I'm getting the following error message when attempting to invoke "Find My Mac"
Some configurations such as a software or hardware RAID do not support a recovery partition and can't be used with Find My Mac.You have no recovery partition. This is a normal condition if your boot volume is a software RAID, or if you modified the partition table after running Boot Camp Assistant to create a Windows partition. Otherwise, you need to reinstall OS X in order to add a recovery partition.
If you don't have a current backup, you need to back up before you do anything else.
You have several options for reinstalling.
1. If you have access to a local, unencrypted Time Machine backup volume, and if that volume has a backup of a Mac (not necessarily this one) that was running the same major version of OS X and did have a Recovery partition, then you can boot from the Time Machine volume into Recovery by holding down the option key at the startup chime. Encrypted Time Machine volumes are not bootable, nor are network backups.
2. If your Mac shipped with OS X 10.7 or later preinstalled, or if it's one of the computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery, you may be able to netboot from an Apple server by holding down the key combination option-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
3. Use Recovery Disk Assistant (RDA) on another Mac running the same major version of OS X as yours to create a bootable USB device. Boot your Mac from the device by holding down the option key at startup.Warning: All existing data on the USB device will be erased when you use RDA.
Once you've booted into Recovery, the OS X Utilities screen will appear. Follow the prompts to reinstall OS X. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
If none of the above choices is open to you, then you'll have to start over from an OS X 10.6.8 installation. There's no need to overwrite your existing boot volume; you can use an external drive. Install 10.6 from the DVD you originally used to upgrade, or that came with the machine. Run Software Update and install all available updates. Log into the App Store with the Apple ID you used to buy 10.7 or later, and download the installer. When you run it, be sure to choose the right drive to install on. -
Disk Utility: Software mirror message behavior
Dear readers
I did setup a Mac Mini Server the following way.
Disk Utility stared from the System DVD.
- Delete both internal drives
- Create a mirror inside disk utility
- Make two partitions on this newly created drive
- Installed the system
- Configured it after update
So far every thing works fine.
My question is now,
- how does the system announce the information, that the mirror is broken because of a defect of one of the mirrored drives?
- if there is such a message, is it possible to use this message inside a script which would send a report to a known email account if something goes wrong?
- has someone done something similar or how doe administrators of bigger systems (like Xserve) handle this?
Thank you for anyones response and tips
Kind regards from Switzerland
ThomasHi !
MacOS X perform doesn't perform information on Software Mirror Status…
You must perform a shell script for that…

Mac mini hard disk keep crashing
The hard disk of my Mac mini has been replaced twice during the one year warranty period. It crashed again recently and I was unable to reformat or reinstalled the OS as suggested in the manual. I worry if my Mac mini was not due to hard disk problem alone as Apple products can not be that unreliable where by you need to change hard disk every coypu pole of months. And now the warranty period is over and wonder how Apple can help me in this matter.
Question mark icon flashes when I boot up the Mac mini. When halfway copying file under the recovery method suggest in the manual, error appeared and can cannot continue copying the file. In some of the trials, HD no longer seen by the Mac. I am quite new to the Mac, and not sure which SMART error you are referring to. I may try to approach regional service centre in Singapore. Thanks for your info.

Can I put all 4 disks in my Mac Pro in a single RAID 1 set?
Can I put all 4 disks in my Mac Pro in a single RAID 1 set? I have tried DU but it will not let me add the disk that holds the OS. Machine is brand new. I am looking for one big disk.
Any help would be appreciated!!
I am on OSX 10.5.4Yes, but since it will wipe out everything on all four drives, you have to use Disk Utility on the install DVD. Be sure to have another drive for backup with another copy of OSX. You can't do firmware updates from OSX on a RAID set.

