Software Update can't find server, but internet connection is good

The Software Update function does not work - "Can't connect to Update Server", and Safari will not load any pages - "CAn't connect to server...". However, Network Diagnostics says that I am connected to the internet, as does Firefox - it loads pages just fine! All other computers in our home network, including my G5 Tower, are performing and access the internet just fine.
Also, for the past 24 hours, whenever I try to reply to an e-mail, or create a new one, mail suddenly crashed. It is very reliable in this way; there are no exceptions! The the newest update/change to my configuration was the update of the 10.4.4 system stuff from Apple, followed a few days later by an update for the 15 in G4 Powerbook battery management.
G4 Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I have had this problem ever since upgrading from Panther 10.3.9 to Tiger back in December. It doesn't matter, 10.4 from the DVD, or 10.4.4 upgrade, the problem is the same: Any Apple-based programs don't recognize the connection.
1) Safari says can't connect to any server.
2) Software Update says there's no internet connection.
3) iTunes won't get CD title information from CCDB because it doesn't recognize an internet connection.
4) E-mail messages that have images linked to websites just show question marks.
5) Widgets that require an internet connection (weather, etc.) are blank.
I, too, did all the tests with the Apple system and pings and all that, which all showed the internet connection to be fine.
In this condition, I can use Firefox and Netscape browsers (I'm using Firefox to write this), but not Safari, Shiira, or Internet Explorer--those three don't recognize an internet connection.
When I first upgraded to Tiger, Mail would receive messages but wouldn't send them. After going back and forth between Apple Care and Earthlink, finally it got solved by Earthlink having me change all my settings. So now I can send messages, but still can't see linked images.
Now here's an interesting quirk. I have four user logins on my computer. On one of them, Safari's home page has always been our login for our online banking. For some reason, that always connects. I have figured out over the past weeks that if I go to that login first, and log in to my bank's website FIRST, then I can use the Apple programs on my other logins (iTunes, Software Update, Safari, etc.). Go figure.
I've spent hours on the phone with Apple Care with this problem. They claim they've never heard of this issue from anyone else, but I've seen several people post on this discussion board having the same issue. Apple Care still has not been able to resolve this issue, even after many hours on the phone with them.

  • N95 Nokia Software Updater can't find phone, but P...

    Hi,
The Lastest version of Nokia Software Updater can't find my phone(connected via USB). But Nokia PC Suite connects to my phone. Very weird.
I'm running windows vista business, Dell Laptop.
I have checked(using product code:0548763), and my N95 Firmware can be upgraded to v12.#, currently firmware is v11.#
I have disabled my windows firewall, and unistalled my McAffee anti-virus.
I think the issue might be with vista, because i successfully upgraded my phone on windows XP from v10.# to v11.#
But then PC Suite shouldn't work, on vista? I tried adding NSU to data execution protection exclusion list.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks

  • 5800: Software updater can't find phone

So yeah, the Nokia Software Updater can't find my phone, and the "in-phone" updater gives me an Connection Error. Nokia PC Suite detects my phone just fine, although the Connection Center doesn't.
I'm connecting through a USB directly to the computer.
Any tips? I've updated everything, from drivers to software, and also reinstalled everything twice already. I'm just out of solutions.

If you've the latest firmware version, you have to wait till a new update comes available for your device.

  • How to redirect the clients software updates to the same server but different IP?

    Hello Everyone,
Well our Mac expert left the company and I got promoted to take his place. I only have about 7 months experience in the Mac world and I have about 90 Macs in the company. Anyways, our company moved into a new building and the Mac server was moved which I am sure the IP address changed. The server is up and running now, but the clients cannot see it and are not allowed update their software. I didn't change any paths or settings to the server, so I am guessing it has to do with something of some IP changes. The Network team set the static IP address up for it so I could connect to it with Remote Desktop just fine. Any suggestions to a Mac rookie?
    Thanks

If your clients can't find the software update server (SUS), then either the server changed DNS names and thus your CatalogURL setting is wrong, or the server was moved to a new address and your DNS services were not updated (or the DNS updates haven't propagated through all the caches quite yet).
To see the current DNS setting for the server your.software.update.server.example.com (and replace that intentionally-bogus DNS name with the DNS name for your software updare server), launch Terminal.app (Applications > Utilities) and issue the command:
    dig +short your.software.update.server.example.com
and see if you get the IP address that you expect, or the old IP address, or some other address.
    Software Update CatalogURL
The usual way an OS X client configures the local (target) software update server is via a plist setting:
    $ sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://your.software.update.server.example.com:8088/index.sucatalog
To view the current CatalogURL setting from the plist:
$ sudo defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL
Details of the catalog URL setting needed varies by the version of the OS X Server; the above is for fairly recent servers.  Google or Bing or DDG for the string:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL
for details on this, or check the Apple doc (see below) for details.
    Background / Resources / More
Take the time to download and skim through the 10.6 Apple OS X Server 10.6 manuals (search for Mac OS X Server 10.6 to narrow what's posted); there's a lot of good information in those Apple documents, particularly given that the documentation for the more recent releases of OS X Server have gotten rather thinner.  You'll find additional details of setting up software update services in those 10.6 documents; in the system imaging and software updates manual.
Also see the archives of the Mac Enterprise mailing list for related information and discussions, as well as details on tools such as Reposado.

