  • How to Open a rar file with downloaded software

I was bothering this forum yesterday trying to find some way to get a file opened that I had downloaded. Today I discovered that my problem was that "rar" files need their own software to enable them to be opened....So I downloaded the software UnRarX...and it is now sitting on the bottom of my desktop...but I can not get the software into the Applications folder, and so I can not figure out how to use this little package of software to open my "rar" files...
What do I have to do to open my files with this new software???
    Thanks..
    Miguel

    HI,
The UnRarX application should be accessible from your Dock after installing the software. The application icon looks like this:
"How to extract a rar archive?"
    1. Launch UnRarX.
    2. Drag rar archive into the UnRarX window.
    3. Extraction begins automatically.

  • How to Join .RAR files in OS X

My friend burned something for me that's in 2 parts. Each part is a .rar file. How under OS X can these files be joined?
The reason he split it into two parts is because it wouldn't fit onto one DVD.
    Help is much appreciated. Thanks!

I know Stuffit Expander will join RAR files, as I've done it.

  • Software to open McDraw image files

Need Tiger 10.4.11 compatible software to open MacDraw image files created in 1985-88 period that were used in a book I authored.
Appleworks cannot 'see' them. Any ideas short of tearing a book apart and scanning them.. which would preclude being able to alter them.

Image files may also be opened by http://www.lemkesoft.com/ 's GraphicConverter if they are non-vector in origin.

  • Opening an .rar file and converting flac files

I am not sure this belongs in this topic area but since iTunes is the ultimate destination of this file I posted here.
I have a .rar file. It is a compressed file when unzipped will have FLAC audio files in the folder. I need to know how I unzip the .rar file and then how to convert the FLAC file to AIFF or ALAC for use in iTunes.

OK, you have 2 jobs ahead of you.
First you need to uncompress the RAR archive. Find a tool that will do this on the Mac. Although I have not personally used it, UnRARx would be a possibility.
When it is unpacked, you will see a folder containing the FLAC files. FLAC is the number one format for lossless audio, but iTunes is unable to handle it. So, use a conversion tool such as Switch for the Mac, and convert the files to AIFF, ALAC, or AAC. Add the converted files to your iTunes library.
Then unless you need them for some non-iTunes purpose, you can discard the RAR archive and the FLACs.

  • How Do I Open A .rar File??

    hey guys
i just downloaded a .rar file that is suppossed to contain a bunch of .mp3 files but can't figure out what to do with the .rar file!?
here is the file that i'm downloading if that helps..

    thanks!

There is no native support for .rar files in OS X. You need to use one of the third party applications referenced above. The most commonly used one is StuffIt Expander which will automatically associate .rar and other compression types.

  • Software to open a XFDL file

I am trying to open an XFDL file, used for military forms.  Form viewer will not work. I have mounted the image in addition to many other things.  I have a CAC card reader and I still cant find a program.  Any suggestions?

I have same issue trying to work on Air Force Officer Performance Report with the XFDL ext. I tired Adobe reader 9 & Word 2011 both gave error message & couldn't open file.
Apple TextEdit was able to open - you could rescue some text if needed but to wade through the lines of code to extract large amount of text or to attempt edit would be a nightmare.
Unfortunately best option I've found thus far is to use emulator like Parallels or VMWare Fusion and run the blasted GOV MIL program shackled to Windows. Grrrr
I do have an old Mac version of IBM Workplace Forms Viewer (2006?) however it will only allow you to view NOT edit or even print or save the forms. If you only want to view that might be an option if the pgm is even available anymore? It was once a free download on a GOV grants site.

  • I must be doing something wrong because none of the Adobe software can open my RAW files.

None of the adobe software recognize the RAW files from my Nikon D7100. I had no problems opening raw files from my D5000.   I even tried to convert them to DNG but that didn't work either. I have used Lightroom, Photoshop CC, Bridge, Photoshop Elements 13, Photoshop 8.  I wasn't able to see my Raw files in windows either until I downloaded NEC codec...and, of course, I can see them in the Nikon software.  I have 8 folders of pics taken with the new camera.  In the last folder, I can see and work with my RAW files and in one folder, there is one RAW file I can work with.  All the rest are blank and won't open.  In one folder, Lightroom won't even show the JPEGs. I shoot in RAW + (JPEG) FINE. I've downloaded all the files the same way.  I will try to download them again, but not all of them are still on the card.  I even tried to convert them to DNG, but if they can't be seen as RAW, they won't convert to DNG. The D7100 has been out for a while, so I can't believe that Adobe wouldn't work for it.

