Software Update v3.1.2 failed.  Unable to restore.

Downloaded and installed v3.1.2 of the iPhone software.
Received message: 'The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error ocurred (1013).'
When I restore the iPhone the same message appears at the end.
I am using the latest version of iTunes - v9.0.1 (9).
Anyone know how I'm able to resolve this?
Thanks.

the official apple help page for restore errors is http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275
my best guess is you need to re-do with DFU install.. the best DFU help page i've seen is Here
you can go through the whole checklist at TS1275 but i would first try to DFU and restore.
DFU = device firmware upgrade (update?) it's a more low-level system than the normal restore.
if you want to improve your chances, than make a new user account on your computer and restore from there. (then switch back to YOU and restore your data there).

  • 3GS 3.0 to 3.1.2 update failed, unable to restore

Recently I attempted to update the firmware of my 3GS from 3.0 to 3.1.2 in iTunes 8.2, and it failed with an unknown error. It now continually enters recovery mode whenever I power the device on. Attempting to restore the device (which only lets me restore to 3.1.2 now despite the fact the update didn't complete) results in iTunes hanging on "Preparing iPhone for restore" which then ultimately fails with a numeric error, usually 1604.
I've googled all night trying to find possible solutions to this problem. I've read the official Apple help docs on what to do for the various numeric error codes I've received.. I've rebooted, I've ensured I'm connected directly to my PC (Windows XP SP3 32-bit) using a USB 2.0 port and not a hub, I've tried on my Macbook as well using both iTunes 8.2 and upgrading to 9.0.1, I've tried booting into DFU mode (in this mode, it hangs and then fails on an earlier step, something like "authorizing restore with apple", I forget the exact wording).
I've deleted and redownloaded the firmware IPSW files, I've tried shift-clicking restore and restoring from a 3.0 firmware (not allowed, apparently). I tried restoring from within Xcode instead of iTunes which hung for a while on "Connected to device" before aborting with an error about being unable to begin DFU mode.
This is a completely legit, off-the-shelf, never-jailbroken never-unlocked iPhone 3GS purchased from Softbank in Tokyo (where I am still using it). Is there anything else I can try to get this thing working again? I'm in the middle of developing an update to an App Store app and here I just wanted to try updating to figure out a crashing problem the QA testers were having and now I've got a dead brick.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
The most recent version of iTunes is 9.0.2
Try updating your iTunes software and *then try to Restore the iPhone.*
On your Mac, click the Apple Menu  / Software Updates.
After the installation, repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and *restart your Mac*.
Make sure your Windows based machine has the latest version of iTunes also. 9.0.2
Launch iTunes on the PC. If it's not up to date you should see a dialog box asking if you want to updage your iTunes software.

  • Manual Software update on OS IMage fails

I'm running SCCM 2012 R2 and have several Windows 7 OS images created. I'm trying to install the OS updates, but I keep getting the error, "Failed to find or access the update binaries to be applied on the image."
When I looked in the OfficeLineServicingMgr.log file I found this:
Content '00cbc4d9-deec-4787-b3ee-f4ebf0d12daf' not found in content library on this site. Software updates should be distributed to this site.
I searched until All Software updates for that content number, but it's now there. Any ideas on how to fix this?

