Software Update just wiped my BB

Rather frustratingly, I have just ran the software update for my Blackberry Curve 8900, which has completely de-branded my phone, and wiped everything. Now all I have is a menu with a list of my applications and options (that it won't let me use) with "Blackberry Software 5.0.(something?).31" (or something similar to that) at the top. I've tried restoring my device with no luck. Any ideas of how I can reverse this?

  • Software Update completely wiped out computer

I clicked on automatic software updates before I went to bed the other night, and now my screen only display the set-up assistant, much like I had just installed Leopard. But, even following the prompts, I am stuck in a loop in set-up assistant. I am afraid to re-install because I am afraid it will wipe my hard drive out. Any advice?

  • OTA BB10 Software Update Just Received

Just got an notification on my Z10 of a software update being available for the OS 10.0.9.348.  I checked the notification but all it said was that if was for applications and was 7MB in size.
I downloaded it and it was installed but still no clues as to what was updated, anyone know what the update may have been and more importantly what it fixed ?

I believe that these are updates to carrier specific pushed apps.

  • Software update just doesn't work either way!what should i do?

hi everyone!i go to system preferences-then software update-then i push the button check now and while it's checking for updates, suddenly it stops and a message says that "the application system preferences stopped unexpectedly". i also try to update from the "software update" shortcut, but i get the same message. At the end i tried to update fron the apple site, the update downloaded, but when i tried to install it, it can't find a volume to install at my mac os.could someone help me please?I m using mac a while ago and maybe i m just doing something wrong.

Boot with your install disk, select your language, and, when the menu bar pops up, select Utilities->Disk Utility->repair the disk and permissions. Report back with any error messages. Once Disk Utility finishes, quit it, and select Utilities->Startup Disk->click on Restart.

  • 10.4.10 Software Update just crashed my iMac

iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   Help! I just tried the software update for 10.4.10 it came up with two installs which both required a restart. Once it had finished downloading it then restart my iMac but it won't move beyond the grey screen with the dark grey apple logo. Have waited 30 mins and still stuck. Tried turning off and back on again and still won't budge beyond this screen.
How do get my iMac back!
All help urgently and gratefully received.
    Richard...

There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10.
It is not recommended to use the System Updater in the Apple menu for major updates. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them 10.4.10. compliant. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.

  • Download update just wiped out my data!

I just downloaded an update to my Palm Zire, and now all of my data has been erased on my computer.  The data, thankfully, is still on my handheld, and even when I try to sync the two the data doesn't transfer to my computer.  Help!  This is my business diary and I'm desperate.  Thanks.

I have synced my handheld to my computer for the last 8 years.  It's just that since I downloaded the updated program now the sync won't transfer my information to my computer.
P.S.  I just discovered that after the sync it says on the upper right of my hand held that Chrissy Harrison is the user.  That's one of the two names that show up in my computer version of Palm as a user.  The other one is just Palm.  When I click on log records for syncs, it shows that Chrissy Harrison has received 3 updates today -- the ones I've tried and failed to convey the data in my hand held.  It appears I might have to change the name on either my hand held or my computer, but I don't know how.
P.P.S.  I've never heard of that att.net email address; it just shows up on my hand held.  So I'm not too worried.

iOS 5.1.1 Software Update - just tried to update and it didn't work! Got to the final stages and was presented with error 1602! My screen now has the frozen image of the itunes logo and usb thing. Happened once before - funnily enough when doing an update back in November - I had to visit an Apple store to have the phone restored. Would appreciate any advice as I would like to avoid another trip to the apple store.

    found the real problem.
In my laptop where it couldn't detect the iphone and ipad, this folder is missing:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
The ipad was wrongly using a microsoft driver.
I found the correct drivers in:
    C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\usbaapl64.inf_amd64_neutral_c111a aecb61e9a2b
    Copy the contents to
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
After that, I had to update the driver for Ipad in device manager.
Ipad was found under: "Removable Devices", as a storage device.
Once that is fixed, itunes can detect ipad, and I can restore it.
Apple should really look into ensuring that folder doesn't go missing during itunes update process.

  • Just released ! New Software Update - Java 5   Any suggestions?

My software update just advised me that there is a Java 5 upgrade. Any suggestions on this upgrade? Any special settings to Browsers after upgrade recommended? Thanks ! Geof

    Just some more info,
Apple doesn't hasn't put out much info on the new Java 5. MacWorld/MacCentral has an small article on Java 5, but it doesn't say much. The link below will bring you to the Java 5 article at MacWorld:

    Here is some more info:

It doesn't seem to be a necessity. I have also heard something about Google switching to the new Java but I don't know anything about it.

  • After installing software update and restart, mail no longer opens.

After I installed a software update on 9-20-12, I got a message that "this version of Mail doesn't work with Mac OS X...open Mail from the applications folder."  I tried this, but nothing happens when I click on the different looking mail icon.  I dragged it to the desktop, was asked if I wanted to replace an older copy, so I said yes...now the icon is there to click on--nothing happens.  This was not a major software update, just the updates that pop up periodically for software already installed.  I have had 10.6.8 since computer was purchased...just a software update, no new version of anything, yet now my mail won't open.  Any ideas?  I have a backup from about 3 weeks ago...can I use this to uninstall this terrible update?  It was a security update...secured my mail (from me!!).

Your Apple-installed Applications need to stay in the top-level Applications folder. If you have moved them, they will not be updated properly and may even be disabled or trashed.
Find the Mail Application, and be sure it is back in /Applications folder. Make sure there are no duplicates in other folders.
If it is still not working, you will need to run the Security Update (manually).
If it is gone, you will need to run the Combo update to install it again.

  • Why does Software Update want to install ProKit Update when I don't have any of the listed apps?

Software Update just prompted me to install ProKit Update 7.0.  I don't have any of the applications listed in the description.  I searched for each with Spotlight just to make sure.  My Macbook has only a clean install of Snow Leopard, Microsoft Office 2008, and Xcode 4.0.2.  Why am I being prompted to install this update?
Extracted from the description: This update is recommended for users of Final Cut Pro, Motion, Soundtrack Pro, DVD Studio Pro, iPhoto, Aperture, Final Cut Express, Logic Pro, MainStage, Logic Express and iAd Producer.

    Linc Davis wrote:
It doesn't check whether any of those applications are installed. All Macs come with iPhoto. You may have removed it, but SU doesn't know that.
I do not have iPhoto installed and it was never installed.  iPhoto is part of iLife, which is on disc #2.  I slicked the disk and did a clean install of Snow Leopard using only disc #1.  I am surprised that Software Update doesn't check what is installed so it knows what update to install, I thought that was the whole point of Software Update.  It seems to know what hardware drivers are installed and will only install updates for those specific drivers.  But fine with me, I will install that update.

  • I can't do software updates on my MAC G4

For over 6 months I have not been able to do software updates on my stand alone MAC G4.
When I click the "install" button I just get that colorful beachball and the software update just "hanges". Also, if I try to "uncheck" some of the update components (i.e., for ipod)again it hangs.
I had a tech work on my system in August. He ended up doing a update with the disks he brought and after that I was able to use the update once or twice, but it's back to freezing againg.
I even tried to update manuall (i.e. downloading the update to my desktop and then install) - still no luck, as the install just hung.
Can anyone give me some help or insight????
    Thanks!

I tried to do what you suggested but I can't get beyond clicking on the "Activity Monitor" that I've located in my UTILITIES folder. I double click on the "Activity Monitor" icon and it appears in my DOCK but no menus show up to allow me to go beyond this point. It's as if it just makes the icon active so it appears in the DOCK but no program with drop-down menus actually start. I don't see anything that says "Monitor" or "Show Activity Monitor" or "%cpu". What am I doing wrong?
The system is now starting to do some other things (i.e., crashing when I try to print from Illustrator, not allowing me to burn CD's) so I'm mentally preparing myself to re-format the hard drive and re-install all the software in hopes of eradicating this and any other potential problems!

  • Run software update in non-admin account?

I did some searching through past posts, but the most recent one I found was several years old.
Is there any way to run Software Update automatically in a non-admin account?  I run in a non-admin account unless there's some task that really needs admin privileges to complete, for security purposes, but having Software Update not run automatically is rather suboptimal for security.
So, is there any way to get Software Update to check for updates automatically from a non-admin account? (I'm not averse to using the crontab or launchd, if necessary—I've never done it before, but given instructions, I'm sure I could figure it out.
    Thanks in advance!

Did some research on this the other day, to see if i could get Software Update to run in the middle of the night like Windows can do.
Software Update requires Root powers, so when you give it your Admin Password your opening a sudo window of 5 minutes for it to complete it's task.
Software Update doesn't check for updates while in Standard User becuase Standard Users supposedly can't do anything about it anyway and it would be a obvious distraction. "Mommy the computer....!!!"
Apple should have a option in Software update preferences to let certain Standard Users know a Software Update is ready just for the purpose your explaining. I run in Standard as well.
I ran some Software Update commands via the Terminal for a launchd just to see what I could do.
Apprantly one can DOWNLOAD updates automatically with launchd in Admin, but not install them because of the need for sudo.
I just misssed a perfect opoortunity (todays update) to run a launchd to do automatic downloads of Software update, then see how to go about installing them afterwards. So fsck me, I'll have to wait now. (unless i use my other machine! ahhh!!)
Anyway the program you want is this little gem: Lingon
it's on Sourceforge (grab the image)
Ok so that takes care of the Software update downloads (man softwareupdate in Terminal for commands)
    /usr/sbin/softwareupdate --download --all
Will do the automatic downloads, now it's just a script away to let you know ( a nice pop up window) that you have something in your folder where the Software Update just downloaded into.
That's the next question is where that is and how to run it.

  • HT4561 Has anyone had trouble updating from 10.6 install discs to the combo 10.6.8 v1.1 using software update?

I've been having all manner of issues with my system, seemingly out of the blue. I just had a third party install a new HDD for me, and I used my snow leopard install disc (the one I bought many years ago, right after it launched), and when I tried to run the software update and install four updates all together, I got a notice that the file didn't download properly and may be corrupted. I'm wondering if this could have caused my system crash after the last clean install.
I'm downloading manually instead of using whatever is in software update just to be safe this time, but I was wondering if anyone had a similar experience?

It's interesting that you were connected via ethernet yet still had a similar issue. I wonder if perhaps our hardware issues that prompted the clean install may have been similar?
When I attempted to run software update again, it seemed to think that it had completed the download for the 10.6.8.v1.1 update, even though it listed it at over 1Gig, and had "completed" after mere seconds. I know my wifi setup isn't THAT good, and even if it were, I've never seen a wireless connection allow for download speeds of that magnitude.
I wonder if there is something missing from the original install discs that causes trouble with network connectivity? This is conjecture, I really don't have a solid working knowledge of the Mac OS X network tools. When i downloaded the intaller package from the website it seemed to resolve all my issues.
My clean install was done on a brand new HDD with a new partition, my unit seems to be functioning normally (for) now. Fingers crossed...I'm a teacher and my system crashed the day before labour day, taking with it a LOT of things I had prepared, and not backed up due to my foolish weekly backup schedule on Time Machine.
Thanks all for the suggestions and the help, interesting things to discuss!
