Software Update affecting External Drive?

Last night I did the following update:
2010-09-14 20:32:10 -0500: Installed "Security Update 2010-005" (1.0)
2010-09-14 20:33:31 -0500: Installed "iTunes" (10)
2010-09-14 20:34:49 -0500: Installed "Safari" (5.0.2)
Now my Western Digital 1TB My Book isn't recognized. The two lights on the front just keep flashing. It worked fine before the update. Are the two related? Any ideas on a fix? Thanks!

Aside from my main drive(Mac HD) I have four bootable drives, two Tiger OS and two Leopard OS. Immediately following the Update none of these drives would boot up. I still have a couple of things to try, but I feel that I'll probably have reinstall the Leopard OS on one of the drives and then clone backwards. Luckily, after some persuasion, the main drive seems to be working fine, so I'm still in business. These drives are an integral part of my business and I have to find a solution, but haven't been able to do so yet. I may do another clone of my main drive and try that soon.
All of the drives are readable and writable but simply will not boot up. Therefore, I would definitely agree that the Update was probably the cause of your drive problems. When I first checked in a couple of weeks ago concerning this issue I found another 5 posts dealing with virtually the same problems and all related to the Update.
Sorry I can't offer any fixes yet, but just wanted you to know you're not alone. Wouldn't it be nice if Apple would pay some attention and fix this issue? Pipe dreams I suppose!

  • Install software on an external drive?

    Hi!
I just got my new MacBook. But, it is full of software from school, since I'm doing desing, movies and that kind of stuff. Almost no space left.
So I was thinking of buying an external hard drive.
    - Is it posible to install and run software on an external drive?
    - If yes, will it be files and settings on my mac after deleting programs from the external?
    - Is an USB(2) OK? or do I have to buy one with firewire?
    - Filesystem, is it right that I have to format the external drive to a mac partition?
Is there any disadvantage of running on an external drive?
    Thanks!

Welcome to the discussions and congrats on your new MacBook. You'll love it.
Yes, you can run software from an external drive.
I'm not sure I understand the second question, but there will be some settings and files that will end up on the main drive but depending on what software you're installing, it is not likely to be much.
USB 2.0 is fine. I have a USB 2 and Firewire external drives and both work fine. Firewire has faster sustained transfer speeds, USB 2 has faster initial transfer. If you plan on doing video work, you'll probably want to find a Firewire drive.
You don't HAVE to reformat the drive to Mac as the Mac will read PC formatting, but I think you'll have better stability if you initially format it as a Mac drive. Just use Disk Utility (\Applications\Utilities\Disk Utility) to format the drive.
I don't know of any disadvantage other than you won't be able to run the software unless you're connected to the drive, so you'll have to carry the external drive around with you.
There are probably some things you can do to free up some hard drive space too- get rid of the MS Office Test Drive, iWork '06 30 Day Trial, Garageband Demo Songs (\Library\Applications Support\GarageBand\GarageBand Demo Songs), Remove printer drivers you don't need (\Library\Printers), etc.
    Hope this helps.

  • 10.8.5 Supplemental Update causing external drive error?

I'm seeing a lot of discussion about 10.8.5 having a bug that caused some external drives to eject improperly. I have never had this issue, but just did the software update -- which *I believe* was the 10.8.5 Supplemental Update, because I remember it saying this:
"Fixes an issue that may cause external drives to be ejected after the computer goes to sleep"
... and now I AM getting that error message sometimes after my computer is woken from sleep! So, for me, the Supplemental Update caused the problem that others had been having, but that I'd never had, with the previous update!
I'm assuming I'm fully up to date with my software updates because, when I check, there are no updates to be found.
It's frustrating because I never had this issue, and the update that was supposed to fix it for everyone else, cause it to start happening to me.
Any help or thoughts on this would be appreciated!

    Try running the combo update.

