Software update stalling at "configuring installation"

hey all,
i purchased my wonderful macbook last december and have had no problems with it until recently.
my internet connection at home is such that large software updates are ignored until i can get to an area with decent wifi capabilities. i am at such a place, but the software update (6 items including OS update - could be 7 with iTunes update) stalls out once the update starts to configure the insallation. i closed down all open applications and it has been sitting there for over an hour. what gives? i cannot force quit because the computer has iso'd itself into the update. the only way to get out of this current situation is to force a shutdown.
any ideas?

i would really love to post a pic of paul dooley from strange brew when he is on the stand waffling over the question of explaining what a "timecode" is ...
nonetheless, i did reboot before trying the latest update but ... didn't backup. in the future, i will be a little more thoughtful with regards to updates, but i have not gotten around to thinking about backups yet. still relatively new to the concept of having my own computer.
anyways, checking on my macbook, it's still claiming to be "configuring installation" but the status bar has grown/moved/become larger so, there might be hope.
thanks for replying and i will get back when/if the update is a success/failure.

  • Software updates stuck at "Configuration Installation"...NEED HELP?

I have a new Mac Book and I performed software updates when I first bought it and everything downloaded and installed seemlessly. Just recently when I tried downloading and installing OS 10.5.5, the comp got stuck when it was shutting down and trying to instill the updates. I just downloaded OS 10.5.6 and it has done the same thing. It said that updates have been downloaded, do you want to restart. I click continue, it begins to shut down and start the install of the updates and it stalls and doesn't do anything. I need help!!

Same problem here and we tried the Apple link suggested but it is still not working....
Purchased a new Aluminum Macbook for my son at Xmas and he has not been able to download anything. We have run permissions repair, cleared Library etc multiple time and still get error messages when attempting installation. Poor kid is very frustrated as am I. Any further help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks!

  • Re-Install + Software Update = Stall

As per AppleCare instructions now on my third OSX erase & install of week old MBP.
After installation I have run Software Update as requested. Installation stalls.
I have run Disk Utility off of install disk, Repair Permission & repair disk. There were a few permissions to be repaired "airport".
On restart Airport does not carry password and I have to reenter again and again.
Another user suggested a boot into safe mode but not a log-in just restart. I have done all this but after running software update from the apple menu I get mac os x 10.5.3 needed. I hit to download and am asked for password. Enter password and hit enter. Immediately, a new window pops up saying "The new software requires that you restart your computer".
There is no downloading... I hit OK & the MBP restarts. I get the Leo background and the software update window appears with installing 1 item with the bar and under that configuring installation. It hasnt moved in half an hour.
Is another Erase & Install needed???
If I do another E & I do I have to do the stupid verify disk check?
Hoping I dont need to to another E & I but this is just stupid!!!
    thanks for any suggestions.

There may be others here who can help you with software update problems better than I but I've found that I have better luck just going to the apple downloads page and downloading the disk image file for Mac OSX upgrades. Everything else, such as security updates, quicktime, itunes, and other updates I do use software update for. But I had some problems doing OS upgrades via software update before so now I just get the upgrade for those from the downloads page then use software update for everything else. And yes, if you're downloading something, such as OS, quicktime that changes something in the system SU will tell you you'll have to restart after it downloads and installs. You can get the combo update that will take you from 10.5 to 10.5.3 at http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1053comboupdate .html No, you shouldn't have to do erase/install to do this update
Hope that helps and that others who have more knowledge about your erase/install problems also pitch in.

MagicMenu Enabler is a product developed by the
people who make Stuffit. From the above log it
appears that it might be compromising your system,
and possibly contributing to the problem you are
    seeing.
Go to your Main Library>InputManagers folder and
remove the MagicMenuEnabler plug-in (for the time
being move it to your desktop).
    Then restart Safari.
    Post back
Thanks, Joseph. Tried it last night on my laptop and it didn't help. I still have lots of similar error messages not related to Stuffit. I am getting frustrated. Sometimes Safari is OK, but I have great difficulty logging in to secure sites like my bank and brokerage accounts. Software Update still stalls. Sometimes I have difficulty logging into this site. But, some websites load OK. I can access all of them on my Windows computer in my office.

