Since yesterday all my usual .xls files will not open (Office for Mac 2011). CAN open .xlxs files. Default 'open with' is Microsoft Excel.app. No software updates done yesterday or the day before (or maybe a Silverlight or an Acrobat one by accident?). Have repaired disc permissions. HHD name is still same as it always was. What next? Thanks
PS I'm not a great techie so assume I don't know what you're talking about!

You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

  • Internet Connect crash/Software Update won't open

    I have a 500mhz G3 slot loading iMac running 10.3.9
About 2 weeks ago, after waking FrankenMac up from sleep mode, I noticed the Airport status symbol failed to appear in the menu bar (next to the volume/date&time etc).
Looking into my Network settings revealed that I was indeed still connected to the internet, via my Airport, all systems go. However, I noticed that "show airport status in menu bar" was unchecked, so I checked the box. Which apparently did jack squat b/c there's still no icon.
For the last couple weeks, as long as I've been connected to the internet, I could really give a flying flip about whether the airport status icon is there or not. I mean, seriously. I know this computer is a little old so why rock the boat on something trivial?
Until today. Today I was determined to figure out where the icon is, why it went away and if there are any other underlying problems.
I started first with Internet connect. Applications->Internet Connect, clicked on the purple IC button, only to have it launch in the dock, bounce once, then quit.

I attempted to open Software Update next to see if there was something critical (ha!) I might be missing. Apple menu->software update and it was a repeat performance of Internet Connect, except this time I wouldn't even get so much as the Software Update icon in the dock. The dock would move everything to the left, as if it was going to open, then....nothing.
*Software update was working as of 6/14*, when I updated (perhaps foolishly) to Quicktime 7.5.

This ridiculously long post boils down to 2 questions, really.
    • Any ideas why Internet Connect and Software Update won't open and how to fix?
    • Where in the world is my Airport status icon? (not that it matters since I'm connected to the internet, but doggone it!)
I've run Disk Utility, repaired permissions and the HD checks out fine. I'm just at a loss (not surprising, given my limited amount of fix-it-yerself knowledge)
Should I just put up, shut up and be grateful that these problems, while aggravating, aren't majorly disrupting my life?

Do you mean the Date & Time panel of System Preferences? Do you have the Time Zone set appropriately? Have you selected "Set data and time automatically"? Do you turn it off and disconnect it from power between these happenings?
Mactracker doesn't list a "MacBook Pro 2.6". Is that the actual model of your MacBook? How old is it?

Any ideas on what to do here?

  • Saved Software Updates don't work

I have two computers running OS 10.5.8 and in order to reduce downloads I set Software update to download and save package. Then copy the package to the other computer before installing.
Several updates downloaded in this way don't work.
for example, itunes 9.0.2 gave me a folder with an alias ITunes.dist which started the installer but found no software to install, there was also a folder with 5 different installers in it.
    AppleMobileDeviceSupport.pkg
    CoreFP.pkg
    iTunesAccess.pkg
    iTunesX-9.0.2.dist
    iTunesX.pkg
The dist one again finds no software, the iTunesX.pkg seems to install the software, but when I open the itunes it says it is corrupt.
Is there a special order in which one needs to run all these installers?
I finally gave up and downloaded a new version of iTunes from the Apple web site, but it rather invalidates the point of software update to do that every time!
Thanks for you help. Charles West.

You need to run all the packages, ignoring the dist file. Actually, there are only four installer packages. The order is iTunesX, Access, MobileDevice, and CoreFP. Do note that it's probably better to just manually download them once since they then come in a single package without a distribution.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Software Update doesn't open a Finder window

I am helping a friend new to the Mac OS learn to use the "download only" option in Software Update. On my Mac, when the download completes, a new Finder window opens and shows the complete path to the update pkg(s). I have my Finder window preference set for column view.
I recommended that my friend use the "download only" option on 4 recent updates.
On her Mac, the downloads arrived, but a Finder window never opened. As a result, she was in a panic because she had no idea where the downloads went.
It has now been verified that they are indeed in /Library/Packages. But she had no way of knowing to look there.
I am trying to win this new user over to the Mac, and told her how Software Update would simply show her where it put the pkg files, but it truly doesn't happen on her machine.
It is the late 2006 Core 2 Duo iMac, 2.0 GHz (Intel), running 10.4.11, with almost all subsequent updates.
She is a "new user" in the sense that a) she is 78 years old and b) her previous PC ran Windows 95. She has had a very rough 2 years to date with Tiger - I receive a "HELP!" e-mail or phone call every 2-3 days. She looks for Mac Help in Mail, looks for Address Book Help in iPhoto, etc.
Excuse the digression. Any ideas why Software Update refuses to show where the downloads are? Any possible fixes? I know this is a small problem, but it's a significant one for my friend.
    Thanks

