Software to play Windows Media on Mac?

I have tried downloading Flip4mac and other software to play windows Media streams and have not been able to get them to work. What other software is there?

Flip4Mac is the plug in of choice for me. Reply with any site address that you're having a problem with and I'll see what happens on my system.
I just posted the following reply to someone else about this issue:
There are some sites that have a weird, unsupported format for their WMV. On occasion I'll send an email to [email protected] and see if they can't get any particular site to work. Sometimes I'll see that happen in an update for F4M.
Also, anything protected with the digital rights media thing (DDR) is off limits..that's a given.
Anyway...it's mostly a PC world with video out there, and when it comes to WMV, F4M is our best tool, but now and again a content provider will box out the Mac population with some unique codec wrapped in a WMV shell...their bad.

Windows Media files do not play with Mac OS X's built-in software.
With additional plugins or software, one has the option of playing non-DRM based Windows Media video and audio files within Mac OS X.
On Intel Macs there's the option of running Windows or WINE based virtualization titles to play Windows Media files.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/mac/mp9/default.aspx
together with http://www.stuffit.com/ 's Stuffit Expander (which expands Microsoft's old .sit and .hqx archives).
Or one of these virtualization solutions*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#WINTEL
which lets you install Windows or WINE based software on your Intel Mac for use with Windows DRM files you have license to play.
PowerPC Mac based emulation of video and audio is very poor.

  • How can I play windows media aduio files?Need help...

Oh ,I bought a N70 in China. It is not all the same as the product which sold in Euro.It doesn't have the anterior camera .And my N70 can't play the windows media aduio files from my classical music CDs,I tried several software but all failed. What's the matter?
    Thanks for replay!
    Good luck to ereryone !

WMAPlus! says it plays Windows Media Audio on phones like the N70 (based on S60 2nd Ed.):
    http://my-symbian.com/s60/software/applications.php?fldAuto=1427&faq=2
I believe it does not handle DRM (Digital Rights Management) protected WMA files, though.
Also, there's no S60 3rd Edition version (but then there are S60 3rd Edition based models with WMA support built-in, such as the N91).

  • RE: Using Windows Media for Mac

Please Help!! I have downloaded music to my Mac from Sprint.com. The music files are .wma! I did download Windows Media for Mac so that I can play my although when I attempt to play the music the message on Windows Media is that the path and name of file are wrong and therefore it does not play the music at all. Any suggestions.

You should use flip4mac it has replaced the windows media player for mac. I would also suggest Perian as it adds to QTimes abilities.

  • Making QT play Windows media 10 / ASF files?!

    Hey guys,
I have the latest version of quicktime pro installed on 10.4.10, with the flip4mac codes and a k-lite codec pack installed.
I am trying to play windows media 10 files, in particular on this website:
http://www.bloomberg.com (click one of the vids on the main page)
But its no good! I cna see the video stream, but there is no audio.
So basically im wondering, does any1 have a solution/codec for this type of file?
From what i can tell its a windows media 10 stream using asf technology.
I hope someone can get me on my way.
    thanks in advance!
    cheers,

    Hi Patrick!
What an irritating and badly made site! Once on it you cannot get back here by using the back button!
Normally I would recommend the following setup, but Bloomberg is one of the very rare exceptions that I cannot see. They seem to be completely Windows-oriented. Fortunately there are other news sites that work!
    And for those:
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
Assuming you already run OS 10.4.9 or above and have Quicktime 7.2, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer from http://uk.real.com/player/
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
    Adobe FlashPlayer from http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
In Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them).
    Now repair permissions and restart.
The world should now be your oyster! (except Bloomberg!)
You should also have the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.

  • How to play Windows media in Safari browser in Ipod touch ??

Any idea , How to play Windows media in Safari browser in Ipod touch ??

I'm pretty sure you can't . Only .mp4 or anything quicktime supports.

  • After migrating to a retina macbook with mountain lion I can not play windows media player files with flip4mac anymore

After migrating to a retina macbook with mountain lion I can not play windows media player files anymore. I use flip4mac pro 3.0 and quicktime 7.6.6.
The message I receive is: De bewerking kan niet worden voltooid. (OSStatus fout -50). I also have problems with zip files that can not be saved on the desktop anymore while unzipping.

I actually installed Quicktime pro and Flip4Mac Pro again after I bought the Retina Macbook. Today I did it again but still get the same OSStatus error -50. I guess there is some old file that has to be removed. Flip4Mac comes with an uninstaller. Quicktime does not.
I read that his could be something with security that is why I mention the problem with the zip files as well.

  • Window Media on Mac

Is there a way to play Windows Media Videos on my iMac? Please help.

    Welcome to the Forums!
You need Flip4Mac, which will allow you to play .wmv files in QuickTime Player (and within your web browser too).
You can also use the VLC player to view .wmv files.

  • How do I successfully play Windows Media (asx) files on a Mac?

I have access to live streaming of foreign TV programming, but only with WM asx files. I can play them perfectly with Windows Media Player on a PC, but no luck with WMPlayer 9.0 on my Mac. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can play these streams on my Mac? Thanks!

