Software sounds

I was watching a garageband seminar sent to me along with other topics. The guy in the vid had a 48 or 49 key , usb keyboard, the software sounded really quite good. When i access the software using my computer keyboard they sound ok, but not like the video. I am playing them through m-audio av - 40's the same one's i listened to the seminar with. Will i notice a difference if i buy a usb keyboard??

software instruments are all inside your computer, how you trigger them makes no difference.

  • Recording external software sounds?

I'm using a Novation Impulse keyboard to play Garageband's own software sounds, which is fine but I just purchased Mainstage because of its extra (Logic Pro) better quality sounds and would like to record some tracks within Garageband using these. If I open a Magic Garageband project and select keyboard from the illustrated instruments, a new track opens up and I can indeed record the Mainstage sounds - it hears and records these perfectly but if I open a normal a standard Project, none of the options available allows me to record the keyboard Mainstage sounds - only Garageband's own sounds.
If it can hear and recognise Mainstage sounds in the simple Magic project setup, why not the normal project ones? Is there a way to record these sounds within a normal project - what do I need to select to enable this?

I was wondering what i need to do in Logic to enable the keyboard to use the drum sounds from the drum machine.
If understand correctly right now you have connected the Midi keyboard Midi Out to the drum machine Midi In so you can trigger the Drum machine sounds - right ?
I guess you want to make some kind of special midi routing ( i.e Environment ) so you can record the triggering midi notes of the Keyboard Controller on a Logic track and in the same time to trigger the Drum Machine so you can edit the Midi notes any time...
I do not own these small babes but just had a look at their web sites. What I see is that the Mrt-3 has Midi IN only (bush 5 pins cable), while the axiom 25 has Midi IN,OUT bushes and USB. Right now I do not have time to read if the axiom 25 USB supports midi both IN/OUT cause it is important to make a routing thru the Logic Environment. My idea is:
    1. Create a new Standard Instrument in the Logic Environment select it and assign its Out port (in the Environment Inspector) to Axiom 25 (if axiom 25 supports that)
    2. Assign a track in the Arrange for the new instrument object you create in step one.
    3. Connect midi (bush) cable from the axiom 25 Midi Out to the Mrt-3 Midi IN.
    4. Create a new midi region on the new Instrument track in the Arrange and draw a few notes just to try if the axiom 25 supports Midi Out thru its USB port.
If it supports you must audition some drum sound from the Drum machine.
Have a look at the axiom 25 manual if there are some special settings for the USB port to make such Midi I/O routings. I'll do that later this evening to try to give you more info...

  • GarageBand (4.1.2) only allows 1 software track using Korg MicroStation Plug-in Editor as software sound generator.

I'm using a Korg Microstation with GarageBand (4.1.2,2008), and installed the included plug-in editor to create software-based tracks per instructions. The first (default, grant piano) track allows me to select the Korg Microstation as the sound generator for the track, enabling access to all the Korg sounds: information is properly transmitted and loaded from the Korg into GB. However, no additional tracks can be created in the GB file; attempts to do so trigger the following 2 messages: 1) Failed to load Audio Unit, please contact the manufacturer for an updated version or further assistance. (-10110), followed by: 2) Failed initializing the plug-in. Please check your instrument library and make sure it contains the right factory presets.   I've tried just duplicating the first track, but this brings up the same messages.  To summarize: I am unable to create more than 1 track in a GB file using the Korg Plug-in editor as the sound generator. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who' encountered this problem!

    Update for GarageBand v6.0.5
I used a Korg Microstation and recorded midi to a track in garageband (made edits, etc) and then output the midi back to the Korg again via the supplied VST.
I then created a real instrument track to record the results from via audio inputs.
The best thing with the Korg Microstation is that you can create Zones on the keyboard to use different instruments.
    This was the result:

This is the only way round it I have found.

  • What's the best all-purpose software sound program?

I'm wondering what the recommendations people have for the best swiss army knife-type software program with all the basic sounds, for quickly sketching out ideas in Logic- Colossus, Sampletank, others? What has the most useful, professional sounds out of the box, best variety, etc.? Mostly doing pop music, so things like the string sounds need to work in that, not as often as orchestra emulations.
    Thanks,
    Tony

Thanks for your comments. Just to clarify - I'm not looking for a sequencing program; I go all the way back to Creator wih Logic/emagic. And Logic's instruments are great. However, I find the included garage band and jam pack samples (of 'real' instruments such as strings, horns, tuned percussion, basses, etc.) to be of uneven quality/usefulness. Sometimes I need to put together tracks with those kinds of sounds very quickly, and I'm interested in augmenting what Logic has. So... any additional recommendations or suggestions?