    mellyortendahl:
The IMG_6564.CR2 file on dropbox is corrupted in that it is missing most of the raw data which is why PS and LR cannot open it.  For this specific file, at least, the camera-embedded-jpg preview is intact and can be extracted, so while not as good as the raw file, it is better than nothing.
Here is what IrfanView shows for the raw image:
Here is the camera-embedded jpg-preview as show in Windows Photo Viewer:
I was able to extract the camera-embedded jpg preview using EXIF Tool, with the following command:
    exiftool -b -PreviewImage -w _preview.jpg -ext cr2 -r ./.
where ./.means the current folder in the CMD window.  If the images were in a different folder, for example C:\Pictures, then the last part of the command would be -r C\Pictures
This created a IMG_6564_preview.jpg from the original IMG_6564.CR2 file.
The next step is to copy all the metadata over from the CR2 to its corresponding preview.jpg file:
    exiftool -tagsfromfile %d%-.8f.cr2 -all:all -r -overwrite_original -ext jpg ./.
You can read about these two commands, here:http://ninedegreesbelow.com/photography/exiftool-commands.html#extract
ExifTool can be downloaded from the Windows Executable box near the top of the page at the following website, and once you download the extiftool-whatever.zip then extract exfitool(-k).exe then rename exiftool(-k).exe to exiftool.exe and copy it to the folder where your CR2 files reside then run the two commands, above to extract all the embedded previews:
    ExifTool by Phil Harvey
Finally, it would be wise to determine why the files are corrupted.  Usually it is the memory card, itself, that is going bad.  Are all the images bad or just one here and there?

  • ERROR in Opening and RUNNING. EXE and .RAR files of Third Party softwarea

    Hello,
I downloaded  third party softwares having .EXE and .RAR file extension. But none of these files open up  and
I can NOT RUN them and install them on my WINDOWS 7  System.
It is possible , some of the associations of these files might have been missing or may have been damaged earlier by any Virus . At moments my system is Virus-Free and clean. Even  downloaded Third Party softwares  are Virus-Free and clean
as shown by my Anti-Virus software
Can any body help me to fix up these issues , or to RESTORE .EXE and .RAR  file extentions , so that I can RUN and install these Third party softwares on my PC
My EMail ID : [email protected]
    Thanks,
    Shashikant

    Hi,
What do you mean by saying "to RESTORE .EXE and .RAR file extentions " here?
Any applications(or softwares) that with .EXE extention could not be run on your PC or only related to some specific application?
Please take a look at the KB below:
Can't open .EXE files in Windows 7 or Windows Vista
Regarding .rar files, we might need some 3rd party tools to extract them and then take the install option.
    Hope this may help
    Best egards

  • Stuffit 10 opens rar file to folder..... now at dead end....... anyone?

Stuffit Expander 10 opened a rar file but then after opening the created folder, I click on install and/or setup and stuffit seems to be the wrong program to open folder. I can't seem to choose anything that will open this file.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I've never seen a .rar with Mac software inside. It's mainly a Windows archive file format (even if Stuffit can decompress it). So, go back to whereever you downloaded it from and check the system requirements...if it doesn't say Mac (in any variety) you probably can't install it.
The primary archive formats you'll see for mac software are:
    .dmg (disk image/OS X)
    .img (disk image/classic)
    .bin (bin hex/classic)
    .hqx (stuffit/classic)
    .sit (stuffit/both)
    .sitx (stuffit/OS X)
For command-line/Terminal/X11 software (a lot of which is compile-yourself) you might also see:
    .tar (tape archive...not actually compressed)
    .bz2 (bzip 2, a unix-type zip file)
.gz (gzip, another unix-type zip file)
    .tar.bz2
    .tar.gz
For just plain documents, but not usually software you'll sometimes see .zip (from winzip, but it's a popular cross platform compression sceme).
But .rar? I know of it, but have never seen it on a Mac. Also, there's a vulnerability in the .rar compression scheme that can spit out a virus when being decompressed during a virus scan. The virus will not likely infect a Mac, but it can mean your files can become a carrier if you pass the affected one to a PC.
In summary, stay away from .rar's

  • Opening .rar files

I tried opening a .rar file with no luck. What program should I get to open these zipped files. I want something free. Or maybe there is something on my iMac that I'm not aware of.
    Regards, Pat

There's a freebie here I've used. Has worked for my use so far (for the few times I've needed to open a .rar file). rar is rarely used on the Mac, so there's little support out there for it.
Stuffit also opens RAR files. The item linked to above is the only way to create RAR archives on the Mac. That is, from the Terminal as a command line only application. There has been no one yet that has written a RAR utility to create such files from the GUI that I've been able to find.

Try downloading an App which handles RAR files like iUnarchive. See http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/iunarchive/id368411864?mt=8
If you have this App Mail will offer you an option to Open in... this App when you touch the attachment in Mail.