  • N95 : Nokia Software Updater can't find phone

Please help, my N95 has been nothing other than a source of misery since I got it. I'm trying to update the software in a hope that the phone will stop crashing on a regular basis, but NSU doesn't want anything to do with it.
I'm running Windows 2000 and I've used the Nokia site to get the latest version (1.3.85 en) of NSU. I've connected the phone to the computer, Windows detects the phone as expected, but NSU never does. After a long pause I get the extraordinarily useless message:
    'Unable to find phone
'1 Please check your phone is switched on and connected to your PC and try locating the phone again
'2 Some phone models require that you select the correct connection type from the phone. In such a case, make sure that you have selected the default or PC Suite mode.
'If the problem persists it means Nokia Software Updater does not support your phone model.'
To answer 1 - the phone is on, connected and I've tried several times.
To answer 2 - I've tried all the modes supported by the N95 including PC Suite mode.
The problem persists, the Nokia site tells me that my phone is supported and that an update is available - so the last part is also wrong.
I've uninstalled NSU, restarted the machine and reinstalled - nothing.
Has anyone got any idea what could be wrong? I'm pretty much at breaking point with the N95 and this is doing nothing to improve my opinion of the machine. I want to like the N95, but it's making things hard. Taking it to a Nokia store is not an option, there are none in my area, there is no over-the-air option to do the update, so I *MUST* use NSU if I want a usable phone.
    Thanks in advance.
    Mike.

    Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply, but no luck so far.
My firewall is ZoneAlarm. I switched it off and tried again with the updater - no luck.
I then reinstalled Nokia PC Suite for the N95 *AND* Nokia Software Updater for the N95, restarted Windows (again disabling ZoneAlarm) and tried to reconnect the phone.
Nothing. PC Suite never finds the phone, NSU gives the same useless error message.
Windows DOES see the phone, if I click on the USB Connect/Disconnect icon in the system tray I see:
    Nokia N95 USB Phone Parent
However, the little icon has a yellow warning exclamation mark on it which is usually a sign of trouble. Clicking [Properties] tells me:
    Device type: Wireless Communication Devices
    Manufacturer: Nokia
    Location Nokia N95
    Device status
    This device cannot start
I'm not sure if this is the cause of the problem.
I've tried using various cables, connecting directly to the computer rather than through a hub, USB 1 rather than USB 2, but still no luck.
Is it time to call an exorcist?
    Mike.

  • I did a software update can not find my photos on my ipad

I did a software update on my IPad and now I can't find my photos  What did I do wrong?

    This fixed the problem:
System Preferences > Bluetooth > advanced - put check mark on ALLOW BLUETOOTH DEVICES TO WAKE THIS COMPUTER.  that took care of the problem.
I had unchecked this item awhile back because there were occasions of sleep mode being mysteriously ended (not by me);  that action solved that problem.  If that condition returns I'll probably just live with it.

Could this have something to do with the Software Update error discussed in OS X system board? Various sites are off-limits (Network timeout error) such as E-bay; Microsoft etc. while others work fine.
Tried a full re-install etc but nothing - no non Apple apps, clean 10.4.3; purged, repaired etc etc

  • Safari Can't Find Server But I Have an Internet Connection

Hello and thank you for your help ahead of time,
My current situation is extremely frustrating, especially considering I have a background in computer diagnostics and repairs.
After upgrading to the new Safari 4.0 I have been having random connection outages that last about 5 minutes before the issue repairs itself. What happens is, despite me being connected to the internet and other programs actively downloading files/mail messages, I displays a message that it cannot connect to the server of any site. It is completely random and has nothing to do with my router, it is most defintley something on my mac. It is ubsurdly frustrating because I will click a read link then the message will display and I will have to wait 5 minutes before I can open a webpage. Same thing happens occasionally on FireFox but not nearly as bad as on Safari. All this leads me to beleive it is something with my TCP/IP settings but on a mac i have no idea how to reset those all like I can on a windows.
    So, please help!
    Thanks

    Greetings,
Before I go watch television in ten minutes, have you tried changing your DNS servers to use those from OpenDNS? If not, quit Safari and open System Preferences > Network > Advanced and in the DNS window, enter these two addresses:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
click Apply Now and quit System Preferences.
Restart Safari and test to see if the problem continues. If it does continue, then it could be an issue with your router possibly overheating or needing to be reset by shutting both it and your Mac down for a few minutes, then restarting the router and your Mac.

