Software Update only restarts, no download

Software Update requires a restart, but does NOT download and therefore does not install anything. Wifi is working fine (or I wouldn't be posting this). There is no lag time. The request to restart pops up immediately after clicking "Install and Restart" while the appropriate selected softwares have their boxes checked. The request to restart then clicked leads to an actual restart upon which no downloading has happened nor procedes. The only other option presented is "Not Now".
System 10.6.8
Macbook Pro 2009

Connect your Magsafe when downloading and installing from Software Update instead of doing so wireless.  I get a warning from Software Update if I attempt to download or install wireless.  Once I connect my Magsafe, smooth sailing.

have reformatted my Imac using original discs (installed leopard (10.5)) tried to do the software update but it cant download the itunes update and when it gets to the configure update screen after restart for main update, it just gets stuck. HELP!
The configure bar gets about an 1/8 full and then just does nothing. I think its lists the update as combo update? cant remember with out checking.
I have tried to do the disk verify and repair but this has made no difference.
Please let me know what i need to do, I have reformatted the mac just to start over as was clogged with a lot of useless data, I had installed lion (10.7) from the app store previously and now cant seem to find a way to re install lion. I hope I dont need to pay for it again?

If you erased your hard drive, you'll need to reinstll OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard to access the App store. You won't have to pay for OS X 10.7 Lion again. Did you try booting to the recovery partition by holding the command and r keys down? If that's still there, you can reinstall OS X 10.7 from there.
If you're looking to install the current iTunes, you need OS X 10.6.8 at a minimum.
If you're still trying to update OS X 10.5 Leopard, you can download the combo update from here.  Download, use Disk Utility to repair permissions, apply the update, then repair permissions again. That will take you to OS X 10.5.8.

Don't panic. OS X 10.5.8 is the most popular PowerPC OS out there. People run it everyday without security breaches, including myself. It isn't Windows!
If you're really that worried, I highly recommend Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition. Supports PowerPC & Intel and Mac OS X 10.4-10.7.

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the thingy):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Software Updates in DMZ BITS download hangs

    Hi guys,
i am running into a strange problem when deploying software updates to a DMZ system without internet access.
Here are some facts about the environment:
    1 Primary Site: W2k8 R2 / SCCM 2012
1 DMZ system (mgmt Point, sup, dp)  W2k8R2 (SQL replication, manual wsus replication) SSL Must be used
The DMZ mgmt Point is not able to download Software Updates. They are listed in the Software Center but they persist with downloading at 0%. Application packages are working fine. Just the SW Update get stuck.
The Boundaries are OK, there are no "IIS request filtering files" inside the updates (e.g just scep definitions), the DP ist up to date, iis bindings are correct (if i install the client certificate in the internet explorer i am able to access the DP.
I already reinstalled the client and created new deployments.
It would be really great if you have some ideas what the problem could be?
Here are some parts of the logs:
it is very strange that "internetproxy.log" looks for a proxy even if the server is the DP itself.

thank you very much for your help!!
    best regards
    Philipp

    Hi Philipp,
I am having this same problem...software updates are stuck at downloading 0% for "internet" DMZ/Workgroup SCCM 2012 clients that communicate with DP/MP in an untrusted forest (no internet access). Normal software packages/programs/task sequences can
    download and install successfully.
SCCM 2012 SP1 with CU1 running on Windows Server 2012 on all site servers and site system servers. SQL 2012 SP1 on site servers. Clients using PKI certs. MP and DP using HTTPS with PKI certs.
Similarities are that there is a 207 in the IIS log file when the client attempts to download the update. The rest of the logs aren't very useful because they just stop logging and the client sits in a "downloading 0%" state.
Did you ever resolve the problem? Is anyone else having this problem?
Thanks, appreciate any help I can get.
    Darren

  • Snow leopard server for net boot and software updates only what needs to be running to use it?

Snow leopard server for net boot and software updates only what needs to be running to have it work right?

Netboot and Software Update, at its simplest.  Mac OS X Server also expects to have functional IP networking and DNS services (somewhere) on the LAN (and if you're behind a NAT gateway, then the DNS server(s) are on your LAN and not out at your ISP), or things get weird.  SUS (usually) works out of the box, outside of cases where there's an outbound firewall.  Netboot can be more effort to setup, in terms of what you're loading into the clients.

  • Can i download apple software update only?

Windows 7 won't let me install iTunes 10.5.1.  Getting that nasty "microsoft.vc80.crt whatever message.  Folk suggest repairing apple software update program, but guess what, I've already uninstalled that as part of the removal of all apple programs.  Can I just dowload the update program?

The software update program is not available (to the best of my knowledge) as a stand-alone download.  It gets installed as part of iTunes, Quicktime, and Safari.

