Software switch between internal speakers and digital out?

I have a brand new Aluminum iMac.
My iMac is connected to my stereo receiver with the built-in S/PDIF Digital Output.
But sometimes I'd like to just use my iMac's internal speakers, so I don't need to power up the receiver.
But when I plug in the digital cable, OS X turns off my speakers, and vice-versa. The Sound Control Panel doesn't give me the option.
I've googled for a while on this -- it looks like Windows leaves the digital output on even if the internal speakers are playing, so this is clearly a software issue.
Is there any way I can use software in Leopard to switch between my internal speakers and my digital output? (Or to use both at once?)

I don't know fore sure, but I believe inserting a plug into
the audio output jack electrically disconnects the speakers.
Yep, totally brain-dead -- but so is the entire analog/digital
"combo jack" nonsense. It leaves you with no way to monitor
any digital audio signal being sent to an external device.
Not with headphones OR speakers!
IMO, the only workable solution is a USB or Firewire
audio interface. If you only need digital audio output,
the cheapest stuff available ($25-ish) should be fine.
If you also want good 24-bit A2D/D2A converters, mic
preamps, etc. expect to pay $150 and up.

  • MacBook Pro won't automatically switch between internal speakers and display audio

I have a MacBook Pro that connects to a LED Cinema display.  It used to automatically switch between internal speakers and display audio when plugged in to the display but won't anymore.  I have to manually change it in System Preferences --> Sound. Does anyone know how to make it do that again?
    thanks,
    Ben

I just want to add, I have the same problem, and just want to help raise awareness of it.
1st, the problem only started recently (have been using the Thunderbolt display since it was released), I did not have this problem, and noticed it beginning only in the last month. (since January)
2nd, My particular setup, includes a hard drive attached to the firewire port on the back of the Thunderbolt Display (so, I am wondering if anyone else experienced this problem with a firewire drive being connected).
         My full setup:
              Macbook Air (2011)
             Thunderbolt display
Western Digital drive (attached to firewire of display)
3rd, If I go into settings, what I will see is the "Display Audio" is selected (but no sound coming out),
If I then select "Internal Speakers," a buffered "history" of all the sounds I did not hear is then played (pretty funny actually) - for  example, if I sent mail, adjusted the volume, and started playing a song.... it immediately plays all those sounds when selecting "Internal Speakers"
4th, If i then select "Display Audio" - it does nothing
5th, what I have to do, to resolve this is:  eject all my hard drives,  disconnect the thunderbolt cable, then reconnect the thunderbolt cable, and everything works as normal.

  • Sound Preferences: switches from Internal Speakers to Digital Out

I've been having this problem recently. I sent the computer off to Apple a few weeks ago and it helped for a while, but no longer.
My computer has a problem with it's sound output jack or something. Without inserting anything into the plug, the Sound will change for "Internal Speakers" to "Digital Out" and to "Built-in Output" in the Sound Preferences Panel.
    Any suggestions?

I have a 4 month old macbook and experiencing the same problem. Just realized it after installing itunes 8 and since then having a stuttering audio playback problem too. When i plug my headphones into the audiojack the sound switches from headphones to speakers and back as well as itunes playing tracks in a stop and go mode. I repaired the rights several times, installed quicktime 7.5.5 again, reinstalled itunes 8 and for sure running the latest leopard version 10.5.5.
Also thought it could be a hardware problem but after reading this it seems more software related.
    Any idea?

  • Internal Speakers and Digital Output

    Hi,
I plugged in my iPod Nano yesterday to update it, and ever since, can't assign my inbuilt speakers as the audio output. The only option is "DIGITAL OUT", which has no output controls. I've repaired permissions, plugged the iPod in and out, and restarted numerous times.
Anyone had a similar problem and fixed it? Can't think what it would be.
    Dave.

sounds like there could a possable hardware fault with the machien speak to apple care or a local service provider to see if they can tell you what the problem is and how to fix it.
( Just a side not you are usually better going to an apple autorised repair agent rather than apple care as most service provders can have it back in a week tops includign ordering parts.)

  • Internal speakers and line out at the same time?

I'd like to connect my Touchsmart 300-1125 to my stereo amplifier, to sometimes be able to play sound through the amp. The problem is that the internal speakers go silent whenever there is a cable in the line out jack (3.5 mm), so for times when I don't need the amp I have to fiddle with the cable to enable the internal speakers again.
Can I configure the audio driver so it doesn't disable the internal speakers when there is a cable in the jack?
(note that my model doesn't have the audio "phono" plugs on the rear, just a 3.5 mm headphone jack on the side and a 3.5 mm line out jack on the rear)
    Thanks
    Mike

    Thanks Vidya,
I was hoping for a solution in the direction of your second link, ie a driver upgrade that would offer more control over the audio chip settings. It seems though that Analog Devices that delivers the audio chip for my Touchsmart doesn't offer any driver downloads, and refers back to the PC maker. And there is no audio driver when looking at downloads for my model on HP's site...
Anyway, inspired by this article http://forum.onmac.net/showthread.php?t=1239 I went ahead looking in the Registry and found this key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000\AD1984A\FrontShutsOffInternalSpeaker
and when I set it to REG_BINARY:00 it seems to do mostly what I want, always leaving the internal speakers on. The only little annoyance is that it it leaves the speakers on both when I plug into the headphones jack and the rear line out jack, while I would have preferred to keep the auto-shutoff feature for the headphone jack.
    Best regards
    Mike

  • Can't find the option to switch between MacBook speakers and Airplay speakers in iTunes 11.

In iTunes 10, the button to switch speakers was in the bottom right corner, now I can't find it anywhere. Does anyone know where it is, or if for some reason they removed this feature?!

  • My sound switches from internal speakers to apple Tv and i dont have an apple tv device

I am having problems with sound. My speakers will switch from internal speakers to Apple TV for no reason when I am on a certain wifi network and ask for a password. I do not have an apple TV and in order for the sound to come out on the internal speakers i have to manually go into the preferences and switch back to internal speakers. This does this constantly while i am listening to music. Is there a way to shut off the feature so it will stay on internal speakers? This has happened ever since i made the upgrade to OS mountain lion. I never did this before. Thank you for your help.

Are you sure that WIFI network doesn't have an AppleTV on it?  Just because you don't own it doesn't mean there isn't one on that network.  The laptop or better said the OS cannot differentiate between an AppleTV that you own or not.  If it sees one on the network, it will show you one as being available.  The automatic reconnection is happening probably because the last time you streamed to an AppleTV, you didn't drop that connection before sleeping the computer or shutting down iTunes.

  • When external speakers are plugged in to headphone jack, sound randomly goes back to internal speakers or digital audio setting, then back again

I have an essentially new MacBook Pro with Lion and all updates applied, and am wondering if this is a hardware or software problem.  Essentially with something plugged into the headphone jack, things work as they are supposed to for a while, then the sound will switch back to internal speakers, or sometimes 'digital out' (I can watch it change in the system settings), and then often switch back.  It doesn't seem to follow any sort of pattern or be related to any specific application that could be open, and happens with different sources of audio (iTunes, streaming from the web), and different external speakers or headphones plugged in.

Sounds hardware related. If it's brand new, and you're still under warranty I would have it checked out.
I have not experienced this on my computer.
As I understand it, you have analog RCA outputs from an 1/8" to left and right RCA outputs. when you're randomly using the computer, it'll switch to internal speakers, then to digital audio, back to your stereo analog external speakers.
This should not be happening and if it's happening with streaming content (I am unaware of anything that streams in 5.1 digital audio) then this must be something that an apple specialist should look at and consider.
Does this happen with the headphone jack out? when you hold your finger over the headphone jack area does a red beam come out of it *blinking* or just on? This will be a good indicator that your audio hardware is faulty. are you running HDMI out?

  • My 3GS keeps switching between iPhone speaker and Dock connector and I don't know how to keep it on iPhone speaker

My 3GS keeps switching between iPhone speaker and Dock connector and I don't know how to keep it on iPhone speaker so I can listen to my music and games.  Is it hardware or software problem?