  • HT6150 Software update 10.9.2 installations last minute has taken now for 45 minutes

Software update 10.9.2 installations last minute has taken now for 45 minutes.
    Anybody having  same trouble?

I just had this happen to me too – hung on "Completing Installation" for over an hour on the 10.9.2 update. Got confidence from this thread to restart (and things also seem fine for me), but I've had bad experiences doing that with similar system updates, so it certainly makes me more wary of applying Mac OS updates than I should need to be. I definitely expect more of Apple.

  • All software updates installs stall on 'configuring installation'

    Hello,
I've noticed that I've been forced to manually download and install the past three updates for my computer. The 2008-007 security, RAW 2.3, and now the Safari 3.2 update. I've noticed several others with the same problems regarding the individual updates.
Is this a part of a larger problem? Is there a fix other than the manual install that I've missed?
Any help would be great. Thanks.

The same thing keeps happening to me. I will try to do what you did to install manually.
I tried three time to install and it stalled at configuring system. I closed my computer and came back an hour later and found that the computer was almost frying itself, the fan was running at 100% AND THE OUTSIDE OF THE COMPUTER WAS TO HOT TO EVEN TOUCH!!!!!
I grabbed a sock and opened it and shut it down, when I restarted it the fan started running at high again, and then about 5 minutes later it calmed down. What is the deal?
    Thank for the tip.

  • 10.5.3 Update stuck at "Configuring Installation..."

I downloaded the update and then restarted my iMac only to find the installation progress bar to be stuck at a certain point. After 10 hours of leaving it at that, I forced shut down my iMac. Any ideas as to why the update won't work? Maybe I messed up with the OS files... but I doubt it.
    -I recently re-installed Leopard... if that's a problem.

Thanks everyone with your tips I was able to overcome this issue.
For those of you who may be found in the same predicament, you can resolve this by going into the HD > Library > Updates and move all the files and folders to your desktop. In each of the folders there is a folder called Packages, launch the file with the .pkg suffix. This is the actual installer. Do this until you find the culprit installer that is causing problems (you'll recognize it because it will get stuck at 'Configuring Installation'). After you have successfully applied all the good updates. Throw everything away (including the plist file) and restart. Launch Software Update and it should redownload the package that was damaged and all other updates.
    Hope this helps.

  • Software Update Stalls

When I try to run Software Update under my Administrator account, the program begins to run but then just stalls. The progress bar moves a bit at first and then stays in the same place. I have even left it to run overnight without any success. Previously, it had worked just fine. If I run it under my user account, it does seem to work ok. What can I do to fix this?

    I would do this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Software Update Stall

Has anyone else noticed this. On several macs, PM G5, iMac G5, older iMac and a PM G4 I've noticed that when updating software via Software Update, the download often stalls part way through. This seems to happen on a regular basis. The G5s are running Tiger 10.4.6 while the G4 and old iMac are running Panther 10.3.9.
I often have to relaunch Software Update several times to complete the download. When downloading via a browser, this never happens. Is there a known issue with Software Update?

There may be others here who can help you with software update problems better than I but I've found that I have better luck just going to the apple downloads page and downloading the disk image file for Mac OSX upgrades. • Update hangs on 'Configuring Installation'

The 10.5.3 updater downloaded through Software Update is hanging at the 'Installing 1 item window at the Configuring Installation stage. What now?

i downloaded the upgrade combo file from apple and installed it instead.
it works. and took less than 10 mins. it did reboot twice on its own.
but now it is installed and verified so from the software update.
however, i am wondering where did the original software update downloaded the file.
cause when i was having problem i know the file was downloaded somewhere as it does not prompt me for download when i retry the upgrade. just wanted to make space on my air.
oh i also tried to repair permission on my air before i ran the combo update. it fixed an error in a log file.

