Software update screwed me too. Can I update from 9.2?

Hey guys,
I've been running Tiger on a G4 with no problems at all. After trying numerous times to install an PowerPC update that would freeze at the very end of installation, it finally finished and I restarted. Now, I get past the gray Apple and spinning gear thingy, but when the blue background with the staus bar comes up, it freezes without any progress on the staus bar. I'm sure it's something that I did or did not do correctly. However, I also have OS 9.2 on the machine which allows me to go in and access all my stuff. My question is: Can I download a stand alone installer while in 9.2 and have it update my version of Tiger or does it not work that way? To make it worse, I can't find my Tiger disc. The only restore discs I have are all pre-cat.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Well, I wouldn't use OS 9 unless you just need to salvage all of your personal data. Let's try to troubleshoot OS 10 and get it booting first before we use OS 9.
You have a few options here. The first, would be to boot into safe mode. You can do this by holding down the shift key during startup. This let's OS 10 boot in it's minimal form - so whatever is causing a conflict in the full startup may be resolved by doing a minimal startup. Safe boot also runs a behind-the-scenes disk check, so if it boots successfully, there is a chance that rebooting normally again would be successful.
If the reboot after safemode isn't successful, try booting in safemode again. Once you reach the desktop, go to your OS 10 hard drive and open Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility. Disk Utility will allow you to repair the permissions on your drive, hopefully solving the problem. Once Disk Utility is open, select the volume from the left menu that contains OS 10 on it, and then from the +first aid+ tab select +repair permissions+. Once complete, go ahead and reboot normally and see if that fixes it.
If it still won't boot, we have one more option besides you purchasing an install disk. You can boot into single user mode and run fsck. You can boot into single user mode by holding command+s at startup. This will bring you to a UNIX prompt, in which you can run a built-in disk utility. Here is a link to the step-by-step process you should take in running fsck. You can scroll right down to "use fsck".

I hope this helps! Good luck, and let me know if you have anymore questions!

    Hi,
I'd start with running a "Software Updates Scan Cycle" from the configuration manager control panel applet and check the log file Windowsupdate.log, WUAhandler.log.

  • Point a client to get software updates from the local OS X Server

I have an OS X Server that's serving only clients as a File Share device that I would like to use for Software Updates. There are three Mac Clients and a bunch of iOS clients. How do I use Software updates from the Server? I read the instructions on configuration but have the following questions:
Where do I find the correct port and catalog file name?
The instruction specify a port of 8088 and a catalog of 'index.sucatalog" in the example. Is this always the case?
I can write to the .plist specified but cannot read from it (get an error). I can see that the file has been written and the data is correct. What's wrong?

Apple's Software Update Server only provides updates for Apple Mac software. It does not provide updates for Mac Applications via the AppStore nor does it provide any updates for iOS devices.
Apple's Caching Server works differently. When a Mac or iOS device on your network requests an update from either the Mac AppStore or the iOS AppStore this will then be 'cached' on the server so that next time a device requests the same update it is available locally.
The URL for a local Software Update Server would be of the form
    http://server.domain.com:8088/index.sucatalog
This would be written on a client Mac as follows
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://server.domain.com:8088/index.sucatalog
It would be read on a client Mac as follows
    defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL
Note: Older versions of OS X had a version of the defaults command which did not like you including the file extension of the plist file so in the past the following would fail.
    defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist CatalogURL

Thanks for the straightforward tip. I had restarted once already, but the second time was a charm. The install button now works. Don't know if it mattered, but I also repaired disk permissions and then restarted in safe mode this time.
The printer driver is apparently a different issue in itself. It turns out that the my printer, the HP Deskjet F380, has some fluke that makes it incompatible in 10.6. A new driver is coming out from HP according to Rickmeister in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10076690&#10076690
In case anyone else has the same problem with the F380: Like the user in the aforementioned thread, I downloaded and installed the old HP drivers for 10.5, and now at least I can print in the meantime.

It is their product, not Oracle's product.

  • HT1338 How can I start a software update from scratch?  error states that it was corrupted during transfer but when it starts over later, it still give the same error

Software updates tells me it needs to download and install a new version of itunes.  When this notice first appeared the download started but stopped after about 34 MB and said the download was corrupted.  Later (after many restarts), the notice appears again but the download starts where it left off and immediately gives me the message that it is corrupted.  How do I force the download to start over from scratch?

Check the version you're being offered, and go to Apple Support Downloads.
Read the info on the update and decide if you actually need it. (if your OS version is 10.6.4 as shown in your info, I doubt that you will need it at all).
The latest update I can find for iTunes is here; http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1426

    Hi guys!!
First of all, please, excuse my english......i know it's the worst possible and will try to develop it.
    My question is the following.
The hard disk of my xServe is almost full and I need to delete the old Apple Software Udates that it contains (some of them are from 2005!!)
And I don´t know how to make it!!
I`ve uncheck the "automatically enable copied updates" option in Server Admin and I´ve check-in the "Purge unused/legacy software", but i don´t know how to delete the oldest Apple Software Updates because I don´t know where the **** are they!!
    Thank's in advance from Spain.

    You could try what
s in <http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9289958#9289958>, or, as this is a new setup which isn't in use, you could just nuke the system and reinstall and this time use the correct DNS name.

  • How can I remove Apple Software update from Programs in Control Panel. I grt a message that there is an error in Windows Installer Package?

I get this message: "A program required for this install to complete could not be run.
There is a problem with this Windows Installer Package". OS, Windows 7-64

Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (The results from mydigitallife and Major Geeks are worth checking.)
After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC, and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • 24" iMac won't install any 'large' Apple software updates from the internet

I am having a serious issue with my iMac and neither the people on the phone at Apple Care or the 'Geniuses' at the Genius Bar have been able to assist. So, maybe someone here can:
First - here is the background information about what happened and what I've done:
A few weeks ago when the new iTunes 10 came out I went to upgrade. The upgrade failed it said. So, I thought perhaps Apple was having issues with the new software or something. So, I thought - Ok, I'll give it a day or two.
I come back and try again from Apple.com - no luck. Hmmmm - well, I just happened to see my 'software update' icon pop up and there was iTunes. I thought "Great! Now I'm sure it'll install!" No luck.
So, I think - well, perhaps I've done something to corrupt my profile. So, I create a new profile and try again. No dice.
So now I'm really confused and figure - ok, let me try a partition and I'll try again. Still nothing.
Finally I figure - ok, something is wrong here. So, since nothing is working I backup my music and important files and wipe out the hard drive and start over. No luck. And, in fact - since I had gone back to 10.5.4 or whatever - software updates needed to install to get me back to 10.5.5. Those wouldn't install through software updates OR when downloaded from Apple.com - Smaller downloads like, flash, java, firefox, etc - all download and install without issue.
I decided to engage "Apple Care" and they call me at the time I specified and we begin to do some tests on the hardware and everything came back ok. We tried from Apple.com and software updates again - still won't install the software. Keeps coming back with "Software installation failed" something about the package installer was corrupted during downloading.
The guy at Apple care thinks perhaps its my network corrupting something. This begins to make a little sense and I think, maybe he's right. My wireless router isn't that great so, maybe I'll just go replace it. However, while I'm checking out I begin to think that maybe its NOT my wireless router - because I do have 2 other computers in my house who haven't had issues downloading anything. So, this is unlikely. But, I didn't like the wireless router anyway - so I went ahead with the purchase.
I get it home - set it up and try again. STILL not working. So, I make an Appointment at the "Genius Bar". I take it in - show them the screen shots of the errors and we get started. They try to do the install of either iTunes or the combo update on THEIR network - still won't work. The genius thinks I have a bad HD and takes the computer for 2 days to look at it.
I finally get to go pick it up - excited that I'll have my iMac (which I use for work) back and functioning again. I go pick it up and they decided that it wasn't my hard drive - but likely my RAM. They couldn't prove it was the RAM but figured since I bought the RAM after I bought the iMac that this must be the issue (even though it was up to exact Apple standards and was from Crucial). So, I think - well, while I have a blank slate I'll go ahead and install Snow Leopard. So, I pick up Snow Leopard and get new RAM too and go home to install.
I get the computer home, put the new RAM in, install snow leopard and get ready to work! After snow leopard install is done - it has some new updates it needs to install. And the update FAILS to install again. Oh, and they never replaced the HD.
So, I call Apple Care again - they have no clue. They suggest making an Apple Genius Bar appointment. So, I take it in again. They run diagnostics on it from their 'Triage' external hard drive and everything checks out. He says its probably the hard drive (same conclusion they came to the first time) and said that they would replace it.
I get the computer back - take it home. Everything is up to date. All the software updates were back in place including iTunes 10. However, I still want to test and see if I can download iTunes and/or do updates. So, I uninstall iTunes and download it again. Same problem. STILL won't install any large software downloads. But, again - Smaller downloads like, flash, java, firefox, etc - all download and install without issue. Just no core Apple updates or things like iTunes will download and install on my iMac.
I then took it to a friends house - set it up on his network - same issue.
    So to sum up:
I have re-imaged the hard drive several times
    I have replaced the ram
I have replaced my networking hardware (even though other machines on the network have no issues)
I have taken it in twice to the Genius Bar and they still haven't fixed it
The Problem followed the machine and exhibited the same issues in store as it did in my home (so we know the problems stays with the machine)
I have tried it on yet a 3rd network and the issue still exists
The people at the Genius Bar told me that If I still have issues then its with my network - even though its been proven it wasn't.
Its only larger downloads like Combo Updates and iTunes that won't install.
Any ideas? Sorry for the long post but its been quite an ordeal.

Yes, I have tried the updates directly from the Apple website and a different issue occurs. When I do that I get various different errors - the most common saying 'Codec overrun'. This has happened both before and after complete software OS reinstalls (Completely wiping the HD clean).
I did a video of my issue on my iPhone. I had to cut it and compress it to get it off my phone without syncing (because I can't sync it since I can't get iTunes installed now). So, its about a minute long if anyone wants to see it:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8leWwEoIeXI
And yes, we tried to repair permissions a couple times but didn't seem to have any effect on whether it would install these updates. Again, it's NOT all software downloads/installs. It seems to be limited to LARGER pieces of software. Example: Firefox, Flash, Java and Silverlight have all downloaded and installed without error on my iMac. Apple combo updates and iTunes won't install at all.

  • Timeout issues with Software Update from Satellite ISP

Anyone had any experiences with resolving latency issues and/or what my ISP claims is "long ping times" causing timeout s with OS 10.4x Software Update?
I've had continuing issues with timeouts since changing ISP's to a satellite ISP here in Australia -- with our Macs seeming to be particularly sensitive.
    - Can't access Software Update as it times out
    - Same problems with some web sites
    - Page loading can hang up and fail to complete, particularly if the page contains lots bells and whistles.
The ISP support desk has done their best, but has no Apple OSX expertise.
    Ideas anyone?

    Rick,
I’ve answered the questions you’ve asked, starting below. I am using a router for LAN with 2 IBooks and a Windows XP machine. For further info, I have also included all of the settings recommended by the ISP and additional test results when directly connected to the modem from my Ibook. (Hope I haven’t gone from not giving you enough information to giving too much…)
    1) ISP: www.bordernet.com.au. The system is a two-way satellite link through what I think is an Optus satellite. Max speeds 64 kbps uplink and 256 kbps download. I seem to be getting consistent upload speeds of 48-52 kbps (with or without the router in use), but the download show at about 240+ kbps with the direct connection 150 kbps through the router – and sometimes things hang up altogether.
Setting a static IP address in the router seems to be slightly more stable as the hang-ups in page loading don’t occur as much, but the speed is still down. (Upload and download tests are done from http://www.ozspeedtest.com) The ISP says is not reliable, but they haven’t been able to give me something more reliable where I can get actual statistics that I can quote – they usually have me attempt to download a file from a local net and read off the download speed as it changes – with the comment back from them, “well that seems OK…) Unfortunately they have no one on the help desk who knows macs, or who can troubleshoot beyond what to them is the obvious.
    2) Ping Test results (via router – see below):