  • HELP!! Software to backup external drive to external drive

    HI,
We're a small video production company and we're using RAID 0 external drives to do our editing on (for speed). I need to back this work up (ASAP!). I'd like to back the work up onto another external drive (SATA II drives), but it is difficult to do this daily if I don't have some software which will know what folders have been changed and what the new work is.
Is there anything out there that can do this (free ware would be good-but not essential)?
I'm working on a mac book pro and there just isn't enough space on it to use it to edit on, otherwise I would use the timemachine to backup to external drive.
    Hope you can help!!!

    Let me chime in again:
    - for an OS X only solution, you can use Apple Disk Utility System Restore to copy one volume to another volume. Built-in to OS X, no other software needed. Only downside is that it is always a complete copy each time it is performed. So if updating a previously made backup, all the files and folders will be copied again.
    - when using SilverKeeper and you have issues or problems, I suggest you send an email to [email protected] I can assure you that you will get a detailed answer since I answer all those emails. It too will make volume backups for directly connected drives. There are limitations when using shared drives over a network. SilverKeeper will make a backup by copying all the files and folders the first time it is used; subsequent backups will update only the new or changed files.
    - CCC is also a good solution for making volume backups for any connected drive.
    - SuperDuper is also a good solution. The free version will make volume backups; the paid version will perform a smart backup when updating previously made backups. The smart update feature will update the new or changed files.
There are many, many soulitons out there that work quite well. When someone has a problem where a backup cannot be completed it may be due to a problem woth the Source drive - if there are read errors, or disk corruption, a backup may not be successful.
Finally, when making a backup, it is wise to not be using any of the files on the Source or Destination drive. This will surely lead to a problem with a backup, as open files cannot be backed up. If making a backup of your system drive, it also is wise to not be using your computer and make sure other applications are closed so no files are in use.

  • Software Update and Hard Drive Space Driving me crazy...

    Evening,
I have been experiencing this issue for a long time and I don't know what to do. Ever since February 14, 2011 (a SL reinstall) my MacBook Pro for some reason is not recovering the HDD space after Software Update downloads are completed. Before updating Safari and applying the security update my HDD space was 381.79GB, when the update files were downloaded before reinstalling the space went down to 381.72. When the updates were installed and the system rebooted, I expected that the HDD space would have increased but it remained at 372.72GB. I know is not that much of HDD however, I remember that before the HDD space would increase after a software update was applied since SU would delete the installer packages. I have tried 3 full reinstalls with zero out option and unfortunately the problem is still there. Do you think I have a software problem? or hardware problem?
    Thank You!

Forgot to post: I don't know what is causing the problem, could it be a damaged drive or other hardware or is it a software problem? I have tried the following:
Reinstalled OSX more than 3 times each with Zero Out option activated and the problem keeps resurfacing...
    Repaired Permissions
Repaired the drive with OSX Install disc
deleted caches, plist both in finder and SU
    Safeboot
    Things to still try out:
Reinstall OSX with Zero Out option but with another install disc (I got a replacement from apple care).
and the final one throw my MBP out the window...
Last one is just a joke but I am lost on this issue that has persisted everytime since February 14...

  • After latest OS update, My External drive doesn't work

    Hi everyone,
I purchased an Arcdisk 4gb usb drive (http://www.archos.com/products/storage/arcdisk4/index.html?country=global&lang=e n). It was working fine on both my PC and Mac until last week. Last week, after i installed the latest software updates from Apple, my mac no longer picks up the arcdisk. However the arcdisk still works fine on my PC. I emailed Archos and their responce was that Apple should have some solution to my problem ~sigh~.
I'd appreciate any suggestions! Otherwise I'm feeling really stupid for having spent $150 on the thing.
    Thanks in advance,
    Terry

  • Software Updates Corrupted Hard Drive?

    Hi,
Last night I allowed Software Update to install the new security update 2008-007 as well as HP printer drivers when I was shutting down. This morning, upon booting my computer, Mac OS X would not start. I held down option and noticed the only drive available was my Windows partition (which recently stopped working as well). I booted up the Leopard install DVD and tried repairing the partition with Disk Utility but I get an error saying something about an invalid boot sector. Should I say goodbye to my data? Anyone have any tips? Thanks.

