Software Update - Files Stored locally

Hi Peeps. I am now down to 20gb on my 100gb MacBook Pro HD. I need to find some more space! I have gone through and removed all the old iPhone and iPod firmware updates I no longer need and lots of the additional files from Applications I no longer use.
Here is my question - do the software updates (Downloaded via the automated Software Update App) get stored locally on my drive? If so where are they and is it safe to bin them? I really need to free up some space.
I know this is an Apple forum but are there another Apps that leave large lingering files behind following an update. (MS Office 08, Quark 7.31, CS3, Final Cut Xpress, iLife 08 etc)?
Look forward to your help

Nothing you download through Software Update should leave any installers on your Mac. If you download outside of Software Installer, it's up to you to eject and delete the .dmg file. If you have any, you would see them in the sidebar of Finder or in your Downloads folder.
Have you gone to /Library/Printers and deleted all but print driver(s) you use? That will free up some space. Since your data is not about to begin shrinking, I also strongly suggest you get another disk for backup
EDIT: What Size can help you find what's hogging your disk space.

  • Can't Load Pages - Proxy PAC file stored locally

    Hi folks,
I was using last Safari 2 version and recently updated to Safari 3.0.4 and 3.1 and then it was impossible to connect using my corporate VPN solution. We use Juniper Network Connect 5.5.0 solution and during connection, this software changes IE7 proxy configuration by editing PAC URL (proto=http://, when connected on corporate network) to a PAC path of a file stored locally in "...\Application Data\Juniper Networks\Network Connect 5.5.0\instantproxy.pac" (proto=file://, when abroad). When I disconnect it, it reverts the changes back to an URL address.
When I found out this, I tried to copy and paste the proxy path stored in IE7 to the Safari address bar and tried to load the file.
    IE7:
    +file://C:\Documents and Settings\MyName\Application Data\Juniper Networks\Network Connect 5.5.0\instantproxy.pac+
Safari transform the pasted address to:
    +file:///C:/Documents%2520and%2520Settings/MyName/Application%2520Data/Juniper%25 20Networks/Network%2520Connect%25205.5.0/instantproxy.pac+
And tries to load but then I have a "Safari Can't find the file." error.
Looking back to Safari transformed address, I saw that there is "%2520" code that represents the spaces. But wait..."%20" isn't the space representative code? I think, we have a small bug here...
So I replaced "%2520" codes by "%20" and tried to load the file. As expected the file loads!!!
I reported this as a bug but I hope that someone can share some experience with Safari and|or Juniper Network Connect in order to find a workaround!!

Well without any explanation from Apple, it appears that this bug was fixed. I tested it again on Safari 5.0.4 and it's working great now.

  • Software Update Files

    Hi,
Is it possible to somehow keep all the software update files, so when I re-install my OSX Server Operating System tonight I won't have to download all the updates again?

Hi Cliff, yes it is. They are stored in the /usr/share/swupd/html/ directory. If you backup this directory and all it's contents and copy it back over ,before you try and start the service, once you're up and running, all should be ok.
This is of course assuming you're using the same IP/FQDN setup for the rebuild.
    Cheers

  • How to play a video file stored locally in the system

    hi
how to play a video file stored locally
    thanks

    Hi,
You can't do that in a simple way. You need to have a port open in the firewall, and you need to have a server process on the remote machine.

  • Are Software Update Packages Stored On Computer?

I prefer to download updates to install manually at leisure. It also means that they don't need downloading again.
SU used to have a "Download Only" option but that disappeared a while back.
I know that one can go to the Apple Download page but frequently I am unable to find the download even though I type in its name.
I would have thought that when you use SU, the update has to be downloaded to the computer before it can be installed, so where is it stored . . . . . or is it just deleted?

From what I can tell from install.log, the downloads go to /Library/Updates/ but they are deleted after a successful install, leaving only an updated "ProductMetadata.plist" file in that folder.
If you can't find an update at http://support.apple.com/downloads/ by name, try the "Browse Downloads by Product" option to narrow the list of available ones down to your Mac model or software product. If you still can't find it, it may be available only through the Software Update app.
See Mac OS X: Software update sizes can vary for related info about "smaller-sized Delta" updates available only through the Software Update app.

  • Point a client to get software updates from the local OS X Server

I have an OS X Server that's serving only clients as a File Share device that I would like to use for Software Updates. There are three Mac Clients and a bunch of iOS clients. How do I use Software updates from the Server? I read the instructions on configuration but have the following questions:
Where do I find the correct port and catalog file name?
The instruction specify a port of 8088 and a catalog of 'index.sucatalog" in the example. Is this always the case?
I can write to the .plist specified but cannot read from it (get an error). I can see that the file has been written and the data is correct. What's wrong?

Apple's Software Update Server only provides updates for Apple Mac software. It does not provide updates for Mac Applications via the AppStore nor does it provide any updates for iOS devices.
Apple's Caching Server works differently. When a Mac or iOS device on your network requests an update from either the Mac AppStore or the iOS AppStore this will then be 'cached' on the server so that next time a device requests the same update it is available locally.
The URL for a local Software Update Server would be of the form
    http://server.domain.com:8088/index.sucatalog
This would be written on a client Mac as follows
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://server.domain.com:8088/index.sucatalog
It would be read on a client Mac as follows
    defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL
Note: Older versions of OS X had a version of the defaults command which did not like you including the file extension of the plist file so in the past the following would fail.
    defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist CatalogURL

  • 10.6 software update service: storing updates on SAN?

we've been, for some time, running our 10.5 and 10.6 apple software updates on an in-house x-serve without any problems. and, because we've got a SAN, we've chosen to keep the software updates stored on the SAN and not buried in the /var/db/swupd/html directory.
with this setup, we've never had an issue. however...
this week, i upgraded our xServe from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8 and the ONLY service that's not made the transition is our SuS.
    i've now tried:
+ starting and stopping the service
+ recreating the symlink from the /var/db/swupd/html folder to our SAN
+ trashing everything in the /etc/swupd folder and restarting the service
+ trashing everything in the /var/db/swupd/html/catalog folder & restarting the service
+ erasing EVERYTHING on the SAN and locally (/etc/swupd and /var/db/swupdate), doing a new, restarting the service to kick off a fresh download from apple for about 5 min before stopping the service, migrating the data, re-creating the symlink and then restarting the service.
    no joy.
did snow leopard server kill the ability for non-local storage of apple software updates? if not, does anyone have any idears?
    d

we were using a hack required for osx server 10.5.x which enabled us to save our apple software updates to our SAN instead of in the default location: /var/db/swupd/
in osx server 10.6, the game has changed. server admin now allows you to specify whatever directory you want!
i saw that, i used that, but i was still using the hack from 10.5.8 (which involved a symlink) to ENSURE that this was the directory. turns out that wasn't needed. and, once removed, we're back up and running again.
cheers to those who wrote and helped,
    thank you.

  • Software Update - file location?

Just curious as to where Software Update stores all of the local files. Just set it up and want to know where to keep an eye on for large files. I found what I think may be it in /library/caches/..... but all the folders say 0 KB, so not sure if thats really it

Anyway to move the download folder to another local drive?
One solution: Do you think I could make the html folder an alias to the local drive I want to store all of the apple downloads?

  • Cannot delete old apple device software update file from trash

I restored a new iPad from an old one and now there is an .ipsw file with the is08 8.0.2 update and I cannot delete it even tried command secure delete and option secure delete. The file is grayed out and says it is in use by another application. Please help me get rid of this.
Oh and not sure this is related but I cannot sync my iPad now, it says error 1723.
    Thanks.

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Where are the software update files located?

Because I get charged for my download traffic (don't ask--one of the drawbacks of living in the country), I set my software update preference to download the latest 10.5.4 update. That way I can then transfer the update file to our other computers. However, I can't find where Apple sticks the file.
    Thanks,
    John

    Hello John,
That ability to "Install and keep package" in Software Update, doesn't work.
It use to be an extremely useful thing, but now no longer works in Leopard. Instead you will have to download the Update from the Apple site and then you will be able to keep it, and only use Software Update to tell you want you need.
In 10.3, not sure about 10.4 I could collect all packages, which I would then burn onto a CD. But alas, no more.

  • Moving directory with Software Update files from one server to another

    Hi guys,
I have recently bought a Mac Mini to move on it my test system Mac OS 10.9 with Server 3.0, running on VM.
    My question is:
Is it possible to move the Software Update packages/directory from one server to another, so I don't need to wait a whole week to have them all downloaded from the Apple servers?
I assume, if replace all the Software update fodder it is not going to work as there are some kind of index files elsewhere that will not accept that change.
I haven’t tried any migration assistant as don’t want to replicate the server.
    Any suggestions, please?

    hi Lucas,
i just stumbled onto this post of yours while searching for solutions for a somehow related issue that's kept me thinking.
your post isn't new, yet it received no answers... maybe you found a solution already.
in case you haven't, a possible hint might come from https://discussions.apple.com/message/20478878#20478878
for the record, i've installed os x server 3.0 on mvrx 10.9 on a 4-year old Intel Core 2 Duo mac mini with 500GB disks.
in my case, it's the almost 200GB of update files wasting what's left of my storage real estate to press for a solution.
tried to do what's suggested here, seems to work fine on my system, too. hope this helps.

  • To where are Software Updater file downloaded?

I have a software package to update on two computers. The computers are the same and I need to update software on both computers. However, where I live we pay for each megabyte downloaded so I would like to update the first computer then copy the update file to the other. Where does the Software updater store the downloaded files so I can get the file after the first computer is updated?

Whew, took me an hour of searching Apple Downloads to +not find it+ via dial-up!
Then via Google through 4 other sites with clues & back to Apple for 4 more 5 minute steps at pages with links loading leads me to this...
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutexpress/index.html
The Resources link on that page leads e to...
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/download/
Where it doesn't mention "Express", but who knows since I don't have a Serial# to sign in with!
Back to *Software Update*, if you choose to "Download only" or possibly "Install & keep Package", the file should be at Library>Packages, but I'm not certain that some of Apple's SWUPDs allow even keeping the PKG.
PS. Even this AD BBS is the absolute slowest loading BBS on the whole internet!

  • Software Update File Size Different than Apple Downloads File Size

    Background:
I am running software update and it retrieves the update for "MacBook, MacBook Pro Software update 1.1" File size is listed as 768K. When I go to the Apple Downloads page for this update, the file size is 979K.
Download ID is 16618 and URl is http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macbookmacbookprosoft wareupdate11.html
    Question:
Is this discrepancy normal based on the way that Software Update calculates file size or should I be concerned? There is no hash to confirm integrity of the file.

File size, and the volume of space it takes up are 2 different things. Space will very from computer to computer. Chances are, the larger the drive the more space it takes up. Reason? The file system (HSF + on macs with Leopard). The file sytem divides the drive into specific number of sections. That number may be 10 M, say. So, even if you have a thumbnail that is 4 kb, it will still require the minimum size of the file system. Make sense? There is a lot of wasted space on very large drives.
Note: Leopard is set up to use a new file system that apple may soon adopt. It will not use the division method HFS + uses, and so will save a lot of space, if adopted.

  • About Apple software update file directory

i want to know where did the Apple Software Update put the update file and data? im using windows 7. i want to delete them as it is no longer use after installed. i just want to make sure they dont grow and grow and eat my hard disk space.

    Hi Bill!
I have done this very thing with SUS due to an internal SD drive that lacks capacity.  in the SUS service in server admin, under Settings, Store Updates In prompt:
What I did is set up the directory structure I wanted (I kept the original structure, var/db/swupd/), I then checked the permissions on the directories and made sure they were set the same, then copied all the data over.  If you leave the directory empty, I believe all the updates will re-download.  This was the easiest service to change data stores for me.  I also did the same for wiki services, and depending on the updates (nothing significant in a while) I would sometimes have to go in and re-correct permissions on the new larger volume.
So you answered your own question on what the restrictions are: size of data/storage location, and permissions.
