Everything else seems to work fine I can get to site above in browser. Problem started after attempt to get fink running. Fink complains of connect refused after install

This is pretty basic, but it might help

You could also try to re-install SU, I'm not sure if it is a discrete part of the install package, have a look with Pacifist...

  • Software Update can't connect to server -- error

I have Tiger 10.4.7 on a 600mH white G3 dual USB iBook. When I try to use the SoftwareUpdate function off the Apple Menu to check for any updates to Tiger, the "checking for new software" window starts up all right but immediately the error message window appears with "Software Update can't connect to the update server."
I'm otherwise connected to the internet all right and everything is working. I tried trashing the com.apple.softwareupdate.plist file from the Library/Preferences and the user/Library/Preference/ and restarting, but this didn't do it either.
I've had this problem before and it has "become" fixed, but I don't know exactly what sequence does it. Any help, please?
    PM9600/233 (OS 8.6); G3 white iBook (10.4.7)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

No, I didn't try creating a new user, in part because once before doing that only made things more complicated and didn't solve any problems.
Software Update simply started working again. No idea why.
However, even after several days, Safari is still reporting that it cannot connect to the server for any URL put in. I've restarted Safari, reset Safari, manually emptied all caches, removed cookies. All very odd!
    Firefox is working just fine.

  • Software Update can't connect to the update server.

I have an iMac 8-1 with OS is Mac OS X, version 10.7, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, and 3 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory.
When I try to update software I get this error message:
The file “AppleMobileDeviceSupportDelta.pkg” couldn’t be found on the server “swcdn.apple.com”.
Software Update can’t connect to the update server. Make sure you’re connected to the Internet, and then try again.
I don't know how to "connect to the update server" but I guarantee that I AM connected to the internet!

  • HT1338 Software Update can't connect to the update server. Make sure you're connected to the Internet, and then try again

I have been getting this message on MAC OS 10.6.3  "Software Update can’t connect to the update server. Make sure you’re connected to the Internet, and then try again". Internet is working fine for everything else. Updating to 10.6.8 and applying all the security updates and patches [directly downloading from the apple website] has not resolved the issue. Read somewhere about a software update enabler for 10.6, installed it, but not helping.. [not sure of the update server settings to be entered] .Is there no way to make the software update work from the Apple Start Menu??

Problem solved.. Expired rules in Little Snitch caused the glitch

  • Software Update can't connect to the internet after a new install of 10.6

I had a clean install of 10.6 and after that the Software Update can't connect to the internet (the status bar hangs at the beginning and finally it prompts me the internet is not connected) while all my other applications can.
    Someone help me out?

I am having exactly the same problem as well.. has anybody managed to solve this yet? I have uploaded Snow Leopard - try to connect to Software Update - the menu bar scans a little then stops and then an error saying 'Not connected to the internet'' but the connection is working fine!!
Is this a SL issue? or just an overload with the Software Update programme? I cant do anything - no update for itunes/iphone software, etc.. most annoying.
Look forward to seeing some good news and some answers to this one.
    Cheers

  • Software Update can't connect to the internet

    Hi everyone
My iMac's software update can't seem to find my internet connection. It gives this message after trying to find new updates:
*A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again.*
Software Update can't check for updates because of a network problem.
Then I can click either 'Network Diagnostics' - which always says I'm connected, or 'Quit'
Is there some way I can get Software Update back online so that I don't have to manually download everything from the apple website??

    Hello Sasha:
You can try something easy first. Trash a couple of preference files:
    com.apple.softwareupdate.plist
com.apple.softwareupdate.nnnnnnnn.plist (where nnnnn is a bunch of numbers and letters)
    Restart.

  • Software update can't connect to server

    Hi.
Ok. When I click the software update, it opens but says it can not connect to the server. I run the diagnostics and it says that I can not connect to the skippy.local server.
The last time I went to the apple store, they said that my computer was trying to connect to the stores own network. Supposedly it was fixed, but its not. And now that I'm not near an apple store anymore, i call upon the forums for help. So, can anybody help?

i have the same issue. i have several apples in our network some are displaying this message and some are not. the computers that are displaying this message have nothing wrong with them that i can find, other than this prompt? i have heard that apple is having trouble with the software update server from another it company but that is all i heard. it seems odd that some have this error and some don't. this is very odd.

  • "Software Update Can't Connect to Update Server"

    I am running 10.4.9
For whatever reason, I can no longer update the System using the Software Update function.
    Have done the following:
I have deleted the software update preferences.
I have tried logging in under a newly created account.
I have repaired and verified the disk.
Nothing seems to work. I can otherwise connect to the Internet, and even the Itunes store just fine.
    Any suggestions?
Imac SE DV   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Not sure, but I would try and download and install the update manualy. You can get it
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1052comboupdate.html
Then do your restart and try software update again to see if it works.

  • Safari, iTunes and Software update can't connect, firefox can

    Hi all!
Since upgrading to Leopard I've been unable to get my macbook to connect using Safari, Software Update or iTunes. I get unknown error messages from iTunes and Software Update and a message that the server can't be found or times out from safari.
Strangely Firefox works perfectly and the other Macs on my network (some 10.4, some 10.5) are fine.
I have tried checking the proxy settings and creating an new user account but both times the problem persists.
The only thing I can think it could be is that someone configured proxy settings through firefox a while ago (pre 10.5) when they used it at their office. could that affect safari etc?
    All help gratefully received.
    Adam

Hi. Sorry this will not help, more of an observation. I posted a while back that I was having much the same problem at work when connecting through a proxy. Any Apple app that needs an internet connection did not work, ie Safari, Widgets, Software Update etc. But iChat works, as does Mail although not the RSS function. Firefox on the other hand works fine. I am absolutely certain my setting are correct and when I revert to using my 10.4.10 boot disk that all works fine. I think Apple has some how changed the way user info and password is sent when making a net connection through a proxy and now with 10.5 it does not work.
I also spoke with a mate yesterday he has just upgraded to 10.4.11 which means he now has Safari 3. He now is also experiencing the same problems I have with 10.5 and proxy connections.