Never apply more than one update at a time, especially if one or more requires your password to install.
Did you run the disk utility before installing the updates? It's never good to install any update if the HD or permissions are in need of repair.
See if you can boot into the Safe mode (hold down shift key on boot) and at the login screen, click restart and let computer boot normally.
Since you say you had a problem previously with Windows, I suspect your HD needs attention and the update simply attempted to install on a corrupted HD and failed. It's rarely the update but the HD or some other system issue prior to installing the update.
Do you have any AV programs in your Windows partition? Some will corrupt your boot sector and prevent OS-X from booting. It's a common issue with AV program on computers using BootCamp.
You may need some more power medicine than DU. I suggest DiskWarrior which can restore an unbootable corrupt HD.
When Windows stopped working that was your cue to fix the system before installing any updates or other software.

  • Updating Two External Drives

I'll hopefully be brief and clear. I have two external hard drives. My home drive and work drive both have iTunes libraries. I sometimes buy or burn music on the home drive and bring the drive to work so I can update it with the new music. How can I update the work drive with the new music without having to recopy and paste the entire library?

Were these old Time Machine backups? If so, those are hideously complex in structure, and will take a very long time to delete.... especially if you made the mistake of doing a secure empty, which was not necessary in this situation and will only slow the process down far more. Just wait until it finishes, but be aware that it will take a while.
As for why the system slows down when those drives are connected, that's hard to say. Could be a hardware issue with one of those drives.

  • Software update v2.4 driver printers and scanners EPSON fpr Mac OS X v10.6

Installing this update (2.4) Epson Perfection 1650 Scanners stop working.

    Floatpod,
Exactly the same problem. Any luck since then?
I can scan with Epson scanner software, but can not with Image capture.
    So annoying
Yes, I had some help from an excellent person at Apple. We uninstalled the update from Apple (which was provided to Apple by Epson), and I have chosen for my software update to "ignore" the update from now on to avoid future problems. I will also not download the update from Epson. I downloaded and ran the uninstaller "EPSON Scan Uninstaller v1.00" for the latest update from the Epson website as well, as per the advice from the Apple rep. ( http://www.epson.ca/cgi-bin/ceStore/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid =14551&prodoid=6464130&infoType=Downloads&platform=Macintosh ). I reinstalled the original applications -- only -- from my Snow Leopard disk. I'm so sorry that I cannot be more detailed or specific, however, I am completely technically illiterate, and am fuzzy on exactly what he had me do at this point.
I couldn't be happier, as Image Capture and my scanner are working perfectly now.

  • June 9 Software Update affects Apple Display

After rebooting from the recent apple software update, the power button on my Apple display remained flashing. The morse code implied something to do with an error in my video card or display connection.
Since I had a motherboard replaced 4 years ago, I have had sporadic display blackouts. I haven't had one for 2 years, all has been fine.
To fix the current display problem, I unplugged the video card, waved my hand over it and said nice things to it, plugged it back in and the display is now working properly, no flashing button and it is considerably brighter.
The card is a ATI Radeon 9600 Pro which is getting hard to find. I don't know if my problem is the card or the plugin socket but the effort has worked once again.

    Hi Topsfield
If I was you I would get a better card . I use the nvidia GeForce 6800GT DDL . Its a great video card but the price is a bit much for it , but it rock with graphics from it . I am powering a dell 30 in screen fine and the color is great . I had the ATI 9600 but I could not run a 30 in screen on my computer . I got mine from ebay and it cost me 250.00 dollars or so .I dont remember the price but thats about it .The card you have its ok but if you want to see some real graphics like in games and other apps .
thats just my two cents about video cards .