RAID on Mac mini Server (2011 i7)
I just purchased a new Mac mini Server today (the base configuration 2011 Quad Core i7 with 4GB RAM and 2x 500GB 7200RPM magnetic hard disks) and wanted to share what I've learned about setting up RAID on the system.
First, as you may have heard, the Mac mini Server does not include any installation/reinstallation media (I was hoping for a USB reinstall key, but it seems that the new systems don't include these or optical discs; last year's Mac mini Server included handy reinstall DVDs even though the system didn't have an optical drive). Out of the box, the new Mac mini Server has Mac OS X Lion, the iLife suite, and the Mac OS X Lion Server tools pre-installed on one of the two 500GB internal drives; the other disk is formatted as a separate, second drive.
If this is the configuration you're looking for, you're good to go right out of the box. As an aside, this shipping configuration is ideal for using the second disk as a Time Machine drive. I would argue that Time Machine would be a better use of the second volume than a RAID 1 configuration, as Time Machine provides versioned backups and you don't incur the write performance penalty RAID 1 requires every time data is saved to the disk. I would further caution that, while an internal Time Machine disk is a convenient safety measure, any critical data should be backed up outside of the system as well.
Now for those like me who were intrigued by the opportunity to mate the Quad Core i7 with a RAID 0/striped configuration for a performance boost (or if you want to use RAID 1), a RAID configuration is possible, but it there are a few caveats.
First, Apple has two recovery options for the new Macs: a small hidden recovery partition on the boot drive and their Internet Recovery system. While it's possible to boot other systems from a Lion installation DVD extracted from the App Store Lion installer, such bootable optical discs will not boot the Mac mini Server at this time (this may change if Apple modifies the App Store Lion installer). Therefore, as of right now, the recovery partition or the Internet Recovery system are the best options for installing/reinstalling on a RAID set.
Second, if you boot the system using Command+R to access the recovery partition, you can wipe the two drives and create a RAID set, but this process will remove the recovery partition and is incompatible with FileVault encryption (a warning to this effect comes up when you try to start an install/reinstalll on a RAID set, but at that point, you've likely already erased the recovery partition in Disk Utility). If the system boots after the recovery partition is deleted, the only install/reinstall option is Apple's Internet Recovery.
Third, as might be expected depending upon your internet bandwidth, the Internet Recovery system can take a while to boot the recovery tools (10-15 minutes to boot on a standard cable modem connection) and to reinstall the OS (50+ minutes on a standard cable modem connection). Internet Recovery currently reinstalls only Mac OS X Lion and the Server tools on the mini Server; there's no option to install iLife during the OS install (Apple could always change this by updating their servers, and there is a Customize button on the installer, but it is greyed out and cannot be clicked at the present).
Fourth, once the OS is reinstalled, it's possible to reinstall the iLife applications by launching the App Store from within Mac OS and selecting Purchased. The store will indicate that the system is eligible to download the iLife apps and you can do so by agreeing to upload system-identifying information to Apple and signing in with your Apple ID.
I hope all this helps. Here's a more concise step-by-step of how to set up the system with RAID:
THINGS YOU NEED
A fast Internet connection for the mini
Patience
Hold Command+R on the keyboard at start up to boot from the system's recovery partition (if the recovery partition has been deleted, the system should start from Apple's Internet Recovery system; you may need to connect to WiFi if wired ethernet isn't available)
Once you get into the recovery utility, select Disk Utility and for each of the two hard drives:
highlight the drive
select the Partition tab
select 1 Partition from the Partition Layout pulldown menu
select Free Space from the Format pulldown menu
click Apply
After you've wiped both of the drives, highlight one of the disks and click the RAID tab, then create a RAID set (striped or mirrored, as you prefer)
Quit Disk Utility and from the main recovery utility menu select Reinstall Lion (from this point on, if you have any trouble, you can restart the mini from the Internet Recovery system and return to this point, but the recovery partition will be gone as long as you keep the RAID set)
After you install and configure Mac OS X Lion Server (which can take well over an hour to download and install), you should be able to reinstall the iLife applications by launching the App Store App and selecting Purchased, then logging in with your Apple ID and agreeing to send your system info to Apple to download the iLife Applications
If you're using the mini as a production server, I highly suggest setting up some local, external recovery tool, as you don't want to have system downtime protracted by having to wait for an Internet Recovery boot/reinstall. I would also beg Apple to consider this sort of scenario and to provide more supported methods for recovering and reinstalling from local media.
Best of luck to you all.I found the basic principle on another forum thanks to a guy called 'e-whizz' and this what I did to make RAID 1 work on a mac mini server with LION server.
You can easily configure the second drive on a mac mini server for a Mirrored RAID 1 set with Lion Server without either reinstalling or erasing your existing setup.
The initial setup process takes about 30 minutes, though the rebuilding of the mirror disk will take several hours, depending on the amount of data you have on the drive. It took around 3 hours on a new mac mini server with lion server installed, nothing else configured.
Before you start, please ensure you have a current backup of the server. Getting the following commands wrong can render you server unusable.
What you need to use is the command line version of Disk Utility, diskutil.
Before you start, clone the hard drive. You can use SuperDuper (or similar, I have used SuperDuper) with copying all files onto a USB memory stick. If Lion is freshly installed, 8Gb will do. SuperDuper will create a bootable copy on the USB.
Boot the mac mini from the external USB. To do that, reboot and hold down the option key while restarting. You will see a window, select the USB drive to boot from.
Launch the terminal and type the following command:
diskutil list
This gives you a list of all the drives and partitions your system knows about.
You need to find the Server HD partition (the first disk) and the HD2 partitions (the second disk). These are the two main ~500GB drives. You will be using the disk IDENTIFIERs when issuing the diskutil commands. For a stock standard Mac Mini Server, the commands below are correct, but if you have previously changed the volume names, or repartitioned at any stage the disk identifiers and volume names may differ.
First enable RAID mirroring on existing Server HD volume. This will create a single disk, unpaired mirror, without affecting your data.
Using this syntax:
diskutil appleRAID enable mirror disktomirror
where disktomirror is your disk identifier for Server HD
On my mac mini server, Server HD was disk0s2, so I used this command:
diskutil appleRAID enable mirror disk0s2
You now need to run diskutil list again to see the disk identifier for the new RAID volume. The new RAID volume will be listed as disk# on its own at the bottom of the list.
On my mac mini server this was disk3 (disk 2 was the USB I booted from, disk 0 the first disk and disk 1 the second disk)
Next add the disk HD2 to the Server HD raid mirror volume (on my mac, as I said before, this is disk3) as a new member.
This step will erase disk HD2 and begin an auto repair of the Server HD.
Using this syntax:
diskutil appleRAID add member newdisk raidvolume
replacing newdisk and raidvolume with your particular disk identifiers
On my server this was:
diskutil appleRAID add member disk1s2 disk3
To follow the progress of rebuilding the mirror set, type
diskutil list
It will show you the progress in % of the rebuilding under status
Once finished, reboot and your RAID 1 is up and running and you have also a working backup on your USB (coz' that's where you booted from ;-)
After reboot you can check the status of your RAID with
diskutil appleRAID list
Both drives should show ONLINE under status, interestingly, the device node for the RAID changed on my mac mini server from disk3 to disk2
That's it -
What for: OSX 10.1.2 Software restore disks
Trying to catalogue and sort my Mac software disks. Came across SX 10.1.2 Software restore disks [6 of them] and I can't recall what they do or are for? When would a person need them?
I have old Macs in my home that I keep around for sentimental reasons. The oldest being an SE30! So I keep old software too for the iMac Bondi, lamp shade iMac, etc.Ethel, welcome,....

