Software update error - download error

Hi all,
Every time I run a software update, be it a general update or a specific update i.e iTunes, once the download is complete, this message appears "An error occurred during download." Another message then appears, getting more specific, "The update could not be expanded and verified. It may have been corrupted or tampered with during download. The update will be downloaded and checked again the next time the Software Update runs."
That's all well and good, except every time Software Update runs, the same message appears.
Help please??

I assume that you've already used Disk Utility to Repair Your Permissions.
To determine if the problem is with your user account or the OS itself you could add a temporary Admin user account and see if the Software update program runs like it should.
If the Update program doesn't work in a different user account then the problem is with the OS. So then I'd download the 10.6.2 Combo Update manually and install it over the top of your existing system. Repair Permissions after installing the update. Ignore any warnings that appear in the window and wait for it to say Permission Repair Complete.

Each time I attempt to download the new itunes 10.5 I keep getting the following error message:

Any Ideas of how to solve this one?

After reading all these posts, one by one did not resolve my problem until I got the very end.  Regardless of what step would resolve your problem, these are the steps I would recomment to everyone for a what seems to be a safe and fool-proof upgrade to iTunes 10.5.
    1. Stand alone upgrade to the latest Quicktime version
    2. Go to control panel and "change" then select repair to the following applications in the order specified by the post on Oct 27. (Notice I skipped Quicktime because it had been upgrade manually, and Bonjour did not have a "repair" option)
iTunes; Apple Software Update: Mobile Device Support; Apple Applications Support
Some of these applications may not appear if they do not apply to your configuration (no iPhone, or no iPad, or other apple devices).
Once all updated, I did not need to restart nor launch any applications, I simply went straight into the 10.5 upgrade, and where it normally got stuck, this time the installation continued for a while longer until it completed successfully.
Great work everyone who contributed!  Thank you very much!

  • Nokia Software Updater -- Error 1402.Could not ope...

     H,
When I try to install the Software Updater for the first time to update my Nokia 6500c phone, I receive the following error message about 57% during the install process. I checked my permission keys in the registry, and they seem to have all the correct Admin permission.
    Any suggestions?
Product: Nokia Software Updater -- Error 1402.Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Msxml2.DSOControl.4.0\CLSID.  System error 5.  Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

    Thanks.

    Hi,
It  looks like you do not have access to the registry key mentioned i.e.  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current  Version\Run\Optional Components\IMAIL.
This might be due to  the fact that you may not be added to the Administrators group or the  registry key has been denied access explicitly to a group that you may  be part of.
People in my network setup were facing the same issue,  and we fixed the same using Microsoft's "subinacl" tool. You can follow  the below mentioned steps to rectify your issue as well:
    1. Download Microsoft's SubinACL tool from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe -4a91-93cf-ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en
    2. Install the same by double clicking on the "subinacl.msi" just downloaded.
    3. Open Command Prompt window through the Run Dialog Box (Start -> Run and type "cmd" and click OK)
    4. In the Command Prompt window, type in the following commands:
        i. cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools" (Hit Enter)
       ii. subinacl  /subkeyreg  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Opti  onalComponents /grant=administrators=f /grant=SYSTEM=f /grant=USERS=f  /grant="Creator Owner"=f (Hit Enter)
You  should see some processes happening on your screen. After the process  ends, retry the update operation you were originally trying to perform.  Hopefully, it should succeed now.

  • How do I block this msg from always popping up "iTunes requires Safari 4.0.3 or later to be installed to use the iTunes Store within iTunes. Use Software Update to download and install the latest version of Safari" bc I can't download the latest software?

  • I can not perform software updates or download any programs. They appear in the download box as images that are not recognized. How can I fix this?

I can not perform software updates or download any programs. They appear in the download box as images that are "not recognized". I thought maybe my antivirus software was setting up a firewall, but I have disabled it, so that's not the case. Any suggestions as to  how I can fix this?

If the downloads are gone, it's possible that Windows is removing the downloads based on security policies set in IE. I realize that sounds strange, but it's related to Firefox's feature of submitting downloads to your virus scanner and marking them as having come from the internet.
To test this theory, you could try disabling the scan feature. I assume you have good "real time" antivirus protection which checks every file saved to your hard drive. (If not, you really should get that, and you can use Microsoft's free [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials Microsoft Security Essentials] for now until you have time to review all the available choices.)
    (1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (2) In the filter box, type or paste '''scan''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (3) Double-click '''browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone''' to toggle its value.
Firefox now should ignore Windows' download security. Does it change how Windows handles the file?

  • Updating Options - Software Update or download page

    Hello!
I've noticed some people (when talking about OS software updates) recommend downloading a new update via the downloads page as opposed to downloading through Software Updates.
May I ask why this is often the preferred method? Wouldn't Software Update offer a more 'bespoke' download since its directly checked your system for what exactly is required?
    Thanks for your views.

    Ditto what BDaqua said.
    Some other things:
Some people prefer to install in Safe Mode when your computer is just booted to a small set of system files, potentially avoiding some things that could interfere with software installation. In safe mode your internet connection is down so you have to have the installer package on your computer already.
Although you don't have to, with Software Update there is the temptation to let it install a whole bunch of stuff at one time. If one package presents a problem you can't tell which one it is. I download all the packages I feel I am in more control and can pace it better.