  • Why does different software sound different¿

Not that I care that much I'm just wondering why?
I did a test, with the same exact .wav file in 3 different applications, I tested: Audition 3.0, Tracktion 2.0.2.14, Ableton Live 6, and they all sounded noticably different with settings on flat, exact same file.
Audition seemed to have the most "accurate" and slightly more high-pitch content, Ableton Live seemed to be slighty less wide but with the mid-range a little more present and Mackie's Tracktion seemed the just a bit more rounded then Audition but also sounded very good.
Audition seemed the most accurate, Tracktion I liked best for that particular file but I'm not sure if it is quite as accurate and wide sounding as Audition, and the kick and snare especially seemed to have slightly less higher-frequency content in Tracktion which could have made it more pleasant sounding to my ears I suppose.
    weird.

oh yeah and I didn't like the sound of Ableton much at all.
the file was originally in a sampler then recorded into Audition, saved and re-opened in each application.

  • Sound modules vs software libraries?

Been thinking about getting som extra struff to my home studio.
Have browsed the internet looking for software sound libraries such as Native instruments etc.
I´ve also looked at sound modules like the yamaha motif rack.
Is it better with a good sound module than getting a large pack of software library?
(booth of them would be optimum if you can afford it)
Any suggestions of some good stuf?

Well, IMHO it depends on what you want.
sound modules (like the yamaha motif or roland fantom) are nice if you want something for live and studio - in studio more for brainstorming ....
sound libraries these days often specialise into a single instrument or a narrow group of instrument and provide many variations and playing styles. To some degree they more for programming than playing - but you can play them was well. I think there is no reason to use them on in a live setup.
Normally with Logic and you Mac you have a basic set of instruments that is not to different from the material of a sound module. So I am not sure if a sound module would add to much for use in your studio/hobbish studio. Libraries can add a lot of you want to take the time to familiarise with them and program those details into your music. (I suppose you already have a good keyboard)
Some other sound modules (like the roland vsynth) are more unique I think and a great addition to a software setup.
    hope that helps
    best

  • To everyone with IOS6 Sound related issues & Others

If you are facing a problem of not having any system sounds, notification sounds, no calls or other software sound related issues I'd suggest you read below it's a stupidly simple fix and it should solve most software issues after an immediate iOS6 update:
After updating unplug the phone from your computer and leave the phone alone for 5-10 minutes, if you still have problems: reboot, wait a few minutes and all sound related problems should be fixed.
When I updated to iOS 6 I had lost my system sounds, so I unplugged from the computer, rebooted the phone and still no go. I decided to just let the system "settle in" for a bit, let it lock and when I unlocked after 5-10 minutes sounds were back and everythings up and running again.

Well, to break it down. After my sounds finally came back (2nd time losing them) last night I decided to restore the phone in itunes. I did it twice. First time I backed up my data. Second time I restored it as a factory iPhone. Both times guess what NO SOUNDS! I also realized that last night I had lost my sounds after charging my phone and unplugging it from the data cord. I still have ringtones (when someone calls), but text messages, emails, and any other alert tones do not work. I cannot turn the volume up or down with the side buttons and also music does not play. It doesn't even have a slide bar at the bottom.
I am on the phone with apple care now. They seem to not be aware of the problem at all.
While I was on the phone with them my sounds ended up coming back, imagine that. Hopefully every time I charge my phone I am not going to have this issue.

  • External sound module

Is it possible to connect an external sound module to iMac/Garageband so as not to use the quicktime software sounds?
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I don't understand that question! GB has midi input, but that doesn't help if you want to record the audio output of the sound module.
How would you do that? I don't know if MidiO is functional in the record mode - then you could just record the sound from the module while it is triggered by the midi out. If not, I'd record it in the background to an audio editor while playing back the GB file and later import that audio.
But as I said, that's theoretical reasoning, since I haven't used MidiO. MyMac should know more.

