Software restore without discs

I've got an iBook with combo drive - just bought another one off eBay that doesn't have combo drive and didn't come with any discs. I re-installed OSX with my old discs, but the new computer without the combo drive doesn't like the Restore Software discs!
Is it possible to restore the software by downloading something? Or do I have to find the right restore software discs for this particular iBook?

Laura, as you can see from this thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1273637&#1273637
some of us have the same problem even though we have our original software restore discs. Here's the solution i posted:
Had the exact same problem, but found some instructions at
http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-7355.html
that helped:
"You can get to all of the 'images' on a restore CD by mounting the CD, opening its main window, using the Finder's menu "Go to Folder..." and typing .images
You can then mount any of the .dmg files to see their contents. Note: Some of the dmg files contain installers but most just contain the application as it would appear if it were installed and any library components, etc."
What i did was to mount the OS9 General.dmg, then copy the "General OS 9 Content" folder to my hard drive. Open Classic System Preference pane, and tell it to use the System folder found within. I don't know if any of the other stuff in that folder is crucial, but i left it all there in case. Classic now starts up fine for me. HTH.

  • Software restore without disc?

I want to restore the original software, to give my laptop to my daughter, but I don't have the original discs. What are your suggestions?

Call AppleCare and order DVDs. They are part of the Mac.
They will charge you a nominal fee for shipping and handling.

  • Can OS 10.2.1 software restore & install discs for iBook be used by others?

My wife's iBook died late last year and I eBayed all the components, including the software restore and install CDs (I made a net of about $200 from everything, after eBay fees, Paypal fees and shipping! But it was A LOT of work!).
The person who bought the software restore and install CDs wrote me today and said:I just find out after many tries to install this system that i got from you, that the reason it won't install is because this set of disk are propeitery, Meaning that after they were installed in your wiife's computer and registered with the apple corp. NO ONE ELSE CAN USED THEM. Meaning it belonged to that computer ONLY. Therefore I'm Requesting my money back. Let me know. --Al.
    My questions are:
    1) Is it true that the install CDs and restore CDs can only be used on the original computer?
    2) If not true, what are the limits of which computers they will work on (i.e. only all iBooks? only the exact iBook that my wife had? Which Macs will they work for?).
Here is the link to the eBay auction, if that helps:

P.S. This question is cross-posted on the 10.3 and earlier forum.

As always, Ronda, you are the best with your information! I have e-mailed the buyer to get his/her system's specs to see if I can help solve his/her problem.
Apple's software license agreement does permit a one-time sale as follows (assuming I have the right info for this situation):You may, however, make a one-time permanent transfer of all of your license rights to the Apple Software to another party, provided that: (a) the transfer must include all of the Apple Software, including all its component parts, original media, printed materials and this License; (b) you do not retain any copies of the Apple Software, full or partial, including copies stored on a computer or other storage device; and (c) the party receiving the Apple Software reads and agrees to accept the terms and conditions of this License. NFR (Not for Resale) Copies: Notwithstanding other sections of this License, Apple Software labeled or otherwise provided to you on a promotional basis may only be used for demonstration, testing and evaluation purposes and may not be resold or transferred.
BTW: I recently went through a long effort to upgrade to Windows XP Home Edition on a computer at my church, using a valid Product Key from a Gateway computer that was being destroyed, literally. After long hours on the phone with both Microsoft and Gateway, I finally determined that their license (EULA) expires when the specific machine expires. It seems that Apple's license is more reasonable by allowing a transfer!

  • Wipe and factory restore without discs

Hi can i do wipe and factory restore my MBA without the discs , i have them some where but no idea where

We did the same with my wife's MacBook Air before giving it to our daughter, but it is not necessary to erase the drive. Create an account for your wife, give her Administrator privileges, then log into her account and delete your account. Everything you did on the MacBook Air will be gone.
Presumably, your MacBook Air is working well and your intent to 'wipe' it is not therapeutic, i.e., a clean install of the system software to remedy a software problem. If that is what you intend, then you will need to find your discs.

  • Satellite L775D-S7340 factory restore without disc?