I'm aware of that approach. I personally think its handy to have the update installers all at hand before I do any updates. If an update goes badly, sometimes it can be a good idea to verify the hard drive, repair permissions, and reapply it, at least that's what I've seen recommended many times for problematic updates.
I'm trying to avoid a philosophical discussion, though, of how to do OS X updates (standalone dmg files vs. Software Update, repairing permissions, or not, safe boot, or not etc. etc.) I've seen long, long discussions. I've never used Software Update to do an update on my machine, but that's only my preference. I could be branded a complete Luddite for this.
I was just hoping that someone out there had a quick fix for the "busted" automatic Finder window - that's all I seek. If not, it's not a serious problem, and I'll move on. Just irritating to see it work 100% perfectly on one Mac and not at all on the other.
    Thank you for your input.

  • ITunes 9.0.1 through SOFTWARE UPDATE - DON'T DO IT

Good ol' Apple have done it again!
Just DL-ed the latest iTunes 9.0.1 and as with the previous release, 8 something, it tells me that *_the installation was corrupted_*. As a result I now have Software Update telling me that the machine needs no new software.
Going to iTunes page at Apple to DL the whole package doesn't help because the machine is seen as being up to date.
*_Be very WARY of this upgrade_*. Last time it took me 2 days to get iTunes working properly by trashing the newer version and restoring the older from a Firewire Boot drive.
    WORKROUND:
    1) Trash the package receipt in /Library/Reciepts (or your machine will be seen as up to date)
    2) Trash the iTunes.app
    3) Go to Apple.com and download the whole package and install from there.
Seems to work fine for me.
I used to trust Apple's software updating, now I'm worried each time I see that there are new updates available.

I upgraded to iTunes 9.0 - no issues - then to 9.0.1 - again no issues.
I usually d/l the .dmg for most updates instead of using Software Update. I will launch Software Update to see what I need then usually do it myself.
It is best if you are going to give instructions to specify which file and the correct name of each file to trash and the correct path. There is more than one Receipts folder. I also have more than one iTunes receipt.

  • 10.7.4 in Software update, 'don't have permission', cannot run combo client

Software Update says that 10.7.4 is available for download. I attempted to install it and type in all my usual password info, but the system says:
'The update “Mac OS X Update” can’t be saved. You don't have permission.'
I then downloaded the combo client and attempted to run the package. It stated that 'The installation failed. The Installed can't create the folder "/var/folders/z7.....etc......'
Not exactly sure what is happening. I've tried repairing permissions, and it did not work. I am the only user on the account. Any ideas?

Called Apple Support. They had me create a new Admin account and install the update. Looks like the update is downloading fine now. They scheduled a call back to help me repair my original Admin account because they said it's now screwed up.

  • Installer.app and software update don't work anymore

    hi there,
i just repaired my hd using diskwarrior, which was succesful. now i tried to get some updates installed, but just at the start of the process for every .pkg file i tried, installer says there was a problem and that i have to try again. of course, trying again doesn't help.
that problem, which also includes software update in the very same way, already existed before i fixed my drive with diskwarrior. it was the initial reason i ran a disk repair.
any ideas, especially any that don't involve reinstalling os x?
before, the system had been running fine for several years.
    thanx,
    ulrich christian

At this point Ulrich I'm back from vacation. Did you do anything else?

  • Safari, Mail and Software Update crash upon open after  S/U 2006-004

After installing the latest Security Update, Mail, Safari, and Software all crash upon open. nother strange this is that when I do a FIND on Safari, it seems to be in the Root "/" directory. The only way that we can get onto the inter is by using IE. I have also tried to create another user to see if that helps, but Safari just shows up as a "?" in the dock. When I goto applications, and open it there, it still crashes under the new user. Itunes will successfully go to the Music Store.

I reloaded the Mac OS on the mac that was having the problem.
