Software loops sound different in Browser than in track window

After dragging some of my software loops (all .caf's) from the browser to the track window, the sound does not play correctly. For example, a harpsichord in the browser sounds fine, but when I drag it into the track space, the resulting midi-file sounds more like some type of an organ when played. I'm using the same key and tempo.
If I play (doubleclick) the .caf from the "Apple Loops for GarageBand" library file, it plays fine from QT Player. This is only apparent on some loops...not all.....I do have a midi keyboard attached, but the same thing happens if it is disconnected.
Thanks for any help!

Try and Re-Index all your Loops?
Go to your Loops Library, and right click in the actual loops section at the bottom where it shows all your loops. Click on the Re-Index User Library. That should put everthing in place again, if you still have all the files.
P.S.
My loops were also sounding very funny, almost chorus like. When I'd put the loop into my timeline it would sound normal. Once I re-indexed everything the files sounded fine again, in both the Loops Library and on my timeline.
Good Luck

  • MIDI Loops sound different in preview

I'm a new user to Logic, and I'm confused about the green (MIDI) loops. When I preview one it sounds one way, but will sound different when I drag it to my arrangement, even when having it create a new track. On many of them it sounds like it's just missing some reverb, but the change is more drastic in others, eg. "Desire A Cellos", where it sounds like the wrong samples have been loaded.
Also I noticed that it loads instruments like "strings" and "piano" where I would expect it to be using the more sophisticated EXS sampler.
    Is this normal?
If I listen to a loops like "Concert Hall Piano 4" it sounds way more realistic in the preview than it does when I let it play the MIDI in my track. My first thought is that this must be because the "Piano" instrument doesn't know how to handle the extra midi data such as expression.
Is anyone else having this problem, and what can I do to fix it?
    Thanks,
    -Emil

To answer this question, loops are created to be used with Garageband, so all of the instruments selected will use Garageband instruments.
The other more important question....I DON'T KNOW! Great question, I'm having the same issue with mine. I hope someone can shed some light on this. If you double click the 'strings' instrument in the channelstrip where you have your 'Desire A Cellos' and select the 'Cellos Pizzicato' preset instead of the 'Cellos' preset that is selected, you get much closer. It seems like it has defaulted to the wrong setting. Your right though, there's definitely some verb there too. And also, if you then change your song key, the loop in the arrange window should change with it, but mine is not.
HOWEVER....If you drag a GREEN loop into an audio channel instead of a MIDI channel, it will create an audio file loop (like the blue loops). As far as I can tell, they sound exactly as they should, and they do change keys. Still though, very strange. Perhaps tis a bug??

  • Midi Apple Loops sound different when dragged on to song

When ever I drag a green midi loop from Apple Loops to my song it sounds different. All the effects are gone. I tried to put som reverb on it but it doesn't sound like it does wheyn played in the Apple Loops bar.
How can I use the green midi loops from Apple Loops as they sound there with that effect. The blue audio Apple Loops works fine.
I had this same problem in Logic Pro 9

There are some differences between the audio file previews contained in the loop and the actual data, sometimes by error, sometimes intentionally so.
For instance, if you preview an orchestral instrument, you hear it with reverb, as that's kinda how it's intended to sound, but when you drag it into Logic proper, you don't get reverb - because you will have one global reverb you send all the orchestral instrument too, rather than a hundred individual reverbs on each instrument.
Stuff like that. It varies, but there's nothing broken as such.

  • My Sine Wave File sounds different in Logic than iTunes

I am working on creating musical compositions with embedded sine wave patterns (which I am generating in a foriegn application). These sine waves are designed to entrain the brain to different frequencies to facilitate in stimulating meditative states of consciousness in the listener.
Unfortunately, when I import my sine wave audio file (in .wav format) Logic changes it and the rhythm is frequency is twice as fast! When I play the file in iTunes it sounds just the way I generated it, but when I import it into Logic through the audio bin or simply drag and drop onto the arrange window, it sounds different and cannot work for the precise control I require for my compositions.
Does any one have any idea why this is happening or what I can do to import my audio file without changing it?
Thank you so much for any ideas/assistance,
    Devlin Dewitt Donnelly

    Hi DD Smooth,
you should check sample rate settings on your original audio files and make them match the sample rate settings on your logic project prior to importing them. Sounds like you are generating 48khz .wav files in your foreign app and Logic must be set to 44.1khz by default. Or the other way around

  • Swing applet looks different in browser than in applet viewer

I'm developing an applet using Net Beans 5.0. When I run the applet in the applet viewer I get a totally different look and feel than when I run the applet in a web broser. The background colors are different, the buttons are a totally different style and color, and some buttons that show up essentially transparent in the applet viewer are totally opaque in the browser.
The applet viewer is the one that looks like the interface that I designed in the Net Beans GUI builder, so can anyone tell me how I make it look the same in a Web Browser?

