"Software update" doesn't do anything whatsoever!

I have run "Software update" on my new Intel Mac Pro (10.4.9) successfully. Today, no matter how many times I select it from the Apple menu of Finder, the "Software update" doesn't do anything: no error, no "checking at Apple", nothing! Has anyone seen this, and what can I do to make it work again?
Mike

Go to System Preferences/Software Update, and
initiate it from there.
aha! That worked - great, thanks. Do you know why it stopped working from the Apple menu?!?
It should start working from
the Apple Menu after you do. To prove it, as SU
begins to run from System Preferences, click on the
Finder, then select SU from the Apple Menu. It should
immediately bring you to the SU window.
nope - this one didn't work. I tried clicking on it from Apple while it was "checking" and nothing happened. But after it was done checking, it did bring up the "new software is available for your computer" window.
So, it's not the end of the world since I can now run it from System Preferences, but it's kind of worrysome that it just stopped working. Also, does this mean it won't happen automatically (on a schedule)?

I'm trying to download java on my Mac machine but the software update doesn't show me anything. Please advise what I should do to get the application.

If you can run it under chrome, you have java installed.
There was some malware that exploited an older version of Java (not javascript) running in a Browser. Since few people use it Apple turned off Java by default in the Safari Browser.
If you need it for something, just turn it back on in Safari preferences (inside Safari). After a few months of non-use, you may find it has turned itself off again.

  • The software update doesn't support arabic languag...

can you help me about thu=is problem please?
I have nokia N73 and I make a newer update software. it installs successfully but the problem is that Software updater doesn't support Arabic language.
    please
    if you can help me.
    I want it nessecary.

I actually published an interactive Arabic textbook with iBooks Author - there were a lot of annoying formatting bugs, and more of it was in english than Arabic, as it was for beginners. I submitted it to see how much interest there was for doing more in Arabic, but I haven't had much demand so far.
check it out if you like:

there are a couple mistakes that I am aware of, and will update for the latest version, but if you see anything else, feel free to let me know.

  • Lion 10.7.2 Software Update doesn't offer Lion 10.7.3

    2007 Mac Pro 3GHZ (2,1) with Lion 10.7.2.
Software Update doesn't see that the 10.7.3 update is available for this machine. I successfully upgraded a MacBook Pro using Software Update, but this machine doesn't find it. So, I've downloaded the Combo Update and will run it tomorrow, unless someone here thinks something else is amiss.

It's definitely not being presented to some machines.
My Mid-2011 Mac Mini Server was presented the update via Software Update and installed fine.
My Mid-2011 27", Early-2009 24" iMacs and my Mid-2010 Macbook Pro aren't being presented the update.
As a question, are you using Filevault by any chance? It's the only common thread I can find between the three that aren't working for me.
Edit:  Give the Combo update a shot.   Looks to have worked fine for me.

  • Software Update doesn't find 10.5.7 Update

I have a 3-month old MacBook Pro and software update doesn't find the 10.5.7 update, About This Mac says my system is 10.5.6. I also have an orginal MacBook Pro running Leopard and this finds it.

Forget software update, it's better to update through combo (or directly downloaded from apple site) anyway.

Make sure to verify/repair the disk, and repair permissions from the OSX install disk Disk Utility before updating.
Also if you have Disk Warrior run that before and after install.
Lastly, most importantly...CLONE your drive before any install.
Use Superduper! or Carbon Copy Cloner.

You could try deleting the /Library/Printer/EPSON and the /Library/Caches/Epson/ folder and then reinstalling the updates.

  • Clicking 'update' in software update doesn't update

Clicking update doesn't do anything, these remain in my window. I tried restarting but issue remains.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

Just delete it from the Applications folder, and re-download it.
If it still says installed when you go to Purchased in App Store, click somewhere else, and option-click Purchased. That allows you to redownload already installed software.

The update servers are still under pretty heavy load, so it's possible it's nothing on your end. Are you trying to do it over the air or through iTunes?

As Retired Engineer indicated, you will need to install Snow Leopard first.  After you install Snow Leopard, you need to go into Software Update and perform the updates.  10.6.6 will install the App Store.  You should continue to update to 10.6.8 before purchasing and installing Lion from the App Store.
Be sure your machine meets the minimum requirements.  Basically, any Mac with a Core 2 Duo processor or later and at least 2GB of RAM (but 4 is highly recommended).  If you have a first generation MacBook Pro with a Core Duo, you will not be able to upgrade to Lion.

