Software update question for iTunes and Safari

Preface -
I only use the software update in the Apple to check for new software, then download it manually and install it following all the directions so carefully specified here by many of you good folks.
So, first some the rhetorical questions - How much does SU check? Does it look at other Apple apps running at the same time? Does it check OS (it must!)? Does it look to see if what it suggests needs to be updated is compatible with what is there?)
Background information -
I have Safari 3.2.3. Since Safari doesn't work for me and I never use it, I have not updated it. Several of you told me not to bother updating Safari since v4x probably wouldn't work if 3 doesn't (what doesn't work is I can't quit without force quitting and there appears to be no fix).
The latest SU tells me new versions of iTunes - 9.0.3 - and Safari - 4.0.4 - are available. I am running iTunes 7.7. According to the download page, iTunes 9 has to have Safari 4.
The questions -
So, why does SU tell me updates for iT and Safari are available without specifying that I MUST do both updates and do them so that Safari 4 is in place before I update iTunes (or iTunes will die?) Note - I never visit the iTunes store; I just use iTunes to transfer to my iPod my own CDs which I've copied onto the computer in lossless.
Since, I never use Safari anyway, will it cause any difficulty if I DO do the update to 4 and just let it sit in a folder unused as 3.2.3 sits there doing nothing? OR does iTunes USE Safari to access the library of CD track info when it makes suggestions for labeling tracks on CDs I've downloaded to my library?
I hope this makes sense, I fear I am rambling on here...
Thanks in advance for your help,
Mrs H

Dear Kappy,
First of all, thank you for tackling my issue with Safari. I have to begin by saying it was intermittent, but Mr H and I have just stopped using Safari. I just tried it and it was fine - but I don't know how long that will last.
And, by the way, we have the same issue occasionally for all three of our Tiger Macs - I have reinstalled OS, done the combo reinstall - OS plus Safari (I believe that's the term - combo?; it's been a while and I can't remember exactly what I was instructed here to do - but I did it).
You probably won't want to read all of this, but since you have been so kind as to jump onboard my Safari issue, here are the links to the 2 _very long_ threads, (part one and two), describing my issues with Safari:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1986914&tstart=0
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2037950&tstart=0
Plus the third installment:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2097007&tstart=0
Klaus1 was ever so patient and the final advice, I believe, was - just don't use Safari. It was a memory hog - using what looked like even more than 100% of memory - which made no sense - and it just wouldn't allow me to quit without force quitting. Everything else works just fine...or so it seems to me and has done so for ages (except that we've been gone for several months so I can't count that...)
Do you suggest doing this first?
Kappy wrote:
My guess is you have corrupted preference or cache files. Perhaps clearing out cache files and deleting related preference files may fix the problem.
I'm sure I was instructed to do this and have done so, but I'll gladly do it again. How to delete pref file? and will they rebuild?
Then can I do this suggestion of "deleting the latter 2" mentioned below, without learning how to open a new account - I used to know, but have gone brain dead on this... - or should I do this too? And, deleting them - will they rebuild?
Possibly in the /Home/Library/Safari/ folder or a problem with the /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.safari.plist file or /Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/ folder. Start by deleting the latter two.
Should someone move this discussion over to Safari?
Thank you again for offering your help here,
Mrs H

I cannot find the answers to my security questions for ITunes and cannot figure out how to reset the questions.

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, clicking here and picking a method for your country, and filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

  • As of the last update for itunes and safari

Itunes and Safari , will no longer connect to the internet, I can still get updates for some of my subscriptions, the apple store will not open, Safari will not open any websites, my friend and myself are from usa, we are both in China at differnt locations, he is running XP and I running Vista

Just found this... this solution worked for me.
Correct AnswerRe: iTunes Store not loading on iTunes.

Try resetting Winsock, it looks like it worked for quite a few people in this thread -> With iTunes 10.4 I can access iTunes store.
MTG68 wrote - In windows 7, click on your start menu, go to accessories, right click on the command prompt icon and choose "run as administrator".  Once it opens, type in the following command...
    netsh winsock reset
hit enter and it should say something like winsock reset successful now reboot your computer.
If that doesn't work, try uninstalling Safari, QuickTime, and iTunes (along with related components). Then just reinstall the latest version of iTunes, without installing downloading and installing Safari or QuickTime seperately.

  • I have a macbook pro and have just updated my itunes to the 10.5, it has been sitting on the 'software update' box for 2 and a half hours and only has about 3mm of space left that is not blue. Is it normal to take this long downloading this update? Help!

I have been sitting looking at the blue line almost finished for over 2 hours. It says Writing files... underneath and Installing 11 items above the blue box. What should i do? Is there a problem or is it just taking a long time?? Im trying to set up my new iphone 4S but cant until this itunes is updated!
    Please help.
    Cheers

You have 10.6 on that machine, I suggest you stick with it for performance, third party hardware and software reasons as long as possible.
Consider 10.8 (not 10.7) when it's released, because 10.7 and 10.8 will require a new investment in software and newer third party hardware as it requires newer drivers the old machines won't have. (forced upgrade because of software, really nice of them)

Far as your Safari problem do these things until it's resolved:
1: Software Update fully under the Apple menu.
2: Check the status of your plug-ins and update (works for all browsers) also install Firefox and see if your problems continue. You should always have at least two browsers on the machine just in case one fails.

4: Run through this list of fixes, stopping with #16 and report back before doing #17

  • After AVG PC Tune up, software update message for security and stability update is available FireFox 3.6.18. Should I Update?

My Dell laptop (Operating on Windows XP) was hit with multiple viruses - I could not open Mozilla Firefox or any other applications for that matter. After much time and many attempts, I was finally able to install and run an AVG Scan and then an AVG PC Tune up. 4,559 problems found and repaired. After the repairs, I received the following message:
"Software Update - A security and stability update for Firefox is available: Firefox 3.6.18 - It is strongly recommended that you apply this update for Firefox as soon as possible. - an underlined link reading, "View more information about this update" and then 2 choices - "Ask Later" or "Update Firefox." Since part of the problem was with Firefox and some error messages pointed to that, I'm hesitant to click on any of the three options above. Can you help me to get past this error message, please. I am sending this from my home computer. Thank you. Diane

Sometimes the updater gets in a funny state - Go to http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/ and download the full installer. Close Firefox and run the installer

  • Last software update - instability in Dock and Safari

I performed a software update a few days ago. Since then, I have been experiencing kernel access crashes from both the Dock and Safari when using the system. I also had Mail crash when I was not using the system, but I am unsure if that is related.
Rebooting the system did not help.
The system is usable, but Dock and Safari crash and restart 1-2 times daily. I am unable to find a consistant way to reproduce the crashes. I report each incident, but I am getting tired of writing the descriptions.

Yes; I submit the crash report each time it happens. I will hold onto the next one and post more details.

  • Software Updates 10.6.4 and Safari 5 -bugs??

These are downloaded successfully onto my Mac Book, but installation fails. The downloads cannot be expanded. The Mac Book suggests possible corruption during downloading. I tried updating on an encrypted wifi, and just to be more confident, over a LAN connection. This made no difference. Continuing experimentation, I then tried to download and install Safari directly from www.apple.com, but "Verification failed". I then tried to install the Opera browser, but again "verification failed". I then temporarily installed a small blog widget, www.google.com/macwidgets, which I knew to be a zip file requiring expansion as part of its installation on the Dashboard. This worked. I may not be comparing oranges with oranges, that is to say my experiments may be useless, with no reliable conclusions to be drawn. In my Time Machine, I went back about a month and tried again. Installation failed again, with the same information. I am uncertain if it is worthwhile to go back further. I thought of doing a reinstall from the Snow Leopard recovery discs, but this seems drastic and premature. I am starting to doubt the Mac, and are feeling the way I do whenever I use the unstable Windows Vista OS (ugh!).
As a Mac newbie, I am stymied.
Is there a problem with these upgrades? It appears so. All earlier upgrades have just worked, unlike the unnerving Windows failures I have previously endured...
    Cheers all,
    Keno

I had the exact problem you're having a year or so ago. The following are instructions were from AppleCare tech support. However, my OS was/is Tiger at the time & the instructions worked. Reason why I saved the instructions in case it occurs again.
Therefore, since you are using Snow Leopard, _*TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Look for the /var/db/.AppleTier3Language file. The file is in a hidden folder so
you'll need to do the following to look for it:
    1) In Finder, open the 'Utilities' folder in the 'Applications' folder and launch Terminal.app
    2) Enter the following line into the Terminal window and hit enter:
    *ls -a /var/db*
    3) This will print out a list of all the files in the folder. See if .AppleTier3Language is listed.
    *To Remove*
Removing it should allow you to install again.
Please enter the following command in Terminal to do so:
    *sudo rm /var/db/.AppleTier3Language*
Once you enter this command you will be prompted to enter an +administrator password.+ Do so and the command will complete.
Once that's done, give installing another go and tell us
    what happens.
    Good luck!

  • I have lost safari browsing, reinstalled it,  added update combo for lion and safari, now I don't have even have a drop down menu  under my apppleon the top tool, sometimes no responses to anything....stange garbled messages....reset safari many times...

How do I know what I am running....how do I know if I stillave snow leaopard, after I bought the lion updade 29.99, safari stopped browisng....nothing is rigt, lost lots of fucnctions...don't know where my browser is, don't have a druop donw menu under apple on tolbar.
RE installed 105.1 (orsomething,my appleico is blank), reinstalled safari  5.1.1, will not browse or searc....history or topsites picture windows anymore.....alll Icando is browse withyahoo, which I don't want. I don't know what a gmail counter is, or why  I have it all of a sudden, but can't get rid of it. Picasa rarel letmeclose it....what can I do?
    No Dock an more either.
Preferences. or services under apple icon, ust startup disk, restart, shutdown.

What you're describing makes no sense; it's a jumble of thoughts and supposed actions, but no concrete information to tell us anything.
If you downloaded Lion, that would not cause what you describe. If you had Snow Leopard running when you downloaded Lion, that also wouldn't cause what you describe. So you had to ahve done something to end up in this state. You say you reinstalled 105.1, but there is no such thing; more likely you mean Mac OS X 10.5, in which case you've answered your own questionn about having Snow Leopard installed anymore.
But if you did that, the question is why? Unless there was something catastrophic wrong with Snow Leopard, there would be no reason to reinstall Leopard. You also describe browsing with Yahoo, but that's not possible because Yahoo is not a browser. The Dock also does not just go "missing".
You're going to need to reinstall Leopard using the Archive & Install option, and then install Snow Leopard to get back to a usable state. If you have a backup from prior to when all these problems began, that's good. If not, then you will have to take your chances on losing all your data if this doesn't work.
Startup from your Leopard disc (if your system came with Leopard), choose your language, and then start the install process. Be sure to choose Archive & Install and Preseve Users and Network Settings before you start the installation. When it's done, let it restart and then check to be sure everything is in working order. If it is, put the Previous Systems folder in the Trash and empty it.
Then download the 10.5.8 Combo Update from the Apple web site and apply it. Restart and check to be sure everything is working.
Post back when you've done that.

  • When i conect iphone 4 to itunes using cable , its check for updates only for itunes and did not check updates for iphone 4 also when i press check for updates for iphone 4

itunes coud not check updates for iphone4 when i connect by cable only when i put iphone4 to AIR PLANE MODE

You must Restore the phone. It will probably only worth with an AT&T SIM, unless your friend had AT&T unlock it first. The phone may be jailbroken, also; one indication of this would be the app "Cydia" on the phone's Home screen. If it is the phone is most likely worthless to you.

  • I download latest software update for itunes and iphone. they successfully download, but then a message comes up saying unable to install as file has been corrupted. what is the cause?

I download latest updates for itunes and my iphone, when it comes to installing, it successfully downloads, but then i get a message for iphone software error=1403 file corrupted, and for itunes it downloads, then when i try to install it a message says unable to install software, file maybe corrupted!!

The iTunes update must be downloaded and installed before you try and use it to update the iPhone OS
Download iTunes 10.2.2 from here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1103
When it completes it will auto mount the disc image and show you the package installer, don't try and do anything with the file until it gets to this stage.
Once that's installed reboot the Mac, run iTunes, connect your iPhone and let it sync, then hit the update button and let it complete that step by itself (which will require a restart of the iPhone)

I accidentally hit the install software update on my IPad and I am not by my computer and won't be for 2 weeks.  Is there any way I can get my IPad off the picture of connecting to ITunes?

No. You must connect your iPad to a computer (it does not have to be yours) in order to restore it to factory settings.
Once you're home, you can restore it from a backup.
Any content that you did not backup has been lost.