  • Can't find server when WiFi connected

I have had several incidences where my ipod says I'm connected but Safari says it cant' find the server.
I remember someone saying something about a DNS or something but don't know what to do when this happens.
Can someone tell me step by step what to do when this happens?
    Thanks!

    Hey peeweedyer,
A DNS issue is when the device has a valid IP address and can browse to websites via IP address but not name.
What is the iPod touches IP address? Goto Settings> Wi-Fi> tap the blue (>) to the right of your network.
If the iPod has a 169.254.x.x IP address, there may be another issue.

  • Connected to the internet but browser says 'can't find server'

    Hi,
I have an Apple Airport Extreme and it has been working well for a long time. My husband and I both run our internet connections from it wirelessly. Recently, when we go to connect to the internet, the browser says 'Can't find Server' but the Airport status bar says we are fully connected to the internet with a strong signal. I have no idea what happened or what is going on. The only thing that we have done differently is update the firmware on both our computers, and it seems as if this problem has started around that time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
    April

It might be a good time to perform a complete power recycle of your network components to make sure they are "talking" to each other properly and see if this resolves the problem.
    Please try the following:
o Power-down the modem, AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), and computer(s); wait at least 15 minutes. Order is not critical.
o Power-on the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o Plug-in the AEBS; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s).
Can they access the Internet now?

  • HT1338 Software Update can't connect to the update server. Make sure you're connected to the Internet, and then try again

I have been getting this message on MAC OS 10.6.3  "Software Update can’t connect to the update server. Make sure you’re connected to the Internet, and then try again". Internet is working fine for everything else. Updating to 10.6.8 and applying all the security updates and patches [directly downloading from the apple website] has not resolved the issue. Read somewhere about a software update enabler for 10.6, installed it, but not helping.. [not sure of the update server settings to be entered] .Is there no way to make the software update work from the Apple Start Menu??

Problem solved.. Expired rules in Little Snitch caused the glitch

  • Connected to internet, but can't find server.

I have an 8gb 1.1.4 software. I have a wireless router in my house and I entered the password correctly, it says I am connect in the corner but when I go to Safari it says can not find server.

Exact same issue as my daughter had with her 1G Touch. Tried all suggestions found in this forum since mid-summer, and no luck. She sent it in to Apple for a replacement, and same thing with the new one. She has DSL with a modem/router from her provider and a Linksys wireless G, and her HP laptop connects wirelessly with no problems. We spent an afternoon trying different modem/router and Linksys settings and no help. I finally called her provider and complained that not only was the iPod touch unable to connect, but neither could the PS3, Wii, or Nintendo DS. They immediately OK'd a switch out of her Westell DSL modem/router with a new Zone. Everything now connects with no problems.
This is probably not your solution, but, boy, it sure worked for her.

  • I can't update my ipod. When I check for updates it says "can't connect to server"(despite internet connection being fine). Also, when I try and update software it starts then stops after 2 seconds

I can't update my Ipod. When I check for updates it says "can't connect to server" despite internet connection being fine. When I receive a software update message;I say install and it starts updating then stops after 2 seconds. Help! (It is a 3rd gen IPod touch(I think)). Presumably as a result of this, I have tried to put my library onto my gf's new iPod touch and it just charges it..doesn't download my library onto the touch).

    Update Server
    Try:
    - Powering off and then back on your router.
    - iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
    - Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
    Public DNS — Google Developers
    OpenDNS IP Addresses
    - For one user uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes resolved the problem
    - Try on another computer/network
    - Wait if it is an Apple problem

  • Software Update can't connect to server -- error

I have Tiger 10.4.7 on a 600mH white G3 dual USB iBook. When I try to use the SoftwareUpdate function off the Apple Menu to check for any updates to Tiger, the "checking for new software" window starts up all right but immediately the error message window appears with "Software Update can't connect to the update server."
I'm otherwise connected to the internet all right and everything is working. I tried trashing the com.apple.softwareupdate.plist file from the Library/Preferences and the user/Library/Preference/ and restarting, but this didn't do it either.
I've had this problem before and it has "become" fixed, but I don't know exactly what sequence does it. Any help, please?

No, I didn't try creating a new user, in part because once before doing that only made things more complicated and didn't solve any problems.
Software Update simply started working again. No idea why.
However, even after several days, Safari is still reporting that it cannot connect to the server for any URL put in. I've restarted Safari, reset Safari, manually emptied all caches, removed cookies. All very odd!
    Firefox is working just fine.
