Software Update periodically stops downloading

This is the closest category I could find to post this in, so I apologize if it's in the wrong one.
Here is my problem: I am running Software Update, and everything is working fine, expect the download will from time to time (sometimes quite frequently) stop in its tracks. The program is responding, and everything seems in order, it just stops downloading. The update I'm currently on (GarageBand assets) is over 1 Gig, so maybe the large file size is the culprit. Either way, when I stop the download and tell it to install again it picks up where it left off and resumes progress. It's just a little annoying to have to keep checking up on it to make sure it's still going.
Thanks for reading all that, and for any insights you have to offer.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
How much free disk space on the hard drive?
Control or right click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop. Click "Get Info". Under the General tab you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is at least 10% available disk space, 15% is better.
There is an alternative to downloading Apple updates. Go here and read here: "Using standalone installers from Apple Support Downloads"
Tip ... always run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions BEFORE and AFTER all software installations.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

I am not able to do a software update as the download button is disabled. Why and any advise may i upgrade my software

The download button will be disabled if you are not on a WiFi connection at the present time.
My 4G/LTE connection is actually faster than my available WiFi (in this present location), but those are the rules...

  • Trying to install updates through software update and it downloads and tries to install then quits with and error

I am trying to install the updates from software updates.
It downloads and attempts to install but then gives and error saying nothing was installed.
What could be causing this problem.
The updates are for Itunes and a Digital Camera Raw Compatibility update.

Thanks for the help... Here is what I found on the log.
    Hopefully I did this right

  • Software Update... download duration time

Hi there... I hope someone can help
I have just bought an iphone and have connected it to my imac. Everything is very new so latest software is already on my mac. The activation process was okay and successful. However, the software update (recommended to download) is taking about 20 hours. The sales guy (a jem!) told us to not disconnect during the download which he expected to take about 45 mins. I have emailed him but am hoping for a little help before he gets back to work!
Is this right??? that it should take 20 hours to download 162.mb i mean??? Can I disconnect the phone and ask it to restore original settings and then try again for the update?
any advice would be very much appreciated
A 'new to mac' user, Cath

Hi again... sleep has not yet won so I just wanted to let you know what has happened...
first of all, the download has now completed and my iphone is now a wonderful new toy!!! fully operational as far as i can tell.
My hubby's phone has just gone through the same process and he is using his laptop with vista o/s. His activation is successful also and his download of the update software has just completed... then he had a message on screen saying:
iTunes could not connect to the iPhone because the pairing message is missing
oh dear... can anyone help with this please???
    thanks again
    Luv Cath x

  • Software Update server keeps downloading updates when set not to

When I first setup our server (10.5.x) for software update, I looked over the option to to uncheck the box for automatically downloading updates from Apple. Since then, it has downloaded pretty much everything. I've unchecked that option and also selected it to delete old updates. It keeps downloading updates and won't delete older updates. We've since upgraded to 10.6.2. Same thing. I've even manually deleted ALL of the updates only to watch them all come back. Any clues?

Welcome to the wonderful world that is the Software Update Service
I have the same problem and have yet to find a sensible answer to this problem. I have three Macs at home and only need a small proportion of the updates that Apple supply yet no matter what I do, I can't seem to stop SUS downloading everything even though I don't want it and have told it not to download.
Best of luck getting any sense out of Apple on this. I'm going to try a home made solution to get round this problem.

  • Error during setup of software update deploy or download.

    Hi,
We periodically get an error on a single patch download when finishing up the deploy of a software update as shown in the screen shot.
Does this mean the download is ok except for the one patch or is the entire deploy broke?
    Thanks Lance

You need to ensure your proxy settings "as the computer" account is to open a command prompt (as admin), and run "psexec -i -s -d cmd" which will open a new command prompt "as the computer" then launch Internet explorer from wherever it resides in c:\program
files\etc... and try to open that web page from Microsoft that it's having trouble with. i.e.
http://wsus.ds.downl...oft.com----.exe and see if you can open the file. that will rule out any proxy issues

  • I am running 4.0 version, and each time I open Firefox, I get a software update that says "Downloading Firefox / connecting to the update server", but it just STICKS there??? Why is this happening?

I am running Firefox 4.0 version, but for some reason, it tries to download updates and then gets stuck on trying to connect to the update server. This has been happening the past few days. When I close the update, I can proceed in Firefox without incident (that I know of).