I have an older MacBook, but the operating system and all the software is up-to-date. For some reason, out of the blue (didn't add any plugins, extensions, or download any new apps), safari started to crash every time that I tried to open it. In hunting around, I noticed that iTunes, iPhoto, Aim, software updates, and more crash in the same exact way. Firefox, Chrome, Quicktime, and microsoft office work fine. I went in and deleted all the plists and emptied the cache, but the problem persists. I also did a disk repair and reset the PRAM. I am able to use all of the above programs in a different user account though, so it has to be something with this specific user account and it's preferences. I just cannot figure it out. Any help would be fantastic. Here is the error message from safari:

Lost OD Users and Disk Util Crashing
Community,
My Lion Server is having some trouble! It seems that LDAP is not running, and while I've tried a few terminal commands to reboot the service, nothing seems to have worked.
Also, the user profiles on the server have just vanished. I believe this would be a result of the local OD not running? Afterall, if its considered 'offline', I'd expect the Server Admin and Workgroup Manager to not display the users.
One other problem - An external disk was becoming pretty unresponsive from my Lion Server, so I moved it and plugged it into another computer, where it seemed to run just fine. Resetting the PRAM on the Mac Server seemed to alleviate some troubles, but the disk was still acting up.
I erased and reformatted the disk to 1 partition, but now I cannot re-format the partition scheme I'd like to use. Now, my Disk Utility crashes whenever I try to select the 'Partition' tab an a newly reformatted G-RAID 2 TB disk, using Mac, Journaled, Formatting.
Anyone have some pointers on how to continue troubleshooting these two issues?
Thanks,
Cyeah, now we have the answer to your question, I didnt have time to include this tactic in my previous post:
a. load Tiger DVD client disk into Mac mini hosting Tiger Server 10.4.5
b. launch Disk Utility
c. click Verify Perms
d. DU finds various problems, finishes stating it repaired them
e. click Verify Perms again
f. DU finds various problems, finishes stating it repaired them
g. click Verify Perms again
h. DU find no problems, finishes stating it repaired them
So, restart this Tiger Server with its own hard drive, then run DU from that hard drive: same error message once again
Perhaps this is a benign error ? -
Security Update - Disk Utlity crashes, disk partitions won't mount
After I installed the original security update (2006-002) released the week of 3/13/06 I encountered the following problems:
- Firewire startup disk did not show firewire icon.
- Firewire startup disk did not mount with all partitions. Only the system partition mounts.
- Cannot mount any drives or disk images.
- Disk Utility crashes every time.
- Spotlight returns results for a search but when choosing Show All nothing happens.
I really need to mount the second partition of my firewire startup disk as all my data is on it.
If I boot from my Mac mini's internal drive everything works fine. I should note that the internal drive of my mini has 10.4.2 installed. My firewire startup drive has 10.4.5 with the security update.
I installed security update 2006-002 using Software update and things went wrong.
I tried re-applying the 10.4.5 combo update to no avail. I installed the latest security update (2006-002 v 1.1) to no avail. I repaired disk permissions from the install DVD to no avail.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

