Software Update cannot connect - Browsing works

I recently installed Mac OS 9 on my Titanium PowerBook G4. Since upgrading via Software Update to 9.2.2, Software Update has not been working anymore; it fails with the message "Software Update is not able to connect to the Internet. Please check your configuration and try again."
At the same time, browsing the Internet works perfectly. Does anybody have an idea what the problem may be?
-Michael.

Hi, Michael -
Some things to try -
Make sure that the extensions named Security Library and Security Manager are enabled (checkmarked) in Extensions Manager.
Increase the Preferred memory allocation to 5000 for these items -
• Software Update (System Folder >> Comtrol Panels)
• Software Update Engine (System Folder >> Extensions)
• Installer Engine (System Folder >> Application Support >> Software Update)
Article #TA21666 - Assigning More Memory to an Application
Throw away the file named Software Update Preferences (Syatem Folder >> Preferences). Then restart.
Epson Scanner Monitor, a 3rd-party extension, is known to sometimes interfere with Software Update.
Sometimes selecting the Mac OS Base or Mac OS All set of extensins in Extensions Manager, and then restarting, will get rid of a conflict and allow Software Update to function.

  • Software Update Cannot connect and Safari cannot connect to URLs

I have copied this problem report from the Safari forum in the hope that I may get some additional help here.
This morning I went to the local library and connected to the internet directly using airport to their WAN. So I now know my problem is independent of the weird dial up arrangement I have at home.
Safari still does not open the sites. It gives a message "Cannot open page "x" because it cannot connect to server "X""
When I open Firefox all my sites are working normally. (I also downloaded and installed Firefox 3 this morning)
I have reset Safari but that does not help.
I have even downloaded the latest greatest version of safari (the beta 4) but it exhibits the same problems
When I invoke Software Update it claims I am not connected to the internet. Does this depend on Safari? Is there a preference I can change to make it work through Firefox
When I invoke internet connect diagnostics it says my internet connection is working normally.

    Hi Steve,
    Great clues there!
FF uses it's own Proxy & DNS settings for a couple of things, where Safari & other Apple Apps use System Preferences.
First, Go to System Preferences>Network, Show Airport>Proxies tab, make sure no Proxies are set.
Second, Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Airport Interface...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Then Apply
DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.149.160.49 behind the scenes.
These Servers have been patched to guard against DNS poisoning, and are faster/more reliable than most ISP's DNS Servers.

  • Software Update - Cannot Connect

Some time past (I’ve be very busy...) When Software Update attempts to connect, I get a dialog stating it cannot connect and offers Network Diagnostics, which finds nothing wrong with the network settings. I have no problems with any of my network connections other than Software Update.
In the past it has worked perfectly for me...

Ignore me, Littlesnitch required an update 2.4.2 to work in Lion...

  • Software update cannot connect MacOSX 10.8

Applestore Chapelfield UK replaced my Seagate hard disk under warranty, and installed mountain lion.  On restoring from Time Machine backup everything works (as so far checked except iPhoto which expects an updated version of MacOSX10.8.  I can't get Software Update or App Store to connect to my account although iTunes does, as does the web, email etc etc.
Advice on fixing software update - is there a version conflict?

  • Updated AirPort via Software Update-- cannot connect to internet now.

Hello, my father has been using his Macbook for a few months now and I noticed there were updates he hadn't installed, one updating Airport to 1.2.2. After the update and an intel Firmware update we cannot connect to the internet! Airport tells me that we're connected to the network, however both Firefox and Safari cannot navigate to webpages, nor can iTunes connect to the iTunes music store. Note: we are using a Linksys WRT160N router and we did have the Macbook working flawlessly prior to the update.

    Hi
    Try these two suggestions:
First, go to your Utilities folder>Keychain Access.app. Open the application. In the Keychains menu>Keychain First Aid. Select "repair". If errors appear, rerun until you get a clean pass.
Close the app., then restart computer/Safari and try the connection.
If no go, then reapply the 10.4.10 combined update. Do not use the computer while the installer is running. When complete, "repair permissions" via Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. Sometimes reapplying the combo update corrects file problems in OS X.
If that doesn't work, either the problem is specific to the cable box, or you may need to reinstall OS X.