The free Windows Media Components for QuickTime support ASX files, according to features list.
It will probably not work in iTunes, only Quicktime.
I have no experience with ASX-files, so I can't tell you if it indeed works.

  • Bloomberg Videos don't play (Windows Media Player for Mac installed)

Hi - I tried to watch a video from Bloomberg.com. It did not work even after i installed the Windows Media player. Has anyone resolved this issue, which many users must have given the popularity of the Bloomberg.com site? Thanks.

That program is out of date. Use Flip4Mac with QuickTime Player or your web browser instead.

  • Is There a way to play Windows Media files on the IMac?

Windows Media Player 9 does not work for intel model, neither do the Quicktime components. Any other alternatives?

I have had good luck converting the WMA files to mp3s, which my iTunes see and play with no problem.
    Here is how.
    1. Open WMP9 and select copy from CD
    2. from the TOOLS menu at the top select OPTIONS
    3. From OPTIONS select the COPY MUSIC tab.
    4. In the COPY MUSIC page half way down under "copy settings" you will
see a radio window with a drop down menu. The window is labeled
    FORMAT.
    5. Change the window (typically it is in "Windows Media Audio" to
"MPEG Layer-3." There is a good instructional tip link right next to
the drop-down window labeled "Learn more about MP3 formats."
    6. Remember to hit APPLY on the tab at the bottom of the page,
    then close out.
Now when you copy music into your PC it will be in a medium that both the mac and the PC can use.
Some notes: If you plan to copy music from your computer to use in your car stereo do so on a CD-R, otherwise there is a good chance the car stereo wont see it.
You can copy all of your iTunes on a DVD+R, but only your Mac will be able to play them. It is a good way to archive them, but nothing else will play them. WMP9 won't even see them.
If you don't have the original CDs and are trying to transfer music that is in WMA format you will have to copy it to a CD first, typically a CD that is a Playlist. Then reinstall it as an MP3. When you pull up your menu in WMP9 you will then see the same song repeated twice, but one will have a much smaller file space (the MP3). and will be labled as an MP3. I would suggest keeping both versions if you have the hard drive space, since many ultraportable devices anymore require on or the other.
As for the WMP9 not working on the iMac, are you sure you activated it? Mine works fine now that I have 2 gigs of RAM. My iMac came with 512, and would routinely freeze up and crash on just about anything. Once I put 2 gigs in it, it became a whole new machine. It works about as well as any PC I have ever seen, and even better than some.
I would strongly suggest that if the WMP on your iMac is not accepting WMA files from your PC that you call their tech help. Those folks are great!
    Hope this helps,
    Doug

  • Using Windows Media for Mac OS X

When I try to download and open Windows Media for the Mac OS X, I get the message "There is no default application specified to open the document "Windows Media.stix" with a tab marked 'choose application' under that.
Naturally, I know what to do, or what application to choose....not. What application am I supposed o choose to open the download and how am I supposed to know that?
    thank you!

Thanks for the message and info.
Before I install Flip4Mac, I should probably uninstall the Windows Media Player for OS X first, correct? In my application folder, I have an icon marked "uninstallflash_playerosx.dmg". (I also have "installflash_player_9_ubbeta.dmg" in the applications folder as well.) Are these connected to the Windows Media installer, or are they something else? I don't know what they are or what they do.
Something is also definitely wrong with my chat functions--which relates to flash player, I think? In downloading interactive software or chat room functions from websites, I get the image of the recycled coffee cup---but that's it. Nothing starts, nothing works. I have 'enable java' 'enable javascript' and 'enable plug-ins' all checked under preferences in Safari.I have both java 1.4.2 and java 1.3.1 settings (with 1.4.2 as the default I guess, but am not positive).
Are the Windows Media and flash and chat functions related? Is there something else I should be doing to activate chat or interactive functions?
    Thanks again!

  • Can no longer play windows media files

I recently upgraded to version 10.6.8 of Mac OS X and I can no longer play embedded Windows Media files using Flip4Mac (version 2.3.8.1) on Safari or FireFox. Any suggestions on a workaround?

You might need to reinstall it, have you tried that?

  • Uninstalling "locked" windows media for mac

i recently installed microsoft's windows media player for mac, and i should have known better. my computer is acting strange, getting stuck. i tried to put it all in the trash, but it says i can't because half a million files are locked. i have tried to get info on these files to unlock them, but can't find them, and the ones i do find are unlocked. obviously i am not terribly great with the computer, and i really want to get this microsoft junk off my computer. anybody know how with step by step instructions' page i can go to? thanks much

    Welcome to the discussions!
How exactly did you install Windows Media Player for Mac? Or, you mean Flip4Mac? If you installed the first, it should be in your Applications folder. You can trash it, run Spotlight, find all relevant files and delete them from there. You can also find the application shortcut, Ctrl-click and from the dropdown menu, choose "Get Info". In the pane that will arise, look for permissions, make sure it's "read and write"-just to verify you haven't inadvertedly change privileges. ( Same goes for all applications, it's not specific to something ).
But, are you sure about the cause of your trouble? Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility > Repair permissions as a first step and make sure your Software is updated from System Preferences > Software Update. Also ( if you have Flip4Mac ), look up it's window pane at System Preferences and look if this also needs updating.
