No need to install software, just use any of the hard buttons to turn your device on and let it power off automatically. About the only time I use the power button is to relaunch an ebook if the auto power off has taken effect. My #1 TX will be three years old next month and the power button has just as much bounce in it as it did the first week.

Even with the Ringer Switch off, I still want some alerts and alarms to make noises, and not just vibrate.
It used to be that setting a Reminder could cause a Sound-Alert with the ringer switched off, but this is been "fixed" (broken) in iOS 6, I think.
Only Timer alarms can make sounds (via the speaker) with the ringer switched off, as far as I can tell, although Music and some other Non-Alarm apps can make sounds, somehow. I have heard no good explanation of how this is achieved.
What options do I have in which categories?

Yes, I said that a couple of times, athough Ringer switch ON and OFF have unspecified senses, as I noted, so I said "Sound Enabled" to clarify.
I have been giving feedback to Apple for 27 yrs now, 100s of them, with not a single one acknowledged or implemented. Much better chatting here, and similar sites.
Since we cannot control Apple (Ha!) or encourage or affect them, it seems the switch must not be used to disable alerts and sounds, but to leave that to smarter software.
The "Do Not Disturb" switch is getting closer, but needs much much more flexibility, including for example, Sounds when email arrives from a specific person (like the ring-twice, and Allow Calls from Favourites, which I would NEVER do.)
An Allow-Calls from these numbers (list: x, y, z) would be nice, as Favourites includes people I would never want to interrupt me.
Perhaps Do Not Disturb by a 3rd party? Anyone know of such a thing?

When I click on a link in an email, the comoputer locks p and the screen goes black, requiring a shut down from the on-off switch. My version of Firefox is up-to-date.

The on-off switch is the only way I can turn off the computer, because the screen is black. Then I turn on the computer again to reboot, and when I click on Firefox again it takes from 30 to 90 seconds before Firefox opens, at which point I get a message asking if I want to begin a new session. Then I open emails and don't click on any links. If I check my email using Internet Explorer, the problem does not occur. Your help would be appreciated. Fred...thanks, but this is not about one site. The same thing happens often, with many sites, when i click a link that has come up in Google search, or on Twitter or Facebook or within a story I'm reading. The link takes me to the url of what it was supposed to take me too, then within a second or so it switches to that Yahoo 'error handler' url, a page that offers search for similar sites.

Just installed iOS5 and iCloud on iPod Touch, and in Settings, I can't get the on/off switch to stay on for Automatic Downloads.

I just installed iOS5 and iCloud on 4th gen iPod Touch. All is well EXCEPT that I can't get the on/off switch in "Settings" to stay on for automatic downloads of music and apps. Has anyone else had this problem? Am I missing some previous set-up step?

to enable icloud you tap "settings" -> "icloud". Make sure you sign in with a valid iCloud Apple-ID. Then you can turn on the various features that are part of iCloud.
Video or Music Syncing is not a feature of it. Instead you use itunes in the cloud which let's you re-download purchases. This however depends if the service is available in your country.
Worldwide only purchased books and apps are supported for free-of-charge-redownload on your devices.

I don't mean to be rude or anything but did you check to see if it's on hold? I had the same problem, I nearly worked myself to tears trying to figure out why it wouldn't turn off! hope you fix you're problem.
P.S.-Maybe you should just let the batery run out till it goes dead, hey, then it will be off right?

Out of the 100+ millions of iPhone, I'm sure there are many people that have that same problem. If you do, you have a 1 year warranty... take it in before it runs out.

Replacing my on/off switch for my Mac Pro 2008

I have been trying to find online a DIY site to help me insure I take my Mac Pro apart correctly so my expensive computer isnt trashed! LOL Seriously, I am good with my hands but will need some idea of getting to my on/off switch and replace it.

So the only troubleshooting you have done is powered the phone off/on and done a reset? The next step in troubleshooting is to restore the phone from a backup, and if that does not work, then restore as new. Then you test the device without putting any additional content on it, and if it works, then try restoring your backup. If the phone fails again, then restore as new again and sync your content back individually, not using your backup. If restoring as new does not work, then there is a hardware fault with the phone. Make a Genius Bar appointment.

