Software update - download and save

The loss of the download and save option in software updates is a serious issue for people like me who do not have the luxury of a fast connection. Typically an OS updatetakes 5-6 hours. So we download and save to use on multiple machines.
Downloading from the website is not an option because if I download more than about 2 at once the connection drops. In the past I could leave the updater on overnight and download all the updates sequentially. Now I have to stay up overnight to do this!
Can anyone advise me of if there is a workround. How can I stop my Mac destroying the update after installing?
And please Apple can you restore the download and install later option. The message I'm getting is that you have little interest any more in your developing world clients.

Just a note to let you know that Apple won't restore the download and save option. at least that was their response to my bug reports noting that it was missing.
If you want to report this issue to Apple, send a bug report or an enhancement request via its Bug Reporter system. To do ths, join the Apple Developer Connection (ADC)—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report or enhancement request. The nice thing with this procedure over submitting feedback is that you get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.
Finally, the *softwareupdate --list* command manually in the Terminal app will tell you what's available for updates.

  • Flash Player update 10.3 unable to download and save flv files

    Hello,
Since the Flash Player update to 10.3.183.10 it is no longer possible for me to download and save *.flv files. A file of only 2320 kb is saved along with a meta file of 1 kb. The 2320 kb file has a flv extension but the file will not play in any of my media players. Files of mp4 type still download and play fine. The problem only occurred following the last upgrade and even though I uninstalled then reinstalled Adobe Flash Player I cannot overcome the problem. My PC runs MS Windows Vista Home Premium Version: 6.0.6002 Service Pack 2 Build 6002. Browser Internet Explorer 9.0.8112.16421.
Your assistance would be much appreciated.
    Dibloc

    Thank you.
The problem only occurs when downloading flv files from YouTube. For all video downloads I have been using RealPlayer and experience no problems when downloading flv files from sites other than YouTube.
Have been able to download these files now using the site http://www.savevid.com/
Perhaps YouTube are blocking the use of RealPlayer from downloading flv files?

I forgot my password and am trying to reset my ipod, but it won't work.It says that my ipod is in recovery mode and that I must restore it. I click ok, and then click on restore and update. Then it says connecting ipod software update server and a screen pops up with ipod software update on the top and iOS 5.1. It lists a bunch of stuff this update contains and on the bottom it says next, which I click and nothing happens, it just goes back to the ipod restore page. Help, what am I doing wrong?

This device is not eligible for the requested build (Also sometimes displayed as an "error 3194")
Update to the latest version of iTunes. Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard) users may need to download iTunes 10.6.3.
Third-party security software or router security settings can also cause this issue. To resolve this, followTroubleshooting security software issues.
Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to performunauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. Uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer.
Edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from your hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect. For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart.
Avoid using an older or modified .ipsw file. Try moving the current .ipsw file (see Advanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations), or try restoring in a new user to ensure that iTunes downloads a new .ipsw.

The App Store version sometimes gives problems. As you can't install 10.8.4 from the App Store, download and install the Combo edition > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1659?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US This edition will work and will update OS X to the most recent version, in that case, 10.8.4

  • Download and save files or Office files!

How can I download and save an EXE file or Office files i.e. DOC, XLS or PPT files to iPhone 5 and then transfer them to Computer/Laptop?
    Thanks

It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox.<br />
Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.

  • When does Software Update download in the background?

I work at a school with about 150 Macs. About 50 of them are new imacs with Leopard installed. The default setting is to have software updates download in the background. We have turned that off as 50 machines downloading a 100 meg file at the same time could cause some traffic jams, correct? We download the updates once and install using ARD. My question is, if we forget to turn one off, when does it download? As soon as it is connected to the internet? We have our computers turning on in the morning at 8 and shutting of at 6 pm. When would the software update automatically download in the background? Thanks in advance.

I have always noticed that when I boot my machine, software update checks and if anything is available it will download. I have it set to check daily, and I shut my machine down nightly.
Also it tells you the last time it checked in the preferences.
    Software Update > Preferences
That should tell you your answer for sure.

  • Automatic create Software Update Group and assign patches

Does someone has a e.g. powershell/vbs script which does the following:
    - step 1: verify which patches are added to Windows 7 image using SCCM 2012 Offline Servicing
    - step 2: verify all downloaded and deployed patches in the SCCM 2012 environment
    - step 3: get the multi-reboot patches
Then creates a Software Update Group and add all patches obtained in step 2 and exclude all patches obtained in step 1 and step 3..
Then I can assign that software update group to my Reference Image task sequence and I will not ran in the currently available problems where lists are to big and software updates during the task sequence are failing :-)
Does some likes this and want to help me with it ?
I think it is a nice solution for the patch deployment problem during the reference image task sequence phase.

