Software Update Error and Application connectivity problems

Hi. Hoping someone can help me with issues I've been having since we added a wireless access point to our network at home two weeks ago. I'm sharing a network with two pcs, a pc laptop and a ps3. All of which are working fine either using the wireless access point or ethernet through our router.
I have a macbook which is picking up the wireless fine, apart from a few applications. The biggest problem is that software update isn't connecting. I get a message telling me there is a networking error: NSURLError Domain - 1100. I go through the network diagnostics and it tells me that my connection is working correctly.
Another (less worrying but annoying) problem is that some widgets (facebook, wikipedia, translater etc) are not picking up the connection either. Facebook iphoto exporter also doesn't work. There is no in-built firewall in the access point and I haven't changed any firewall settings on my system (which was working perfectly with the ethernet connection). All I changed was the DNS server address.
The only time I have used airport previously is in the library at my university, where I needed to use a proxy address. I'm wondering if this may be interfering with my connection settings now, but am unsure of how to change the setting around. I'm a new mac user and this is the first issue I've had issues. Any help/suggestions are thoroughly appreciated.
thanks.

I'd been having this problem for the past few weeks (causing Software Update to fail with NSURLError -100 and the iTunes radio service to fail) and just fixed it myself.
For me the issue had to do with proxy settings in the browser versus proxy settings in System Preferences. For example, if you run Tor/Vidalia with Firefox, the browser has its own proxy settings that get changed when you activate Tor. But if you use Safari or anything else to set up the proxy, it's the network settings under System Preferences that get affected.
To check this, go to (Apple menu)>System Preferences...>Network, then choose whichever network interface you're currently using. If the lock icon in the lower left-hand corner is locked, click on it and authenticate with your password. Now click Configure... and choose the Proxies tab.
On my machine, I have "Configure proxies:" set to "Manually" (I've never used the other option, "Using a PAC file", so if you have that set I'm not sure how to debug it). Now look through the items in the "Select a proxy server to configure" panel. If there is anything checked there, it should be for a specific reason. If something is checked and you don't know why, try unchecking it.
Finally, click on Apply Now (giving your password again if prompted), close the System Preferences dialog, and try Software Update again.
This solved my problems (I had been fiddling with a local proxy for OS X Mail and Thunderbird). Your mileage may vary. Give that a shot and report back if it helps (or if it doesn't).

  • IPod Nano 7th gen - software update error and now not functioning

    Hello,
I recently plugged an older 7th gen iPod Nano that I hadn't used in a while into my computer (Windows 7 operating system) and iTunes wanted me to let it update its software. I said 'yes,' not really thining anything of it, and as the software update was taking place, an 'unexpected error' occurred. Now my iPod will not turn on or respond or anything. It shut off while plugged into the computer and has stayed off and I am unable to get it to turn back on. It is totally dead, like the failed update somehow ruined my iPod.
The iPod itself was a little damaged - the LCD touchscreen was nonfunctioning due to water damage, and only displayed a white screen when on, but I could still 'shake to shuffle' and it would play all of my music just fine. Now the iPod will not work at all.
Is there anything that can be done or am I just out of luck here? Did the fact that the iPod was damaged have something to do with the failed update?
I'm kind of bummed 'cause the iPod still played my music perfectly....
Thanks for any help or insights anybody can give.

I should add 2 important points: 1) I have no trouble syncing with my PC, just in updating the nano software, and (2) Buried in some Apple reference I found mention of problems if the nano isn't formatted for a PC vs. Mac. It gives info on how to tell what the format is, but it's outdated (the menu choices are different). I believe it is already formatted for a PC because of an entry under Settings/About which says the Version is "1.0 PC". Tell me if I'm wrong. Also, it would help me if I knew the destination of the software download. Does it download directly to the Nano or to a temporary folder on my PC?

Any Ideas of how to solve this one?

After reading all these posts, one by one did not resolve my problem until I got the very end.  Regardless of what step would resolve your problem, these are the steps I would recomment to everyone for a what seems to be a safe and fool-proof upgrade to iTunes 10.5.
    1. Stand alone upgrade to the latest Quicktime version
    2. Go to control panel and "change" then select repair to the following applications in the order specified by the post on Oct 27. (Notice I skipped Quicktime because it had been upgrade manually, and Bonjour did not have a "repair" option)
iTunes; Apple Software Update: Mobile Device Support; Apple Applications Support
Some of these applications may not appear if they do not apply to your configuration (no iPhone, or no iPad, or other apple devices).
Once all updated, I did not need to restart nor launch any applications, I simply went straight into the 10.5 upgrade, and where it normally got stuck, this time the installation continued for a while longer until it completed successfully.
Great work everyone who contributed!  Thank you very much!

  • IPad update Error- There was a problem downloading the software for the iPad .... network settings

"iPad update Error- There was a problem downloading the software for the iPad X you do not have enough access privileges for this operation. Make sure your network settings are correct and your connection is active, or try again." is the error. The rest of iTunes, sycning, and ipad operations work. I am on OSX 10.6.8. iTunes is the most recent addition.
I've been having this problem for a while but it has yet to go away. Any help please?

