Software update - mail, safari & iphoto won't load

I am having a problem after trying to update safari yesterday. The update failed for some reason and when I restarted this morning I could not load mail, safari or iphoto but ical, address book and firefox (and other non ilife programs) load up as normal.
The standard reaction when I click the icon on the dock is for the icon to bounce once and then nothing. I have tried opening from the Apps folder but no difference. What can I do to sort it out. Any help much appreciated,
thanks

roop,
If you updated Safari using Apple's Software Update than it may have installed the wrong version for your computer as a number of users reported in various forums. On MacInTouch user Tom Freridge stated:
+I believe there are two different Safari installers, one for PPC cpu and one for Intel cpu, and Software Update may not be choosing the correct version.+
+I'm running 10.4.11 on a PPC. When I installed Safari 3.1 via Software Updater, it failed just as others as have mentioned. I trashed it, reinstalled 3.04, then went to Apple.com and downloaded the installer to my desktop. When the dmg file unstuffs, there were actually two installers, one for PPC cpu and one for Intel cpu.+
+I installed the security update first (which wasn't available on Software Update when I first updated to Safari 3.1), restarted the computer, fixed permissions, then installed Safari from the PPC installer on my desktop and fixed permission again. Now everything seems to work fine.+
If you don't have Safari 3.0.4, then I suggest you delete the 3.1 receipt and the path to that is HD/Library/Receipts/Safari31UpdUniv.pkg or Safari31UpdPPC.pkg as the case may be. Then download Safari 3.1 from Apple.com to your desktop. Launch Disk Utilities (in the Utilities folder) and Repair Disk Permissions. Next, open the downloaded Safari.dmg, double click on the PPC version and follow the prompts. Afterwards, repair disk permissions again.
Hope this helps.

It's a problem with Gmail. There is another thread discussing it, but most would rather whine than try to fix it.
Nobody has figured out what is causing it, but there have been various suggestions.
One was to display the All Mail folder if you've hidden it.
You can delete by opt- delete. I think that will delete it immediately.
Another person looked in the user/Library/Mail/V2/ folder.  He had duplicate account folders, having a sequence digit suffix.  He deleted the duplicates and it fixed things.

  • Okay since last apple software update my safari will not open youtube, yahoo or google

Okay since last apple software update my safari will not open youtube, yahoo or google, an error message comes up saying safari cannot connect to the server.  Can anyone help me with this please?

    Hi Joshua ..
Check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. If the box next to:  Open in 32 bit mode  is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari to test.
If that wasn't the issue, try using OpenDNS.
Use OpenDNS for better speed, more security, prevents the, "can't connect to server" issue, includes anti phishing filters, prevents browser re directs, and it's free.
Open System Preferences / Preferences then select the Network tab. Click the Advanced tab then click the DNS tab.
    Click +
Enter these addresses exactly as you see them here.

  • How to opt out of Apple Software Update's Safari installation

I do not have Safari installed on my computer, and I have no interest in installing it or switching to it. However, the Apple Software Updater displays Safari as a selected option every time it runs. I can unselect the option to install Safari, but I don't see any way to remove Safari from the list entirely so that Software Update doesn't keep pestering me about installing Safari every few days. Surely there must be some way to opt out of installing Safari short of uninstalling Software Update and never using it again?

That answer really does not deserve a "solved" star, as we get nagged again for every update of Safari. The ignore "trick" is IMHO merely an inadequate workaround for a nuisance that should not exist.
ASU should UPDATE not shove software I or rather, my userbase does not have installed, down our throats.
Apple should at least have the decency to NOT have Safari Pre-checked in ASU. Yes, M$ has new software in Wondows Update as well (e.g. Silverlight), but at least it's an opt-in update, while Apple force-feeds us Safari which I find beyond annoying.
If M$ would do the same with the next version if IE on Macs, Mac users would scream so loud you would be able to hear it on the ISS.

  • When I start safari it won't load the screen.

When I go to start safari it won't load.   The address bar lights up about a 1\3rd of the way and then just sits there.  If I restart my computer it will work for a time but eventually refers back to the same behavior.   I have tried reseting safari, I have tried to empty cache without success.   Please help

    Hi..
Try here >  Safari 5.0.1 or later: Slow or partial webpage loading, or webpage cannot be found
One of the suggestions at that link is to try OpenDNS. It's very easy to setup.
Open System Preferences / Preferences then select the Network tab. Click the Advanced tab then click the DNS tab.
    Click +
Enter these addresses exactly as you see them here.
    208.67.222.222
    Click +
    208.67.220.220
    Then click OK.
    Try Safari.
If that didn't help, all you have to do is go back to the DNS tab and delete the addresses.
If nothing above helped, from your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Security tab. Deselect:  Enable plug-ins
Quit thren relaunch Safari. If that helped, you need to troubleshoot third party add ons >  Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

You can't. It's now integrated with the URL bar. It's a search/URL combo.

  • Safari, Mail, iTunes, iCal won't load in Tiger 10.4.11

This is issue started yesterday after a reboot. For a couple of weeks I have tried to install the latest version of Safari without luck, as the installer crashes and "quits unexpectedly". I just ignored it, but now none of the above programs will launch. Then it is an issue!
Tried to boot in Safe Mode (holding shift down in the boot process), but it somehow doesn't really boot at all then.... ?? Keeps turning of....
Through Firefox (which works fine) i downloaded a fresh copy if the latest Combo update. Can't install that either, as it crashes, just as with Safari updates.
This really shouldn't happen on a Mac. This is Windows problems!
About 12 months ago I gave this beautiful old iBook to my wife, for her to use, when I myself upgraded to MacBook Pro (running Leopard 10.5.7). Sounds like the Hard Drive might be gong out.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

  • Updated to 10.5.8 with software update; Mail won't launch on G5 Power PC

After re-booting I get the message: "You cannot use this version of the application Mail with this version of Mac OS X"
I have installed all software updates that are current. Everything else seems to be working fine. Ideas?

Interesting, I never see a COMBO update via SU, but never miss installing them when they first come out. It might be that it didn't do its job properly. Give the manually downloaded one a go and also check what Ernie recommended. I don't use Mail, Eudora's my mail client, except to occasionally check that it's working. So far it does without any errors. Don't forget to repair permissions and restart after installing it.

  • IPhoto won't load albums or import

When I open iPhoto it says loading pictures but they never load. It just continues. I've moved all the images to the desktop and tried importing them but it keeps giving me a message saying that is can't recognise some of the data even though the images were working for months.
Pictures won't import from my camera either and it never had a problem previously (it's a Concord 4060AF)

First here are two Apple KB documents that you should be aware of, particularly the second one:
    iPhoto Library Description
Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder
How did you move those files to the desktop? Did you move the entire iPhoto library folder to the desktop, relaunch iPhoto and then drag that old library folder into the open iPhoto window? If that's what you did, you're getting all of the original files, edited files and thumbnail files imported as normal files and the files that you're getting the message about are non image files.
What you want to do is
1 - move any iPhoto library folder out of the pictures folder. If your original iPhoto Library folder is on the desktop then trash the one currently in the Pictures folder.
2 - launch iPhoto and create a new library.
3 - using the File->Add to Library menu option, select your original iPhoto Library folder and start the import process that way.
You should now get only the original files and the edited files, no thumbnail files. Also you may retain some roll organization. When you're satisfied that you have all your photos in the new library you can trash the old one.
For the record, did you do any moving of files within your original library folder before this happen or run any software updates just before?

  • Safari pages won't load since Mavericks upgrade

Installed Mavericks a few days ago on my iMac and some really annoying bugs have been introduced to Mail (7.3) and Safari (7.0.6). I can't automatically add multiple addresses to emails anymore using the space bar; I have to manually type out certain addresses, add commas, etc. Certain webpages, including youtube and google, won't load on Safari. Chat support had me repair permissions with disk utility, clear cookies and reset safari, but none worked. It was also suggested that I do an SMC reset, a PRAM reset, and a safe reboot. I haven't done any of these, basically because I'm nervous about introducing any more wonkiness that I can't undo. I've been reading about similar problems with Mavericks for months now (I only upgraded because I needed it for Final Cut) , but I never see any solutions. Can anyone help me???  Thanks.

Go step by step and test.
    1. Power cycle
Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.
Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly.
         It will take a   while.
         Restart the computer.
         Start up in Safe Mode
         http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11212
    2 Empty Caches
        1. Safari > Preference > Advanced
Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.
        2. Quit Safari if open.
Option click the "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.
        Select "Library" and then "Caches".
        Look for the folder 'com.apple.Safari"
Right click "com.apple.Safari" and select "Move to Trash"
        Relaunch Safari.
    3. Turn off Extensions if any, and launch Safari.
        Safari > Preferences > Extensions
    4. Remove all third party addons, plugins and anti-virus software
        Run EtreCheck .
        https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6173
    5. Deselect Proxies if selected.
System Preference > Network > Advanced  > Proxies Tab
Under "Select Protocol", uncheck any box if selected.
       Click "OK" then  "Apply"
    Best.

Mail has slowed tremendously since downloading the 2.0.1 software update.

Phone mail and icon/application mail communicate VERY slowly. MobileMe mail seems largely unaffected.

  • Photos saved from Mail to iPhoto won't display

I recently converted my niece from a PC to an new 14 inch iBook. She has 10.4.2 and all the latest software updates. When she clicks on the "Save" button in Mail her photos do not appear in iPhoto. After proving to myself this was really happening, I found the missing photos. They are being saved at the root level in the iPhoto folder-not in the respective photo folders. I suspect that this is the problem but I don't know why or how to fix it. I tried saving photos from Mail on a couple of other Macs at my house and the feature seems to work fine.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Hi Joseph, the feature works fine for me too.
the only info I could find was this.
"Add to iPhoto" button in Mail and keyword search in spotlight don't work
If she does have the latest iPhoto, then all I can suggest is to use Disk Utility to repair permissions. If that doesn't work, then just have her drag the images in the email to the desktop, then import them into iPhoto from there.