  • K7N2G and DX sound in audio programs

I wonder if anyone here knows what could cause lack of support of music composing program called Reason for DX NVIDIA nForce Audio. It only accepts MME which sounds too metallic.
I have Windows XP, with all the drivers installed, no conflicts between devices.

will not change a think as far as having only software sound goes, but i understand they are better drivers for your board

  • Eny M4 with Beatsaudio, sound keeps going out.

Sound keeps going out, have to either reboot or stop and start services.
just bought it,   Win7 Professional, all updates,  uninstalled IDT High Def audio software, sound works, but at a low level, not getting the boost it should have with the IDT software.
    Suggestion?
    W5D

    Hello W5D,
    Let's try something simple first.
Right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select 'Playback Devices'.
Left click the default device once to highlight it ( it's usually 'speakers & headphones' ) then click the Properties button.
Click the Enhancements tab and put a tick in the box next to 'Loudness Equalization'.
Click Apply to save the change and then click OK in all remaining windows
Please let me know if this helps.  If not, please reply with your product number and operating system.
    Good luck!

  • Import imovie audio - sounds like donald duck...

    Hello,
I imported an imovie soundtrack that I made recently (from my camcorder). The audio track sounds high pitched, donald duck like. what am I doing wrong ?
Also, I want to process the imovie track to remove some echo that was present in the room during recording. What is the easiest method to reduce/remove this - if possible?

The pitch and tempo issue sounds like a sample rate problem, but I thought iMovie audio was recorded at 48K which would make it play lower and slow in GB. For background on this:

You can play with the Gate effect to cut out software sounds, but that would only be during the silent passages.

  • Some sounds, sound like a robot in World of Warcraft

This has been going on for years, but figured if anyone else gets it. The sound of all your bags opening and closing, sometimes this can sound robot like. Depends on where you are. Other sounds like swimming in the canals I was getting the same issue. But its only with very specific stuff, combat and all that stuff is fine. I use all software sound now too, using DTS direct, but before DTS direct when I used to use the sound cards hardware I would get the same issue. I use to have an older receiver then switched to a new one and the problem didn't change. So its either the game or something in creative drivers. Since all I been using is SB for the last 5+ years.

    Hi,
Are you hearing this only in World of Warcraft?
What about music and movies, are you hearing this too?
Try a different game, that should tell you if it's the game or something else.

  • Fear: Oddly base sound when putting on slow motion. (single play

Hmmm, i get this ugly base sound, when im turning on slow motion, and also when i/it turns off. The game runs great, exept for this.
Is someone else getting this? (I know how it should sound, cause i had good song before the new .07Patch, but this was bad.)
And if someone else gets this, i wanna know if creative got a soloving of this :smileyvery-happy: hehe
And if someone wants to know, i got an..

I finally found a workable but temporary fix. This keeps the distortions away until you restart the game, even if you quickload or start a new level. I'm not sure why or even how it works, but it works. I've been playing FEAR:EP for about 4-5 hours now, distortion free. In fact I just beat the expansion pack (I played about 5 levels) with no problems. It's kinda tricky how to do it, I'll try to explain it as best as I can.
Load a level. Got distortions? Go into the sound options and turn off all the hardware sound options (hardware, EAX, advanced HD). Go back into the game and play around some (endure the distorions, please), until the distortions seem to magically go away (getting into some combat and jumping or using a lot of slow-mo helps). We're not done yet! Now that the distortions seem to have gone away, immediately go back into the options and turn all the hardware sound options back on. Don't quickload, change levels, restart the game or continue the game without turning hardware sounds back on. The distortions WILL return. Now, the distortions should be gone until you restart the game. You may have to try it a few times if the distortions don't go away in software sounds. But if you can make the distortions go away in software, then immediately turn on hardware, they go away altogether for this session.
    Good luck!

  • I want to update my software but im scared

i want to update my software with the latest one, 4.3, but im kinda scared and i dont know if i really want to update it because the last time i did (when i updated it to 4.2) everything in my ipod was gone. Songs, movies, videos, pics, apps. Everything. So im kinda traumatized. So if i download the new one, will it erase everything again?? please help. the new software sounds cool but i dont want to lose all my stuff in my ipod.
    Message was edited by: soapypowers

Just make sure you make a backup of your iPod prior to the update and that all music videos and other stuff is on your computer. That way if you have problems and the iPod ends ups erased you can just restore from backup and sync with the computer to get t all back,
