Software to repair JPEG marker type corruption ???

I have a couple of corrupted JPEG files and I am unable to open them due to 'invalid JPEG marker type'.
Is there an software for the Mac to fix that ?
Thanks, Tom
iMac G5 2.0/1.5GB/250 GB   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Hi, Tom.
This Google Search turned up two suggestions:
1. Be sure the file has extension .jpg or .jpeg
2. Try opening the file in Graphic Converter, then performing a Save As. For Graphic Converter, click here.
There is no software that will fix corrupted files since there is no way of knowing what the file contained before it was corrupted.
If these files have been on your computer for some time, this is why one should implement and use a comprehensive "Backup and Recovery" solution.
Good luck!

    Could not complete your request because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found
    The above messagecomes up on a lot of my photoshop files that have been recovered from a damaged disk - can this be fixed?
    Thanks, Phil.

    That's a pretty good indication that the data inside the files is corrupted.
    You *might* be able to get some of the image back by opening it in different tools that can open JPEGs.  But very likely none will be able to recover all the image data perfectly.
    Check Irfan View as a viewer with some resiliency for opening corrupted files.

  • Invalid JPEG marker type is found

    I use a very old version of Photoshop (Adobe PS CS Version 8) for digital scrapbooking.  I store all of my files on an EHD because I have thousands, and I don't want to slow down my computer's performance.  It had been hooked up to my desktop, but I recently started attaching it to my MacBook.  When I hooked it up, I had to update my iPhoto libraries to work with my MacBook's version of iPhoto ('11).  So I did.  Now when I try to open my files, I get the error message that an invalid JPEG marker type is found.  Most of the files, aren't even jpegs, they are pngs or psds.
    Any ideas?  Can I undo what I've done?  I'm talking THOUSANDS of files!
    Thanks for any/all of your help!
    -J

    Either you have the wrong file extension on the files, or your files are corrupt and won't be readable.

  • Invalid JPEG marker type?

    I am a novice user of Photoshop and am using Photoshop CS6. When I adjust and crop a photo and save it as as JPEG  and then try to reopen it, Photoshop comes up with this message: 'Could not complete your request because an unknown or Invalid JPEG marker type is found". Could anyone help me fix this? Thank you

    Hi niagara94,
    Can you please share one of the problematic JPEG file.

  • JPEG marker segment length error - file not corrupt

    I have 2 workstations in my suite. Both Win7...both CS5.5 ver. 12.1.x64.  My "old" box (Z400) can open the JPEG no problem....My "new" box (Z820) gives me the error.
    I have copied the file a few different ways so I know it is not corrupt.
    Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    The error is "Could not complete your request because a JPEG marker segment length is too short (the file may be truncated to incomplete).
    I'll try the preferences resetting.
    Thanks for the quick responses.

  • Custom marker types for Prelude?

    What would be the way to add a custom marker type to Prelude, that could be used in addition to the default 6 marker types (subclip, comment, flash cue, weblink, chapter and speech)?
    I would like to have an ability to add a set of properties with a specific in-out time boundary to clips.  Looking into the CC Extension Builder and going through the Prelude API docs, but haven't found info on this yet.
    Through this forum, I understand that one can define a custom metadata schema, but that seems to allow new metedata for the entire clip, without the in-out time.   I also see that Prelude provides an UI to define marker templates, but it seems like templates would be based on existing marker types, thus I cannot add new property set(s) there.

    Hi Lei,
    I've put together a simple proof-of-concept build, and I have a bunch of questions(again).  May I ask you to take a look at the build here and share your insight when convenient?    Please let me know if there's a better place to do this than this forum.
    In general, it is great that custom markers and their base properties can be viewed alongside the standard markers.  I think it makes sense that our extension is responsible for providing UI for creating and editing the details of these markers.  I'm wondering how I can improve the integration of our markers into the existing UI, meanwhile.
    1) For the jsx run script error, is there a way to catch it as a caller, as opposed to displaying the alert dialog to the end user?
    2) Documentation about the marker xml format in general?  What is tagList?
    3) Is there a way to create a new marker type button in the "Marker Type" panel without adding an actual marker to the timeline?
    4) Any suggestion about better integrating with the Marker Type, Timeline and Marker Inspector panels in general?  For example it'll be nice if we can set color for our markers, if our markers can be grouped in subcategory in the pull-down menu, etc...
    5) Related to (2), it's not clear to me what the allowed characters are for xml.  I'm seeing that newline and blackout characters seems to be a problem in xml for addMarker call.    Is it intentional?  I also saw that a single-quote goes through, but occasionally (not always) comes back as "apos;" in the xml for that event's callback, example below.