Is there any way to factory restore this computer without the CD disc? It has been acting odd ever since we've owned it and windows updates every daya for hours. I see that most people are downgrading these computers to windows 7. This one has 7 installed and it seems to be factory. Has a windows 7 product key on the bottom. This computer is my cousin's and he needs it for school. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

See that computer's User's Guide starting on page 62 for full instructions and your options.  Your cousin was instructed to make recovery disks himself when he first started the machine but apparently he did not.

  • ILife 06 and my software restore intel discs

so, I want to use the software that came with my new intel iMac to erase and restore my old flat panel G4. My question is, do those discs include iLife 06?
    mytreeofthorns

To expand upon what Niel wrote, the disks that came with your Intel iMac contain the Intel specific build of OS X. While there are thousands of apps that are univeral - that is, the contain both x86 and PPC code - the OS itself is not universal. There are two builds - one for PPC and one for x86 (Intel) and one will not work on the other.
To answer your question, yes it contains iLife, but that copy if for your Intel iMac and no other machine. Do the right thing and buy a copy of iLife '06 to support your favorite computer company.

  • Sell iMac - need to restore without disc

I bought my iMac used and it did not come with a restore disc. Now I want to sell it, but I want to permanently remove all of my personal stuff, i.e photos, documents, etc. How do I permanently erase all of these items?

    halo,
So if I hook it up to my eMac and go through the security options that would take care of it more permanently than just moving stuff to the trash?
    Well read through this:
    http://www.apple.com/au/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/
    The pertinent info is:
"The 7-Pass Erase option conforms to the DoD 5220.22-M specification. This specification calls for three passes, but Disk Utility performs seven."
So that's 2.333 times what the Department of Defense considers standard security erasure.
Altho' now I see that they no longer consider that secure:
"As of the June 2007 edition of the DSS C&SM, overwriting is no longer acceptable for sanitization of magnetic media; only degaussing or physical destruction is acceptable."
However it should be ok for your stuff as long as there's no nuclear secrets on there.
And is it pretty easy to do it that way?
Well I did a small 20 GB hard drive and it took at least 5 hours for the 7 pass.

What exactly are you seeing on the phone's screen ? If the iTunes icon and cable then the phone is in recovery mode, in which case it's too late to take a new backup or to copy any content off the phone - you will have to connect the phone to your computer's iTunes and reset it back to factory defaults, after which you can restore to the last backup that you took or just resync your content to it

  • HELP! Software Restore disc not recognized!

    hello,
i just did a clean erase and install of os x tiger on my powerbook g4 12" dvi with the tiger retail install dvd. i updated everything with the combo updater and then kept updating until there was nothing left.
then i put in my original software restore disc that came with the computer and i loaded the package from the dvd. when i run the software restore program, it asks me to insert the disc with the following pictogram: (the same pictogram that is on the dvd). i tried to eject the disc and re-insert it, but it still won't recognize it.
the computer is out of warranty now. do you think if i went to the apple store, they would give me the programs that came with my computer, or will they just try to sell me ilife?
i wouldn't mind about the latter (although i just bought a macbook pro, so i don't need ilife), but i formatted the hard drive and reinstalled tiger fresh because i am giving the computer to a friend, and i don't think he wants to pay for anything (even though he is getting the computer for free, greedy sob).
    thanks for reading,
    hamdog

    hamdogger:
i see now that i probably should have restored the computer to the factory defaults with the original restore disk and then used my full retail tiger upgrade to instal tiger.
I think that is the best way to go about it. As I understand it, you want to install some of the apps that came bundled with the original install disks, and are not on the Retail Version. Using Pacifist to do that may be a bit tedious. Here is what I suggest:
    • Completely reformat and erase HDD.
    • Install and update original OS, including bundled software.
    • Install Tiger using the Update Option. This will leave everything intact and install Tiger over it.
Formatting, Partitioning Erasing a Hard Disk Drive
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
    Select language
    • Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
    • Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
    • Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
    • Click on Options button
    • Select Apple Partition Map (PPC Macs) or GUID Partition Table (Intel Macs)
    • Click OK
    • Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note 1: One partition is normally preferable for an internal HDD.)
    • Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
    • Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    • Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    • Select Erase tab
    • Select the sub-volume (indented) under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
    • Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
    • Click Erase button
    • Quit Disk Utility.
    Install Panther OS X 10.3.9
    • Boot from the 10.3.x install CD 1
    • Go to Installer Menu and open Disk Utility
    • (Optional)Go to File menu and Repair OS 9 Permissions!
    • Quit Disk Utility.
    • Launch Installer
    • Select Destination disk for installation
    • Click Options
    • Select Installation Option Archive and Install
    • (Optional) Preserve Users and Network Settings
    • Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
    • Check box to install BSD Subsystems (Panther & earlier).
    • Install Mac OS X 10.3.x
    • Restart and Repair permissions (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility)!
    • Download and apply the 10.3.9 Combo Update
    • Restart and Repair Disk Permissions as previously!
    • Run Software Update and apply all updates available
    • Repair Disk Permissions (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility)!
    Installation Process (Tiger)
    • Open Installer and begin installation.
    • Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Optional: Check box to install X11 (Tiger).
    • Proceed with installation.
    • After installation computer will restart for setup.
    • After setup, reboot computer.
    • Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
    • Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
    • Select First Aid in main panel.
    • Click Repair Disk Permissions.
    • Connect to Internet.
    • Download and install Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo update (PPC) (Tiger)
    Computer will restart.
    • Repair Disk Permissions as previously.
    • Go to Apple Menu > Software Update.
    • Install all updates.
    Computer may restart after updates.
    • Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
    • Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
    • Select First Aid in main panel.
    • Click Repair Disk Permissions.
You can setup the computer with your friend's name, or else set up a dummer admin account. You friend can then set up a new admin account and delete the dummy account.
Please do post back with further comments or questions.

  • RE: Can't install OS 9 from Software Restore discs

    I noticed this post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=260277
I was having the same issue, but managed to figure it out. That post has been archived, so thought I would note my method in a new post.
OK, so you've installed OS X 10.4 Tiger on a PowerPC Mac (e.g. G4), but don't have Classic on there.
First, install Cocoatech's Path Finder (version 4.8.5 for Tiger):
    http://get.cocoatech.com/PathFinder485.dmg
In Path Finder, go to the View menu, and ensure that "Show Invisible Files" and "Show Package Contents" are both selected.
Insert the Software Restore CD 1. In Path Finder, navigate to the Restore CD. Within ".images" you will find OS9General.dmg. Double click it to open the DMG.
Navigate to this opened DMG, "General OS 9 Content" within Path Finder. Select everything with command-A, copy with command-C, navigate to the root directory of your hard drive in Path Finder, then hit command-V to paste. I already had "Desktop DB" and "Desktop DF", so I didn't overwrite those.
After that's done, eject the DMG, the CD, and close Path Finder.
Go to System Preferences. You'll notice there's no Classic panel. Open the "Startup Disk" panel. Mac OS 9.2.2 should now be an option. Select it, and click Restart.
Wait for OS 9 to load up in all its glory. When that's done, go to the Startup Disk control panel, select Mac OS X 10.4, and click to restart.
Now back in OS X land, go into System Preferences. There should now be a "Classic" panel.

What model Mac do you have?
Do you want to be able to boot OS 9.2.2 or just run in classic mode?
Are the OS 9 drivers installed on the hard drive?
     Cheers, Tom

Yes our recovery disks will return your unit to the factory state. All the software that came with the unit will be reinstalled. Whatever you added you will have to reinstall.

  • I want to reload original software in IMAC G4 - i have original disks, can i install OSX first and then load "software restore 1 to 6" and not load OS9

I just purchased a used IMAC G4, cpu G4(1.1), powermac 4,2, 800MHz 15 inch FP and 55 Gig hard drive.  I now have 750 k memory and it is working fine.  i want to reload the original software.  i have all original disks -CDs. These include OSX Install; OS9 Install; Software Restore 1 to 6 CDs; Imac applications.
Question, please, is which CD do i load first?  Also i hope it is not necessary to load OS9.  I would think OSX install first and then the software restore disks and then the imac applications?
    Thanks.
    Robert.

Boot from the disc labeled Disc One. Follow instructions and when you get to the part to select a Destination/Target drive click once on the drive then click on the Options button. Select the option for Erase and Install then click on the OK button and proceed.
You do not have to install OS 9. If you don't then you simply cannot use the OS X Classic emulator.
I believe there is a separate installer on Disc One for restoring pre-bundled software.
