS6 for me and one other employee.  We did NOT purchase Creative Cloud subscriptions, but hard copy licenses.  The software is working great and we love your product.  The problem we are having is in regards to other people in our organization trying to open our newly created InDesign Documents (CS6) with their older version of the software (CS5).  We do NOT have the option to upgrade the CS5 software licenses, so what are our options for those employees with CS5 to be able to view and edit documents created in CS6?  I'm assuming there is a way to save the CS6 documents as older versions, correct?  We all operate Windows PC's.  I greatly appreciate your help.

@Todd – the only way saving back is exporting to IDML from CS6 and open the IDML in CS5.
If this is a reliable workflow is questionable. You have to proofread the opened IDML in CS5. I recommend to export to PDF from CS6 as well and compare the PDF with the opend IDML in CS5.

  • "Windows cannot find the microsoft software license terms" Windows 8.1 Installation Error - Parallels

I'm trying to install Windows 8.1 via Parallels on my Macbook Pro.
I create a new VM and use the .ISO file and get the error: "Windows cannot find the microsoft software license terms. Make sure the installation sources are valid and restart the installation."
I found this question was answered here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/b1021d66-9774-4b5b-b50b-ad860c5ecc89/windows-8-enterprise-rtm-installation-error?forum=w8itproinstall
However, following the steps of the solution did not work for me. I created a blank VM and chose Windows 8.1. After this, it asks me to insert the installation disc. I cannot figure out how to use the .ISO as the source at this point. I tried copying and
pasting the path to the file and dragging the file to the VM, but no luck.
If there is a way I can install this without this error message or by somehow getting the path to the .ISO that'd be perfect.

    Hi,
According to your description, I would like to confirm if you have unchecked the Express installation box.
Be sure to uncheck 'Express Installation' when installing, otherwise Windows setup will fail with an error "cannot find license terms" and get stuck in a reboot cycle.
I suggest you refer to the following link to use Parallels Desktop to install Windows 8.1.

Regards,Typically, you don't license a version, you license a product and buy on-going support that allows you to upgrade any time.
But all licensing questions should be directed to your oracle sales rep, not a bunch of strangers on a forum. If oracle finds you in violation of your license, no one here will represent you.

  • T430s - Dialog Box Notification - BlueTooth Software License Not Found (2)

I have had my Lenovo for slightly less than a week.  Although installation appeared to run just fine,  I got an notifcation several days later that my BlueTooth Software License is not found.  I do have BlueTooth 3.0, but I do not know what needs to be done to resolve this message/error.
    Any thoughts?
    Kevin S.

    Hello Keslptp,
Are your blue Tooth drivers updated? I would suggest that step first, then if the problem still is around I would then un-install and then re-install the Bluetooth driver.
If you could post back and let me know how it is coming let me know and I will be more then happy to take the next step with you if these solutions don't work.

I had the same problem after doing a registry clean-up on my touchsmart iq518a, don't know why it worked but i fixed it by going to programs and features on the control panel and uninstalling the 'bluetooth by hp' program. Everything still works perfectly and that annoying message no longer comes up.

  • Final Cut Studio software license agreement

    Hi,
I have a question about installing Final Cut Studio on two systems - on one Mac Pro and one Macbook Pro. The software license agreement states that you can install and use one copy of the software on one desktop and one laptop.
Are there any issues with using the software simultaneously on each machine? I ask because I've heard of this issue with Microsoft Office.
    thanks.

Are there any issues with using the software simultaneously on each machine?
    1. The license specifically prohibits it.
    2. If both machines are connected to the same network, the second instance will refuse to launch.

  • Can't "OK"  Software License Agreement

    Stupid Question or Stupid problem
I can't click the "OK" (or yes) button to agree to the itunes Software License Agreement after v8 install.
I've shrunk the screen size to I can pull down the agreement box in the bottom right corner (to make it longer), but it won't let me pull it down. It just gives me the no no clicking sound. I can't see the box to even click it.
So can't get into itunes. Any suggestions??

Open the Control Panel, click on Displays, and set the monitor's resolution to at least 1024 by 768; if you're using a Mac, click on System Preferences in the Dock and open Displays from there.

    Regards,
MarkLicensing is a legal contract between Oracle and the customer. Therefore, all licensing questions should be directed to your Oracle marketing rep. If Oracle finds you in violation of a license agreement, an opinion you got from some stranger on the web won't be worth the pixels it was displayed in.

  • Solving easy as abc puzzle with python - License question

Hi everyone, I have just posted something about solving puzzles by programming and thought you could find it interesting. It is on http://arkocal.blogspot.com/2012/11/puz … s-abc.html
My question is, which licence fits such educational code? Thanks for any help and opinions.

I agree with Nisstyre56 that you'll want to pick a license that has been thoroughly vetted by lawyers (who hopefully specialize in intellectual property). I've come across some interesting custom software licenses (CRAPL is particularly amusing), but they'll do little more than communicate your wishes.
Creative Commons (CC) licenses are great for protecting self published creative works (e.g. artwork, music, personal websites, instruction material, etc). However, they should not be used for software (see Creative Commons FAQ). There are a lot of technicalities associated with licensing software; many of which derive from the numerous forms in which "software" can exist on a machine and be distributed. For example, if you distribute your source code under a CC license, and then the end user compiles it on their machine using their compiler, do the terms of the original license still apply to the machine code (or byte code)? If so, in what sense? What about linking to other libraries under a different license? Specialized software licenses (e.g. MIT, BSD, GPL, Artistic Licences, etc) address these issues. See OSI for a description of many open source software licenses.
When selecting a license, you should be mindful of the difference between a copyright and a copyleft license. Roughly speaking, a copyright license (e.g. MIT) allows for derivative work to be put under a different license, whereas a copyleft license (e.g. GPL) requires all derivative work to be put under the same license. Both can have important long term implications. For example, if you release your project under a copyright license, then you may find yourself competing against a proprietary fork of your own project. If you choose a copyleft license, you may have difficulty reusing your work in projects that require a different license.
Based on what I saw on your blog, I didn't see any links to any source code. All I see is a tutorial with code snipets. As far as the tutorial is concerned, I would expect the CC license to be sufficient. If you're planning to release small, example ("toy") programs, then I would expect that any license that provides denial of warranty and liability to be sufficient. However, if you want attribution for your work (e.g. if someone uses your source code in their own blog), then I would expect that you may want to seek something more specialized.
I am not a lawyer. My reply does not constitute legal advice.