  • A jpeg marker segment length is too short

    While imaging with my Canon T1i last night with my astro club I took probably 75 or 80 pics.  Halfway through the session, my battery low indicator came on, so I changed the battery but may not have turned off the camera....I can't remember.....as I continued to shoot and review the images, everything looked and worked fine.   When I returned home and got up this a.m. to review the pics, the last half could not be be opened.   I usually insert my SD card in my laptop to review first before I transfer them over.  I kept getting this error on the last half of the images I took :" a jpeg marker segment length is too short. The file may be truncated or incomplete."  Anybody seen this or have any experience with this?  Is there any way to recover and otherwise save these images?  Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.  By not turning the camera off while changing batteries, could that be the reason for the error message?  Thanks,  Gary

    It could be any one of a number of things such as the files being corrupted as the camera was writing them to the card, or a faulty card, a faulty USB connection or cable, etc.
    Use only high quality cards ans cables, preferably use a card reader, be careful how you handle the camera, how you change batteries, etc.  Common sense practices.

  • An unknown or invalid jpeg marker is found

    "an unknown or invalid jpeg marker is found"
    jpegs being corrupted when copied
    Each one, in different folders, copied from my MacBookPro’s desk top, all rendered out as a full sized jpeg, 300dpi, but then when I transfer them onto another HD, they all render out as the correct MB size (12MB etc), but they are sized 256 x 171 in the Bridge Info panel and none will open in Preview or Bridge or Photoshop, “Could not complete your request as an unknown or invalid jpeg marker is found"
    They worked fine originally. Other files etc work well on the HD. i do not use anything other than jpeg and the original RAW files so all extensions are correct.
    Thanks

    You are correct in that this particular message means your files are hosed.
    Your external HD could be going south, or the connection may be faulty, check all cable ends, the computer ports, etc.
    How are you "transferring" them?  That's a term that gives me hives.

  • Unable to open JPG file, getting "unknown or invalid JPEG marker was found", help needed

    Info:
    MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1
    Adobe Photoshop 64bit CS5 etxended (Version 12.0 x64)
    So downloaded some JPG files from the web and trying to use some of them as wallpapers. I am able to open them in Windows viewer and some other prgrams but they are the wrong size for my screen so I wanted to change the resolution and opened them into CS5 and sound that some of them would not open. I am getting the following error "Could not complete your request because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker was found" and yet there does not seem to be anything I can do to resolve this to open them into CS5.
    Any thoughts or advice?

    Open them into another viewer, copy, then FIle-New in Photoshop and Paste.
    Photoshop is picky and a file that does not properly follow the JPEG standards could cause this kind of problem.  Other apps are sometimes more forgiving.

  • Presenter 7 - how to insert marker type "Click" in Edit Audio dialog

    http://www.adobe.com/education/resources/hed/instructional/connect/collaborative_teaching/ pdfs/edit_audio_adobe_pres.pdf
    The above document includes information that you can add four types of markers by using the Audio Editor in Presenter and one of the marker types is mouse-click animation. I can't find a way to do it in reality. The only way to insert this type of market is in Edit Sync dialog, not in Edit Audio. This requires resynchronisation of the whole audio instead of just adding one marker. In Edit Audio dialog I only have markers of type "Wait for user" and "Go to slide".

    This is an issue with my code. I was selectively serializing a class member and relying on EOFException to detect if the class member should be initialized during readExternal(). Following shows the situation:
    public class A implements ExternalizableLite{
         private A1 a1 = null; // A1 is ExternalizableLite
         private A2 a2 = null; // A2 is ExternalizableLite
         public A(){}
         public void setA1(A1 a1){ this.a1 = a1; }
         public void readExternal(DataInput in) throws IOException {
             this.a1.readExternal(in);
             this.a2 = new A2();
             try{
                 this.a2.readExternal(in);
             catch(EOFException ex){ // a2 is null
                 this.a2 = null;
        public void writeExternal(DataOutput out) throws IOException {
            this.a1.writeExternal(out);
            if(this.a2 != null) this.a2.writeExternal(out);
    }A map had the above class A as the value and when the map was getting serialized, I was getting the exception. I changed class A (as below) to always initialize a2 to a non-null but empty class and the error went away:
    public class A implements ExternalizableLite{
         private A1 a1 = null; // A1 is ExternalizableLite
         private A2 a2 = new A2();
         public A(){}
         public void setA1(A1 a1){ this.a1 = a1; }
         public void readExternal(DataInput in) throws IOException {
             this.a1.readExternal(in);
             this.a2.readExternal(in);
        public void writeExternal(DataOutput out) throws IOException {
            this.a1.writeExternal(out);
            this.a2.writeExternal(out);
    }This means needless serialization/deserialization when a2 is null but the hit is negligible. Is there a way to get around the null values?
    Thanks

  • Is there Mac software for repairing corrupted pdf files?

