Software Update Running at 100%

I'm having an issue where the software update process is running at almost 100% CPU constantly...not only that but I have nine instances of software update running. When I try to "kill" any one of the processes, the other software update processes that are running start to consume more CPU.
I'm not the only person at my company who's having the problem. I have another person who's on a Power Book G4 running 10.4.9 who encountering the same problem. I started to notice this problem after upgrading to 10.4.9, so I think that may be part of the problem, but am not totally sure.
Anyone else experiencing this problem or know how to fix it?

Actually, I had already tried disabling software update and then killing the processes.
After some more research the I found that the process "softwareupdate" was not coming from Apple's Software update, it's a child process of aex-pluginmanager (Altiris Agent for Mac 6.2) After I killed the process for the Altiris agent and then killed the software update process the problem went away.
As I suspected this problem started right after we upgraded to 10.4.9, so I'm pretty sure that there's something that the Altiris Agent doesn't like about 10.4.9.

Now, iTunes won't launch and can't be updated. Please help.
If I have lost my music collection I will be switching platforms ASAP. It is insane that Apple has updates seemingly every day for their products.

I was in your same situation with 14 downloads and 14 attempts.
You have to make sure that your Mac is booting into 64 bit mode.  You can make sure of this by going into System Preferences and scrolling down to 'Software' and making sure that you are booding with 64 bit Kexts.
If not, restart while holding the 6 and 4 keys down until you see the spinning gear wheel and try installng again.
BUT, what I also did was to go into Applications, click on the Lion installer, Get Info, and give yourself custom priviliges to Read And Write.
I did this simultaneously, and I don't know what function did it, but it worked for me, with no further downloads of the installer.
    Good luck!

  • The update could not be verified. It may have been corrupted during downloading. The update will be downloaded and checked again the next time that Software Update runs.

How can I solve this? Every time I have the option to update an application I receive the same notification: "The update could not be verified. It may have been corrupted during downloading. The update will be downloaded and checked again the next time that Software Update runs"

Can we eliminate one minor possibility: are you in the UK and using Virgin Media cable connection? I ask because the latest 'Superhub' firmware is corrupting large downloads for some people.

  • Latest update returns error " None of the selected updates could be installed. The update could not be expanded, and may have been corrupted during downloading. The update will be downloaded and checked again the next time that Software Update runs."

Which latest update? Details get answers. Rather than using SU, DL and install from http://support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • Software Update Runs Every Time I Boot Up

As soon as I updated OS X to 10.5.8, the Software Update runs every time I boot my MacBook. This occurs even though the "Check for Updates" option is NOT selected (in System Preferences|Software Update).
This indicates (to me) that, since Software Update is not working properly, I can no longer trust that my machine has the current updates.
    Any ideas???

It's probably in your login items. Launch Software Update, right-click its Dock icon, and ensure +Open at login+ is unchecked.

  • Software update runs every login

Everything I login to 10.5.1 software update runs and tells me "no updates available". This is anytime I login. If I logout of a session and log back in the sofware update runs again. Reboot same thing. What up?
    Ken-

Thanks. When I go into accounts and choose login items. There are two items and both have checks next to them indicating "hidden". One of them is Software Updates. Neither of them can be removed because there is no button for remove. Right clicking or control clicking just gives "reveal in finder".
Is there a specific process to remove them?

  • Software Update Runs VERY slowly

    Hi folks
I have several intel iMac's running 10.6.2 that take an eternity to update themselves from our local SUS server. Everything seems to be lagged quite noticeably. It takes 30 seconds or so from the time you run Software Update to get the progress bar coming up. Any updates seemingly download a chunk at the usual speeds you'd expect from a local SUS server, pause for a while, download some more, etc. The whole process can take 30+ minutes which just isn't right for a local SUS.
Browsing the logs, I can see the following:

I'm told this is no big deal, but the following may be of more interest:

suhelperd sounds like something related to Software Update. What does this mean exactly and how can it be fixed?
    TIA

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • Software Update runs every time I reboot (with Sys Pref box unchecked)!

I have gone to System Preferences and unchecked the Software Update box so it won't run automatically, but every time the computer starts it loads software update. Is there somewhere else I need to disable this?
    Thanks!
    Imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

System Prefs->Accounts->your account->login items and ensure that there's nothing there WRT software update. If nothing's there, then reset Software Update, go to ~/Library/Preferences/ and select the com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist file, CMD+I, and lock it. Restart and see if that fixes things. Finally, some Apple apps have a check for updates automatically option. If checked, that might be triggering SU.

  • Software Update runs every time I log in

How do I stop software update from running every time I log in? I have it set to check for updates weekly (the default), but it starts up every time I log in.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
It might be a corrupted .plist.
    First try this:
Uncheck the box for checking for updates.
    Reboot
See if the problem still occurs.
If so, create a new temporary admin account and see if the problem occurs with the new user.

Have a look in your System Preferences > Software Update and where is says *Check for Updates*, it may be set to Daily.
Change that to another period, or deselect it entirely.

  • Why won't my software update run?

I am trying to run a spftware update on my Imac (I am running OS X Lion 10.7.2) and when I attempt to download the updates I get the message:
"None of the selected updates could be saved.
A network error has occurred. Check your Internet connection, and then try again"
I know that I am connected to the internet as I am able to view any webpage I need to, but just not able to do updates, any idea what this could be??
    Thanks for the help

Ok...  try a standalone download instead...
Try Safari first >  Safari 5.1.2
If that installs ok, now download this one >  iTunes 10.5.2
Then the Java / Lion >  Java for OS X Lion Update 1
Then here >  Canon Printer Drivers v2.7 for OS X

  • Safari not opening after software update,  running slow.   Rookie Mac user,  any suggestions?

Is there a way to restore before update was installed?

Ok, got safari to open, start page is no longer automatically opening.  When open a new tab, toolbar is missing address and search bar. When I go to customize the toolbar, the words"address and search" are there, but the bar is missing.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I can't help with your issue as a general problem, but for the specific update to OS X 10.6.6, I'd download the updater directly from http://support.apple.downloads, then install it from the ".dmg" file. The specific links will be either
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1349 for the "combo" update or
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1343 for the update from OS X 10.6.5.

  • HT1222 iLife apps fail to launch after running latest Software Update

    Hello,
I ran the Software Update (running Snow Leopard on a MBP) on Feb 6 which updated Remote Desktop (never use it) and also had a Security Update 2012-001 v1.1
Used Mail and Safari successfully after that but noticed Opera failing to launch. Thought it was an issue with Opera so didn't pay it much mind.
Tonight (Feb 7) I wanted to off load photos from my phone and discovered that iPhoto wouldn't launch and neither will iTunes. I haven't seen any other discussions related to this, but if there is one, please point me in that direction. Cheers.

    Miriam,
I read the selection in MacFixit and went through the steps that they suggested.
I even downloaded MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.10PPC.dmg and when I went to re-install it the program Installer quit unexpectedly in the same manner that Safari, Mail, and Software Update did.
I also noted that when I tried to start either Safari or Mail using the terminal (I don't have much expertise in this area) they stated that there was a segmentation fault
Here is what was on the terminal screen:
Last login: Tue Jul 17 12:28:25 on ttyp1
    /Applications/Utilities/Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/Installer; exit
    Welcome to Darwin!
    wilbur-purdues-imac-g5:~ wilbur$ /Applications/Utilities/Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/Installer; exit
    Segmentation fault
    logout
    [Process completed]
It seems that I can install other programs using Installer, but I cannot do the upgrade. Maybe I have the wrong file.
Thanks for the support so far.
