Software or hardware problem on MacBook Pro?

I was listening to an audio podcast on iTunes (on my 2011 MBP) when sound began to stutter. I observed that when sound stopped, so did iTunes timer, so it was my computer and not the podcast. This kept getting worse, unitil the screen froze and I had to turn computer off manually (I was on AC power, not battery). When I turned it back on, I got a gray screen, then flashing question mark on gray screen. I used option-d on startup to do internet hardware test which said "no trouble found." However, I still only get gray screen or flashing question mark, so the next step would be to boot from DVD. I am reluctant to do that, because I am convinced there must be a problem with my hard drive for this to have occured the way it did. It is an hour and a half drive to the nearest Apple store. Any suggestions before I go there?

Glad to hear you have your data backed up.
The issue could have been developing over time from a bad ground in the wall outlet or if the computer got one too many zaps of static electricity or a good solid thump from dropping onto a table or going into a bag or case.  Digital information (which includes the formatting of the drive itself) is delicate despite efforts to make devices more durable.  You may have just witnessed the end of a long chain of events which resulted in this behavior.
Or it could be a failed drive.
You should attempt to erase as if the erase fails that is conclusive evidence that there is something hardware related going on as all the symptoms you've described thus far could have a software root cause.
When you take the computer into an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) they will diagnose the issue to determine what hardware components are having an issue (assuming its hardware).  If you are in the US you can also call AppleCare, and as your computer is under warranty they can send you a box and the computer can be sent in for repair if you don't want to drive somewhere and leave it: https://expresslane.apple.com
If the hard drive is actually failed and needs to be replaced, the failed drive goes back to Apple.  If you want to see the drive physically destroyed you would have to pay for the replacement drive they would be putting in your computer as they would be giving you an extra drive (The brand new one which is replacing the bad one and the bad one itself). Physically damaging the drive would not be ok as that violates the drive warranty which means Apple wouldn't be able to go back to the drive maker (Hitachi from what you reported) and say "Hey this drive you sold us failed. Reimburse us for it under it's warranty."
If you have concerns about the data on the failed drive you could take a big magnet with you to the AASP and ask them to put the drive on the magnet when they take it out to replace it (I keep a rare earth magnet around for just this purpose).

  • How i can submit a complain about hardware problem in Macbook Pro early 2011?

    Hello every one,
I bought my Macbook on September 2011, and it worked fine with me for about 1.5 years, but suddenly i got freezed screen when it was on the discrete graphic card, then the same problem happened with the integrated one. and now a gray screen come after the startup apple logo, and the computer is not working. When i searched about this problem on the internet i found that many people faced the same problem and the solution is changing the main board, which will cost a lot of money. And when i contacted the custmer service, they reject to agree that this is a manufacturing problem and they insist that i should pay to get the problem solved because the warranty is just one year. So i want to know how can i contact Apple to complain about this issue, because they should extend the warranty about this problem because it happened for many computers from this generation.
    thank you in advance.

I went to Apple store and they confirmed the problem as a problem in the main board or the main board and the screen. and here are some links for similar problem with the same model:

Slow performance after installing Yosemite on an older Mac is often caused by inadequate memory. Although you can install the upgrade on a Mac with 2 GB of memory, experience has shown that at least 4 GB is needed for full performance.
Select About This Mac from the Apple menu. If you have less than 4 GB of memory, and your model has upgradable memory, install as much as it can take, or at least that much. Any reputable RAM vendor will have a web form in which you can select the Mac model and be directed to compatible parts.
Memory in the MacBook Air is not upgradable. If that's what you have, you should restore the previous system from a backup, or replace the machine. Ask if you need guidance.
The Etrecheck report clearly shows that SylvieRose has a Macbook Pro, not a Macbook Air and that there are only 2 GB  RAM installed.  The Etrecheck report can be very informative if one takes the time to examine it.
    Ciao.

  • Erratic iSight problem on MacBook Pro

The iSight camera on my MacBook Pro 17" comes and goes constantly. It vanishes from System Profiler at times too. I've rest the NVRAM and logged in as other users too. Its like it has a mind of its own. Turning on the green LED and off, then refusing to let other programs like iChat or Photo Booth from connecting, sometimes saying the camera is in use even. Its very fustrating also since I use the camera sometimes in iChat or Skype only to have the image lockup. The camera vanishes. I'm not sure if its a hardware problem or a kernel problem.
I've decided to try to monitor its failure with the HardwareGrowler.app. The camera randomly connects and disconnects. Growl notification show:

    Hello Aaton
If you have not installed any new hardware since your MacBook Pro worked correctly, it is possible that your problem may be hardware related.  Because of the intermittent nature of your problem, unless the problem is repeatable when running some particular software or performing some function that could indicate possible software or device conflicts, hardware problems in your Mac seems even more likely.
Unless you get better suggestions from iNtel Mac users, here are the common solutions that help most avoid a visit to their Apple Service Technician for the "in use..." or "no camera connected" errors. You have already tried some of them, but I leave the entire list for possible use by other readers.
None of the suggestions is complicated, but the only way to find which one will work for you is to try them one-by-one until you find the one that fixes your Mac.
    (0) Disconnect any unnecessary peripherals while you do your testing to rule out possible conflicts.
    (1) Restart your Mac. Sometimes that is all that is required.
    (2) If you use VMware Fusion to run Windows on your Mac, consider disconnecting iSight from your Virtual Machine as recommended by user "The.VCI" in this post.
    (3) If you use an HP printer/scanner with your Mac, consider the "daemon" suggestions from user "parkersal" in this post.
    (4) Check for any running applications, Login Items, or widgets that can use your iSight. (It is easy to forget widgets like Mirror in your Dashboard.) As explained in Apple's iSight "Your camera is in use by another application" message, iSight can be used by one application at a time.
    (5) Try every suggestion re: Built-in iSight in How to Troubleshoot iSight. Be sure to include the checks for whether the problem is "application-specific" and "user-specific".
Click here if you need help creating a new user account to check whether your problem is "user-specific" during Troubleshooting.
    (6) If resetting or the other troubleshooting suggestions do correct your problem, try the following:
    • Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
    • Repair permissions. (Click here if you need help.)
    • Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update v1.1 (iNtel).
    • Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight again.
Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.
    (7) Some iNtel Mac laptop users have also reported success after unplugging their Macs and leaving the battery out for half-an-hour to overnight.
    (8) If none of these suggestions work, contact your retailer, Apple, or your Apple-Authorized Service Provider for professional help.
    EZ Jim

  • Weird problem with Macbook Pro 15" and Asus PB278 monitor

    Hi there
I recently bought a brand new MacBook pro 15" the one with a dedicated nvidia 750 vid card. However I'm facing weird problems while connecting it to a external monitor Asus PB278 (1440p monitor). I use a mini display port to display port cable.
My problem is: Sometimes it works perfectly, but then if I put the laptop to sleep, sometimes it won't recognise the screen at wake up, at first I tried to restart the system, power on and off the monitor, connecting and reconnecting the cable... nothing worked. I even bought a expensier cable thinking it was probably a low quality cable. I found that then only way to fix this is to connect the monitor with a mini display to HDMI cable I have (won't support over 1080p), and then put the mini display to display port cable again... it is freaking bizarre.
This is very frustrating, I live outside the US and while the retailer will honor the guarantee I'm not sure if this is a Software or Hardware problem, It will take them about 3 weeks to replace my system which is unfortunate due to I have plenty of work to do. I don't want to send it on guarantee just to find out hey... display recognition is broken again. My questions are:
Is there a way to know if this is a hardware or software problem?
I've heard Yosemite is having some issues regarding external displays, is this one of those?
Have you found yourself experiencing this problem? Could you fix it?
Sorry if my english is a bit weird, thanks in advance.

    Hi Gatobolo,
Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It appears that you've discovered unusual behavior with your MacBook Pro and an external display, where you need to temporarily connect a different display adapter before you can use your Asus PB278 again.
I can offer some additional tips to help resolve or further isolate the issue you're seeing.
First, try the following resets to see if they eliminate the behavior:
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
Next, if the issue occurs again, try restarting your Mac into Safe Mode:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
You can find the steps above in this article:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays - Apple Support
If your display is recognized in Safe Mode, or after restarting again, the issue may be due to a software conflict.
Another suggestion mentioned in the article above is to try a different type of display adapter, such as a Mini DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI adapter.
If the issue persists, you can also back up your data, erase your hard drive, and reinstall a fresh copy of OS X Yosemite.
OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X
If the issue still occurs after a clean install, troubleshooting the hardware may be necessary.
    Best Regards,
    Jeremy

However, I still don't get a view of anything on the desktop except for the standard Apple swirl.
Can you drag windows to the other display?
In the "Arrangement" tab of "Displays" system preference, you can drag the display pictures to match the actual arrangement, drag the menu bar to the other display, or enable mirroring.

  • What is the problem on MacBook Pro retina 15"?

I just bought a new MacBook Pro retina 15". After unboxing, I turned it on and there was no any problem. But the second time I turned it on and charge battery, I got 2 problems, 1. The machine made noise loudly and 2. The charging is not working. What is the problem on MacBook Pro retina 15"? However, after about 1 hour, it works normally. Should I still use it or sell it before it has more issues?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
This, Adobe Flash Player 12.0.0.70, is the current version of Flash. It should work with Snow Leopard or later.

Cs5 Brush cursor problem, on MacBook pro, tried the latest update, and the genious dude had no idea of what to do! Apple any fix?

Additional Info - after working on this problem for 4 hours, I shut my laptop in frustration and took a break.  1 hour later I opened my mac and the cursor had magically returned.  No restart, no power on/off - nothing.  Frustration.  If anyone else has had this happen and has actually fixed the problem let me know. I'm sure it will reoccur.