    Using Mac 10.5.8, Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.3.2.
    Many of my pdf files are encrypted on a sparsebundle disk image, as they are personal financial files.
    Randomly files become corrupted, and even though I back up, it is a recurring and very time-consuming problem.
    It's basically the only problem I have with my system, and because of the importance of the files very frustrating.
    There are PC-based file repair programs. I've come across references to a command-line program, but hey, I'm a Mac user, right?
    Is there anything?
    And while we're at it, what can I do to prevent files from becoming corrupted? These are files from my scanner, not downloaded.
    Thanks

    See this list for Cameras that are compatiblie with iMovie. Almost all Sony cameras made in the last 5 years work with iMovie, so odds are high that your camera will work. The only exception is that some manufacturers have started providing 60P cameras. These cannot be used at 60P in iMovie (or on a TV set for that matter). But these cameras typically have other settings like 30P or 60i that work fine.
    The bundled software with the Sony is Windows software. They do not bundle Mac software with Sonys because iMovie comes with every Mac anyway, and that is all you need.
    I think your camera works with an SDHC card. You can easily insert the SDHC card into a card reader and import the footage. New iMacs have card readers built into the side. In iMovie, you just start iMovie. Then insert the card and wait for iMovie to see it. Or you can click the camera icon on the middle toolbar if it does not see it.
    You can also attach your camera via USB. In this case, the camera must be plugged into wall power, and you attach via a USB cable.
    Follow the instructions in the manual for how to set the controls of the camera during import.
    Edited to add...You need a Mac with at least an Intel Processor to import from this camera. Older PowerPC models (G5, G4) will not work. Even with them you can get third party software to convert to a form iMovie can handle.

  • Embedded JPEG Extended images corrupted in Reader X, but not 9.4

    Hi,
    We're experiencing an issue where JPEG images embedded in PDFs display properly with Reader 9.4.2 and with third-party readers such as FoxIt, but experience color corruption when displayed with Reader 10.0.1.  Adjusting display settings has not helped.
    This only affects JPEG Extended images, i.e. non-progressive with a 16-bit quantization table, which quite a few pieces of software will produce at low quality settings.  JPEGs with 8-bit quantization tables, i.e. basically everything saved at higher quality levels, are not affected.
    I can provide a sample PDF if needed.
    Screenshot of the problematic PDF below.  The two images should look the same (though at different scales).  The first is a JPEG Extended image that displays properly in other PDF viewers and in 9.4.2, the second is the same image resaved at a higher quality level, and is what the first one should look like.
    Please advise on potential workarounds, or if this is a known issue.

    Have you tried with Reader X protected mode "OFF" ?

  • How can I repair jpeg files that seem to be damaged in my iPad?

    Hello everyone. I have an iPad 1 where I put some pictures using a PC and that were not sync by iTunes. Hope that makes sense, I did't use the iTunes rather just drop the folder with the pics in the iPad using a PC (like pretty much an external drive), I was able to see the pictures in my iPad without problems, even as I created the albums. Then my laptop was stolen and I lost all the original files. I want to recover those pictures but when I connect the iPad to my iMac it doesn't recognize the files by iTunes or iPhoto (only the ones that are in the camera roll, those saved from emails on the iPad)
    I downloaded two different programs to try to import the pictures to my iMac and I can see the files but then I realized that those files are empty. The thumbnails show the images kindy of blurry but when I copy the files and try to open them it says is empty. In the iPad the pictures now appeared to be also blurry, this did not happened before, I saw the pictures last week and were perfect, I'm assuming that in the process of trying to find a program to extract the pictures the files were damaged somehow.
    Please tell me there's a way I can repair those files! I have around 3000 pictures that otherwise are lost forever.
    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks for your reply. The pictures are blurry on the iPad too, if I try to email them from there the email shows the attached file as a question mark (?). I already try to take out the files with a PC without iTunes and I can't see the files there either. I only found the files with those two programs but the also appeared as empty files.
    The question is if I can repair those files. Thanks a million.
