Software update unexpected error on installation

I was updating with the latest combo updater to 10.4.11 from 10.4.8, and iphoto 6.0.6 and backup 3.1.2 and I get a message that an error occurred and the software couldn't be installed. Quit software update and try from Finder. I did with same results. Used disk utility to repair permissions and no luck.
Even if I just try to install one of the three I get the same results. Have 2.1Gb available disc space.
Any ideas?

Hi.
You say you have 2.1 Gb free, but, what's the size of your hard drive? Less than 15% of free space on your hd is a recipe for disaster in OS X.
If there's less than 15% of free space, then you should transfer or delete files in order to free up space beyond the 15%, and also clear the Software Update cache by moving to the Desktop or trashing these two directories:
/Library/Caches/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate
/Users/youruserfolder/Library/Caches/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate
and launching Software Update again.
Good Luck.

  • "software update"  "An error occurred while checking for updates"

When I click on "Software Update", an error results, "An error occurred while checking for updates".  It is definitely connected to the internet.  I was gifted a G5 and I installed a new hard drive and loaded the OS, OS X 10.3.5.  That version of Safari does not display pages correctly.  E.g., support.apple.com/downloads just clocks on the righthand side of the page.
Because cannot access that link, cannot manually update the OS - I was thinking this version is "old" and as a result, unable to connect to apple's update server.  Thanks.

Thanks,  I upgraded with your info.
Ultimately, I am trying to access mail.google.com but receiving  the following error with opera v9.5.x: Some important features may not work in this version of your browser, so you have been redirected to the Basic HTML version.
Safari gives the following: Some important features may not work in this version of your browser, so you have been redirected to the Basic HTML version.
I can access ask.com and using opera to type this response.

  • The device has encountered an unexpected error. Installation error: application verification failed

the device has encountered an unexpected error. Installation error: application verification failed
I have been receiving this message over and over again when trying to publish my iOS app for the app store (I use Flash cc AIR 3.9.1.1080 for iOS and my settings are: "device testing in interpreter mode", as my app uses several swfs).
I have done everything from scratch, as recommended on other sections of the forums: new app ID from my apple developer account, new Distribution Certificates, new Distribution Provisioning Profiles and nothing works.
I can install my app on my iPad if I use the development Certificate and Provisioning Profile and everything seems OK. But as soon as I use the Distribution Certificate and Provisioning Profile get the same message:
the device has encountered an unexpected error. Installation error: application verification failed
I have done everything from the beggining over and over and nothing works. Am I the only one having this issue on Flash cc???

    Hi Daniel:
I´m far from being an expert on Xcode (or any code) but this is what I did and it worked:
    - On Xcode go to Preferences > Accounts > select your App Developer Account, then click "view details" on the lower right corner.
    - There you can see which of your "Signing Identities" (Certificates) are "Valid". You should have at least one for Development and one for Distribution.
    - Below that window there are two icons which you can use to add, export or revoke a "Signing Identitie" (Certificate).
    - Choose the one you want to use (Develop. or Distrib.), export it to the folder of the app you are working on and name it in such a way you can relate it to your app. Before knowing this I was exporting them using Keychain Access and I wasn´t naming them to differentiate each one properly.
    - On your Apple Developer account create the Provisioning Profile for your app. I deleted any App IDs or Prov. Profs. which were useless.
    - Then on my Apple Developer account I generated a Development Prov. Prof. to install and test my app on my iPad. All went fine.
    - Then an Ad Hoc Prov. Prof. again to install and test my app on my iPad. All went fine.
    - Then I generated the App Store Prov. Prof. and I was able to install the app on my device without the upsetting error.
    - Then I uploaded the app to iTunes Connect with no problem.
These link was useful for me: https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/technotes/tn2318/_index.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/D TS40013777-CH1-TNTAG0
You can also search for "Certificates" and "Provisioning" on Xcode help.
    Good luck!

  • How to troubleshoot Software Update Deployment Errors

    Hi Guys,
Could you guys please help me to troubleshoot 'Software Update Deployment Errors'. I have been trying to troubleshoot the below mentioned errors but I am not sure what step should I take for each different errors.
Could you guys please help me stating what kind of troubleshooting steps should we take for such update deployment errors.
    Many Thanks,

    You would have to examine client-side logs like UpdatesDeployment.log, U*.log in general, ScanAgent.log, WUAHandler.log, WindowsUpdate.log and CI*.log.