When installing the new iTunes software, the message : "the older version of apple software update cannot be removed." What should I do? I tried deleting files related through control panel or the manual way, but it doesn't work. Am I missing something?

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install using an iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) downloaded from the Apple Website:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Does it go through properly this time?

  • Software Update cannot identify my Epson Scanner

Update software cannot locate software from the App Store for my Epson Scanner when connected to my MacBook Pro.  I updated my mid 2010 MacBook Pro from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion (Ver.10.8.1 latest).  I follow instructions using software update of connecting my Epson Scanner to the computer and selecting update software from the menu.  The response is "no updates available". Tried it many times. Following the same procedure with my MacBook Air that I upgraded from Lion to Mt Lion, the store provided a new driver for the Epson Perfection 1650 on the first try so the scanner works.  I am also having issues with Office 2011 of not opening certain docs and parts of applicaitons on my MacBook Pro, do not know if the 2 issues are related.

I had the same problem.  I ran permissions repair and restarted.  No more bogus notifications.
    Then...
Sorry,  the problem came back.  I then went to Apple support and downloaded the Epson Update from there.  For some reason the update was not available fron the usual software update but was downloadable from the Apple Support.  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1398
For the last week -- no more annoying pop-ups asking me to update and then not doing anything.  Hope this works for you, too.

  • Trying to re-install itunes error message "the older version of Apple software update cannot be removed" ?

Unable to re-install itunes as error message appears "The Older Version Of Apple Software Update Cannot Be Removed"
Been to control panel and found apple software update but still unable to remove   Help!!

Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try installing iTunes again. Does the install go through properly now?
(If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.)

  • The software update cannot be verified. Please try again later. (15)

    Hello,
I upgraded my Playbook yesterday as the software was released and today I decided to do a security wipe and start fresh. The device rebooted and I followed the prompts, entered a valid WiFi SSID, connected to the WiFi network and when it tries to do a software upgrade (Normal Process) I get the following error message.
The software update cannot be verified. Please try again later. (15)
    Can anyone please help?
    Thanks,

  • Software update cant connect to the internet

I connect to the internet via wifi on my MBP and I can have say firefox connecting to the internet, mail checks fine, itunes store works, but Safari and Mac Software Updater wont connect. Any Ideas?
    Ive tried resetting PRAM,
Tried the network diagnostic, but that says its all fine but a rerun of the updater still no connection.
Tried various signal strengths to the modem.
    check/verify permissions and Hard disk.

I have had this error returned for months... Not just during the holidays. Dozens of other users are having/have been having the same issue. SU starts just fine, gets to about 25 meg (in my case) and times out, returns the error you quoted. Smaller files usually (but not always) come thru ok. A common thread with all the posts I have read seems to be DSL. On a different thread, it was suggested the modem can get out of synch with the server due to line or modem issues such as forgetting to put filter in all phone jacks.
Anyway, I'm going to give SU another go... It probably won't work...

  • Software update cannot find installed App's  in sub-folder

    Hi All,
I have same kind of problem - I created folder called "iLife' 11" and moved there all App's which belong to this package. As soon as I did this Software Update cannot find anything. For example Apple released iPhoto' 11 (9.1.1) update and Software Update did not find it until I moved it back to "Applications".
BTW I have same problem with Adobe App's. Adobe update did not see Photoshop which has been moved to sub-folder.
My question is DO I have any chance to put App's to sub-folder and get them automatically updated by Software update? IF so, what should I do?

All sub-folders located in /Applications/ not in /Users/username/Applications. Actually /Users/username/Applications/ is empty on my mac.
What I trying to have is sub-folder (for example called Photo where I will have all applications for working with images (Photoshop, Nikon Scan, SilverFast and so on) in one locations or iLife' 11.
I took this idea from folder "Utilities" I can put App there and it worked and updated without any problems.
As far as I understand this problem (from Unix point of view) is a PATH problems. Software Update cannot find App in the folder which not listed in PATH.
If I create link (allies) for application in /Applications/ folder it will updated.