  • Installation stalls at Configuring Installation stage

We finally purchased 10.5 and I've been downloading updates for the past week. We live out in the boonies so we're on dial-up and it took me 5 nights to download the 326ish MB update. So imagine my thrill when the download was complete and I started the install. But the install stalled at the "Configuring Installation" stage for 4 hours. I was no longer thrilled. Then the power went out. I thought I had lost the download so I went to download it again but it started the install over again and then stalled at the same stage for several hours, again.
I have done a few searches through Google and the archives here. Either I'm not searching for the right terms or this isn't an issue that's come up yet. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to get 10.5.5 to install or any insight as to why it would take 4+ hours to configure the installation?
The only thoughts I have is that the download lost something in it's series of interruptions as it was being downloaded (dial-up seems to kick me off after X many hours, apparently) and that this is causing the install glitch, if it's even a glitch at all. The only other thing I can think of is that my now outdated Norton Antivirus is trying to scan the download and causing trouble - but as far as I can tell it's deactivated.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi1 The only main system update you need is the 10.5.5 combo updater which is found HERE. Your problems are most likely what you think, dial up, Norton etc. Your best bet is to get someone to download the update for you that has a high speed connection or get the Apple Store to burn you a copy (if you are near one). It shouldn't have taken 4 hours to install once downloaded and the interruption may have damaged the install you have. You would probably be better off doing an archive and install of the main system and then applying the combo updater. It depends on whether the system seems to operate ok now. If it does I'd retry the updater with all external printers etc. detached. Tom
ps If you can't find anyone to burn the update for you I'll burn you the updates and mail them to you.

  • Software upate sticks at configuring installation....

I've been updating software thru software update. When I update software that needs to restart the update hangs on the configuring installation window. The software seems to update completely before this happens I guess. Anybody know what's going on here.
    Thanks

I have just had the same problem. I upgraded from OS 10.4 to 10.5 using a purchased CD, all of which went fine. I then did Auto Update to update to 10.5.2. Last night it stuck on the configuration window after the bar moved above 4mm. After an hour I did forced re-start and repeated the upgrade (it skips straight to the installation window so the m/c knows the update has been downloaded). I left it overnight and it did not move at all!
This morning I forced a re-start, ran Disk Utility from the installation CD and although no repairs were required, a few permissions needed re-setting. So here I am, running from OS 10.5 but unable to update and searching the forum for an answer. Possible related problems are a caps lock button acting in reverse and a number lock button which needs to be on to allow any typing but I will look elsewhere for answers to those problems!
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

  • Software Update, 10.6.6 installation error!!

Hi all, hope someone can help.
I have a Mac Pro running 10.6.5. I upgraded to 10.6.5 recently and had problems with this. When using Software Update, it would download, log out and install only to get an error at the end saying it couldn't install, with no explanation of why. I did some investigation and it boiled down to Safari (one of the updates in the list to install along with 10.6.5) wasn't being replaced. I had to delete Safari from my applications folder before updating. I tried rebuilding permissions and even installed from the installers from the apple download page. but until I deleted Safari from my apps folder it would fail every time.
Since I assumed that it was a corrupt copy of safari and all other update went ok I assumed I had fixed the problem.
Now I'm trying to install the update of 10.6.6 via Software Update. and I'm getting the same problems. It downloads, reboots, installs then at the end says that it was not installed because of an error and promps me to restart.
I have downloaded the update and run it from the desktop and it goes through the install as follows:-
    Installing
    optimizing system
    Moving files
    installation failed.
It seems that it isn't able to replace existing files on my system with new ones therefore fails the install.
Has anyone got any ideas? I have repaired permissions with disk utility and tried repairing them while booting from the 10.6.3 system disc, still no joy
    Many thanks

Worse problem here. I get the installation error then the computer attempts to reboot and I get locked at the gray background apple screen. Tried safe boot power on +SHIFT a status bar comes up and goes 3/4 away across and locks. Running permissions repair from Mac OEM disk set was no help. Had to do a time machine restore. Seems my install error is catastrophic. On the upside time machine works very well.. A bit disappointed with my Windows-esque crash

  • Software-Update doesn't run Installations anymore

    Hi there,
after I installed Snow Leopard, a few days later a wanted to update to iTunes9 and the new securitiy update. The software updates finds all the updates and the are listed on the screen but when I press install and accept terms and conditions nothing happens anymore. The list with the update to install remains on screen. Even when I want to reinstall Snow Leopard from CD no installation will start. Anybody else with similar troubles? What to do???

A fix I recently saw, posted by V.K., pertains perhaps only to those using custom keyboards. On the other hand, it may be more general. If you are not using a custom keyboard, then the possible fix should not do any harm. Here it is.
Set your keyboard to the standard US layout if not already done. Then, delete this file: /users/username/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.HIToolbox. Next, log out and back in. Then try installing whatever you have been having problems with.