    1.  I've not written a script for that but to be plain:  why?  There's no reason you shouldnt have those patches downloaded and deployed anyway in case someone makes a computer "the old fashioned way" then joins it to the domain.
    2.  This is what ADR is for.  I've got a few runbooks to help with things like cleaning up expired patches, but you shouldn't need any script for this step specifically.
    3.  Getting multi-reboot patches someone already did for you :)  http://blogs.technet.com/b/deploymentguys/archive/2015/03/11/excluding-known-multi-reboot-updates-during-a-zti-deployment.aspx
Basically for #3, you just replace the update task with the MDT version and put this script right in front.  Bam, done :)  As for the extra scripting to exclude downloading patches you injected with DISM (#1)... I honestly don't see a point ...
but I could probably write something if you wanted.

  • Software Update SSL and Leopard Clinets

    Hello all,
My apologies if this has been reported elsewhere, but I can't find anything.
I have two problems with Software Update on my Snow Leopard Server.
Problem number One (the more minor one),
When the web service is running and SSL is enabled (all be it with a self signed certificate) the software update clients won't connect (Software Update Enabler won't even verify the server when settings). As soon as I turn the SSL website off then there isn't a problem, clients connect to the server without issue.
Problem number Two, which is the MAJOR one!
10.5 Leopard clients connect to the server, but when checking for updates report quickly that my software is up to date (which on a Mac OS 10.5.2 machine is a big porky). A quick look on the Software Updates pane in Server Admin shows that there are no updates (bar I think a Java update) for Mac OS 10.5. I can see 10.4 and 10.6 updates ok, but I don't have any 10.4 or 10.6 clients here to test it. The other strange thing that I have seen reported elsewhere is that on the overview page it states that there are 297 updates downloaded and enabled, but on the update lists it says that there are only 185 updates.
I have reset and reset the software update server clearing out the data folders etc and made it download them from scratch, but it just won't play ball. I have pointed Safari to http://softwareupdate.domainname.com:8088/index-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog and you can see the file (pages upon pages of text) 99% of which makes no sense to me.
These servers are suppose to be going onsite next Monday and I would really like to have the software update server working!
The system is two Intel xServes (one 8 Core Machine and one Quad Core Machine).
The offending software update server is running on the Quad Core Machine which also handles email services and is an Open Directory Replica.
The main server (the 8 Core Machine) is the open directory master. Both servers are running fully up to date Snow Leopard (10.6.2) with all the sub updates (except maybe an iTunes update).
Any help or fresh ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Regarding problem number one (SSL), I am completely confused by the claim. SUS runs its own web service instance on a separate port. Each client pointing to that SUS should have an OS-specific URL as noted in p.89 of the admin guide:
    http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/SystemImaging_and_SW_Update_Adminv10.6.pdf
Do you have any interesting log information that may help diagnose your issue?
Regarding problem two, as noted, 10.6.3 addressed a number of the issues, and as long as the clients are properly configured, they should see relevant updates. As noted above, the difference in update count is a side effect of the two views: the overview pane shows all individual packages downloaded, while the package list counts the number of separate update "clumps" (for lack of a better word).

  • How do I download and save my Free Press e-Edition?

My e-Edition of the Detroit Free Press opens automatically once I'm logged in.  I want to be able to download and save it, but the way it opens doesn't give me those options.  Therefore, if I'm not in an area with WiFi, I can't read the paper.  I want to be able to download and save it sol, when I'm at my friend's house (he's blind), I can read the paper to him.  thanks.

    Late note:
It may work with earlier versions of Firefox, or it may be updated at some point, but it's not working with the current version of Firefox as I post this.

  • IBook G4 hangs during update downloads and Update installs

I have an older iBook G4 (model A1133), and it works great. However, I just reinstalled OS 10.5, and while doing the software updates the download will sometimes "hang" and not complete. However, I can cancel that partcular update process, and then go right back and restart the software update process and the download may complete perfectly. I'm at a loss as to why.
It doesn't appear to be my network connection as my PC downloads just fine. Additionally, I've also had the software update download complete normally, but when it begins the installation process, it will begin the install, but will hang and not complete. When that occurs it generally gets to the "writing the installer script" portion of the install, and will hang up and not complete the install. Again, if I quit and then restart the update process it may comlete everything on the second or third attempt. Does anyone know what may be causing this? Thanks in advance.

I find that it is better to download a major system combo update than rely on the software update function. You could get the 10.5.8 combo updater and apply it as outlined in these articles.