It looks like you're right, so how do I ensure that
my applet will look the same on different versions of
JVM? There's got to be a way, right??yes. you should look into javas pluggable look and feel system.
the cross-platform (java) look and feel changed dramatically between versions 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5.
however, if you use another look and feel, such as motif, or perhaps your system's look and feel (windows, mac, etc), the program should look pretty much the same (perhaps a little different, but not like the differences in the Java look and feel).
if you want to be COMPLETELY sure that they will always look the same, select a third party look and feel that comes packaged in a jar file that you are free to distribute with your applet.
Some good third party look and feels are JGoodies Plastic, and Incors Alloy. And there are others.
if you use one of those, it should look pretty well the same on all platforms, and in all JVM's.

  • Flash Player Renders Images Differently in Browser than Stand-alone Player

    Hey, guys!
Not sure if this is a Flash issue or a Flash Player issue, but here we go...
I`m currently working on a Flash project with a great deal of images.
Flash does a great job compressing images, but in some cases it messes up the colors.
I have a big image on the background and it`s set to 80 compression from the Properties panel.
Everything looks fine in the stand-alone Flash Player when exporting from the IDE or even opening from disc, but when I insert the SWF in a HTML page (with SWFObject, dunno if it matters) some werid artifacts show up, and also the colors get shifted to slightly different values (I can tell since I have a background that should match the SWFs background!)...
There is a workaround, though. Setting compression to Lossless... Then everything looks EXACTLY the same both in the stand-alone player and in the browser. Just that you end up with a 900 kilo image instead of 200 and something... :|
And if you have several images that have to be treated "Losslessly", you end up with a pretty big SWF!
My other workaround was to sample the colors in the browser and modify the ones in my CSS for the HTML background.
That works well for the colors, but I still end up with some ugly artifacts, even when compression is set to 100!
And, again, the strange thing is that in the stand-alone player, everything is honkey dorey, the colors and all!
NOTE: the project I`m working on is a Flash 10 file, ActionScript 2, if that would matter...
Thank you for your time and I appreciate any suggestion/explanation!
    Alex

i've had a problem before with the fps and a mac.
    how big is your file?
i usually make my movies around 24 fps to keep load off of
the cpu which could make it run slower

  • Looks different in browser than in Dreamweaver, why?

    Hi all,
I'm trying to get used to Dreamweaver CS3 after moving from GoLive (and its simple, easy layout grids) and can't even get a simple table to behave the way it looks while editing.
    Here's what I see when I'm editing:
    http://yarnlady.com/in.dreamweaver.jpg
And here's how it looks in a browser (Safari on OSX for me):
    http://yarnlady.com/index-test.html
You'll notice a white strip above the banner, even though I've been careful to set everything I can find to align top, not wrap, etc.
To beat the dead horse once more... why did I have to give up the layout grid that I've been using been since CyberStudio?
    Thanks so much in advance!

Remove the P tags from this line (Hilited in red), no need to center the banner if the banner and table are the same width. The P tags will cause your white space in a browser.

  • Windows software synth sounds bett

Just bought a Creative Audigy off of eBay and installed it in my system.
I have loaded a couple different general MIDI soundfonts, and I can tell that they each sound different so I'm confident they are working properly. However, I noticed while using the DirectX diagnostic utility that the Windows software synthesizer sounds about 5x better than the hardware synthesizer on the Audigy. Am I doing something wrong?

You may find some files on some of the Logic boards (I know I stuck a few presets up on http://www.proapptips.com).
Why not roll your own? That's half the fun.

  • Midi loops in browser sound different in arrange window controller messages

I have a problem with controller messages as well with fx
I audition a midi loop it has FX and then drag it to arrange window
sounds different, I know of ther is another topic about the FX,
But as well controller messages not being read right
say a Timpani loop, foot controller is not reading
so the timpani roll is gone

This is not a problem, it's intentional design.
The preview audio contains reverb for these instruments, because the sound is in context - it let's you hear it how you are typically going to use it, and use can use it as an audio loop without problems.
When you load it as MIDI, it does not add another reverb to the channel because it assume you are going to use a global reverb, rather than add individual reverbs per channel - this is the generally better way of doing it, and avoids new users having a hundred reverbs on individual channels when they only need one.
As for articulations switched by MIDI, the preview audio can contain only one sample, but if there are different articulations, they need to be played/switched accordingly.
It's not a bug, it's the way it works for flexibility in the main. You have to remember, that when stepping up from a entry-level program to a professional one, a lot of hand-holding that the entry level programs do is no longer there, and so you can feel like the pro version is "less good" than the entry one. This is not the case - professional users do not need hand-holding, and that generally gets in the way.