  • Safari,  Software Update can't connect to Internet

Small home network. Mac was configured as PPoE. I purchased a LinkSys Router Wireless G router. Configured it so I don't have to enter username and password for internet any more. My windows computers work fine. My Mac connects to the to the internet with Firefox. However, software update, itunes and Safari can't connect. Any thoughts

I am having a similar problem, but only sometimes.
Did anyone ever get back to you on this?
No one got back to me but the problem is fixed. I made a new network connection to work with the router and then every thing was ok.

  • Software Update says Software Update can't connect to the update server.  But I am connected to the internet

But I am connected.  Every thing else works fine. Just the Software Updater.

  • Software update fails on connection interrupt

I have two computers, one an Intel Core i5 runing 10.7.2, and the other a Core i7 running 10.7.3. Software Update hangs on checking for new software, or at the start of downloading. The problem seems like it may be related to Airport WiFi. I've noticed that at somewhat random timing, when Software Update is run, the Internet connection on both my DSL modem, and the AirPort Base Station network is dropped, and then comes back in a minute or two. The hang or failure to fetch files follows this interupt. Connection is solid at all other times. (I run connection timing on the menu bar). This is what I get from System.log on the Console:
    Marker - May 3, 2012 6:15:05 PM

May  3 18:16:15 Gregs-MacBook-Pro Software Update[6626]: Layout still needs update after calling -[WebHTMLView layout].  WebHTMLView or one of its superclasses may have overridden -layout without calling super. Or, something may have dirtied layout in the middle of updating it.  Both are programming errors in Cocoa Autolayout.  The former is pretty likely to arise if some pre-Cocoa Autolayout class had a method called layout, but it should be fixed.

    May  3 18:19:45 Gregs-MacBook-Pro installd[6631]: Exiting.
I get an error dialoge that says:
"Software Update can’t connect to the update server. Make sure you’re connected to the Internet, and then try again."
Now if I recall correctly that both my modem and AirPort Extreme base station are about 4 years old now, and I would consider replacing them, but I have heard rumors that Apple is having problems on the Server end for delivering updates.
    Advice?

Mine is doing the same thing. Also having issues with it connecting to my time capsule correctly. I have tried running disk utilities and also restarting the computer and zapping the p-RAM. If I can't get updates how will I be able to download the Lion update that fixes the bug?? Ugh.

  • Software Update can't download; Safari can't connect to apple (tough!)

    hello -
I posted this topic in Safari but it may really be more of a networking question. I have two problems which are specific to one user account on my Tiger machine.
    1) Safari can't connect to anything from Apple.com
    2) Software Update can download lists of updates, but the downloads of the updates themselves never begin (hangs at 0 B of 31 MB, etc.)
Firefox is fine on apple sites from this account, and neither problem is present when I login to a different account.
Here are some things I've tried with no luck:
    -trash com.apple.softwareupdate.plist
-move all plists out of Preferences and restart Safari
-move Safari folder out of ~/Library and restart Safari
-move everything out of ~/Library which is not present in
the working user account and restart Safari
-reinstall Safari from Tiger disc using Pacifist
I ran a port scan in Network Utility and this is what I get:
    Port Scan has started ...
    Port Scanning host: 192.168.100.54
    Open TCP Port: 21 ftp
    Open TCP Port: 22 ssh
    Open TCP Port: 139 netbios-ssn
    Open TCP Port: 427 svrloc
    Open TCP Port: 445 microsoft-ds
    Open TCP Port: 548 afpovertcp
    Open TCP Port: 5900
    Port Scan has completed ...
Is it weird that port 80 does not appear? Still, I get the same result from the working user's account so it's hard to imagine this is the case. I don't have the OS X firewall on.
I am really stumped by this problem and would love some help!
    thanks,
    Gene

curious and curiouser! Your suggestion to Reset Safari was a great one - thanks! Resetting Safari allows access to the apple websites again. There's no new software to download from SWUpdate right now, so I can't test that, but I will test as soon as I can.
here's the weird thing though. Attempting to login to these discussion forums using Safari brings the problem back again! I type in my login info and it hangs forever while trying to load discussions.apple.com/login.jspa. Once this has happened, then I'm once again unable to load anything under apple.com in Safari, until I Reset. I thought maybe this was a Java problem so I reinstalled the latest Java, but this doesn't help. Still no problem here in Firefox.
    any thoughts!

  • Software updater fails to connect to server. How can I fix?

Software updater fails tp connect with the server. I have tried a restart and checked network connections and internet access. I have no problems connecting to internet, App Store and iTunes Store. Help!

If you know what downloads to look for you get them from support.apple.com.  For example the 10.6.8 combo update v1.1 can be found here.
The probelm is knowing what to look for and that's why softwere update comes in handy even if you don't want to have it do the downloads.  What's probably going on was that the servers looked by software update were either temporarily down, or as mentioned above, overloaded.  Wait a while and try it again.
