Software Update, `Daily' preference, when?

(I've searched the Tiger forums for '"Software Update" AND daily' and found 29 articles, but none which answer my following questions.)
I have (Check for Software Updates) `Daily' set in my Software Updates preferences. When does the check take place, please? If my Mac is switched off at the time of the check, will it take place immediately I next switch the Mac on (will it catchup)? I find rather too often that when I start 'Software Update' by hand - several minutes after switching the Mac on - it finds software updates to apply. Do I have to leave my Mac on all the time for it to be kept up to date?
How can Software Update work automatically when I am not present to give the Administrator password? (Even if I have left myself logged in, my normal user account deliberately does not have Administrator privileges.) Does Mac OS X put the usual dialogue box up asking for authorisation for an Administrator action, and just wait for me to appear? (If the update is instead applied without my assent, what if a reboot is necessary and I have unsaved documents etc?) I've never seen an automatic update happen, to my knowledge. Shouldn't I be told (by dialogue box) next time I log in, rather than having to look in the list of software updates each time I do so?
I've read the Apple Support article "Mac OS X 10.4 Help - Updating Your Software" and the `Related documents' and they have nothing to say on these matters. See:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh292.html

Hi jamurdie!
I can't tell you the exact time either. However I believe it's related to the starting up of your computer. So for example if you're computer was off for the past few days then Software Update would read it's plist and know that it's time to check...
There really aren't that many updates to be honest if you have everything current. I don't think there's an update once a week and you're not really waiting for critical security updates so much like on a pc. Software update will contact the server to know if an update is available...if so it will tell you and once you want to continue you will be asked for a password. Even if you're on an admin account you need to put a password.
Personally I have mine set on weekly and not to automatically download in the background. And every now and then I check it manually too. I don't think I ever miss a recent update by more than a day or two at the most. Not to mention I frequent site such as macrumors.com which always include a post when an update is released as well...
Not sure that completely answers your question but hope it helps a little...

  • Software Update + System Preferences won't launch from menu bar

For some reason, I cannot launch Software Update or System Preferences from the apple menu bar. This happened after I quit Parallels. I can open System Preferences from Applications. I tried launching Software Update from About this Mac, and that didn't work either. Is there something I can do in Terminal?
    Thanks in advance,
    Eric

Hi Eric, I doubt Terminal would be the way to go.

  • Lion's Software Update to slow when connecting to a Snow Leopard Server

    Hello…
I have some problems with the Lion's Software Update.
I try to make them by our server (10.6.8). The server's conf has been updated as explain in this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4771
After doing that the server has downloaded all Lion updates.
When I try to connect with my Lion installed Mac Book Pro, the Software update window appears, but seem to be stuck…
I've made the test on an Lion installed iMac 27, everything was fine. :/
Here ars the Software Update service's logs: apparently connection is all right.

you don't need to import users from SL server to lion if your binding to your SL OD master
the SL OD master users and groups will show in profile manager
lion server has to be OD master to use profile manager, you'll end up with 2 masters the SL server
and lion. unless your planing on migrating the SL server to lion
what I'm currently using,  lion OD master is bound  the SL OD master with out username and password
SL server OD master users and groups also appear in WGM on lion server
sorry I quite don't understand why you'd want to import users from SL into lion
you'd end up with having to keep to OD's in sync with passwords and users
which kinda defeats the purpuse of having one point for authentication??
if you just want to test lion an a separate LAN you could try exporting users and groups computers from SL
and importing in lion, you'd lose the user passwords
you could still test lion proile manager without importing users just as you've done
if you've setup everything correctly and joined the SL OD master from the lion OD master users should appear in WGM and profile manger. in my case I jioned the Lion server to the SL OD master before setting up lion profile manager, OD master etc.

  • HT1414 Trying to upload software updates on ipad2 when screen froze

Trying to upload software updates on ipad 2 when the screen froze with the message iso6 and an arrow and configure. When pressed the message becomes update complete just a few more steps to follow. But it will not continue and will not escape when pressing on/off and home together. I'm stuck.

If you can shut down, try Recovery Mode.
    Recovery Mode
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times.

  • Software Updates re-download when enabled.

Software Update service was working well for a while, but for some reason now when I enable new downloaded updates they immediately re-download, then become disabled again when they're done. I re-enable, but the same process happens. I currently have Download All set, but I manually enable them. Nothing shows up in the error or service logs. Help!

Make sure your internet connection is solid, and restart your computer before trying again. It's a bit of a superstitious addition, but if I'm having trouble with a program I also make sure nothing else is running that isn't necessary.

  • Retina Macbook software update system preferences not updating.

I have a brand new retina 13" MacBook Pro but for some reason software update is stuck. In system preferences it reads "Last update on Monday March 18, 2013". Even though I click update now then it checks the app store and there are no updates in that section it always shows that Monday date never the current date.
Anyone know how to fix this?

It's telling you the last update was applied Monday March 18, 2013 and that there are no more updates right now for your machine.
You don't need to manually check, it will nag you about updates automatically.
If you need the current date and time, there are plenty of apps and/or the Finder menu clock to tell you that.

  • Don't use the Software Update in Preferences - download the Combo Updater !

Software Update failed and I had to archive/install back to 10.5 - just download the Combo Updater and you should be ok.

To close this thread - the Combo update worked perfectly and my machine is exactly how it was before starting the update process - except for about 12 gig, which I assume the archive/install ate up.

  • Software update not available when roaming?

I have been waiting for ICS long enough.. Now I'm on international roaming and connected to a wifi source, but the 'system updates' option on my phone is gray and not available. Is it possible to update while roaming? Don't want to wait until I return to the US... thanks!

Hello creambear! I have great news for you! The ICS update has started effective 6/22. The process takes 3 - 4 weeks to complete and is being released in stages. If you are one of the lucky ones to get it sooner than later then it can be downloaded and installed via wifi. As usual, you will receive an alert on your phone advising that it is available for you, assuming you are connected to a data network at the time. If you have any additional questions for me then don't hesitate to reply to this message. Thank you. ^AH