    Hello,
Check if the solution work for you:
    SCCM 2012 SP1 - Offline

  • Software Update Problem and Apps Failing to Launch

Ok, so, I have done a lot of hunting around to resolve this problem, (possibly problems) and tried some of the few fixes I have found, (though all were not exactly describing my problem). Said fixes were mentioned on here and on other sites/forums. Apologies if my post is described and resolved elsewhere. I couldn't find it.
    Firstly, my spec:
    27" iMac
    Lions OSX (10.7)
    3.1 Ghz Intel Core i5
16GB 1333 MHz DDR3 (installed by myself after purchase)
(Let me know if you need to know more to understand my computer further)
This computer is absolutely brand new. All I have done so far is the initial set up and installed Google Chrome and various Adobe software (CS5). Also, I did encounter a Java Runtime error and I appear to have fixed this issue by manually downloading the latest Java software.
I noticed a problem quite early on when apps were failing to launch/crashing. Frustratingly this isn't black and white. All apps, (both Apple software and third party software (mentioned above)) seem to do a random combination of:
+ Failing to launch - icon bounce a few times and then nothing (no error/dialog box)
+ Crashing - Instantly crashing when opened (typical crash dialog box)
+ Closing down - Open for no more than 5 seconds and then completely closing down (no error/dialog box)
+ Opening fine - An application that was doing one of the above three, but now (for what ever reason) working fine
For more clarity (though this isn't a rule), this is what each individual software (currently) does that I have tested:
Mail - Crashing, but now opening fine
Chrome - Crashing, but now opening fine
Facetime, Address Book, iCal - Opening fine
Photoshop - Opening fine, (though I have yet to click around and do anything substantial. Basically it appears to stay open)
    Illustrator - Failing to launch
    Dreamweaver - Crashing
    iTunes, iPhoto - Closing down
But, like I say, this hasn't been consistent, (for example, Chrome has gone through a process of not working, working, not working and now working).
To maybe resolve this I have tried to Software Update. It finds various updates and I download them. Download seems fine, but after clicking restart to install said updates, only a second in and an error dialog box appears stating that the update files may be corrupt. It then just restarts without updating.
First idea (prompted by a pre-existing forum thread), was to delete files found in Library > Caches. After doing this and restarting, nothing appeared to be fixed/resolved.
Second idea (again, prompted by a pre-existing forum thread), was to repair disk permissions in Disk Utility. After doing this and restarting nothing appeared to be fixed/resolved.
    Any ideas?

AppleCare's Express Lane. Do note that if you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

Trying to downloads App store application for the sole pupose of downloading a purchased OS update 10.7. We cannot download the app store until we have a software update but need the software update to download the app store.

There is no Mac App Store app that you can download. The Mac App Store is installed with the update of previous installations of Snow Leopard to version 10.6.8. v1.1.
Does your Mac have OS X Snow Leopard installed? If not, you have to install it before you may go further.

  • "Ipod software update server could not be contacted": Ipod Restore

When I was trying to update software on my 4th generation Ipod Touch, the screen froze with the 'connect to Itunes' image (i.e. the Itunes logo and the USB). The screen has been frozen that way since and consequently, I have tried to restore my Ipod.
I have uninstalled and installed the latest update of Itunes; updated Windows; re-started my computer numerous times and tried holding the power off/home buttons down together. When Itunes loads, I always get the option of restoring my Ipod however once it has finished extracting software, it says "it cannot be restored at this time because the Ipod software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable".
Therefore, I was wondering if anyone can provide any help in terms of what to do as I am really stuck :/
    Thank you!

    Update Server
    Try:
    - Powering off and then back on your router.
    - iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
    - Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
    Public DNS — Google Developers
    OpenDNS IP Addresses
    - For one user uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes resolved the problem
    - Try on another computer/network
    - Wait if it is an Apple problem

  • Downloaded iPhone 2.0 software update to 2.1 now stuck in restore mode

After syncing iTouch tonight if offered an software update from the 2.0 firmware to 2.1. After paying the $9.95 for the udpate the iTouch is now stuck in recovery mode. When you plug iTouch into computer w/the USB is stays it needs to be restored/recovered. After the 20 minute download. Still nothing. Screen shows a cd and asks for the USB cable. Tried to unplug and while holding home button in plugging back in and same thing. Their software update...nothing found in troubleshooting.

OK, so the restore completes without error but then you get the same thing afterwards?
    Let's try the new user:
    1. Go to Control Panel > User Accounts
    2. Click on "Create new user"
    3. Follow the prompts to create a new computer administrator
    4. Restart the PC and log in to the new account
Once you're in the new account, open up iTunes and try to restore the iPod. Note that it will download another copy of the iPod software.