Has anybody experienced the iPhone off switch not working all the time.

I have an iPhone 5, it's about 16 months old and it has experienced an annoying issue. The off button does not work all the time, sometimes I have to press it multiple times and other times it just works. The worst case is when it does not work at all, very frustrating. I didn't expect this type of issue for a phone that is not even a year and a half old.
I did some searching on the internet and there are 2 schools of thought, the first is that this is a hardware fault and Apple know about it but won't admit it because it would cost them too much to repair/replace phones with the issue. The second school of thought is that it is a software issue and a backup/reset/restore will fix it; I tried doing this but it did not resolve the issue.
Further digging seemed to suggest that it was really a hardware fault and the only option was to get a refurb from Apple for a ton of money, not cool.
Anyway, if anyone has any more information that could help me resolve this issue I would greatly appreciate it.

@diesel vdub, thanks for your suggestion, I setup an appointment with the Genius Bar and found out in about 5 minutes that everything I have read up on so far is true.
Firstly the technician admitted that there is a sporadic fault on the iPhone 4s and iPhone 5 switches, something to do with the design of the switch that included a rubber element that rolls up (whatever that means) and causes the switch to fail. He then indicated that the iPhone 5s does not have the issue because the switch has been completely redesigned.
Since I was stupid enough to not take out the extended warranty the only options he gave me were to purchase a new phone or to get a refurb for $269, not cool. Why would anyone think that a phone would not work correctly for 2 whole years when the phone only cost about $600!
Since I have about 7-8 months left on my phone contract I am not prepared to pay for either option. I find it amazing that a phone can develop this type of issue in such a short time and then expect the customer to pay for their failures. Apple supposedly sells a very high quality product for a very high price, looks like they have taken a step back from this philosophy.
I am disappointed in the options that he gave me (I don't blame the technician) but I suppose I expected more from Apple in terms of quality and service.

Will I still be able to use FCP to finish current project if I purchase the 40% off switch to cloud?

Apologies if this is a silly question, but I haven't been able to find what happens to the use of FCP when using adobe's switch dicsount to subscribe to cloud. I have a project I'm currently working on in FCP but want to purchase a subscription to cloud using the discount so that I can start using their programs. Just wanting to know if I were to purchase subscription today would it kill FCP for me?

Adobe's Creative Cloud will have no effect on your FCP install.

I changed a few settings and now cant get the iPad to shut off with the shut off switch and can't back to the settings icon to change it back. Any ideas?

Have you tried resetting your iPad?
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10-15 seconds).

My laptop becomes extremely hot in the top left hand corner of the keyboard under the on/off switch.

The underside of the laptop becomes very hot soon after start up and does not cool down while in use. This makes it impossible to use as a 'laptop'. I am concerned that it is also causing damage.

How to use on/off switch with the cover on?

Ive only just got my IPAD so it may well be me but why is the on/off switch 'under' the cover. Surely, I dont have to take the cover off everytime I want to switch it on and off? Or should I not switch it on and off and just use the cover to put in 'standby' mode?

Unless you will not be using the iPad for a long time, you do not need to switch it OFF, just use the magic cover to put it to sleep (standby).
BTW, the ON/OFF switch is at the top, not the Home button at front.

IBook G4 on/off switch soldered connector

I recently installed a new hard drive. While replacing the hard drive I pulled the wires that lead from the on/off switch to the connector that's soldered to a board completely off. Now the wires aren't connected and my computer won't power up. I spoke with a service person and was told that they wouldn't re-solder the connector and that the whole board needs to be replaced. Can anyone tell me what this board is called and about how much it would cost to replace this board. Also is it possible to have the connector re-soldered? Where can I purchase a new board if this is the only option?

This does happen sometimes, and I believe the leads can be resoldered. However, it does require a specialist and special equipment. The only one I know of for sure is Superior Reball:

I don't know of anybody close to you but maybe someone else does. You would have to talk very clearly to them about just where the leads came out and what you would need to send to them. From your description, I'm not entirely sure where the leads came apart--it sounds like you may have pulled the connector off of the logic board, but I am not sure of this. If so, you would need to send in the logic board and the connector. You really don't want to have to replace the logic board because of this--that would be far more expensive than sending it off for repair.