  • Apple Software Update doesn't see connected HP printer. Need new driver

I recently installed OS X 10.7 Lion on my MBP, from Mountain Lion. I am working at a remote location and for a while and want to connect to a nearby HP LJ1320 (USB-only) printer. When I connected it, System Preferences detected it, listed the desired driver as "LJ 1320 series" and started a "Finding software" routine. It stopped and said software not found.  When I went to support area of HP site, the offered no direct download link for 10.6-8, but instead steered me to ASU (Apple Software Update) as my driver solution. When I run ASU, I don't get any listing for updated printer drivers, HP or otherwise. I'm lost in an endless do-loop here that leads nowhere. Should I be looking at some open-source driver instead?

Typically that requires a special patch, but those are only provided to certain printers.  I know what's keeping you from being able to install though.  The database on your Mac that tells it what is and isn't compatible is out of date.  What you will need to do is:
Disconnect the printer from the Mac.
    Run Apple Software Updates.
    Restart the Mac.
Once the Mac is back on, connect the printer to it, and add the printer's queue to the list.
That should be all that needs to be done.  Let me know what happens.
I am a printer tech for HP.

  • Running games and apps on an external drive?

I have a macbook pro with windows 7 using bootcamp and the hard drive partition is filling up. I can't really assign it any more space on the boot drive because I need it for what's running on the osx partition.
Is it possible to put some games or software on an external drive rather than on the boot drive and run them from there in order to save space on the boot drive?
I would use a 7200 rpm drive with a firewire 800 connection. Would this affect the performance of the games?
    Thanks for any advice.

    Hi Luis,
theat really depends on the games/apps you run.
During installation of these games/apps you might or might not get the oportunity to change the destination folder of where to install the game/app.
Some allow it to install them to a different folder/harddisk and some don't.
But there usually it still some parts that have to be installed on the Windows system partition (c:).
Also depending on the games/apps you might be able to move them after installation but most likely this will only work for a very few of them.
When using the external harddisk you might experience a slight decrease in speed, especially when large parts have to be read from that external HD, but it should be acceptable.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Possible to install CS5 on an external drive?

    Hi all,
I'm new to adobe products so I apologize if this is a common question; I tried my best to search the forums for an answer. I recently bought CS5 to use on my 2007 Macbook (snow leopard) for personal use, just to keep my skills current. I wouldn't be using the software that often and I'm worried it'll slow up my computer too much if I keep it on here permanently. I only have about 28 gb free. Is it possible to install and store the software on an external drive?
I see in the tech specs it can't be installed on a flash drive, but is there a way to install it on the laptop and then move it to a drive? If so, how big does the drive need to be? (I'd want something relatively portable) Are there any other problems that could arise from this? Thanks so much.
    Emma

    Several points:
Computers don't get slow because of a lack of hard drive space, unless there is very very little left (let's say under 1GB). You may be thinking of RAM (memory), where the more programs that are running simultaneously, the more difficult it is for the running ones to allocate memory and they may page between RAM and disk (virtual memory), which is slow.
You can install Creative Suite 5 on your hard drive and move it. Most of the Adobe programs will happily detect that they have been moved and update their idea of where they live. I think you will find that this causes mild problems for Acrobat, but it just means you get more annoying prompts when you start it up. Still, I would leave it alone.
In CS5.5, the installer lets you choose the location of the install (which Acrobat then ignores...). I can't remember if CS5 lets you choose, but I've moved it after the fact without a problem.
Another issue is that there are a lot of common files that are not installed in the Applications folder. For instance, I have 2.4 GB in /Library/Application Support/Adobe. I would not recommend trying to move these files unless you are familiar and comfortable with symbolic links (ln -s).

  • Can I Sync My Music From My Macbook Pro To An External Drive

I have a MacBook Pro, which has all of my music stored on its hard drive and I play this through iTunes and sync with my iPod.
I am looking for a simple way of synchronizing this with an external hard drive I have so my music is kept up to date and should I add any music to my MacBook it will automatically update the external drive and hopefully this will provide back up in case anything happens.
    Thanks
    Big G

There really is only one way to do this but it's not automatic in the sense you are thinking. Use a utility for syncing folders or any good backup utility such as:
    Suggested Backup Software
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Configure the utility to sync (not backup) the two folders. Then set up a schedule for the sync to occur on a regular basis.