OK. Good. The most likely culprit is either your firewall or anti-virus software. Temporarily disable both while you are doing the update (then, of course, turn them back on when you are done).

  • Software update - error occurred while checking

    Hello
When I try and use Software Update it fails to connect.
When I use the preferences and "check now" the bar gets about 1 unit across and then a message box appears : "Failed to check for updates. Make sure you can connect to the internet, then try again."
When OK is clicked the progress bar changes to "Last attempt: Failed: Error occurred while checking".
I know I am connected as I can browse with safari. I followed some tips in other similar situations - deleting a preferences file - but that had no success.
I have been trying for about a day now

Hi Robert, did you determine if this is global or not by creating a new user account? Name it "test" and see how your Sotware Update works in that User acct. (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
Let us know and we'll troubleshoot this further.

  • PHP and MySQL Connection problem

I am trying to make a PHP MySQL on a remote server connection in Dreamwesaver CS3.
When I enter the information (host, user, password, etc.) and hit TEST, I get the following error message.
"Access Denied. The file may not exist, or there could be a permission problem. Make sure you have proper authorization on the server and the server is properly configured."
I know the user, password, etc. work, as I can access the MySQL database with other software.
I checked with my host and they say there are no permission problems on their end.
I have checked the settings on the Test Server page in Site Setup and everything looks correct and works there.
I have not seen this particular problem described in other forum postings (although there are a LOT of postings on this topic!).
    Any help would be appreciated.

I thought my testing server was the remote server and is always on as far as I know. I don't know how to turn it on or off.
Is there some other testing server that I should be aware of?

I know you are using remote, but is your testing server on? if not turn that on and see if that does it. it just happened to me working on remote server and could not get mysql conn to work, until I turn on my testing (developer server), then I was able to connect to mysql and the tables that I created in phpmyadmin remotly was downloaded.

I forgot my password and am trying to reset my ipod, but it won't work.It says that my ipod is in recovery mode and that I must restore it. I click ok, and then click on restore and update. Then it says connecting ipod software update server and a screen pops up with ipod software update on the top and iOS 5.1. It lists a bunch of stuff this update contains and on the bottom it says next, which I click and nothing happens, it just goes back to the ipod restore page. Help, what am I doing wrong?

This device is not eligible for the requested build (Also sometimes displayed as an "error 3194")
Update to the latest version of iTunes. Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard) users may need to download iTunes 10.6.3.
Third-party security software or router security settings can also cause this issue. To resolve this, followTroubleshooting security software issues.
Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to performunauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. Uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer.
Edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from your hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect. For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart.
Avoid using an older or modified .ipsw file. Try moving the current .ipsw file (see Advanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations), or try restoring in a new user to ensure that iTunes downloads a new .ipsw.

  • The Iphone software update server couldnot be connected

i wanted to upgrade my iphone 4 to ios 5 then i did a bad thing and turned itunes off while restoring my phone now my phone doesnot turn on and when i try it it says connect to itunes but when i do this this eror The Iphone software update server couldnot  be connected apw please some one helps me

    Thanks again.
    I figured out the problem.
Evidently, unbeknownst to me, my Internet connection (via Ethernet) at work has started blocking some traffic -- namely iTunes "ipod server". (Other than this there is no evidence that my Internet access is restricted; I have full web access including the iTunes store). When I disconnected the Ethernet and used the public WiFi access, iTunes was able to connect to "the server" and it then recognized my phone as being connected. With that, I was able to do a restore.
    Thanks for your persistence.

  • Safari, iTunes Store, Software Updates are Unable to Connect

    Hi all,
Help, please! Ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard connectivity has been a worrying and upsetting issue.
Often times I couldn't go online using Safari. Now it's getting much worse: Software Updates, Safari and iTunes Store are unable to connect at all.
I have no problem going online with Firefox, I have no problem downloading / installing, Transmission works just fine, everything else works just a-ok.
So, I have no idea what is wrong.
    Thanks in advance!

Make sure that you have no proxy set in your Network preferences if you don't need one, or that you do have one set if you do.
Mac OS X as a whole and Firefox have two entirely separate methods of configuring proxies, so when Safari can't connect but Firefox can it's usually because of a mismatch in proxy settings between Firefox and Mac OS X itself.

My HTC One received a software update yesterday, and it wiped out most of the theme and live wallpaper options. How do I get the previous options back?

This was NOT an update, rather a downgrade... the font size in text messages is now smaller and difficult to read. I have tried changing font size in settings and it does not apply to text messages. The lock/unlock screen pattern now reminds me of drawing a stick figure. My vehicle is now having problems with Bluetooth importation of my phone book--I keep receiving an on screen error message as it tries to continuously reattempt to import... And yes, the live weather wallpaper i favored is no longer an option... Why?
