Software Update screwed it all up!

I have a powermac G3 machine, running a 500 MHZ G4 chip, 640 RAM, OS X 10.3.9.
I recently downloaded the newest Software Update (including the Airport update, around March 26). My machine, which has been working beautifully for years (probably because in the past I specifically haven't downloaded the updates for fear of what just happened), is now officially messed up.
The computer no longer recognizes any of the cards I have installed in the back, I.E. my wireless 8011 card is gone, as well as my USB 2 card; both used to work fine.
Why ever download updates if all they do is cause problems?? Any help would be appreciated. I don't believe there is a way to restore macs to a previous state, which would be the best thing to do.

Sad to say now, but that's why us "oldtimers" always recommend backing the system up before installing an update, especially a large one. In VersionTracker or MacUpdate you can find a variety of packages that can "clone" your system out onto another drive and, should things go wrong, you can clone it back. My personal favorite is SuperDuper.

Your apps will only be where you put them.  if you failed to put them on your computer beore updating, then they would certainly be gone.
    You can redownload them:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • 10.5.8 Software update screws permissions

I had a recent disk crash on my MacBook, so bought a new hard-disk for it. I installed OSX with the original disks that I have. That is to say I did the following:
    Install 10.4 with 2 disks
Upgrade to 10.5 with the official upgrade disk
All seems to work fine at this stage. So I installed some additional software and everything works fine. Then I did the Apple Software Update (from the menu in the top left corner). Amongst other things, this installs Safari 4.0.3 and upgrades the OS version to 10.5.8.
Next time I boot up, I find out that Firefox doesn't load up. Some searching around the net and I find out that this might be related to disk permission problems. It's at this time that I discover that I am unable to create any new folders on my Desktop. The error reported when I try to is:
The operation could not be completed
An unexpected error occurred (error code -8058)
I run Disk Utility, and find a few hundred disk permission problems. "Repair Disk Permissions" button reports that it fixes all issues, but running the check again finds just as many violations.
To make sure that it wasn't something i did, I formatted the disk again, and re-installed the OS. But applying the updates screws up my permissions again.
So: the underlying problem appears to be with permissions. This manifests itself in several ways, including this problem with my desktop. To repeat, I cannot interact with the desktop itself (the computer background), although I can access it via the Finder. (e.g. Any USB files I add to the system don't appear on the desktop, but do appear in the desktop directory in the Finder).
Other problems that I've found (I suspect this is not an exhaustive list):
    - Cannot redeploy DMG files (I tried to download and redeploy MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.8.dmg after finding suggestions that this might fix my problems). I then found that other DMG files don't work!
    - Some programs (most notably Firefox) simply won't open (even in safe-mode).
Does anybody have any ideas as to what might be going wrong? And how I can fix it?
It can't be a compatibility problem with the specific hard-disk that I replaced - can it?
    Thanks,

    Thanks Kappy.
I followed this technique on my third re-installation with no success. I did it a fourth time, and instead of running the unified 10.5.8 update, I ran each of the 10.5.x updates individually. (10..5.1 followed by 10.5.2 etc.) This frustrating and time-consuming work-around seemed not to replicate the problem again, and I've been running happily for 2 weeks since.
However, after attempting to install a third party application tonight (a free app from the Web that I hoped would help me re-import my lost iTunes library from my iPod, an application I hasten to add, which I need because iTunes itself won't let me recover my library from my iPod), the whole system hung again, crashing the Finder app. After an leaving the system alone for an afternoon in order to allow Finder to recover itself, I forced a reboot. Now I find that I am unable to write anything to my desktop again. The original problem is back!!
I'm very frustrated at the moment as I am unable to pin down the cause exactly. Certainly however, there is something very unstable about the MacBook's setup! I'm pretty sure it's down to one of the following:
    1) The OS has some kind of allergy to the particular brand of hard-disk that I've put into my MacBook after the original crash. This I find fairly unlikely, although I'd like to hear someone else's opinions and experiences on similar matters.
    2) 10.5.8 has a bug in it. My chief suspects are the reported disk permission issues, much discussed in these forums. I strongly suspect that they are not quite as innocent as Apple make them out to be: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
I'm going to reinstall my OS for the 5th time now. I will only upgrade the OS to 10.5.7 and run with that for a while to see what happens. If I run happily for a month with this setup, I would very much like to report this as a 10.5.8 'issue' to Apple. Does anyone know how I can do this in an official capacity?

It was a list of about five updates, but the one that stands out is the Lion OS X complete update - I think.

  • HT4623 Can I update 3 iPhones with the latest software update that are all on thr same iTunes account?

I kept all my iPhones after I upgrading to the latest one each time my 2 year contract was up so I have an iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 & iPhone 4S. I actually still use all 3 phones for different purposes. My iphone 3gs is not activated, but I still use it for apps among other things when connected to wifi. My iphone 4 & 4s are both activated with 2 saparete phone numbers, but I have all 3 devices on the same iTunes account. I never noticed this to be a problem until just recently when I was thinking about selling one of my iphones since I'm now due to upgrade again to the iPhone 5.  Well my problem is that when the latest iphone software update came available I noticed that all 3 iPhones had a notification letting me know that there was a new update available & I didn't want to update my iphone 4 & 4S until I had a recent back-up on my pc just incase anything went wrong like once before. Referring to the last time I updated my iphone 4s for some reason right in the middle of the update it lost connection. So I had to restore my entire phone from scratch & because I didn't check to make sure that had a recent back up right before I updated I ended up losing a lot of important information. So anyway since my iphone 3GS I knew had a recent back up & plus it doesn't have a lot of important information stored on it I chose to go ahead & update it first. Then later on when I went to update my other two iPhones I noticed the notification that was there before on all my phones to let me know the update was available was now gone & it would not give me the option to update either of my other two phones. I don't know if this is true or not, but I was later told that Apple will only let you download the free update software on only one device on each iTunes account & since I have all 3 devices on one itunes account I could only choose to update one. I didn't know this beforehand so I used the update on my 3GS which I barely use except to play with on wifi & now my other two iPhones which are the main ones I use are both activated now function very slow & constantly crash. Also if I was to choose to sale one of the iPhones without the latest software update on it does that mean that the new owner will not be able to get the latest update meaning the phone would be out of date without having that latest software installed? If anyone knows how to help me fix this or give some advice I would really appreciate!!

    That's utter non-sense.
Just connect your 4 & 4S, iTunes running, & hit the "Check for Updates" button, or you can update directly on the phones(if running iOS 5.0 or higher): Settings>General>Software Update.
iOS 6.1.3 is the current iOS version for both phones.

  • Ran software update and now all my bookmarks are gone.

I ran a software update and when I opened Safari I noticed all my bookmarks are gone. I located the Bookmarks.plist and it shows nothing of my old (2 1/2 years worth of) bookmarks in it. Is there any way I can get them back or am I toast?
    Any help would be great.

    You may be toast.
Do you have any backups of your system, or at least your user library file?
Have you used Spotlight to search your system? The installer via Software Update updates the app, however leaves the Safari folder in the User Library alone. If for some reason you moved this folder, a new one would be created when you started up Safari after the update.
    Please post back.

  • I did the software update and now all the ATV does is have a blinking light.  On my TV there was the "notes" and the new cable shown.  I tried the restart (metal remote) Menu and down button and nothing happened.

I did the software update and after downloading and loading the ATV just hung-up with a fast blinking white light on the front of ATV.  Tried a reset with the remote - Menu /downkey and nothing happened.  Is the software corrupt or did it wipe out my ATV?

Apple TV 1st generation or 2nd?
I would try plugging in the HDMI from the ATV to a different HDMI port on your TV and even trying the ATV on a different TV altogether...sounds like the HDMI port on your TV might be bad or a bad connection. Keep in mind you'll need to switch the TV input to the new HDMI port

  • Ipod software update screwed my Ipod up.

I went into settings, then the "general" section. When I went to get the software update, the screen went immeaditatly blank. It is also not registering onto my computer.

    Try:
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod
To allow a restore you may have to place the iPod in Recovery mode.
Also, if you can't turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for at least an hour try a reset, and restore.

  • After performing software update, I lost all my data

I upgraded to the most recent software, when it finished, I got a message to connect to iTunes.  Everything was gone.  My only option was to restore to factory settings.  Even though I had the iPad set up to back up to iCloud, the only backup available was one from my computer from April.  This really stinks.  Why don't they warn you how dangerous it is to update your software.

Setup as new and restore from iCloud backup.
    Restore from iCloud Backup
    1. Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings
    2. Tap Erase
    3. You'll see Apple logo and progress bar

  • Software update disturbed and all pictures gone. can i restore them?

iphone 4s was updating its software and in the middle of backing up the data, someone took out the phone from the plug. mostly all of my pictures are gone. can i restore them?

THis is pure BS!!  How can Apple not code for a potential failure in a backup procedure?  What are they thinking, that everything works perfectly and never a glitch in any system?  I am in the process of backing up my pics, and they innocently ask if I want the new OS.  I say yes thinking it is a 2 minute process, they completely wipe everytthing off my phone and I don't even think I got the upgrade.  I am so ****** off I can't even look to see what version I am on.
Please don't tell me I should have backed up... That is what I was doing when Apple wiped my phone data.

  • Mac-formatted ipod software updated under windows - all files vanished

    Hi.
I just accidentally upadted my iPod Software under windows, but I have a Mac-formatted iPod. Now I can't find any of my files anymore., even though the ipod is still filled with 27 GB of data. Is there any way to reverse this and get my files back or do I have to restore the ipod and thus erase everything? any suggestions would be appreciated...
    cheers,

Hello all, I figured I'd join in.....sorry, no help here, I am also looking for an answer. I too have a 5G 60GB and it was formatted for Mac, I tried accessing it through xplay2 in Itunes and accidently updated it (Windows XP.) Now it just runs in a continuous loop of rebooting itself, most likely until the battery dies???....doesn't look good for the home team... any beta would be appreciated.

  • Software update screws up calendar synch! Help!

This is the second Blackberry where I have updated operating software and now 86 recurring calendar entries are really messed up.  I have to deal with all 86 or else stop synching.  Help!! How do I prevent this and how can I achieve a global fix?

Hello brucehaines and welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
Can you elaborate on how the appointments are being messed up? Are they duplicating on your device? Are you getting any error when you are trying to sync?

  • New Software Update screwed up my Q5

Last week my Q5 conected to my WiFi, by itself!! and downloaded that new update. Many things changed that weren't a big deal BUT it also screwed up my view. By that I mean is "everthing" needs to be re-sized down to be able to read it. So if a text comes in, it is so large that the reply type bar does not show up. It's a bitch to have to try and re-size "every time" without hiting something unintended. I had it working perfectly. Blackberry!!! I want a fix for this or I'll ship it back and post the worst online rant you have ever heard.
If anyone has a fix for this that doesn't involve shipping it back, I'd love to hear it.
    Cheers, with Canadian Beer. :-)

    Hi @dboppre
Thanks for reaching out about this issue.
To confirm, after upgrading to BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.3.1, your display was magnified. After turning off Magnify mode, the issue was resolved but after restarting your device the issue returned?
If this is accurate do you mind gathering logs for me as well doing a quick test and letting me know the results?
    How to gather logs;
    Open the Help App
Swipe down from the top of the screen, tap Create Report
    Tap Save Log Snapshot
If prompted to upload logs, tap No
After doing this, open the File Manage app and navigate to documents\logs. Within you should see a file along the lines of bbswltLog<date>.zip.
Tap and hold this file followed by tapping Share and finally tap your email address. Send the log to the email address I’ve sent you via private message.
After gather logs, can you answer the following as well?
After turning off Magnify mode the first time, how did you restart your device? Did you press and hold the power button for 10+ seconds, or did you press the power button followed by tapping Restart on your display?
If you disable Magnify mode again and restart your device, does the issue come back again?
If the issue comes back, create another set of logs and send them in for review.
    Thanks!