  • HT4623 Under settings; general I do not have software updates how do I download and updates

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

  • After Software Update Only Logo and Spinning Wheel Appear

After downloading latest versions of Safari, OSX, and iTunes suggested via software update, a message stating that not all software (iTunes) instatlled. Restart resulted in the Apple logo and spinning wheel and never continued to completion. A hardware test using supplied disc resulted in a pass for tests run. I cannot boot the software restore disc when restarting and holding down C key. Anyone experience something similar? Any guidance would be appreciated.

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
Try a Safe mode boot (hold Shift while booting).
Safe mode boots take longer, so be patient.
If successful, at the login window, click Restart, and allow a normal boot.

  • Software Update stopped working after download of Pro Application 4.0.1

I'm reposting this since the subject was not clear.
After using Software Update to download "Pro Application support 4.0.1" the Software Update utility stopped working the next time I went to used it. It just sits at the "checking for new software" screen with only a 6th of the blue bar used. It cansels OK. I let it run for more than 30 minutes before canceling. I'm not sure if "Pro Application support 4.0.1" had anything to do with it. But it was the last thing done with the application.

    Hello,
Perhaps your Software Update prefs are corrupted. Do this:
    Locate this file: com.apple.softwareupdate.plist
It's here: /Home/Library/Preferences. Open the Preferences folder, locate that file and drag it to the Trash. Empty the Trash and reboot.
Run Disk Utility located in your Applications folder and Repair Disk Permissions.
Also, make sure your hard drive has no less than 15% free hard drive space. To locate this information, open a Finder window. The information will be displayed at the bottom.

  • Firefox 3.6.15 is not downloading on MAC OSX, not via software update nor via manual download. It claims i do not have full admin rights which is not true.

If I do a manual download via FF website, it starts to install, asking if I want to replace an older version of FF. If I then continue, it says that it cannot process as I do not have access to 'certain components'????
I have full admin rights, it is f... my computer. I am running a Macbook Pro on OSX 10.6.6.
FF is giving me more problems lately, a.o. not showing certain flash elements (have latets flashplayer). Anyone else getting annoyed with FF?

I eventually did an archive and install to get 10.4.7 installed on my MBP the last time around. Now 10.4.8 is doing the same thing. Neither via Software Update nor manual downloads of Intel delta or combo updaters will apply. Arg!
Has anyone else seeen this? I've tried applying the update while booted regularly and also in safe boot to no avail.

  • Software Updater ran, restarted, booted from external FW HD for no reason??

I did a Software Update yesterday and got the latest iWeb and Quicktime. I was then prompted to restart the computer, it restarted and for some reason used by backup external FW HD as the startup disc. The internal drive is, and has always been, the startup disc. While running from the backup drive, I went Startup Disk in System Prefs, selected the internal drive and restarted. It restarted from the internal drive perfectly. I recently ran Drive Genius on the internal and external drives and the permissions are repaired nightly when SuperDuper makes an overnight Smart Backup of my system... the internal drive on my iMac was just replaced by Apple less than a month ago. Can't figure why the internal drive wouldn't get used. Why might the system have randomly elected to use the external FW HD as the boot drive?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I don't have an answer for you, because I've never seen that behavior, but suggest that you unmount and power-off any external HDs while doing updates. That will preclude that from ever happening again.

  • Getting an error message that unable to check for software update when trying to download new iOS 8.0.2 update ?? Can someone help ???

Getting an error message of unable to
check for software update when trying to update to
ios 8.0.2. Can someone help ??

    Howdy there otss1979,
It sounds like you are unable to download the iOS 8.0.2 update either, over the air, or using iTunes. If you are updating the software on your phone in Settings > General > software update I would recommend starting with this article:
Resolve issues with an over-the-air iOS update
If you are using iTunes, I would use this article instead:
Resolve iOS update and restore errors in iTunes
If you are getting a specific error number, the following article will help you get that resolved:
Resolve iOS update and restore errors
If this does not resolve the issue, could you please write the error message you are getting word for word for me?
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • After software update and restart, acts like it's a new install?

    Greetings All,
After doing the recent software update on my son's 20" iMac C2D machine, I did the restart and once it reboots I get the "quick start" page as if it were a new install of Leopard and nothing were no user accounts set up. I can restart in target disc mode and connect to the iMac with my MBP, everything is still there, including all the recent files on the desktop. The Time Machine back up is also in tact.
Why can't it see the account and boot up? Any way to boot from the Time Machine back up? Any help is much welcomed at this point as my son needs to do some school work tonight.

By "quick start" do you mean the Setup Assistant that, among other things, lets you setup the first user account? If so, go with it. When you get to setting up that account, ensure that the "short name" exactly matches the name of the lost home folder. The new account will "adopt" that folder & you should be back in business.
FWIW... an alternative would be to setup a temporary account like "test". Once you have access to the system, you'd go to SysPrefs->Accounts and add a new user whose short name, again, matches the name of the home folder you want. In this case, it will say that a folder with that name exists & ask whether you want to use it. This method is useful if you can't remember the exact name of the folder in question - you can open the Users folder and copy the name letter for letter.
