Software to Clone all Partitions on Disk (Mac and Bootcamp)?

After looking around I can find utilities to backup Mac partitions and others to backup NTFS, but I can't find one tool to do both. Any suggestions (either Mac or Windows)?  I simply want to make a drive clone including all partitions before swapping out my drive for a bigger one.

Just curious,
wouldn't built-in OS X Disk Utility "imaging" feature do the same? I've done this before on some install DVDs and my own Mac HDD and never had any trouble. Not sure, how it would handle Boot Camp, but give it a shot.
Boot off of your Snow Leopard Install DVD
Start the Disk Utility
Create New Image
Set format to DVD/CD Master
Set encryption to none
Let me know, I'm curious myself. I don't run Boot Camp
If you have a PC available, you could consider Norton Ghost.
All you need is to start your Mac in Target Disk Mode - holding "T" while starting your Mac up will turn it into a simple FireWire external disk and never boot up the OS.
This won't work unfortunately, but Carbon Copy is free (donationware) and it works.

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Resized partition using Disk Utility and now Windows 7 will not boot

    Hi,
    Hopefully someone can help me!!
I had previously used Boot Camp to install Windows 7. However, I later realised I had not given myself anywhere near enough disk space as I started using Windows for things I hadn't originally planned on using it for.
Anyway, long story short, to solve the problem I uninstalled some applications on my Mac OSX and used Disk Utility to decrease the size of my Mac partition. My plan was then to reboot to Windows and use a Windows application to increase the size of the Windows partition. However - I coudln't even get that far.
Upon decreasing the size of my Mac partition (succesfully) I restarted my Mac in order to boot to Windows. However, I was greeted with a message along the lines of "unable to boot to Windows please insert boot disk and press any key" (I can't remember the exact message).
I was wondering if anyone knows of any way to restore my Windows partition, retaining all of my previously saved files on my Windows disk. It's probably a long shot, but the thought of losing everything I have been working on for the last few months is a sickening one.
What does give me a bit of hope is that, if I click Boot Camp it seems to recognise that Windows 7 is installed as the option that appears is to uninstall it.
Furthermore, if I view partitions in Disk Utility, a "DISK0S4" is listed. However, it's only at 20gb - if this WAS my BootCamp partition previously, it was originally at something around 60gb (I think - either way, definitely bigger than 20gb!).
On top of this, my current Macintosh HD parition is at 260gb and with the DISK0S4 partition at 20.21gb, there seems to be some space missing... I'm hoping this is the files I've been working on over the last few months!
Anyway, I've done some searching on the net and it *seems* that GPT fdisk *might* be my savour. I've downloaded it but have no idea how to use it and don't plan on playing about with it as I could no doubt do some real damage. If it is likely to solve my problem however, I'm certainly more than capable of being walked through what I need to do.
    Please help!

    Hi Christopher,
I also have problems with Windows rebooting after partition resize trying to reduce Mac side and increase Windows side. I do not see the BootCamp partition labelled as such while running disk utility. The Windows partition shows up when I boot up while pressing the ALT key. However, when I try to run Windows, it says " error loading operatig system".
I also followed instruction and went through to run gdisk successfully. Results towards the end.
What can be done? Windows still does not boot and It shows ? Suspicious MBR at sector 0.

  • Partitioning Drive for Mac and PC to deliver 10GB video file

I need to deliver several video files to a client on a drive.
Because some of the clips are over 10GB I cannot use the drive in its current FAT state.
I want / need the drive to be read by both Mac AND PC.
If this is the case, and I cannot use FAT, should I partition the drive into TWO partitions?
If so, should I then make one partition for Mac and the other for PC... then upload the video files twice, once to each partition?
Is there an alternative? How do I make the drive partitioned for both allowing the video to be ready by both Mac and PC.
Can I do what needs to be done using Disk Utility?
What 2 formats should I use? Is MS-DOS (FAT) the windows based partition, and is that the only one? And won't that not work for my issue of needing to load a file over 4 gigs?
What partition scheme do I want? It appears I can only use one partition scheme... or is this incorrect?
    I'm using Mac OS X 10.5.5
Computer is Mac G5. Drive is the WD 250GB passport.
    Thanks

If you format the drive as Microsft NTFS, there will be no problem with split files.

  • When I boot holding option, both Mac and Bootcamp partitions show up, but disappear after 2 seconds.