  • Software Update - no Download only option

    Good afternoon.
The version of Software Update shipping with 10.6.n has no 'Download Only' option. A real nuisance when you are used to downloading updates and deploying them via Apple Remote Desktop.
Furthermore, some updates listed in Software Update are not on the Support/Downloads area to download manually.
I wonder if anyone out there has a workaround to enable Software Update to 'Download Only' please?

Hi. Thanks for this. I already do what you suggest, but not all the indicated updates are available by download. There was a Bonjour update that was not listed in Support/Updates for example.

  • Apple Software Update - Error occures while trying to download

I've been trying all different ways to install the latest version of itunes.
I've tried downloading manually and installing but the installer doesn't launch.
So i've tried to do it using the Apple Software Update, but everytime it comes up with:
'Errors occured while installing updates. If the problem persists, choose tools > download only and try installing manually!
    I'm out of options!
    Any help?

At least we have some sort of error message from iTunes setup, unfortunately I don't know what it means.
You are logged on as an adminstator are't you, I didn't ask before. Do you have another account you could try installing from?
There are a couple of other things I would like you to try.
Empty Your Windows Temp directory. The following article tells you how towards the bottom of the page under: *Empty your Temp directory and restart*
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1926
Does that allow the install to go through?
It would be intersting to see if the stand alone QUicktime installer works on your system, I still wonder if you have a more general problem with isntalls.
You can download from the following apge, you want the version WITHOUT iTunes.

  • ITunes won't open ; Apple software update error

When I double click iTunes, the computer thinks briefly (hourglass) then does nothing.  iTunes won't load.
    QuickTime Player opens fine.
But Apple Software Update now gives me a strange error message.
Anybody know how to interpret it?  Might it be linked to my iTunes not loading?
    The procedure entry point

I'm having similar issues on PC Windows Ultimate 7 32bit.  Husband tells me iTunes updated last night on both his and my laptops (same OS), without asking for confirmation, which I thought was unusual.  Tried opening iTunes various times today and no response.  Restarted and still no improvement.
Tried repairing and uninstalling iTunes, very slow and glitchy but eventually seemed to have got rid of the software. Downloaded most recent installer link from Apple website and attempted reinstall, but it didn't get past the empty-barred status window.
Aborted and found an old installer from earlier back-up - version 10.2 something.  Install appeared to run smoothly but I still can't actually open iTunes.
Any help appreciated as we now have two laptops that won't shut down properly (seems they think iTunes is still running, even though we can't access it or close it in Task Manager), 2 iPhone 4s and an iPad that we can't use properly!

  • Apple Software Update error- "Entry Point not found"

I have had Apple Software Update/ iTunes on my PC for over 4 years. Today, randomly, when I went to update iTunes to the new 10.5 version, Software Update did not prompt me to update. That was odd, but I didn't realize anything was amiss yet at this point.
In iTunes, I went Help > Check for Updates which indicated the new version was downloaded. When promted whether I'd like to update, I hit yes, which even more oddly took me to apple.com to download iTunes all over again. (Normally, updates download from within iTunes and it's an update, not a full hour-long re-download.)
I didn't want to redownload iTunes (what would happen to all of my previously downloaded apps and music, set playlists?) so I opened Software Update, and got the following error message:
SoftwareUpdate.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point ?CreateProductsFromXML@CSUCatalogObject@@QAEXP6AIPAXIIJ@ZOIV?@CStringT@WV?$StrT raitMFC@WV?ChTraitsCRT@W@ATL@@@@@ATL@@@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library SoftwareUpdateFiles.dll
    Strange, right?
    So my questions.
1.) Does anyone know why Apple Software Update would suddenly get errors? I've used it recently (this past weekend?) and everything was fine.
2.) Is there a way to fix Software Update, since I'll surely need it in the future.
3.) In the meantime, should I proceed with re-downloading the full version of iTunes again, and will it mess up anything I currently have in my iTunes library? Would I need to back it up or do anything to help ensure there are no further problems?
Thanks for your help. To say I'm confused is an understatement!

Well... after I posted this, some info from other posts came up and I found the answer!
In case anyone has the same issue that runs across this... this worked for me perfectly.

  • IPod Nano 7th gen - software update error and now not functioning

    Hello,
I recently plugged an older 7th gen iPod Nano that I hadn't used in a while into my computer (Windows 7 operating system) and iTunes wanted me to let it update its software. I said 'yes,' not really thining anything of it, and as the software update was taking place, an 'unexpected error' occurred. Now my iPod will not turn on or respond or anything. It shut off while plugged into the computer and has stayed off and I am unable to get it to turn back on. It is totally dead, like the failed update somehow ruined my iPod.
The iPod itself was a little damaged - the LCD touchscreen was nonfunctioning due to water damage, and only displayed a white screen when on, but I could still 'shake to shuffle' and it would play all of my music just fine. Now the iPod will not work at all.
Is there anything that can be done or am I just out of luck here? Did the fact that the iPod was damaged have something to do with the failed update?
I'm kind of bummed 'cause the iPod still played my music perfectly....
Thanks for any help or insights anybody can give.

I should add 2 important points: 1) I have no trouble syncing with my PC, just in updating the nano software, and (2) Buried in some Apple reference I found mention of problems if the nano isn't formatted for a PC vs. Mac. It gives info on how to tell what the format is, but it's outdated (the menu choices are different). I believe it is already formatted for a PC because of an entry under Settings/About which says the Version is "1.0 PC". Tell me if I'm wrong. Also, it would help me if I knew the destination of the software download. Does it download directly to the Nano or to a temporary folder on my PC?
