Software Update in Mountain Lion

I have an issue with how software update is managed in Mountain Lion and hope someone here might know a way to get around it.  I admit this is a niche problem due to the fact that our home business has four Macs to keep updated.
In Lion software update provided you with a progress bar when it went out to check for new software.  In Lion when new software was available you could click on the Details button and receive information about the program AND its size.
In ML, you are taken to the app store and there is just a spinning sprocket while it checks for new software.  This in itself is not an issue, just a different design.  What is an issue for me is the information provided when you click on the details button.  Using HP Printer Software Update 2.10 as an example, when I asked for details and clicked on "more" it let me to a knowledge base article that spoke of updating printer software.  What is missing is the vital piece about the size of the file to download.   Only when I clicked Update did I discover that the file I was downloading was 107.6 mb.
I do not want to have software downloaded or installed in the background when I am working.   I would like to know the size of the file I am downloading before starting that process since there is only so much bandwidth.   Is there a way to determine the size of the file before I download it on each of the Macs?
I realizle that I can go to Apple's Download page and download the new software manually but that defeats the purpose of the Software update program IMO.
On the good side I note that the size of the download using Software update is a lot smaller (107 mb vs >400mb) than a manual download. Apparently software updates are designed for each specific machine.
Thanks for your advice.
Jay

thanks for answer.
Maybe, I mean the folder /Library/Updates
I think this is the folder where Software Update (App Store) download automatic update  (with Mountain Lion)
my folder contains only dlist and extrainfo file, but not the full file of the notification update
I ask this because I disabled the automatic download so I want to know if some update was downloaded (when the option was enabled)
it seems not

  • Since the last software update for mountain lion I am having a problem when moving screenshots to trash. Now a Finder box appears saying finder wants to make changes and I have to enter my password for every action.

Since the last software update for mountain lion, I am having a problem when trying to remove any screenshots to the trash. A box appears saying "Finder wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this"
I have checked Finder Preferences and cannot find any box that I can 'UNTICK' to resolve this. I sometimes take a lot of screenshots when I am researching something and now find I have to enter my password for every screenshot to be removed to trash.
Anyone got a solution please, Thanks

  • Software update in mountain lion offers updates for iPhoto and iMovie that will not install

Updated my iMac 2011 to Mountain Lion. Software Update now operates through the App Store. Third Party apps are OK but Apple's native Mac apps eg iPhoto, iMovie offer updates for installation that do not install.
Get this error eg for iMovie but similar for iPhoto and maybe others:
"We could not complete your update.  iMovie is already installed on this computer. Choose Software Update from the Apple menu to check for available updates."
If you do as suggested, it reloads App Store software update and goes round again...
If I go to "Check for updates" in the iMovie menu it tells me it's the current version.
"This version of iMovie (9.0.8) is the current version."
The badge showing the count of apps requrining an update is also wrong.

Hi, just wondering, were any of Apple's Apps moved from there default location?

  • HT1338 Receiving Error when I run Software Update in Mountain Lion.

I am receiving the following error when I run software update in OS-X Mountain Lion. The operation couldn’t be completed. (NSURLErrorDomain error -1100.)
Is this a problem with my MBP or is there an issue with the AppStore servers? Is there an alternate way in Mountain Lion to look for updates if the problem is with the AppStore app itself?
    Thank you,

Apparently a server overload > NSURLErrorDomain error -1100
    Try again later.

  • HT1338 How do you ignore unwanted/un-needed software updates in Mountain Lion?

Several software updates come available via the OS X App store, many of which I do not need, as they are related to software or hardware I don't have or use.  Is there a way to ignore them in Mountain Lion?

OK..found another question like mine that already had the answer...problem solved.  Thanks!

  • HT5568 Error with Software Update on Mountain Lion App Store

A software update, of Safari 6.0.2 & iPhoto Update 9.4.2, failed with the error:
    An error has occurred
    This operation couldn't be completed
    (NSURLErrorDomain error -3001.)(102)
Is this my problem or their problem?

Hello - yes, the Software Update function is incorporated to the App Store as Updates. It is somewhere written on the Apple page, forgot where. I also do not want to know :-) As long required and recommended Upgrades will be offered in or another way, i am fine.
I also just installed ML, almost during a coffee break and meeting, and continuosly worked, I am so far fine. One application, MindMap, required Java SE 6. Within 2 minutes it was installed. Need two attempts, maybe caused by overload of system now.
The Indexing took some time, but it was within an hour finished.
So far, I am okay with ML - nothing to complain. Some features will be enabled with iOS6 for the iPad and the integration of different functions into the cloud.

  • HT1338 Software update to Mountain Lion

Hi, I updated my software from 10.6.8 and now I can't start my computer. I get a message HDD damaged click to restart. And the process repeats.

Boot with the Snow Leopard install disc, launch Disk Utility, and repair the disk. If successful, see if it'll boot w/ML. If not, restore your bootable SL backup/clone or Time Machine backup.

  • I recently applied software updates for Mountain Lion (10.8.1) and  9.1.8 to Logic Pro and now Logic Pro is not operating correctly. Has anyone else experienced this same problem. (Mac Pro Desktop, Mountain Lion).

    Need some help.

Thanks. I added the supplemental and it looks like I may be back to normal here. I will have to fully check it out but Logic is opening up correctly and no weirdness so far.

  • I am considering updating to Mountain Lion.  Have checked the website Roar for compatibility with other software; some OK; some have yet to be tested.  When will that testing be done?

No. You will not lose any of the applications and data will be safe.
But make sure that you have working backup. This is very important.
Time Machine is the built-in backup software/application.
    Best.

  • Hello everyone I need help! Why i cant Update to Mountain Lion if Im gonna try to update my Macbook Pro with Mac OS X 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5. It always says "Your Software is up to date" which is only Mac Os X ver. 10.7.5

Not sure what exactly you did (or not), but it looks as if you should attempt doing it all again, only this time all right and by the book. Many millions have done so, and sure it'll work for you as well.
If you've indeed purchased ML already, you'll find it exactly there in the App Store: under Purchases.

  • Updated to mountain lion and now I get continual errors in PS!

I have the latest version of photoshop CC. Since updating to mountain lion 10.8.5 from lion PS CC doesn't work properly. Several of the tools gives me 'unable to use tool due to program error'. This is useless! I have installed the latest version of photoshop CC. It worked fine before. I can't use the eyedropper but the clone tool is fine. The brush tools are fine. Several of the other tools give this error. I can't see why some would work and others don't.
I worked fine in Lion so there is no reason it shouldn't work in mountain lion. It's so frustrating as it means I cannot use the software I've paid for. I updated via the adobe update manager as the CC desktop system doesn't work
    What causes this error message?
Everything is identical to what was there before - late 2011 imac with loads of memory and a wacom bamboo tablet driver with an older graphire tablet. No hardware has changed so it has to be a software error of some kind. The tablet driver is the latest one that works with the tablet I have and that works with mountain lion. I can't alter the version of that.

I suspect either preferences restore or troubleshoot permissions with new Admin account will solve or give us more clues.