  • Software loops playing a different sample

My friend has an issue with his Garageband 3, where any software loop will play correctly in the loop browser, but when dragged into the main screen, it will always play with a synth sound. I verified that he is dragging into a blank area (that says drag apple loops here) that will crate a NEW track, (not on top of an existing track that has a different setting), but any kind of (software instruments) loop, will always play with the same synth sound. Does not happen with real instrument loops.
I thought if you dragged a loop to where it made a new track, it would keep the default attributes of the loop you are dragging and apply them to that track, and only after that, you can tweak and mess it up all you like.
I couldn't recreate his problem. I am going over there this weekend to take a look at it, and I was thinking about trashing the Garageband prefs, and the Loops index and reloading the loops in case it was that kind of problem, but is there some way he could have messed with a default setting for each new software instrument track?
One thing was funny, is that when he goes to the track menu and chooses new track>software instrument, the default is not Grand Piano, it is iDrum... I would think that would have something to do with it EXCEPT that he is getting a synth sound with the drag and drop method, not an iDrum kit. Just thought I'd throw that out there since it was another difference from the norm.
Any suggestions would be appriciated, I only record live and don't really use loops myself...
    Message was edited by: newutopian

Well, what's freaky is that they play correctly in the loop browser, so they must be installed. For some reason when they are moved into the timeline, that's when they lose the relationship to where the instruments are located and use a generic/default instrument in it's place.
When I reinstall, that is going to put them back in the default location on the hard drive and I am just going to have to copy them over again, and recreate the links, it's seems like it might be a waste since the actual instruments are there, and I should just work on fixing the links. I remember getting an error when setting it up that asked me where the Instrument library was located, and I located it. I might need to get that up again... any other input is welcome.

  • Strange!  Loops sound bizarre in Loop Browser - but not the original CD

    Hi,
Just bought Jazz Essentials from Beta Monkey Music... Apple Loops from a Third Party. I put in the CD - and dragged all the folders at once into the Apple Loops Browser. Took awhile to copy...
All the loops sound like they are going through a gated reverb or a delay - really bizarre - and not very pretty to listen to. Yet, when I listen to samples from the CD - no reverb - and no bizarre-ness.
Suggestions? I probably should drag one folder at a time - right? But, if so - how do I delete all these bad loops now?
    Thanks in advance!

You won't believe this - it's still not working!!!!
Still sounds bizarre - I did everything you said... thanks anyways...
    This is so strange!
There is a "full sample" with each new set of samples - in other words - the original 3 minutes sample that the smaller, cut up samples were taken from: these 'full' samples sound FINE... it's the cut up ones that sound strange as heck.
Remember - they sound fine on the CD... so odd.

  • Page appears different in browser

I am responsible for updating my company's website in dreamweaver and am having problems with the layout.  The main page is at this link: http://teom-bfms.faa.gov/.  If you are unable to see it, let me know and I'll send you a screenshot.  There are a few glitches with the layout but the thing that concerns me is the first column is much wider than the other two.  It looks fine in dreamweaver but is distorted in the Explorer browser view (that's what we use here).  I have attached the code to this email so I'm hoping someone can explain to me why it looks different in the browser than in Dreamweaver.  Just so you know, I'm a real novice when it comes to this so I may ask a lot of additional questions.
Anyway, here's the code for my page:

<p class="style1">The Toys for Tots message, that someone cares and that there is hope for the future, has motivated countless youngsters throughout the nation to grow into responsible, productive and patriotic citizens.  They are the leaders of tomorrow.  Toys for Tots make a difference - it has a positive impact on lives and the communities it serves.  While Toys for Tots is a nationwide effort, it is a community based program.  The toys you contribute will be distributed locally to the underprivileged children who might otherwise be overlooked during this holiday season. The campaign will run from December 7, 2009 through December 17, 2009.</p>
<p class="style1">As they have for the past 16 years, volunteers from the Office of the Associate Administrator for Airports will coordinate the FAA Headquarters Toys for Tots drive.  They will be on hand to collect toys from boxes located on the 2nd floor of the Orville Wright Building (FOB-10A) and Level A (cafeteria) in the Wilbur Wright Building, FOB-10B. </p>
<p class="style1">Toys should be unwrapped so that they can be sorted by age and gender.  They should be appropriate for children up to 17 years of age.  Items for older children are always in greatest demand. </p>

