Software Update Not Working -- need help!

Hello everyone. Was wondering if anyone could help me with an annoying problem I've now had for several weeks. My new MacBook Pro purchased in July, 2010 as well as an older iMac both will not update software automatically. In Software Update, updates are set to "daily," however the last time checked is when I did it manually. I've now tried deleting preference files in my user as well as system Library folders for Software Update and even reinstalling OS10.6. However, something must be corrupted in my user profile because it still will not perform checks automatically. They work fine when done manually. If I create a new test user with admin privileges, automatic updates work just fine. That is why I believe something is corrupting it for my specific user (Intego VirusBarrier?? Parallels?? MobileMe??). I've checked all the logs and reports and can't find any clues as to what's going on.
Anyone have ideas? Please help! Thanks.

OK. Since the issue is specific to your original user account, you can proceed in two ways. One is to log into your new account, make a list of the preference files (plists) located in /username/Library/Preferences/, including any in the ByHost subfolder, log back into the original account, move everything on that other account's list from the original account's Preferences folder into a newly created folder on the Desktop, log out and back in, and see if the problem goes away. If so, you can copy the ones in the Desktop folder (one at time) back into /Preferences/, restart, and see if the problem returns. If so, you've identified the corrupt/conflicting one. Continue with all of them until isolating the bad ones. That'll save you the trouble of resetting preferences.
The second way is much more detailed and I'll not burden you with the steps unless the above doesn't fix the issue.

    Un-install according to the developer's un-install instructions.
You do not need to use cleaning programs. They can destroy your computer operation as they may already have done.

After un-installing, run this program to make sure you got all the pieces.
    EasyFind – Spotlight Replacement
    Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.appstore.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

  • Mac Book Software Update not working, iTune will not update because of that, iPhone 4 won't connect to iTunes because iTunes is not updated. Mac v.10.5.8, iTunes v.10.5.2, iPhone4 iOS 6

Mac Book Software Update not working (Software Update does not have any new software for your computer at this time), my current MacBook version is 10.5.8.
As a result I can't update iTunes, version 10.5.2  (This software requiers Mac OS X version 10.6.8 or later)
Now when I connect my iPhone 4, version iOS 6 iTunes can't connect to iPhone (The iPhone "XXXXX's iPhone" cannot be used because it requiers iTunes version 10.6.3 or later.)
so in a nutshell can't use iphone 4, because iTune is not updated and will not  update because Mac Book is not up to date and will not update either.

Software Update NOT WORKING (Snow Leopard)
Hi, I am currently using Snow Leopard 10.6 on my iMac. I opened iTunes and was told there was an update available so I clicked the button to download it. This obviously opened up the 'download' screen with blue bar. The blue bar does not move and the message comes up that the download failed. I have tried troubleshooting, but the message I get is that I am not connected to the internet - which I am.
    Please help.

Check your iTunes version, it's reporting v10.6.3 here on 10.6.8 and no updates required.
You should be able to download it from here

  • Apple Software Update Not Working

I cannot get Apple Software Update to work on my Windows XP Pro system. It simply says that new software was found but it did not specify which Apple software needs to be updated. I am using iTunes, QuickTime, and Safari. Any help appreciated!

The latest version numbers (at the time I'm making this post) are:
    iTunes 10.6.3.25
    QuickTime 7.7.2
    Safari 5.1.7
If you're behind on any of those, try updating using installers downloaded from the Apple website:

  • Toshiba 3D TV conked off after automatic Software Update!! Need help to get it working like before

    Hi there,
I' Using the Toshiba 46TL963G TV since 5 monts, recetly i asked for the **bleep** new software update and I let it install (ofcourse its connected via ethernet cable). After instalment the TV restarted automatically and everything was fine. I could watch TV well and I turned it OFF. and later Next morning When I turned On, it doesn't function anymore!!
How Crap is this TV.. It does the automatic software update and it conks off itself!!!
and the most annoying thing is that I went to this website "http://support.toshiba.com/" to get the support for this TV and when I entered the 8 charachter moderl of my TV , it say, wrong entry. WTF!!!! You dont clain your own product as yours??
Please help me how can I get my TV working fine as before, else I really have to start working on creating a blog "Reason Why one SHOULD not buy TV from TOSHIBA"
    - Many thanks
    Aravind

Peter, You _know_ that the firmware update crashes the TV. There have been enough reports of this online, and so much of it here on this forum that you cannot have missed it. Users need to resort to auto-flashing the firmware with files that are not publicly available from your site. Could you not at least remove the offending firmware from the list of things the television can automatically download? Aravind, you might try contacting the toshiba support to get them to send you the correct file to put on an USB device to force the TV to launch the update once plugged. Roaming the forums, it seems like this file should be something like "46TL963G_******_INIT_CLEAR.bin". Kellindil

  • Software Updates Not working...

I've recently started using macs (circa 2007) since intel started providing processors. This summer, I purchased an old (very) Power Mac G4 450mhz... now I have tiger running on it very nicely. However, I'm using an i.Tech Bluetooth V1.2 USB dongle to connect my wireless apple keyboard and mouse. All's well and good... till...
I boot in Mac OS 9, which I need to use because I have a very old software package that helps me with scientific calculations relating to enzyme Kinetics... but for me to boot into os 9 i need to connect a USB keyboard and mouse. This is because I don't have OS 9 drivers for the i.tech dongle.
Now another problem - when in OS 9 I cannot do software updates, and when I connect the USB bluetooth dongle it requests to connect to the internet to find software to make the dongle work... when I run either a software update, or connect a new device and Mac OS 9 requests to hunt for drivers online i'm given the following message:
"Software update is not able to connect to the Internet. Please check your configuration and try again"
I only have this problem when using OS 9's software update facility... web browsing is fine.
I was wondering if anyone knew how i could fix this software update issue? (is apple even running the OS 9 update servers...?) And also, does anyone know if the iTech USB V1.2 Bluetooth dongle work in OS 9?
    Thank you soooo much

Although you're right, it does relate to OS X, I thought i'd check it out anway. It states the issue may be a problem due to being connected via a proxy...
I'm just on a basic network - my cable modem is connected to a router, and my mac connected to the router..
    Thanks for your help anyway
Hopefully someone else can shed some light...

  • Software updates not working. Nokia 6700

I'm running software V10.5 on this phone and wish to update to V13 to help resolve problems with the call log which seems to have a mind of it's own and the updated map software.
When I use the Nokia Software Updater" on my PC, it loses contact with the phone and fails.  The only way to restart my phone is by removing the battery & powering it on again.  I 've tried to use the phone's built in updater to download the updates directly, only to be informed that "there are no new software updates available"  This is on top of having to constantly reinstall Nokia PC Suite for it to recognise the phone.
If anyone can offer any tips on how to resolve these problems I'd be grateful as i'm getting to the stage where Im considering ditching the phone as it's more trouble than it's worth.

After waiting forever for a hint of support on this question, I've made the decision that i need to buy a phone from a company that is able to provide a quality product, which is clearly no longer Nokia
Your phones do not work properly, your PC software is appalling and your company is a shadow of it's previous incarnation.  I can only assume that you have been sleeping through the long Scandanavian nights while your Asian competitors have been learning from your ever increasing list of mistakes.  To the Nokia employees I say good luck at the job centre.  For the managers, I say you do not deserve your salaries, let alone your bonuses.  I for one have given up after 18 years of owning nothing but Nokia's and will reluctantly buy a new phone from a company that deserves my business.

  • Software Update not working properly

    Hi all,
I have been having problems with my Software Update in that I am getting an error message saying "Software Update could not expand the package correctly". This has most recently happened with iPod Updater 2006-03-23.
This is not much to go on, but do any of you have an idea as to what might be wrong?
    Many thanks in anticipation.

    Hi Taylor L.
Thanks for the continued support and sorry for the delay in reply. As I said I am more than a bit inept on technical issues so I am afraid I have no idea how to repair my permissions.
Tried all the other fixes and no luck. I did try and run the update from the .pkg files in the trash folder (moved automatically by Updater when it did not work) and when it comes to selecting a destination the hard drive is nowhere to be found (i.e. there is no destination to select!). • Software Update not working

On my Mac Mini Software Update is not working as expected. I have this machine setup with multiple accounts and my kids accounts are very limited so they can use the computer safly while I am not home. My account has admin permissions. When I log into the computer and run Software Update it finds many (11) updates. I click install all and go do something else. I come back about 20 mintues later and found the system sitting at the "login" screen. I thought great it finished. Then I thought that was way to fast. So I log in and run Software Update again. You guessed it the same 11 items need an Update. So now I try and update them one at a time. I successfully updated a few items. Then I thought let me update the 4 items that require a reboot at one time. I started the update and left the machine alone for a while. I came back to the system saying I needed to restart. I clicked on OK. The system then said that it couldn't log out because "Software Update" was running. I could not do anything at this point except hold the power button in until the system powered down and I could then restart it.
To me it seams like a problem with the multi-user setup. Does anyone have any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Scott

This did not solve the problem. I repaired disk permissions and deleted all the SoftwareUpdate ".plist" files found in the link. I restarted the Mac Mini. When I tried to run the Software Update for everything it still died. I then ran each update by itself and it worked fine so my system is up to date. However, I suspect the problem will reappear the next time Apple releases many updates together.
I guess I need to figure out the best way to contact Apple directly. And thanks for the info you provided.

  • HT1338 Software update not working with snow leopard 10.6.8

When I try to update snow leopard 10.8.6 through the Software update, it launches but crashes with the message Software Update can't check for updates because of a network problem. Software Update can’t connect to the update server. But I do have internet connection. If I try to update from the terminal with the command " sudo softwareupdate -i -r, it tries to connect but end up with connection timed out. I have never able to update my system with software update utility. Does anybody have any suggestion?

    Hi,
This reply may seem late but might as well share my findings.
I have the same problems with the software updater for 10.6.8 as well after trying to move on to Mavericks from
    OS X Leopard 10.6.8.
Tried the patch as well the listed files to delete and etc but all failed.
Then I noticed the problem was with the software updater complaining that there was a network problem and even though the dignostics was run the results were no network connection exists but Air Port is connected and there is no issue browsing the web.
I took a look at the Wi-Fi settings and noticed that the default locations were going back to an old Wi-Fi network location I had latched on to 4 years ago! I assumed some screw up with the Wi-Fi network software and thus removed all Wi-Fi network associations and locations and reconfigured the Wi-Fi from scratch for my local home Wi-Fi network. After this the software update worked fine and can now download updates. Note that I did install the update patch by Apple though in my first attempt to resolve the problem.
I would consider the possibility of the Wi-Fi software services within OS X Snow Leopard being a bit "buggy".
Deleting all the non used Wi-Fi network associations and clearing or resetting the default location settings helped revive/resolve the no network connection problem with the software updater.

My Software Update is no longer working (it just suddenly stopped). When I try to launch it, I get
Software Update can't find the update server. Make sure you're connected to the Internet, then try again. Software update can't check for updates because of a network problem.
I'm then given the option to run Network Diagnostics. When I do, I get the following:
Cannot connect to server - Network Diagnostics was able to connect to the Internet, but not to the server "su.local" This could be caused by problems with the server, or an Internet problem between this computer and the server.
I've been manually updating OS updates, but not sure I'm getting all the ones I need.

Hello and welcome to the discussions. The server "su.local" sounds like your home network. My Software updates (10.5.6) come in on ports 80 and tcp port 6. Perhaps you have your computer accessing a local server first before it reaches the net.
    Just a thought...

  • Software Update not working post Mt. Lion install + other issues

Held out as long as I could, but finally purchased & downloaded Mt. Lion, yesterday. Install seemed to be OK., until I started noticing odd behaviors. Software Update, is not working in the manner to which I am familiar; the usual window does not open, instead I'm taken to the App Store, again & again.
I did go to Support Downloads & got the Java & Security updates which downloaded & installed.
Icons of apps are not appearing in Dock; such as Onyx which shows an icon which looks like old Appleworks!
    Is it true that Apple Mail no longer has Save As a Draft, option? Intermintent problems with sending mail;
says it can't connect with outgoing server but when I check, it is connected & communicating with that server.
Repaired Permissions; re-started in Safe mode; then re-started, again. Finally, decided to boot from Ext HD into MAC OS 10.6.8. and here I am.
Really miss the lovely beach scenes for Screen Saver in Mt. Lion; the offerings are so limited, and ugly.
    Thanks for your time,
    Cali

Check Launchpad.  Your apps may appear there.
Onyx may need to be updated to work in ML.

There is no more Software Update I'm sad to say.  AppStore has taken over the updates now.  Look at the top of the AS window & you will see "Updates."

All of the OS screensavers & desktop pictures can be found on the net.  Do a Google search for them.
I do not use Apple's Mail, so I cannot comment on it.
Recommend that you do what I did;  purchase OS X Mountain Lion: The Missing Manual - David Pogue .  This book is very easy reading, non technichal & non geeky.  I strongly recommend this book as it takes you step-by-step through Mountain Lion.

  • Automatic software updates not working

I have software updates enabled (check, download, install) but it doesn't work. There is no reminder and new updates are not installed. So I need to check manually. I've enabled and disabled the function to no avail. The only thing I can think of is I have two apple ID's (unfortunately by mistake )
Are there more with the same issue?
    Remco

Try downloading the update & then installing it while started in Safe mode
