Software update not checking automatically

I recently noticed that SU hasn't been checking automatically for any updates although it used to on my PB G4...
Thoughts?

Is your internet connection stable?
You could try trashing the software update preferences to see if that helps. The one you need to move is found in Macintosh HD>Library>Preferences and the file name is com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist.
You should restart your computer after this; then reset the preferences you want.

  • Software Update Not Working Automatically

Since I upgraded my OS X from Tiger to Leopard, Software Update could not have been working automatically even if it is set to check updates daily or weekly, and the machine is turned on at the scheduled time with an Internet connection. Well, by clicking on "Check Now," I can manually check to see if any updates are available, though.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Thank you for your response, Ahsan.
But, Software Update should run automatically according to your setting, whether or not any updates are available. If nothing is available, Software Update displays a "Last check" date and time, and says, "No updates are available" or something like that. In fact, when I just manually hit "Check Now" button, Software Update did find "Time Machine and AirPort Updates v1.0" published on 3/19/08 while I had set it in the preference "weekly" almost two weeks before.
    Strange, isn't it?

  • Software Update Not Checking Daily

I've tried deleting the Software Update.plist files in Cache and Library folders and still no dice.
Software Update does not check for updates daily.
I have to manually click Check Now each time I want an update.
    Was working fine under Leopard.
    Any ideas?

    1. Repair disk using your install DVD.
    2. Try [resetting your PRAM/NVRAM|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US]. If everything isn't fixed, then follow the [steps here including resetting your SMC if necessary|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411].
    3. Reinstall (or install for the first time) the .6.1 and .6.2 updates by [downloading and installing the combo updater|http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959].
    4. Reinstall 10.6 using you Sno install DVD by installing Sno over Sno using the upgrade method. Test your system after returning to 10.6. If is good there, then you may not want to install the updates, .6.1 and .6.2. But, if you do, then use the combo updater again.

  • Software Update Not Working - Stuck at "Checking for New Software"

    Hey Everybody,
I have recently been experiencing problems with my Software Update. After I open it, it gets stuck at the screen and times-out after a while asking me to check my network to see if I'm connected to the Internet. My internet is working fine yet the Software Update is still not working. I have tried removing the Software Update pdlist and trying to change the cache.db yet nothing is working. I have run the verify disk and repair disk utility with no result. Anyone got any other ideas other then a clean install?

See if the following fixes the problem:
    Fix for Software Update
See Troubleshooting Automatic Software Update in Mac OS X.
    Delete the following files:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.xxx.plist
    "xxx" is a number.
    /Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate/ (delete entire folder)

  • Automatic software updates not working

I have software updates enabled (check, download, install) but it doesn't work. There is no reminder and new updates are not installed. So I need to check manually. I've enabled and disabled the function to no avail. The only thing I can think of is I have two apple ID's (unfortunately by mistake )
Are there more with the same issue?

Try downloading the update & then installing it while started in Safe mode

  • Why is the software update not showing up in general settings?

Why does my software update not show up in general settings?

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 7.1.1. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.
You can no longer update to iOS 6.x, or down grade the iOS.

iOS: How to update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4623
If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and antivirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 7.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.
How to Upgrade to iOS 7
The iOS 7.0 update requires around 2.5 GB of storage space, so if your iPad is almost full, you may need to clear up some space. You can check your available space in Settings -> General -> Usage.
There are two ways to upgrade to iOS 7: You can use your Wi-Fi connection, or you can connect your iPad to your PC and update through iTunes. We'll go over each method.
    To upgrade using Wi-Fi:
Note: If your iPad's battery is under 50%, you will want to plug it into your charger while performing the update.
    Go into the iPad's Settings.
Locate and tap "General" from the menu on the left.
The second option from the top is "Software Update". Tap this to move into the update settings.
Tap "Download and Install". This will start the upgrade, which will take several minutes and will reboot your iPad during the process. If the Download and Install button is grayed out, trying clearing up some space. The space required by the update is mostly temporary, so you should gain most of it back after iOS 7 is installed.
Once the update is installed, you may have to run through the initial steps of setting up your iPad again. This is to account for new features and settings.
    To upgrade using iTunes:
First, connect your iPad to your PC or Mac using the cable provided when you purchased your device. This will allow iTunes to communicate with your iPad.
You will also need the latest version of iTunes. Don't worry, you will be prompted to download the latest version when you launch iTunes. Once it installs, you may be asked to setup iCloud by logging into your iTunes account. If you have a Mac, you may be prompted on whether or not you want to enable the Find my Mac feature.
Now you are ready to begin the process:
If you upgraded iTunes earlier, go ahead and launch it. (For many, it will launch automatically when you plug in your iPad.)
Once iTunes is launched, it should automatically detect that a new version of the operating system exists and prompt you to upgrade to it. Choose Cancel. Before updating, you will want to manually sync your iPad to make sure everything is up to date.
After canceling the dialog box, iTunes should automatically sync with your iPad.
If iTunes doesn't automatically sync, you can manually do it by selecting your iPad within iTunes, clicking on the File menu and choosing Sync iPad from the list.
After your iPad has been synced to iTunes, select your iPad within iTunes. You can find it on the left side menu under Devices.
From the iPad screen, click on the Update button.
After verifying that you want to update your iPad, the process will begin. It takes a few minutes to update the operating system during which time your iPad may reboot a few times.
After updating, you may be asked a few questions when your device finally boots back up. This is to account for new settings and features.
     Cheers, Tom

    Un-install according to the developer's un-install instructions.
You do not need to use cleaning programs. They can destroy your computer operation as they may already have done.
    CleanMyMac - Uninstall
    CleanMyMac2 Un-install
After un-installing, run this program to make sure you got all the pieces.
    EasyFind – Spotlight Replacement
    Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.appstore.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Software Update NOT WORKING (Snow Leopard)
Hi, I am currently using Snow Leopard 10.6 on my iMac. I opened iTunes and was told there was an update available so I clicked the button to download it. This obviously opened up the 'download' screen with blue bar. The blue bar does not move and the message comes up that the download failed. I have tried troubleshooting, but the message I get is that I am not connected to the internet - which I am.
    Please help.

Check your iTunes version, it's reporting v10.6.3 here on 10.6.8 and no updates required.
You should be able to download it from here

  • Mac Book Software Update not working, iTune will not update because of that, iPhone 4 won't connect to iTunes because iTunes is not updated. Mac v.10.5.8, iTunes v.10.5.2, iPhone4 iOS 6

Mac Book Software Update not working (Software Update does not have any new software for your computer at this time), my current MacBook version is 10.5.8.
As a result I can't update iTunes, version 10.5.2  (This software requiers Mac OS X version 10.6.8 or later)
Now when I connect my iPhone 4, version iOS 6 iTunes can't connect to iPhone (The iPhone "XXXXX's iPhone" cannot be used because it requiers iTunes version 10.6.3 or later.)
so in a nutshell can't use iphone 4, because iTune is not updated and will not  update because Mac Book is not up to date and will not update either.

Software Update wont check for new software.

No - I'm on 10.6.8 and it functions normally, though there are now very few actual updates. If there are no updates the progress bar should still complete in around 3 minutes and announce that there are no updates, so you've got something hanging somewhere. If it's still stuck hit command-option (alt)- escape, select Software Update and hit Force Quit. You could try it again (I should reboot first) in case it's a one-off glitch, but if it still sticks force quit it again.
The best suggestion I can offer is to apply the combo updater anyway in the hope that it may over-write whatever is causing the problem.

  • SOFTWARE UPDATE NOT WORKING ON Version 10.6.8

    Hi ,
I have a Macbook Pro - running on OS X - Version 10.6.8 .  When I check for software updates , it checks and shows me 13 pending updates . I chose the 'Install and Update' option , It restarts my computer and asks for my password and takes me back to the usual homescreen within seconds. If I check for software updates , it shows the same 13 updates pending , and seems like no software was updated. I have downloaded 'Apple Software Installer Update 1.0 , but no help.
    Please help !
    Thanks .

This is the same exact problem as the first poster. I keep getting this same window. I must've run software update five time, and I get the same thing. Any help would be most welcomed because I can't figure this one out. I didn't find any answers for this in the linked post either. This can't be a coincidance.

    Yes.

No (at least, I can't think of one that has automatically run). Usually Software Update will download an updater that you then need to run separately. Usually the updaters will be installed to the Utilities folder ready for you to use.