                <p align="center" class="style29">Lotus Notes Upgrade Launched</p>
<p align="left" class="style1">The Messaging Services team is eager to remind you that the Lotus Notes 8.0.2 upgrade was launched October 26th and will continue through April 30, 2010. As schedules develop and become available from each Line of Business (LOB), the <a href="https://ecenter.faa.gov/appspub/national/nd8webcommo.nsf/ND8Communications?OpenPage" class="style103"><u>ND8 Communications</u></a> site will be updated to reflect the changes. Remember that individual LOBs will control their own implementation schedules, so we encourage everyone to visit the site frequently and find out when the upgrade is happening in your area.</p>
<p align="left" class="style1">Now for the important stuff. In order to better prepare for this major upgrade, we highly encourage all employees to take training, especially our new and exciting user online training offerings! For those really excited enthusiasts, feel free to browse supplemental training links, web casts, sneak previews, and schedule updates available on the <a href="https://ecenter.faa.gov/appspub/national/nd8webcommo.nsf/ND8Communications?OpenPage" class="style103"><u>ND8 Communications</u></a> site.</p>
              <p align="left" class="style1">Meanwhile, let's take a moment to highlight some of the upcoming features...</p>
<p align="left" class="style1">As promised, the new Lotus Notes 8.0.2 software will offer an updated, more intuitive interface with embedded Sametime, conversation threads, in-line spell checking, and Sidebar features, just to name a few. You will encounter some major changes in the layout and experience new enhancements that simplify business processes.</p>
<p align="left" class="style1">One of the first noticeable changes is the new Sidebar tool located on the right side of the screen. The Sidebar displays embedded Notes applications and more importantly, fully integrates Sametime 8 within the Notes client. After the upgrade, you will no longer have to launch a separate Sametime client! Other helpful Sidebar applications include the Day-At-A-Glance feature which summarizes calendar entries in a single-day view, and the option to add RSS feeds.</p>
<p align="left" class="style1">Even for those who travel or work off-site, the new DWA-iNotes Lite version of web mail allows you to access email more quickly and efficiently. Easily switch to the full version, when your work requires more robust tools.</p>
<p align="left" class="style1">The wait is almost over, so be sure to take advantage of the available training and learn about the exciting benefits before everyone else. Experience the desktop of the future today! </p>

    Server Not Found.
Is this an intranet site?  Did you inherit this mess?  I don't mean to be rude or sarcastic but this code is terrible. I'm amazed that this is being used on a dot GOV server.  I suppose if the public can't see it, it doesn't matter to the FAA that this site is a web accessibility and maintenance nightmare.  100+ redundant .styles on a single web page.  That has to be a new record.   If this site were in my charge, I'd recommend a total rebuild.
Anyway, in an attempt to answer your question, 90% of display problems are code related.  Use the links below to check your code and fix all reported errors.

  • How Can I Turn A Software Loop Into A Real Instrument Loop?

My primary reason for wondering about this is that one of my songs requires a windchime sound throughout...but not too much of one. Just a touch of windchimes. The Orchestra Kit has a few pretty good windchime sounds BUT the natural sustain is too long for what I want. If figure I can get my wisp of a windchime if I can convert my miniscule software loop into a real instrument loop then whittle it down to the sound I want.
How can I make this conversion?

Well, Hangtime...You were absolutely right (again!) about messing around with the notes preferred over dissecting them.
I got an absolutely gorgeous windchime sound from applying a couple of carefully auditioned filters and then messing around with the volume at the end of each note. It actually turned out better than I had imagined. It turned out so very nice that I gave it a well spaced looping rhythm and now the windchime is throughout the entire song and the song is better for it.
My dissection effort didn't get a natural sounding windchime effect at all. I trashed it almost immediately.

  • Why is optimizer different in sql than in pl/sql?