  • Failed iPhone software update to 2.0, failed restore with error 1604

I downloaded the latest iTunes 7.7 and upon "Check for Update", I was notified that iPhone firmware 2.0 for the 2G iPhone was out. I downloaded the firmware, synced/backed up settings, and then rebooted. Then something went wrong...
I restarted iTunes and the iPhone, per Apple support suggestion, and iTunes found the iPhone connected, but displayed "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes." I clicked OK, and then Restore. The restoration process began with an option to either cancel or "Restore and Update". Cancel is a worthless option, so I did "Restore and Update". Here it begins extracting the software and then prepares the iPhone for restore. The iPhone flickered, disconnected and reconnected to the computer, and then presumably continued the process until ending with the following error: "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1604)." Nothing else happens.
I've tried everything, and am really at my wits end. I have installed/reinstalled iTunes several times. I have tried reinstalling drivers. I've tried rebooting the computer several times. I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting everything. I've been restoring this iPhone for a good 3 hours and nothing seems to work!
I am supposed to give this iPhone to my mother for her birthday tomorrow and now it won't even turn on. A brick makes a great birthday gift afterall...
    Any ideas?

People who have still not solved error 1604 and had a bricked iPhone no matter what they tried, might manage to revive it by following these instructions (on how to downgrade from 2.0 to 1.1.4).
    You will need the following:
    - iTunes 7.5 (NOT 7.7)
    - iPhone firmware iPhone1,11.1.4_4A102Restore.ipsw
    Step 1:
Uninstall iTunes 7.7 completely if you have it and restart your computer.
    Step 2:
    Install iTunes 7.5
    Step 3:
Your iPhone should be in 2 states, either stuck on the "Slide to make emergency calls" screen, or you tried to restore before and it's stuck on the new look "connect to iTunes" screen. Either way you're ok.
Enter the phone in DFU mode (You must have the iPhone connected to the computer and iTunes running). To do this, hold the power & the home button down for about 9 seconds.
Why 9s? Well people say 10s, but it depends how slow you are at counting. Too short and it doesn't work, too long and the apple logo appears.
When you hit about 6-7s the screen should turn off, leave it for 2 more seconds and release the power button, STILL holding the home button. If all went well, you should NOT see an apple logo, the screen should be dead.
Keep holding home until windows/Mac informs you that it's found new hardware, OR iTunes tells you that your iPhone is in recovery mode. Remember, screen should be blank.
If you see an apple logo, repeat the process for less time until you get it right. Took me a little time.
    Step 4:
Shift/Option click the restore button in iTunes and select the iPhone1,1_1.1.4 firmware you downloaded.
Fingers crossed it should restore back to 1.1.4.

  • Software update via desktop manager failed, phone will not boot

I used the Desktop Software (I had to update this first to version 6.00.43; anyway, that's what the Rim.Desktop.exe file properties in Windows Explorer says it is) to update my Curve 8900 's software. It went through the first two steps of downloading and installing; then just sat there stuck on the reboot step -- no kind of error message, just stuck, with phone displaying the AT&T sign on screen for probably a good chunk of lat night (started doing this a little before bed) and all through the day today. Only removing the battery will shut off the phone; once restarted, the white progress bar fills up over a number of minutes and goes back to the AT& screen again; hangup button will not shut the phone down. If I reconnect the USB and the Desktop Software is still running, status message continues to say "disconnected"; if I first connect the USB and then start the software, get a "connecting..." status message but it never connects. Windows 7 "Safely Remove Hardware" list does not display it.
    Any way to fix this?
    Bard55

    Close Desktop Manager.
    Then do this:
    http://www.blackberryfaq.com/index.php/How_do_I_wipe_the_BlackBerry_using_Jl_Cmder%3F
Then follow the instructions exactly in the first post of this thread to install the OS listed there.:
    http://www.blackberryforums.com/general-8900-series-discussion-javelin/227412-os-8900-v5-0-0-1168-5-...
Once you have that done, then you can use Desktop manager to restore the backup file that the original update should have made.
