Software Update Not Working - Stuck at "Checking for New Software"
Hey Everybody,
I have recently been experiencing problems with my Software Update. After I open it, it gets stuck at the screen and times-out after a while asking me to check my network to see if I'm connected to the Internet. My internet is working fine yet the Software Update is still not working. I have tried removing the Software Update pdlist and trying to change the cache.db yet nothing is working. I have run the verify disk and repair disk utility with no result. Anyone got any other ideas other then a clean install?
See if the following fixes the problem:
Fix for Software Update
See Troubleshooting Automatic Software Update in Mac OS X.
Delete the following files:
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
/Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
/Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.xxx.plist
"xxx" is a number.
/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate/ (delete entire folder)

Software Update Stuck on "Checking for New Software..."
Not sure why, but today when I selected "Check for New Software" from the Apple Menu, Software Update started checking and does not proceed past that step. I've included a screenshot to show exactly where it's stuck.
http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/9536/picture1ss7.png
Thanks for any help you can give me.You may want to go to the Apple Downloads site and download the update manually, then check the .dmg with Disk Utilities’ Verify Disk, and then run the update package.
Sometimes there is an internet interruption that can corrupt the download, especially using a modem or DSL. -
Apple Software Update is stuck in the "Checking for new software..." phase
I installed iTunes+Quicktime using iTunes64Setup.exe and so ASU got automatically installed as well.
When I manually start ASU, it immediately checks for new software and the progress bar stalls at around 10%. I have not seen ASU run by the task scheduler yet.
Bonus: The ASU logo has weird colours (http://imagebin.ca/view/XN2-zrN.html)
Is anybody also having the same problem? That's an odd one.
Have you tried a repair install of ASU?
Head into your Uninstall a program control panel, select "Apple Software Update" and click "Repair".
Any help with the hang or the logo issue? -

Un-install according to the developer's un-install instructions.
You do not need to use cleaning programs. They can destroy your computer operation as they may already have done.
CleanMyMac - Uninstall
CleanMyMac2 Un-install
After un-installing, run this program to make sure you got all the pieces.
EasyFind – Spotlight Replacement
Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.appstore.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Mac Book Software Update not working (Software Update does not have any new software for your computer at this time), my current MacBook version is 10.5.8.
As a result I can't update iTunes, version 10.5.2 (This software requiers Mac OS X version 10.6.8 or later)
Now when I connect my iPhone 4, version iOS 6 iTunes can't connect to iPhone (The iPhone "XXXXX's iPhone" cannot be used because it requiers iTunes version 10.6.3 or later.)
so in a nutshell can't use iphone 4, because iTune is not updated and will not update because Mac Book is not up to date and will not update either.
Please help.
Thank you

Snow Leopard is a paid upgrade. http://support.apple.com/kb/sp575 Call Apple to buy Snow Leopard. Then, make a backup, insert the DVD and upgrade. When it finishes, open > Software Update -
Software Update wont check for new software.
Software Update wont check for new software.
No - I'm on 10.6.8 and it functions normally, though there are now very few actual updates. If there are no updates the progress bar should still complete in around 3 minutes and announce that there are no updates, so you've got something hanging somewhere. If it's still stuck hit command-option (alt)- escape, select Software Update and hit Force Quit. You could try it again (I should reboot first) in case it's a one-off glitch, but if it still sticks force quit it again.
The best suggestion I can offer is to apply the combo updater anyway in the hope that it may over-write whatever is causing the problem.

TS1394 Software Update NOT WORKING (Snow Leopard)
Software Update NOT WORKING (Snow Leopard)
Hi, I am currently using Snow Leopard 10.6 on my iMac. I opened iTunes and was told there was an update available so I clicked the button to download it. This obviously opened up the 'download' screen with blue bar. The blue bar does not move and the message comes up that the download failed. I have tried troubleshooting, but the message I get is that I am not connected to the internet - which I am.
Please help.Check your iTunes version, it's reporting v10.6.3 here on 10.6.8 and no updates required.
You should be able to download it from here

I want to update my iphone5 to ios7 but after selecting software update it is contineusly showing checking for update only dosent show anything.
it likely require wifi not 3g
it likely should only be don when connected to AC
try using a computer and itunes to see if that let you download it that way -
Every time I try to update, I get a message saying unable to update- an error occurred while checking for a software update
im having a similiar problem but my iphone 4s is stuck in the recovery mode.. like every time i restore the phone to factory setting it redownloads the firmware but nothing changes. any ideas?
-
Whenever I run software update, the blue bar freezes at about a fourth of the way across while "Checking for new software..." and then the fans sometimes speed up until I click Cancel. Sometimes it eventually completes "Checking for new software..." but when it does it is usually 45 minutes to an hour later. What gives?
If I reinstall the OS, will that jeopardize my data, docs or photo library?
No. Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down) and first select Disk Utility to repair disk permissions and the disk. Reboot and try the App Store again.
If that fails boot again into the Recovery volume again and reinsatll the system. Your data and photos will not be jeoparadized.

Your Tag states... iPhone 4S, iOS 6.1.3

weI am getting occasional Safari is out of date messages but checking for new software says "up to date". Initially we subscribed to Support but did not realize that it has expired. We have upgraded the OS once but have not received any notices of additional upgrades. So far I have not come across a way to update on my own.
I suspect this is the issue but wonder whether it is wise to upgrade my model:

OSX checking for new software forever
After upgrading to 10.5.5 my Dual 2gHz G5 is checking for new software forever
when I try to upgrade to that latest version of ARDT.
It goes about 70% and then sits there, with progressbar not making any progress beyon that.
No crash, I can cancel and quit...but not use Software update anymore...
Anybody with a fix?
best
jtmhave you tried downloading ard 3.2.2 yourself rather than to use software update to fetch updates for you? you can read about it here http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/appleremotedesktop322admin.html
you may also like to try the command line. i normally use the command line to perform software update instead of hitting apple > software update... because ive had less trouble running it via the command line. the command i use is +softwareupdate -ai+ -
Is 10.6.x Snow Leopard and 10.7.x Lion?
"Selected software update and it says there is no new software for my system."
You already have all the free updates that are pertinent to Snow Leopard. Software Update only finds and installs free updates to your Apple software — it doesn't do anything with upgrades that must be purchased, like Lion. If you were to purchase and install Lion, Software Update would then find and offer to install all the free updates that are applicable to Lion. -
Software Update - Checking for new software bar stuck
Hi,
When i check for software updates the loading bar gets stuck (please see image below), i left it for a couple of hours and its still the same.
The software updates was working before, what could be causing the issue?
i got a macbook pro 13' early 2011.
ThanksI once had issues using the software update once after buying a used mini - previous owner must've changed the software update servers address. could this have happened to you?
you could fire up terminal and give this a try:
defaults delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL
idk if this is gonna help, but its not gonna hurt either.