I recently swapped out my HDD for an SSD in my 2007 MBP. Hardware installed fine. I installed Mountain Lion from a time machine backup (of the same machine). I made the Windows partition in OSX, then installed Windows 7 on the partition it had made. In Windows, I updated Bootcamp to 3.3.
Everything seems to work fine in both OSX and Bootcamp from what I can tell. The problem is, when I boot and hold option to choose my boot drive, both drives appear and then disappear in about 2 seconds. They disappear with a "poof" animation, as if you had dragged an app off of the dock. If I'm fast enough, I can choose the boot drive before it disappears.
I tried once again reinstalling OSX from my last time machine backup (prior to the SSD swap), and the problem persists.
I thought it might have something to do with NTFS 3G and MacFuse, because I'd heard that they cause a bug where the bootcamp partition won't show up under the "startup disk" preferences pane. When I uninstalled said programs, bootcamp showed up under there startup disk options, but the problem persists.
    Any ideas?

Actually, this is just getting weirder.
Disregard my edit above. Clicking once doesn't have any effect on the drives. But the drives disappear only coming off of a RESTART from OSX. If I Shut down fully, the problem is solved. Likewise, if the drives have disappeared after a restart and I am forced to turn off the computer by pressing the power button, upon boot up the drives no longer disappear (Regardless of any action I take).
It would seem that the drives are disappearing due to something during the restart process.
Okay: Here are some workflows that might shed light on the situation:
Boot to Mac -> Shut down -> Alt boot : DOES NOT DISAPPEAR
Boot to Mac -> Restart -> Alt boot: DISAPPEARS
Boot to Mac -> Shut Down -> Alt boot -> Boot to Windows -> Shutdown or restart -> Alt boot : DOES NOT DISAPPEAR
Boot to Mac -> Restart -> Alt boot & fast select -> Boot to Windows -> Shutdown or restart -> Alt boot: DISAPPEARS
Boot to Mac -> Restart -> Alt boot & disappears -> Turn power off -> alt boot: DOES NOT DISAPPEAR
So the core culprit is something to do with OSX restart. The method of shutdown during windows doesn't seem to matter.

  • ITunes match does not work on my iPhone 4S, but is working across all of my other Macs and iOS devices.  All other iCloud services are working fine on the 4S - any suggestions?

iTunes match is not working on my iPhone 4S; it works awesome across all of my Macs and other iOS devices (iPad 2, iPod Touch 4g x 2, and my wife's iPhone 4).  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

It is not possible to "toggle back and forth" at will. If you associate a device with an Apple ID and you have iTunes Match enabled you must wait 90 days before you can associate it with another Apple ID. See this Apple KB article for more information: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4627

  • Since installing Mac Mavericks all my friends with Macs and I have problems with the cursor disappearing, only in Firefox, Safari is fine...

I have stopped using Firefox as nothing I have done has fixed this problem. I have tried shutting down Firefox and rebooting it, I cleared all my add-ons and then added adblock back (that's the only one) but it still doesn't work. I've deleted large files so that I have more space - I can't think of anything else that will work. I have spoken to four of my friends with Macs and they are all having the same problem with Firefox since Mavericks.

Hi thanks very much for your reply. I did a few things like delete my add-ons and I don't have the problem of the disappearing cursor (sounds like a Sherlock Holmes story) any more but it seems to have been a mac issue as there were many complaints on the Apple forums of the cursor disappearing since the Mavericks OS and not just in Firefox but in multiple programs. Looks like they've fixed it somehow!

  • Yipee, Project completed Now need to remove all project off my Mac and save

I have completed a 1:17:00 minute project. I now want to remover everything off my Mac and save the project either on Disc or Lacie or ?. Is there a way to save everything, capture scratch, footage, etc to disc or a hard drive? I also need to know what I should be saving to ensure everything is there in storage. I would like to free the spaced used for this project. I do not want anything part of this project remaining on my Mac. I would like to burn this project to disc and if I need to ever need to open it again I have all the information there, without have to go back into my original tapes.
    Thank you!
    B C

I too just finished a big project (three performances of "The Nutcracker" with shot with two cameras, for a total of about 12 hours' worth of capture files, edited down to one final 2-hour presentation) so this thread is a good find for me! It's worth it just to know I don't have to save the contents of the Render Files and Audio Render Files folders, but I've still got something like 200 gb of data.
If you're looking for an alternate suggestion of how to save all the stuff, here's something I found: I went to Best Buy and bought a PC gamer accessory called a Black Widow, from a company called Thermaltake. It costs about $60 and connects via a USB port, and yes, it's Mac-compatible.
It has a slot in the top that accepts a bare SATA hard drive mechanism -- either a standard-size 3.5" or laptop-size 2.5." You just plug the drive mechanism into the slot and it appears on your Mac desktop, where it can be formatted, copied, etc., like any other drive. I already had several SATA drive mechanisms around from upgrading the internal drives on various Macs, so I figure all I need to do is copy all my project files onto one, put it back into its anti-static bag, and store it somewhere safe.

  • What format should I made a shared external hard drive between Mac and bootcamp?

We have a small office running both macs and windows 7 on macs in bootcamp.
Currently we have 1 "master computer" which is a mac that stores all the data formatted in mac os extended (journaled). But we are always having rights issues with that and if that users machine is off, or having network problems we loose access.
The proposal is to get a new router with USB port and have a networked disk on where all the shared files are stored. The question is, what should the disk be formatted to?
As I have said the mac machines run bootcamp with 1 employee perminantly on windows 7. His hard drive is NTSC. As a side note I don't understand How can he open the networked shared files from the master mac!?
Ideally we want to search the folder for its contents from both mac and PC and I think this won't be possible if it is FAT32 formatted.
1 machine is the master mac
another is runs both mac and boot camp occasionaly.
    3rd machine runs bootcamp constantly.
    all macs are Lion 10.7.5
    all bootcamp is windows 7.
    we are in the uk
router is also our internet connection
we don't want an expensive server if we can help it.
    Suggestions?

    Fat32
Extfat or fat16bit is just poor Mans fat32 where you get more then 8 chars filenames but not support for large volumens
And msdos is fat8 which is useles

  • Backup of Mac and BootCamp when OSX doesn't boot

I would like to backup my Vista bootcamp installation before reinstalling OSX. My OSX isn't booting, DiskWarrior4 isn't booting either, and OSX-InstallDVD doesn't see any partitions on the drive (although Vista is still booting).
Any ideas how I can backup/restore the Vista bootcamp? What program can I use?

Vista (Business, Ultimate) has its own. Or there is Acronis etc that are all native.
Install OS X on an external drive. Put Disk Warrior (and others) on that.
WinClone seems buggy, the recent update wouldn't work (again) even though I have used Vista for two years and recently reinstalled after reformat etc.
You might want to look at the "why" and try to figure out what you did or happened.

For iTunes purchases you need iTunes

For other music you  need a third-party program like one of those discusses here:

  • TS4050 I keep losing most of my contacts from all my devices. I enter new ones and the next morning they are gone again on all my devices, iPad Mac and iPhone 4s

I had 874 contacts yesterday and they were all synchronized with all my other Mac products. This morning only 134 are left on all devices. I entered another 34 more entries into the iCloud contacts and they synchronized with all the devices and this morning they are all gone and back to 134 yet again.
    Anyone any ideas.

Thank you - I have done this now but resetting and restoring from another device didn't really help. However, syncing via iTunes was a bit more successful as it occurred to me that many of my contacts are in MS Outlook on my PC and I was able to copy them over.  There are still some contacts missing and I am continuing to try and figure out where they originate from to try and get them to show up.

  • How to synchronize iPhone with iTunes in Mac and BootCamp.

    Hi,
I have a Macbook Pro and recently I purchased an iPhone. For work reasons I use windows as well as Mac OS ( I prefeer MacOS by in my company we develop windows software...)
The problem is that I synchronized my iPhone with iTunes in Windows and I want to use my iPhone with Mac iTunes too.
I think a possible solution is to use the same library in the two OS, and I don't know if it is possible.
In Mac OS I don't have write access to BootCamp's NTFS file-system partition, so I use a Windows software to full acces to Mac OS partition. For me the solution would be to place windows iTunes library files in MacOS partition and use these files with MacOS iTunes as library too, but I don't know if it's possible.
If anyone have any other idea how to solve this problem...
    Thanks,
    Raul

All your contacts, photos, music etc. should be on your computer, so you just sync the second iPhone to the same computer as the first iPhone.

  • Backup of Mac and BootCamp

Can I partition an external drive into two, so that one partition can be used with Time Machine to back up the Mac partiton, and the other can be used to backup Boot Camp using Winclone?

So you mean that even if I have a separate partition on the external backup drive for backing up the Boot Camp partition, that partition has to be in Mac OS format or FAT32 format, but not in NTFS format, otherwise Winclone cannot write to it? Therefore you do not have a separate partition, but instead run Winclone to write the backup onto the same partition where TM writes to. Is that correct?