1.25G4 Mac mini| 512MB RAM | 80GB HDD | Superdrive | 512 Mb Shufle Mac OS X (10.4.5) security update 2006-002I really need to mount the second partition of my firewire startup disk as all my data is on it.
To me that sounds like your data is not backed up there. Never install anything without first backing up. You may still be able to salvage information there using Prosoft Data Rescue:
http://www.prosofteng.com/
and another external hard disk.
As for the data on the other drive where you are having crashes, are you running any third party utilities like Norton Personal Firewall or others which may be impacted by a security update? -
Hi guys does the below mean anything to anyone.
I had a CD in the dvd drive (a game play disk) and when i pressed the eject key on the keyboard the CD did not eject, so i open Disk Utility to eject the CD that way and Disk Utility locked up.
So tried to restart and shut down via the apple menu. No Joy.
The only thing i can think off is i had a disk image mounted that was on my NAS (It was a game dvd of 1.2GB, the program was installed, the image of the install DVD was mounted to save time while playing the game) and that is what caused the conflict between to mounted images? One in the dvd drive and one on the NAS, but they were different games so i don't get it.
That said the play disk on the NAS was Mounted with Toasts 'Mount It' option - right click - More - 'Mount It' as if i used 'DiskImageMounter' (default) the game would ask for the install CD.
I have ran the AHT and ASD - all OK, and ran remember via single user - all OK
I just want to understand what happened.
The best bit is while the mac was locking up bit by bit, as System Preferences then decided to lock up, i tried Toast 7, to eject the CD, it locked up. Spotlight was OK so ran terminal and as Safari was OK browsed the web and tried various command line shut downs and using activity monitor force quite apps. I managed to shut down to the logging off blue screen with spinning wheel before my G5 decided to do no more and i had to do a forced shut down.
I was able to open the Dashboard widgets but the Drive Health.wdgt didn't work and still doesn't?
If i put the game play disk in the G5 and open Disk Utility it locks up again, i had to do another forced shut down.
After restarting i put the game disk in and opened Disk Utility again and all was OK. Tried 3 more ejects and re-inserting, all OK.
I checked my 2 drives SMART info, for piece of mind, via Drive Health.wdgt but it would not display any info, it wouldn't update.
So i have just booted of my firewire HD and the Drive Health.wdgt works fine and the only difference between my firewire HD and my local HD is that i have run applejacks since i re-imaged, and further examinations reveal that the error relating to the Drive Health.wdgt is a permissions error so i am even more baffled than when i started.
console log at time of the first Disk Utility crash.

I have an apple iMac G5 running Mac OS 10.4.11 can i upgrade it to 10.5?
If so will i also loose all the software currently installed on my Mac? eg. Adobe software.
I have moved countries (opposite side of world) so i do not have my install disks, or the disks that came with my Mac.
Where can i get the 10.5 upgrade from?
Do i need my original disks that came with my Mac?
- Thanks if anyone can help
Note:
I have never had any problems with my G5, it's been my awesome helper these past 7 years, I can't say the same thing for my new Mac, but it seems now my poor G5 is slowly being made redundent because they no longer write software for it.
I don't see why i should pay for a new Mac because my old one does not always function on the web, or having a new printer because it does not support the new software.
My New Mac Laptop has had no end of troubles since i bought it less than a year ago.
What happened to Mac being a sign of Quality??First off, all upgrades can potentially break a system. First and foremost, backup your data before installing anything. Next read this tip as 10.5 loses Classic compatibility, and has these other issues outlined on the tip: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2275

Apple TV mirroring issues even with Mac mini, airport extreme bought at the end of last year, and an iPad 2
I have the same issue with ATV3 and iPhone 4S. Everything works properly, no buffering issues when watching netflix, vimeo, youtube BUT when I try mirroring even a small 15sec iPhone movie it stutters and buffers and results to a choppy playback..same with larger mp4 files such as 1-1.5GB, buffers forever and never plays, I just re-encoded the same movie to 700MB and plays perfectly..
Why Apple, why?..so close..I can accept the bigger movie files issue, but not being able to playback properly an iPhone movie is funny..I recorded a movie with lower bitrate through Filmic Pro (Economy mode, up to 16Mbps)
and plays properly.
Is there an upcoming software update going to solve the problem or is it hardware related and therefore not fixable.
Please don't reply with a network related answer, by 2012 we know how to set up our networks and everything else runs flawlessly.
I'll apreciate a fast answer, we love Apple, but if it can't play an iphone movie (or a high quality movie from iTunes) it's just not up to my standards.
Thanks again.

Blank category screens in the iTunes App store.
If I select ANY category the screens are blank. Is Apple aware of this issue and if so - when will it be fixed? I need to research travel apps before my trip next week to Hungary. I am running Windows 7 - 64 bit. iTunes 11.