I was told by a friend that sometimes when you use a 3rd party charger that the connectors are not the same size and so it can affect the sensors in the phone and make it seem like it is in a docking station and so changes the output for dock speakers.  With that said, I didn't take my pohone in to be serviced at the appple store because it was a 3GS and over 2 years old and so not covered by any service plan.  Since then my phone is back to normal and I can use my headphones and listen with the speakers on the phone.  I stoped using the suspected cheap 3rd party charger and maybe that's what did it, but not sure if it was or wasn't the cause of my problem.  I'm glad that my phone is better I was kinda holding out for the Iphone 5 when i comes out later and hope my phone lasted until then.

  • Internal speakers and audio output gone from System preferences

i can't get macbookpro 2010 to recognize internal speakers and audio output. only optical OUTPUT. CAN'T GET ANY SOUND EXCEPT FOR OPTICAL PORT

yes it is on, i have tried reinserting headphone plugs to possibly release micro switch but no avail. i tried resetting PRAM and that also did not work. this just happened over the last day or so. can't figure out what made it do this. i have no optical device, so the switch shouldn't have triggered.

  • How to switch to internal speakers IMAC 21.5

New to mac...I am unable to switch audio output back to internal speakers. Output is stuck on built in output and I am getting now sound what so ever. help

On the laptop lines, there's an issue where occasionally the headphone jack gets stuck in digital mode. So look at the headphone jack on your system, and if you see a red light coming from it, it's stuck in digital mode. Most of the time if you just plug something in a time or two it'll give it the kick in the pants it needs.
If there's no red light, and you're sure the output section of the sound preferences is set to the internal speakers, and you're sure the volume isn't all the way down or muted... Then you will probably need to take it to a local AASP or Apple store to get it looked at/fixed.

Nope, two names for the same thing.
You may have to change some settings of either the TV or the Panasonic system to output to the optical port (TV) and input from the optical port (surround receiver).

  • HELP! How do I get rid of the volume noise that plays when I switch from internal speakers to external speakers?

How do I get rid of the volume noise that plays when I switch from internal speakers to external speakers? I'm trying to watch something on my TV through an HDMi cable (& apple adapter) and when I go to switch the sound control in preferences from internal speakers to SONY TV, the annoying "popping" noise occurs on my TV's speakers.

Go to Edit > Preferences > General > Import Settings and check the box for error correction, and then try one of the problem CDs again.

  • Internal speakers and headphones are not working

I have hp g6 2231tx os Windows 8, brought it a month ago..now it's internal speakers and headphones are not working..I enabled in playback device from sound mixer and reinstalled drivers but still not working..it's because of hardware or software??

    Hi,
It could be either Hardware or Software related, so try the following and let me know.
Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp58501-59000/sp58517.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
Let Windows fully load - it will automatically load an audio driver, but just let this complete.  Then open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices.  Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if you now have audio.

  • Switching between page layout and word processing

I can't seem to switch between page layout and word processing view.  I've read all the posts on this and still can't figure out why I can't just type a document into Pages.  The only option I have in page layout view is to type into text boxes, which is not what I want.  I just want to type a letter for crying out loud.
Before I get all the rants about reading User Guides, etc.  *I have*.  I've also searched on here and in-app help and just don't understand the fuzzy/non-existant answers.  Obviously, I'm a newbie, so please don't jump all over me for this.  If it was Word - I could do this in NO time.  I just find it incredibly frustrating that inputting a normal document should be so difficult.
Is "Pages" *not* a word processing program?  Is it just a cut and paste application?  Sorry for the tone - I mean no disrespect - it's just that I've been fooling around with this for DAYS and I just don't have time to spare anymore.  I really need to get this done.
Can somebody give me a straightforward answer on how to just type a normal document into pages without using text boxes?
Thanks and I apologize for not being mac-savvy.  It took some of us a lot longer to see the light =)

Here is a script doing the conversion task for you.
    Open a Page Layout document
    run this script:
    --{code}
set p2t to (path to temporary items from user domain) as text
set path_2_doc to p2t & (do shell script "date +_%Y%m%d_%H%M%S.doc")
    tell application "Pages"
      save document 1 in path_2_doc
      open file path_2_doc
    end tell
    --{code}
    that's all folks.