Hello, I am running Oracle database 9i, it is running on an On-Demand hosted server, its purpose is to serve our Oracle Payroll application.
I have a certain query, and first tried it as a stand-alone query. It displayed the results almost immediatly.
Then I inserted the exact same query in a pl/sql block. It took more than one hour and canceled it. By looking at the session browser in TOAD, I saw that it was stuck on that query.
I also saw that the explain-plan for the query changed drastically from running as stand-alone sql to running inside pl/sql.
Why is this happening? How can I avoid this?
Please note that I do not intend to use optimizer hint since the indexes are built by oracle On-Demand and not me, so I don't know which indexes exist.
Here is the explain plan when running from stand-alone SQL:
Operation Object Name Rows Bytes Cost Object Node In/Out PStart PStop
    SELECT STATEMENT Optimizer Mode=CHOOSE          1           65
    bq. SORT AGGREGATE          1      72
bq. bq. TABLE ACCESS BY INDEX ROWID     HR.PAY_ELEMENT_ENTRY_VALUES_F     1      13      4
bq. bq. bq. NESTED LOOPS          1      72      65
bq. bq. bq. bq. MERGE JOIN CARTESIAN          1      59      61
bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. TABLE ACCESS BY INDEX ROWID     HR.PAY_ELEMENT_ENTRY_VALUES_F     1      13      4
bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. NESTED LOOPS          1      36      33
bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. TABLE ACCESS BY INDEX ROWID     HR.PAY_ELEMENT_ENTRIES_F     1      23      29
bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. INDEX RANGE SCAN     HR.PAY_ELEMENT_ENTRIES_F_N50     44           3
bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. INDEX RANGE SCAN     HR.PAY_ELEMENT_ENTRY_VALUES_F_N50     9           3
bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. BUFFER SORT          1      23      57
bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. TABLE ACCESS BY INDEX ROWID     HR.PAY_ELEMENT_ENTRIES_F     1      23      28
bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. INDEX RANGE SCAN     HR.PAY_ELEMENT_ENTRIES_F_N50     44           2
bq. bq. bq. bq. INDEX RANGE SCAN     HR.PAY_ELEMENT_ENTRY_VALUES_F_N50     9           3
And here is the plan when running inside pl/sql:
Operation Object Name Rows Bytes Cost Object Node In/Out PStart PStop
    SELECT STATEMENT Optimizer Mode=CHOOSE 1 293463
    bq. SORT AGGREGATE 1 48
    bq. bq. MERGE JOIN CARTESIAN 1 M 56 M 293463
bq. bq. bq. MERGE JOIN CARTESIAN 78 3 K 3771
bq. bq. bq. bq. MERGE JOIN CARTESIAN 1 34 57
bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. TABLE ACCESS BY INDEX ROWID HR.PAY_ELEMENT_ENTRIES_F 1 17 29
bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. INDEX RANGE SCAN HR.PAY_ELEMENT_ENTRIES_F_N50 44 3
bq. bq. bq. bq. BUFFER SORT 1 17 28
bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. TABLE ACCESS BY INDEX ROWID HR.PAY_ELEMENT_ENTRIES_F 1 17 28
bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. INDEX RANGE SCAN HR.PAY_ELEMENT_ENTRIES_F_N50 44 2
    bq. bq. bq. BUFFER SORT 15 K 107 K 3743
bq. bq. bq. bq. TABLE ACCESS BY INDEX ROWID HR.PAY_ELEMENT_ENTRY_VALUES_F 15 K 107 K 3714
bq. bq. bq. bq. bq. INDEX RANGE SCAN HR.PAY_ELEMENT_ENTRY_VALUES_F_N1 15 K 39
    bq. bq. BUFFER SORT 15 K 107 K 289749
    bq. bq. bq. TABLE ACCESS BY INDEX ROWID HR.PAY_ELEMENT_ENTRY_VALUES_F 15 K 107 K 3714
bq. bq. bq. bq. INDEX RANGE SCAN HR.PAY_ELEMENT_ENTRY_VALUES_F_N1 15 K 39
As you can see, the cost goes way up when running inside a pl/sql block.
Thank you very much for your help.

Added indentation. Sorry for that, I didn't realize copy-paste didn't work well here.

    I meant to add,
Why is optimizer different in sql than in pl/sql? It is not different, it is the same optimizer.
If you replace bind variables with literals then you have a totally different query, with much more information available to the optimizer. If you are seeing the same statement with the same literal values get a different plan within PL/SQL than in SQL*Plus or TOAD etc then there must be something else different. Unfortunately there is a lot less diagnostic info available in 9i (and I don't have 9i around to test on). Perhaps you can get a 10053 trace from each session and see if you can see what is different.
btw I still can't read the execution plan. There is more information in the DBMS_XPLAN output, and it needs to be formatted using ** tags or equivalent HTML.

  • Apple loops sound warblely

When auditioning apple loops in LP8 from the loop browser I've noticed that some loops sound warblely, as if they are being stretched out too much, even when they are playing at the original tempo. What gives?

I'm having a similar problem with my Ipod. When I put a cd in and listen to it, it sounds fine, but then when i import songs on to ITunes, the warble appears in the background for some odd reason. It also transfers on to the Ipod itself so that you can hear the warbling on the songs on the Ipod. Looked at a couple of pages that supposedly had solutions, but nothing helped. What should I do? Thanks!!!