Several users are reporting a server problem with Software Update. Why not wait and try again later today or tomorrow to see if the problem is resolved.
If the problem is on your computer then give this a try:
    Fix for Software Update
See Troubleshooting Automatic Software Update in Mac OS X.
    Delete the following files:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
/Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.xxx.plist where "xxx" is a number.
    /Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate/ (delete entire folder)

    Anybody having  same trouble?

I just had this happen to me too – hung on "Completing Installation" for over an hour on the 10.9.2 update. Got confidence from this thread to restart (and things also seem fine for me), but I've had bad experiences doing that with similar system updates, so it certainly makes me more wary of applying Mac OS updates than I should need to be. I definitely expect more of Apple.

  • Software Update, 10.6.6 installation error!!

Hi all, hope someone can help.
I have a Mac Pro running 10.6.5. I upgraded to 10.6.5 recently and had problems with this. When using Software Update, it would download, log out and install only to get an error at the end saying it couldn't install, with no explanation of why. I did some investigation and it boiled down to Safari (one of the updates in the list to install along with 10.6.5) wasn't being replaced. I had to delete Safari from my applications folder before updating. I tried rebuilding permissions and even installed from the installers from the apple download page. but until I deleted Safari from my apps folder it would fail every time.
Since I assumed that it was a corrupt copy of safari and all other update went ok I assumed I had fixed the problem.
Now I'm trying to install the update of 10.6.6 via Software Update. and I'm getting the same problems. It downloads, reboots, installs then at the end says that it was not installed because of an error and promps me to restart.
I have downloaded the update and run it from the desktop and it goes through the install as follows:-
    Installing
    optimizing system
    Moving files
    installation failed.
It seems that it isn't able to replace existing files on my system with new ones therefore fails the install.
Has anyone got any ideas? I have repaired permissions with disk utility and tried repairing them while booting from the 10.6.3 system disc, still no joy
    Many thanks

Worse problem here. I get the installation error then the computer attempts to reboot and I get locked at the gray background apple screen. Tried safe boot power on +SHIFT a status bar comes up and goes 3/4 away across and locks. Running permissions repair from Mac OEM disk set was no help. Had to do a time machine restore. Seems my install error is catastrophic. On the upside time machine works very well.. A bit disappointed with my Windows-esque crash

  • Software Update Issue-After Leopard Installation

I installed Leopard yesterday and ran the first software update; everything worked OK; the first software updated included three updates: Remote Desktop Client update; iDVD update and Garageband update.
Today I tried to run another update and had this issue: while the Software Update is displaying a message saying "New software is available for your computer" there is nothing listed below and the install button is disabled! Then I went to the Software Update Preference and saw a message there saying Last Attempt Failed; error occurred while checking
Does anyone have the same issue while trying a new software update after Leopard installation?
I do understand there is another new update issued yesterday by Apple regarding login key
Grateful for any insight re this problem

Hi. I had the same problem after doing an erase and install of Leopard yesterday. When I go into Terminal (actually iTerm) and type "softwareupdate -l" (to list all updates), I see:
    XML parser error:
    Encountered unexpected EOF
    Old-style plist parser error:
Malformed data byte group at line 1; invalid hex
This appears to be a problem with com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist, the property list for Software Update, but I'm not sure. If I type "find ~/Library/ -name '*plist' -exec plutil {} \;" to check all the plists, however, the Software Update plist checks out as OK. Furthermore, deleting that property list and rebooting to force the OS to create a new plist does not fix the problem. Weird. Now, if I type "sudo softwareupdate -i -a" to install all updates (change "-a" to "-r" to only install recommended updates), it works fine. I still get that same error when I try to run Software Update normally afterwards, but if I go to the preferences, all of the updates are listed under Installed Updates. So, I can get the OS to update automatically, but only through the Terminal. This is very weird, and I hope someone can shed more light on this situation.

  • Software update - networking error (Mac OS 10.4.11)

    Hi everyone,
I've been having problems running software update on my 867 MHz Powerbook G4. Every time I try to run software update, I get the same message: "A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again."
    I'm using Mac OS X 10.4.11.
My network is running fine, and I've run Network Diagnostics several times fully through to confirm this.
I've tried repairing the disk permissions through disk utility a few times, and nothing's changed.
I tried copying three files from my Library / Preferences folder, along with my Caches folder (after reading that this could fix the problem), but still, software update doesn't work.
I tried running the 10.4.11 combo update for PPC, rebooted in safe mode, and repaired my disk permissions again, but still, no luck.
There's another problem that might be related: Safari can't load pages. Firefox 2.0.0.18 works fine, but Safari doesn't do anything. Also, closing the Safari window (Ctrl + W) doesn't work, quitting the program is the only way to make it go away.
Thanks in advance for the help, it's much appreciated!