    See:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Software_Update (Software Update not working properly)
Remove the files in the updates and updates\0 folder.<br />
You may need to delete active-update.xml and updates.xml as well if present.
    C:\Documents and Settings\&lt;user&gt;\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates
    (%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox)
If you have problems with updating then easiest is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version and remove the Firefox program folder to do a clean install of the new version.
    * Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
    * Do not remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • New software update still not downloading.  Apps updates have all downloaded since iTunes issue resolved.  Is the software issue also related to this, or is there another problem?  This is on my iPhone 6, not my Mac.

Trying to download the iOS 8.2 software update on my iPhone 6, but it won't update.  All app updates have resolved since the iTunes issue was resolved.  Is the software update issue related to this as well, or is it another problem entirely?
I've synced it to iTunes, turned it off/on, etc., but still not downloading.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi DebC64,
So is the iOS 8.2 update not downloading to your iPhone, computer or both?
You have synced it to iTunes, that is an option to update if it's not updating wirelessly.  Please see if other steps help.

  • "Software Update" crashes upon download

Last week I was given a new Mac mini as a gift; I upgraded the memory to 2G; did Target Disk transfer from my old G4, then started using it (didn't use it before the memory or the transfer).
Software Update crashes at the point when the download has just started, every time, even with individual small downloads. Other symptoms: Safari crashes upon start-up, any Widgets that look up info crash when they go get data. Firefox works but crashes accessing some video, same with Explorer.
I have manually downloaded and upgraded to OSX 10.4.9. System can't recognize/mount the .dng download file to upgrade to 10.4.10 (I manually downloaded the Combo Intel). Java is 10.4.2, but when I try to install Java 10.4 Release 5, it tells me to upgrade to the previous version first (which is already installed).
I suspect this is a Java and downloading glitch. Does Software Update rely on Java? Any ideas? I've searched the message boards for this problem, but haven't found anyone else with this problem.
Many thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    MarkinArlington wrote:
Thank you for your reply. I used the Setup Assistant to migrate from my G4.
That's probably the cause of your issues. Apparently, the Setup Assitant will sometimes migrate (PowerPC-specific) system files over to Intel-based Macs (causing many odd problems), so using it to migrate from a PPC to an Intel Mac isn't recommended.
Unfortunately, you will have to re-install Mac OS X to solve your issues (trying to figure out which specific files are causing the issues will probably be too long, with little chance of success); I don't know whether an Archive & Install is enough to fix this, but perhaps someone else knows? Otherwise you could ask in the Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger > Installation & Setup forum. If you need to do an Erase & Install, you will lose all data on your hard drive, so you'll need to create a backup of all your user files first.

  • HT2712 Is it possible to set up network locations in such a way that other preferences also get set?  Specifically, I usually have my Software Updates set to download in the background, but when I am using my iPhone's Personal Hotspot I'd like to disable

Or indeed is some other way possible, such as using an Applescript to detect when I am using my personal hotspot on my (limited data package!) 3g iPhone (via wi-fi or USB etc) and then switch off the automatic downloads until I revert back to my regular connection?
Apologies -seem to have posted this in the worng forum.

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
But Software Update won't be an available setting choice.
But I'd turn off automatic Updates anyway, & just check once a week or once a month to see what's available.

  • Don't use the Software Update in Preferences - download the Combo Updater !

Software Update failed and I had to archive/install back to 10.5 - just download the Combo Updater and you should be ok.

To close this thread - the Combo update worked perfectly and my machine is exactly how it was before starting the update process - except for about 12 gig, which I assume the archive/install ate up.

  • Software Update Won't Download 10.5 Updates

Our software update server (running 10.5) will not download any of the newest 10.5 software updates--all we get is small exclamation points in front of any of the 4 latest updates that have anything to do with 10.5. All of the other updates are fine, just nothing that relates to 10.5. We have restarted, tried to reload the updates, etc., and it just will not get these 4 updates. Internet access is working fine on the machine, and nothing has changed on the machine.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    Hi
The exclamation mark means that your Update Server knows the updates are available and is in the process of downloading them. The best advice I can give you regarding the SUS in 10.5 is to have plenty of patience. The log itself should give you some indication of what is happening?

I have a new software updates deployment. I see there are updates that are required on a few clients. The clients work fine with a software package/application, as they download fine with no problems, so it's not a boundary issue. But I can't get the software

Anyone have any update to this scenario?
I did a site recovery to new hardware, and subsequently new WSUS version for Server 2012, and am having issues with deploying software updates.  Like the OP above I can deploy applications and packages with no issues.
I've deleted the software update group, recreated and deployed to a collection with machines that do not have these updates installed, since they are this months newest updates.
In the UpdatesDeployment.log I see the following logged:
