Software Update Questions

Hi everybody,
I'm still relatively green in the computer world, so, I'm sure these questions are way to "rookie" for you. Nevertheless; here they are.
Software Update Questions:
1. What is J2SE 5.0 Release 4, version 4.0 (39.3 MB) and, is it necessary to install?
2. What is X11 Update 2006, version 1.1.2 (51.0 MB) and, is it necessary to install?
In case you need to know, I have Mac OS X (10.4.8) with a Verizon FIOS connection.
Thanks,
Wayhun
iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

J2SE 5.0 is the latest version of Java. Mac OS X originally ships with Java 1.4 and this gives you the opportunity to upgrade to the latest version.
It's an optional upgrade since there are many changes between Java 1.4 and java 5, so some people might prefer to hold off until they've verified their Java apps work with the new version. For most people, though, it isn't an issue.
X11 (also known as XWindows) is a standard GUI interface for Unix systems. If you're using X11 you'd probably alredy know about it and therefore wouldn't be asking this question. It's not going to cause any problems if you update it, but it won't offer any advantage unless you're running X11-based applications.

  • Sceen Sharing and Software Update Questions

    Hello, I have two questions:
    1. When I use screen sharing through Back to my Mac, I'm having an issue with SS working with 2 monitors. When first starting up, SS show both monitors side by side. That works correctly. When I choose Monitor 1, for example, it shows Monitor 1 perfectly 1. The problem starts when I choose monitor 2. When I select it from the drop box, I have to click the screen for it to actually show the second screens monitor. Additionally, it will only show the active screen for monitor to. There is a "shadow" that is around the programs and I have to click around to make it work. Anyone else have this issue? Anything I can do?
    2. Pretty simple issue with software update. Software update is asking me to install HP printer drivers. I do have two HP printers connected through the network. I don't want to install the drivers on my Mac. I keep unchecking the box, but it keeps showing up when I run software update. Is there a way to stop it from showing entirely?
    Thanks!

I can help you with the second one.
Select the update you don't want to be reminded of, and then in the Software Update; Update menu bar, select *Ignore Update.* You can also get it to show again in the future if you want.

  • Software update question for iTunes and Safari

    Preface -
I only use the software update in the Apple to check for new software, then download it manually and install it following all the directions so carefully specified here by many of you good folks.
So, first some the rhetorical questions - How much does SU check? Does it look at other Apple apps running at the same time? Does it check OS (it must!)? Does it look to see if what it suggests needs to be updated is compatible with what is there?)
    Background information -
I have Safari 3.2.3. Since Safari doesn't work for me and I never use it, I have not updated it. Several of you told me not to bother updating Safari since v4x probably wouldn't work if 3 doesn't (what doesn't work is I can't quit without force quitting and there appears to be no fix).
The latest SU tells me new versions of iTunes - 9.0.3 - and Safari - 4.0.4 - are available. I am running iTunes 7.7. According to the download page, iTunes 9 has to have Safari 4.
    The questions -
So, why does SU tell me updates for iT and Safari are available without specifying that I MUST do both updates and do them so that Safari 4 is in place before I update iTunes (or iTunes will die?) Note - I never visit the iTunes store; I just use iTunes to transfer to my iPod my own CDs which I've copied onto the computer in lossless.
Since, I never use Safari anyway, will it cause any difficulty if I DO do the update to 4 and just let it sit in a folder unused as 3.2.3 sits there doing nothing? OR does iTunes USE Safari to access the library of CD track info when it makes suggestions for labeling tracks on CDs I've downloaded to my library?
I hope this makes sense, I fear I am rambling on here...
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Mrs H

    Dear Kappy,
First of all, thank you for tackling my issue with Safari. I have to begin by saying it was intermittent, but Mr H and I have just stopped using Safari. I just tried it and it was fine - but I don't know how long that will last.
And, by the way, we have the same issue occasionally for all three of our Tiger Macs - I have reinstalled OS, done the combo reinstall - OS plus Safari (I believe that's the term - combo?; it's been a while and I can't remember exactly what I was instructed here to do - but I did it).
You probably won't want to read all of this, but since you have been so kind as to jump onboard my Safari issue, here are the links to the 2 _very long_ threads, (part one and two), describing my issues with Safari:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1986914&tstart=0
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2037950&tstart=0
    Plus the third installment:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2097007&tstart=0
Klaus1 was ever so patient and the final advice, I believe, was - just don't use Safari. It was a memory hog - using what looked like even more than 100% of memory - which made no sense - and it just wouldn't allow me to quit without force quitting. Everything else works just fine...or so it seems to me and has done so for ages (except that we've been gone for several months so I can't count that...)
Do you suggest doing this first?
    Kappy wrote:
My guess is you have corrupted preference or cache files. Perhaps clearing out cache files and deleting related preference files may fix the problem.
I'm sure I was instructed to do this and have done so, but I'll gladly do it again. How to delete pref file? and will they rebuild?
Then can I do this suggestion of "deleting the latter 2" mentioned below, without learning how to open a new account - I used to know, but have gone brain dead on this... - or should I do this too? And, deleting them - will they rebuild?
Possibly in the /Home/Library/Safari/ folder or a problem with the /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.safari.plist file or /Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/ folder. Start by deleting the latter two.
Should someone move this discussion over to Safari?
Thank you again for offering your help here,
    Mrs H

  • Mountain lion software update questions

I have a couple of questions about the software update process in Mountain Lion.
I know that the old software update has been ditched and now updates will be routed through the app store instead, but could anyone tell me where the list of installed updates is located? I ask because under System Preferences > Software Update the default check boxes suggest that updates will be downloaded and installed automatically, which is all very well but I would like some kind of notification that they are being installed/have been installed or I will worry that I am missing them.
Secondly as another user reports here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19080258 the 'Last check' message remains frozen on the day I installed Mountain Lion, i.e. it says that the last check was yesterday (July 28th) even though I did a manual check today (29th).
    Thank you for your time

In the past,  I have taken certain larger upgrades from apple at non-peak hours (magically everything was installed quickly) other times I have taken large upgrades from apple at peak hours ( I took forever and I questioned what is going on) this could be the issue.  "server load" or your ISP (internet service provider)
    * peak hours (when a lot of people are off work down loading the newest os or applications)

  • Software updating question......

Hello, question about updating software for you folks. When there is new software available I usually install it promptly, but here is the question I have. The last few times it has checked for new software there is a digital camera update for compatibility. I have been unchecking it from the list so it does not install since I never plan on owning any of the cameras that are on the list.
    1. Is this a good idea or should I just install it?
    2. If not, is there any way to remove it from the list or will it keep popping up every time?
    Thanks guys,
    Steve

You can tell Software Update to not bother you about a specific update.
Just remember that you did this with certain updates, such as QuickTime updates you do not want. iTunes depends on QuickTime, which depends on OS version, and so on. You may end up needed the update in the future, but it won't appear in Software Update because you had ignored it a while ago and forgot, not remembering to reset the ignored updates.

  • Software Update Question

Hi, I have only a dial up connection. Is there anyway to make the Software update app. just resume downlaoding after a disconnect? ie: just pick up where it left off. Right now I have to start all over/ I know there should be a way to do it but I can't find it.
    Thanks.

    hiya there,
a part of a file is always saved, but I don't think you can disconnect and lateron pick up where you left. Now I know, even under dial up this was never the case. When you look in e.g. your firefox cache, a picture may be called "0EA2229E". Empty the cache and open the very same webpage again, and that picture might now be stored as "1EY1111E" etc.
So whilst you may well be able to interrupt your download, the next time you log on, the "fresh" software update connection may not recognise the previous chunk (which may actually disappear / delete itself on closing software update unfinished).
I think, for your system's sake the best way is to update in one go, to ensure the update is free from corruptions.
If you are after the 10.5.5 combo update, can you not do it at a friends' or alternatively telephone apple support?
    Good luck

  • Check For Software Update Question

I don't think this is a problem, but up until this morning, every time I tapped on Software update/Check new, I would get the message Checking for new software available, then I would get one of two messages. Either No software update available, or a message like No connection available.
Since this morning, I get the message Checking for new software available, then it just goes away and I don't get any other messages. I went to Verizon and the rep I talked to tried it and his did the same thing. Any one else noticed this change?

I am starting the 2nd day of this exact action on my TB.  I'm 67 yoa and when my 2 yr. contract is up I will be seriously considering dropping my wireless service.  I like gadgets, however, I survived without wireless for 45+ years and I think I can live without it for my time remaining on God's beautiful earth as,for me, a cell phone is now nothing but a gadget.  If someone wants me, they can get a hold of me after I get home from my motorcycle ride.

  • N78 software update question?

    Hi guys,
I want to ask you about some misunderstoodment regareding the latest software for this devise. When i go to Nokia and check if there is a new firmware for my N78 by entering product code it says that the firmware version is the same as mu current now (12.046).The thing is that i can see that there is a newer firmware update (20.149) again shown by Nokia in their latest features, applications and improvements page. Why is this occurring?
P.S.I am not experiencing any problems for now with 12.046 and i like to follow the quote  "If it works, don't fix it" and i am hearing that after this update many users find  more new bugs after that but someday Nokia will release a stable firmware which i will gladly install
    Cheers
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

latest firmware version for the N78 is 21.002 not 20.149. there is also a v30 rumoured to be released in the coming weeks. the reason you are getting the message that 12.046 is the latest version for your handset is because your handset is a branded variant (i.e. your network operator has their customisations, logos, wallpapers etc all over it). therefore you may or may not get the 21.002 update for your phone. this is dependent on your operator, as they are provided the newest firmware by Nokia and are given the choice whether or not to customise it to their own tastes, then allow Nokia to release it through either the Nokia Software Updater or FOTA channels. i would suggest haggling your operator to see if they are indeed planning to release 21.002, or have v30 in the works for you. if not, then you will have to give written permission for you to move to generic firmware, after which you can take your phone to your local Nokia Care Centre and they will do this for you.  let us know how it goes.
please throw some kudos our way, it would mean a lot to us
If you found this or someone's comments helpful or like what that person has to say, please give some Kudos to their post!

  • Ios 4 software update questions

Apple is touting the ios 4 software update as having "100 new features". Can anyone list some of them besides the 12 they highlight on the webpage?
Further, can anyone link to the new ios4 sotware user manual?

Nope. That would violate the NDA.
Besides Google, here (this is actually worthless, as Google is much better):

  • Storm 2 Software Update Question

Is there a way to tell what a software update will fix before I update my device?  I am running 5.0.0.607 and got an update notification to update to .713.  I want to know what it will change before I do it in-case it doesn't affect me and screw something else up.
    Thanks

It is intended for the iPhone to be activated in order to install firmware updates and/or to restore an iPhone with iTunes if needed or wanted, which re-installs the current firmware version. iPod Touch owners are required to pay a small fee for firmware updates.
A few people here have reported they were able to install a firmware update and/or restore their iPhone with iTunes with a non-activated iPhone with the SIM card that was used when the iPhone was activated remaining in the iPhone.

  • A Tiger Software Update Question from the iBook Forum

I just finished reading this question,
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12901184#12901184
in the iBook G4 forum and am very curious myself if this could be a problem with the update. If someone knows why this is happening, would you please help the poor guy with two dead iBooks?
    Thanks,
    Randy

I'm sorry, I didn't mean that the other member's question was solved, only my part in it. That must have been confusing. I should go back to mark it unsolved.
I subscribe to the iBook G4 forum and when this question came up, I looked through other forums to try to find an answer for him/her. The Tiger forum seemed like the logical place to post the question. It looks like the right person came to the rescue! Thanks. Discussions members have helped me out by networking like this, so it's great to be able to return the many favors.

  • IPAD SOFTWARE UPDATE QUESTION

I AM TRYING TO UPDATE MY SOFTWARE FOR IPAD. I TRIED VIA ITUNES BUT IT TELLS ME THAT THE VERSION I HAVE (5.1.1) IS CURRENT, THIS DOESNT SOUND RIGHT.  I HAVE AN OLDER IPAD MODEL MB292LL???

Because the outdated processor does not have the capacity to run the updated iOS.
It's a shame that the app developers don't make the previous versions available so that people can actually use the iPad
I gave mine to my daughter, so our grandson could use it, but she can't put anything on it, because all of the updated apps need the updated iOS. It's now basically a paperweight.

  • Help needed, N79 Software-Update Question...

Hi! I have just received a white Nokia N79 from a friend from Germany. The phone is almost new, it was not at all in use and it works pretty vell with my Vodafone Card here in Romania. The problem is, it"s Special Software Version is 10.045.217.4  and I would like to know if I should update to the latest Software Version or not...
Any help would be much apreciated. Thanks in advance

It just means that you have the latest available updates installed. If any new update is released for your phone's product code, it will automatically show on Ovi Suite if you are connected to the internet.

  • Software updates question

I am getting ready to do Aprils updates, so I do a check for updates to see what is needed. I notice in my search the I need KB2952664? how can that be if I deployed that in October of 2014 and 5 other workstations. That KB reported 92 Percent Compliant
and 5 were required (which mine is one of them) how or can I redeploy that KB 2952664 again? With the new April 2015 package. Thanks.

Only the metadata of that specific update was updated and not the content. That means it's not required to be reinstalled. See for more information:
