Software Update not responding

Software Update is not responding.  Every time I try to open software update, it gives me the spinning wheel, and doesn't progress.  Eventually, it tells me that App Store is not responding, and I have to force quit the app store.  I tried going through the Terminal, and nothing happened after I typed the command (using sudo) and entered my password.  I'm also having trouble installing programs using OS X's installer app, and I'm wondering if these problems might be related.

Try this:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

    Un-install according to the developer's un-install instructions.
You do not need to use cleaning programs. They can destroy your computer operation as they may already have done.

    EasyFind – Spotlight Replacement
    Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.appstore.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Snow Leopard is a paid upgrade. http://support.apple.com/kb/sp575 Call Apple to buy Snow Leopard. Then, make a backup, insert the DVD and upgrade. When it finishes, open  > Software Update

  • Why is the software update not showing up in general settings?

Why does my software update not show up in general settings?

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 7.1.1. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.
You can no longer update to iOS 6.x, or down grade the iOS.

iOS: How to update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4623
If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and antivirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 7.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.
How to Upgrade to iOS 7
The iOS 7.0 update requires around 2.5 GB of storage space, so if your iPad is almost full, you may need to clear up some space. You can check your available space in Settings -> General -> Usage.
There are two ways to upgrade to iOS 7: You can use your Wi-Fi connection, or you can connect your iPad to your PC and update through iTunes. We'll go over each method.
    To upgrade using Wi-Fi:
Note: If your iPad's battery is under 50%, you will want to plug it into your charger while performing the update.
    Go into the iPad's Settings.
Locate and tap "General" from the menu on the left.
The second option from the top is "Software Update". Tap this to move into the update settings.
Tap "Download and Install". This will start the upgrade, which will take several minutes and will reboot your iPad during the process. If the Download and Install button is grayed out, trying clearing up some space. The space required by the update is mostly temporary, so you should gain most of it back after iOS 7 is installed.
Once the update is installed, you may have to run through the initial steps of setting up your iPad again. This is to account for new features and settings.
    To upgrade using iTunes:
First, connect your iPad to your PC or Mac using the cable provided when you purchased your device. This will allow iTunes to communicate with your iPad.
You will also need the latest version of iTunes. Don't worry, you will be prompted to download the latest version when you launch iTunes. Once it installs, you may be asked to setup iCloud by logging into your iTunes account. If you have a Mac, you may be prompted on whether or not you want to enable the Find my Mac feature.
Now you are ready to begin the process:
If you upgraded iTunes earlier, go ahead and launch it. (For many, it will launch automatically when you plug in your iPad.)
Once iTunes is launched, it should automatically detect that a new version of the operating system exists and prompt you to upgrade to it. Choose Cancel. Before updating, you will want to manually sync your iPad to make sure everything is up to date.
After canceling the dialog box, iTunes should automatically sync with your iPad.
If iTunes doesn't automatically sync, you can manually do it by selecting your iPad within iTunes, clicking on the File menu and choosing Sync iPad from the list.
After your iPad has been synced to iTunes, select your iPad within iTunes. You can find it on the left side menu under Devices.
From the iPad screen, click on the Update button.
After verifying that you want to update your iPad, the process will begin. It takes a few minutes to update the operating system during which time your iPad may reboot a few times.
After updating, you may be asked a few questions when your device finally boots back up. This is to account for new settings and features.
     Cheers, Tom

Software Update NOT WORKING (Snow Leopard)
Hi, I am currently using Snow Leopard 10.6 on my iMac. I opened iTunes and was told there was an update available so I clicked the button to download it. This obviously opened up the 'download' screen with blue bar. The blue bar does not move and the message comes up that the download failed. I have tried troubleshooting, but the message I get is that I am not connected to the internet - which I am.
    Please help.

Check your iTunes version, it's reporting v10.6.3 here on 10.6.8 and no updates required.
You should be able to download it from here

I went into terminal and type "softwareupdate -l" and it returned "A server with the specified hostname could not be found"

Your DNS forwarding isn't turned on so the server can't get outside. No resolution for Apples' Software Update server.