  • Licensing question. Buying older components of OS X.

Licensing question. Buying older components of OS X.
My first question is where might I find an older version of imovie?
If you purchase OS 10.4 Tiger, are you entitled to download an earlier version of imovie such as imovie2, imovie 3 or imovie4 for no cost? Or must I also purchase iLife05 in order to instal any version of imovie? The reason I ask is that I remember that OS 10.1.5 use to have imovie included. Now imovie seems to be part of iLife which is a separate software package to purchase.
How and where might I find an earlier version of imovie? I ask this in terms of older computers that may run the older versions of imovie better than imovieHD.
Here is why I was asking:
I once spoke with someone at Apple who explained to me that if you purchase an OS from Apple, you are entitled to the software from earlier OSes. If I remember correctly, the example we were discussing was in terms of fonts. I must be certain to indicate that this is how I perceived the licensing issue and I could be incorrect in my understanding:
"If a user purchases an operating system from Apple, they are entitled to install any software from previous releases of the Operating system." For example, if a user purchases a second computer such as a portable computer, and then purchases mac os 10 for that computer, he or she may legally install any fonts that may have been bundled with any earlier Apple Operating Systems such as the fonts that came bundled with OS 8.5.
On Apple's web site is an area where one may download old software (old os systems) for free. These bundled fonts may be installed on as many computers as one would like because Apple offers them for free. You most likely would need to have purchased at least one of Apple's Operating Systems to be able to legally use the software from any earlier versions of your Operating System.
And so I would like to ask if this could be also considered in terms of OSX. If I buy Tiger, am I legally entitled to Panther on that same computer? This may be helpful for someone who would like to use Tiger as well as some older components of Panther. Maybe for some reason ical version 1.5 (in Panther) might be prefered over ical version 2.0 (in Tiger) due to some computer compatibility issue. Whether this is practical or not I am just outlining a theoretical example to help understand the specifics of Apple OS licensing.
And so I would like to ask this question in terms of imovie. How might I purchase an older version of imovie? May I purchase Tiger and then find an OEM version of Panther which I would then be legally entitled to install on that same computer? Or is there a place on the Apple website where users of Tiger are able to download older components from older OSX versions?
Or must I purchase the retail versions of both Tiger and Panther?
    Thank you for any clarification,

Thank you Allan and Dakota for jumping into this issue.
Allan, you have been very helpful with your comments and I think you have answered the question which is "no" (unfortunately). To summarize then, if you purchase an OS, you are not entitled to the components of an earlier OS - unless Apple makes it available free on their website. For example, if you purchase Tiger, you are not entitled to any components of Panther or Jaguar - even the older imovie that came with 10.1.5. It would be nice if Apple jumped into the discussion here to confirm this, however I am sure that is what they would say. Unless I hear otherwise I will assume this is also Apple's stance - that if you purchase an OS 9 (or application), you are not entitled to the components of an earlier OS (or application).
Dakota raises a good point also. However, unfortunately I see a small legal technical flaw with Dakota's procedure. Apple licences software per computer rather than per user. (I believe Adobe's licencing policy is the other way around - which I prefer.) And so technically iMovie 3.0.3 is only licensed to the Powerbook and cannot legally be copied to the iMac even if the iMac is running the latest version of iLife (and Tiger). You see, that was one of the key issues in this original post.
Personally I wish Apple would lessen the restriction on this policy with a clause in the licencing agreement allowing use of some earlier versions of applications (or OS components) to be used - especially the iLife components such as iMovie or iPhoto.
Licencing per user rather than per computer seems to be a little more practical for users in terms of promoting people to adopt the digital lifestyle considering many people have a workstation at home and also carry a portable on the road - well a little less costly anyways for the user. It would be nice if we were able to legally copy certain components across devices but that doesn't seem to be the case today with Apple. Perhaps Apple's licencing policy could be a hybrid model and follow some aspects of Adobe's licencing model. Here's an idea: allow users to pay for a "sub" licence for older apps. Everyone would benefit. Apple would earn more income from us and we would legally be able to use more Apple software on more devices. Just a few thoughts to share.

  • Reinstallation Acrobat Pro x, no legit software license

I bought a CS6 Design and Web Premium (windows 8.1), and somehow the Acrobat Pro X stops working out of nothing. The first time a deinstalled Acrobat Pro and reinstalled it, then again after a few weeks Acrobat Pro X stops working again. So After a few ##$%$@! words I deinstalled Acrobat pro again (without deactivating it) and tried to install the product again. The program didn't complete its installation progress because Adobe thinks it's not a legit software license.
    Please tell me how :
    - I can install Acrobat Pro X again with my software key
    - I can prevent Acrobat Pro X for stop working after a few weeks.

Hi Rave, thanks for your reply.
How do I go about posting the crash dump here?
And to answer your questions; I just installed Reader 11 and its working fine. As for Acrobat 11, I must've used a trial last year before we got CS6 because it is asking me to license it, so I cant test that unfortunately.