  • Software update doesn't let me update anything after installing Snow Leopar

    Hi there,
I have just upgraded my iMac from Leopard OS X v10.5.8 to Snow Leopard OS X v10.6, straight from the DVD. The installation went well, but my Magic Mouse was not working properly, so I ran Software Update to see if I needed a new update for the Magic Mouse. Software Update came up with a few things for me to update, but when I click the Install button it greys out for a few seconds, then comes back to normal. It doesn't ask me for any passwords or anything, just doesn't work. It's like I haven't even clicked the install button.
I have tried everything, reinstalled Snow Leopard, restored to Leopard again and installed Snow Leopard again, still the same problem. So I tried the manual downloads from Apple. They don't work either. I cannot install anything. Can't install OS X v10.6.1 nor OS X v10.6.2 nor OS X v10.6.3, not any of the the Combos Update either.
Disk Utility says the HD seems to be ok. I have tried repairing permissions, that doesn't do anything either. Could anyone help me, please? I have looked for answers everywhere in this discussion forum.
    Many Thanks

What happens when you try to run those installers?
Have you used the Console Utility to see if there are any messages that explain the problem?

  • Software Update Doesn't Work - Now getting software error message

The software update still doesn't work.  Now when I get the red triangle with the red exclamation point, when I start to remove the back of the phone I get an orange error message that takes up most of the screen.  At the end of the message it says that there is a problem with the ota__.zip package.  Then it gives me the option of rebooting.
Does anyone know if/when this software problem will be fixed?
I would definitely not recommend this phone to anyone.  Phone doesn't work, VZ and HTC can't fix the problem.
    Thanks.

It is not my problem!!  First of all, I don't ask for the download to start.  It starts on its own, several times a day.  Second, I use WiFi connection because 4G rarely works.
Third, I did everything Verizon said to do - I went to a local VZ Wireless store where they did a factory reset.  Then they tried the download - it took 3 hours to download and then the update failed.
Up until today the phone itself (not me) tried to download and apply the update several times per day.  Each time it fails.  The screen displays a black background with a red triangle with a red exclamation point through it.  Up until today I had to remove the back of the phone and then remove and replace the battery to unlock the phone.
Today when I started to remove the back of the phone the orange error messages appeared as stated in my original post.
Verizon also recommended talking to HTC which I did and they had no idea what the problem was.
Verizon also told me that if the update still failed after the factory reset they would send me a new phone.  I said okay but they sent me a used phone instead (factory refurbished).  They said they should not have told me they would send me a new phone.  Then they said that when I return the phone if it gets lost then Verizon will bill me for the phone and I will have to get the money back from Fedex.  Outrageous!  Verizon didn't send me the phone they said they would and then said I would be billed for the cost of the phone if Fedex lost it.  I have never experienced such poor "customer service"  (or should I say customer unservice).
I prefer Android and Microsoft Windows to anything Apple but I am seriously considering getting an iphone since this phone doesn't work and isn't supported.

  • Software Updater doesn't work, can't shut down my mac

    Hi,
I am using the Mac OS 10.5 and have a problem with my Software Updater. If I open the "Software Updater" from the Apple-Menu nothing happens, if i press on the button "Software Updater" in the "About this Mac" window, again no reaction. If I open the "System Preferences" and click there on "Search" in the window "Software Updater" again nothing happens.
I have another problem which might occured at the same time as the discribed above. If I shutdown my mac it starts shutting down but then goes to the LogIn menu of my account, if i try to shut it down there it starts shutting down and comes back to the logIn menu.
The problem startet to occure after I ones interrupted the software update.
Yesterday I installed the Combo Update for Mac OS X 10.5.6 (before 10.5.5) which I downloaded from the Apple website, but it didnt help. Basicaly before I installed the update the buttons for the Sofware Updater couldnt even been clicked and if I was shutting down the notebook it went to this supernova background picture which I had when i was turning on my mac for the first time.
Any ideas how i can solve this problems? Searched the web but could find anything.
    Thanks in advace
    Zhe

It sounds like the aborted software update messed up your system.
I'd opt for an Archive & Install of Mac OS X using your Leopard DVD.
