Software Update on the Fritz...

I have 10.5.1 and Final Cut Studio 2. I installed the Compressor 3.0.2 Update about a week ago. The next day, I was asked to install it again...I figured something went wrong with the first installation so I did it again. But every day it asks me to install the thing. How can I get it to stop?

Sounds more like your drive needs repairs along with the normal advice to run "Repair Permissions." Also, I assume you must be using the standalone update? No? download that, and the 10.5.1 updater as well and run 10.5.1 - but not until you have booted from DVD or another Leopard drive and repaired yours, or boot from Tiger and run Disk Warrior.
And by all means, make a bootable clone of your system.
Disk Utility Restore or Carbon Copy Cloner 3.01 can handle that aspect.

Hello cor-el, thanks for your reply. I changed my settings for downloads to desktop and it has appeared on there. When I double click I am asked which program I want to open file. I click firefox and another box "opening install" says I have chosen to open the file which is an application and do I want to save it. This is the only real option so I press save file. I get a box saying this is an executable file which may contain viruses - do you want to run. I press ok and the final box showing C drive file name and desktop appears stating application not found.
This happens the same whenever I try to install.
To my untrained eye the application is not being recognised as an application and I cannot work out how to get it to do that.
My plugin is still showing as out of date.
Is there anything you could suggest. Thanks for your time. -
so my phone is plugged into the computer for a software update and the update went halfway through and kind of stopped. it says its still updating but I cant figure out how to stop it and just get my phone back. how do i get my phone back without losing anything?

I have an ipad 2, yesterday I updated my ipad going in to settings software update, then the ipad went into resore mode saying it needs to connect to itunes. I did that and itunes said it was goingo to do a resotre and I lost all my info, pictures, contacts. Is there a way to recover all my info?
You should be able to reconnect to iTunes and then you should see an option to restore to your ipad from your last back up in iTunes.

I am having exactly the same problem right now. After some research, it looked like my HD was toast. I replaced it today, that part was easy, but now I cannot seem to use my original Install Disk to format the new HD. I get a grey restart screen, or if I get to the Language Selection screen, my cursor is frozen in left corner and I can't use it.
Very frustrating, hope someone else has some ideas!

Some sites(like youtube for instance) want me to update Safari but when I go to Software Update under the apple it says there are no updates. What do I do now?
Upgrade the computer’s OS, or switch to a product such as Firefox.
To upgrade, open the Mac App Store and try downloading Yosemite. If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

It's a bit like the redesign of these discussion fora - the new layouts are designed for the younger generation but far too much scrolling and hard work to find what you want compared to the old format.

I am not able to do a software update as the download button is disabled. Why and any advise may i upgrade my software
The download button will be disabled if you are not on a WiFi connection at the present time.
My 4G/LTE connection is actually faster than my available WiFi (in this present location), but those are the rules... -
iphone wont recognize in itunes. it's got the latest software update and the latest version of itunes on the computer. the phone works as normal but i want to restore it but can't because i can only get the the recovery mode stage and then it needs itunes???

I cannot open pages on my MacBookPro. I get a message to update it. In my software update in the apple menu drop down, it shows no updates at this time. I have iWork '09.
You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.01 can not open Pages 5.1 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5.1 files can not be opened in Pages 5.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed over 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs, including files that refuse rto open:

That would be because you have the last version of Tiger. To upgrade you need to purchase a newer version of OS X released since Tiger. They would be:
Leopard (10.5.x);
Snow Leopard (10.6.x);
Lion (10.7.x).
Which one you purchase depends in part on your computer model and installed RAM. Unfortunately, you did not provide any additional information.
Lion is the current version of OS X, but Snow Leopard is still available through Apple's Online Store. -
i have a 4.2.1 i pod touch and it says i need a 4.3 ios version and it wont show any signs of software update underneath the 'about' area i dont know how to change this
It is likely you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to 4.2.1

There is already new hardware for the nano (7th Generation) and it would take a hardware modification to put video on the 6th Generation Nano so no speculation was needed, Carl had the correct answer.
My Original iPod Nano received updates beyond it's generation, there is no reason to conclude this would not be possible for other models and generations. Why would the iPod Nano 6G need a hardware modification for video playback? It already can do analog composite video output for viewing slideshows with music and transitions on a TV and can handle full photo resolutions. The iPod Nano 6G seems more than capable from a hardware perspective of video playback, it's just that the screen is tiny small for viewing video realistically for any length of time with comfort. That can be rectified by using the onboard TV out feature, though battery life might be miserable. It has nothing to do with the release of the iPod Nano 7G.