Hi James, and a warm welcome to the forums!
To expand a bit on Sig's great advice...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
Also, how much free space do you have on your HDD?

  • *FIX* Software Updater install errors *FIX*

If you're getting an error 1720 when trying to install Nokia Software Updater, there is a workaround.
The error is only in Nokia's combined installer, not the NSU installer itself.
    1. Download and install 7-Zip. Don't worry it's free!
(No, neither WinRAR nor WinZip will do for this)
    Get it here: http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
    2. Use 7-Zip to extract the contents of NokiaSoftwareUpdaterSetup_en.exe into a folder. You should now have a bunch of folders and a few files.
    3. Go into Packages, then NokiaSoftwareUpdater, then Setup
    4. Launch NokiaSoftwareUpdater.msi (double-click it).
    5. That's it!
I think the problem must be a script Nokia have used in their combined installer, which in itself is unnecessary as NokiaSoftwareUpdater.msi will start the installers for the other apps and drivers anyway. Those crazy Fins!
Whatever, this worked for me so hopefully it'll work for you too! :-)
    I didn't get where I am today.

    .:UPDATE:.
Unfortunately this workaround doesn't work with the updated NSU (version 01.04.053.34607) that came out on July 31st (2008).
Whatever Nokia have done, it now means that even after extracting the installer from the package, you will still get Error 1720.
Nokia, why are you breaking your software for us?! Please simplify the installations so we can keep our devices' firmware up to date. Otherwise what's the point of your programmers constantly coding updates?
    Sheesh!
    I didn't get where I am today.

  • Failed software update returns error code 0x87D00668

We are using Secunia CSI to create and publish 3rd party software update packages to SCCM 2012.  I have one client computer running Windows 7 Pro x64 that is having a problem with one update.  When the user tries to install the Adobe Reader update
in Software Center it fails and returns the following error.
The software change returned error code 0x87D00668(-2016410008).
I haven't been able to find any information on this error code.  I was just wondering if anyone else has encountered this error and might have any information on it??

The item it's referring to in that error would seem to be the task that can't be found. No?
The issue that needs to be addressed is that the updates aren't needed - they are installed on the server. I've installed the updates manually, rebooted, Software Center should not even be reporting that the updates need to be installed.  And back to
the second post above, "Software update still detected as actionable after being applied" seems to be saying that it DOES see that the patch is installed.  The question is then, why is it still "actionable"?
    Thanks
Why do you think that they are not needed? Have you force CM to scan again for SU? Are they show as being applied in CM12? What does the Windowsupdate.log say about that SU?
I don't think it is a task that can't be found based on that single line from the log file.
Garth Jones | My blogs: Enhansoft and
    Old Blog site | Twitter:
    @GarthMJ
I don't think the updates are needed because they are installed on the server. You will see in my above posts my reasoning for concluding that the updates are installed: "I have two security updates that are indeed installed (according to Windows Update,
the Windows Update log, and Add/remove programs), yet Software Center shows "failed" and with that exact same error of "Software update still detected as actionable after being applied".
Yes, I've forced multiple rescans (before and after reinstalling the client) over the course of a few days. Software Center still shows failed.
The Windows update log shows that it installed successfully. Here's one of lines in the log for one of the updates (in fact as far as the log goes back, 7-3, it's been saying this):
WindowsUpdate    Success    Content Install    Installation Successful: Windows successfully installed the following update: Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows
    XP x86 (KB2729450)
I think, again, we're back to the fact that is is installed but the issue is: "Software update still detected as actionable after being applied" seems to be saying that it DOES see that the patch is installed.  The question is why is it still
"actionable"?  The client sees that it's installed but ... why is it saying it's still "actionable"?
I realize that this issue might be a little tougher to track down since I couldn't find ANY other reference to it online.
Lastly, Config Manager shows "failed to install update" which is exactly what Software Center reports.
Thanks again, am happy to upload/copy/paste any logs you think would be helpful.