  • SharePoint Server 2013 farm software updates not available in SCCM

At my current customer, we are currently switching over to SCCM for all Software Update Management.
For now, the only issue we are experiencing is that we do not receive SharePoint updates on our SharePoint Server 2013 farm. With WSUS we can detect these, but they are not listed in SCCM. We sync directly with Windows Update.
It are specifically the updates that are marked as "farm-deployment", as you can see in example in this image.:
    http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gI8Ew7RlY0g/VPqM0QUn6oI/AAAAAAAAIDQ/S1Ufp0x-mSU/s1600/windows%2Bupdate%2Bincludes%2Bsharepoint%2B2013%2Bpatches.png
In the SUP properties, we have enabled the Office 2013 product and all classifications besides "Tools".
    Am I missing something?

I could see these SharePoint updates in my SCCM console.
N.B. the question was about "farm-deployment" updates specifically.
Can you please post a screen-shot showing these updates in the SCCM-console?

  • Software Update not working due to a "networking error"

Hopefully this post is in the correct forum. In trying to run Software Update, I am getting a networking error ("A networking error has occured: time out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again."). I can get on the network just fine via Firefox, and my Mobile Me account is syncing to my Address Book and iCal. However, Safari, Mail, and Software Update can't seem to connect. I ran Repair Permissions and Repair Disk (from the 10.5 Install disc), but these did not solve the problem. I also downloaded and ran the 10.5.4 Combo; it appeared to run fine. But subsequently running the Security Update 2008-005 and trying to reinstall Safari failed (both directly downloaded from Apple). Security Update won't let me select the computer hard drive, and Safari tells me that OS 10.5.2 or higher is required (even though I have 10.5.4 installed). I also tried running Software Update from other profiles on the computer to no avail.
Any thoughts as to what is going on here? I'd prefer not to have to reinstall the OS from scratch, but I'm running out of ideas.
    Thanks!

Select the clone tool and try a tool re-set.

  • Software updates not working (sort of)

    Hi everyone.
I have an OS X Server (10.6.7) running Software Update 4.0.6 (470) the Server Admin is version 10.6.5 and I have this server to manage several other Macs in my company. The issue I have is (besides the fact I know very little about Macs) since it has been built I am struggling to manage the updates it sends out.
When I go to get the updates from a client machine it can see my update server and can retrieve the updates but what I am finding odd is that I cannot see anywhere the location to approve these...
In Server Admin if I go to Software Update I assume I should be able to see the updates in the Updates tab but it is empty and there is a notification that it cannot connect to Apple. Which is weird as the server can check for updates itself locally, it also must be pushing them out as when I go to check for updates on a client machine it is definitely pointing to the update server...
If I look in the log I can see lots of lines about "successfully downloading product" but nowhere can i see these updates to approve or reject any. This is important as I want to deny programs being updates that I have removed- for example Chess etc...
If anyone has any ideas I would be very grateful.
    Many thanks
    Rob

    Hi,
first of all, update your Server Admin Tools.
Check if after doing that, you can see the updates with checkboxes under th2 Updates section of the sw update menu of Server Admin.
Then, go to the location where the software update service has its files (in Finder, select "go to folder" and then - if you haven't changed anything - go to /var/db/swupd/ and check the contents or the folder size... you should see several gigs worth of updates.
If not, then you probably changed the path to where the updates are being downloaded and maybe the permissions to that location are off.
Anyway, when you start sw update on a client, does it show the dns name of your server in the top of the window?

    Hi all,
I have been having problems with my Software Update in that I am getting an error message saying "Software Update could not expand the package correctly". This has most recently happened with iPod Updater 2006-03-23.

Thanks for the continued support and sorry for the delay in reply. As I said I am more than a bit inept on technical issues so I am afraid I have no idea how to repair my permissions.
Tried all the other fixes and no luck. I did try and run the update from the .pkg files in the trash folder (moved automatically by Updater when it did not work) and when it comes to selecting a destination the hard drive is nowhere to be found (i.e. there is no destination to select!). Here below are the lines from the Console since the last restart:
