Software update won't turn off

My software update keeps "bouncing on" in my dock, even when I tell it I don't want the updates or turn it off. I've unclicked the "check for updates" in system preferences, but it just resets itself to "check for update weekly" within a minute or two and tells me it has updates available almost immediately. Any advice?

I just got back from the Genius Bar (W14th store in Manhattan).
FYI - I originally came across this problem using Activity Monitor and noticing that there was a SoftwareUpdateCheck process constantly showing up like a friggin' ghost, which seemed to coincide with my System Preferences switching back on the Check for Updates option.
The Genius Bar guys couldn't trace what the problem was; they did a bunch of commands in Terminal, dumped a bunch of different plist files - and still no help. When I mentioned the whole Admin versus Standard user theory - nothing specific about an Admin user came to mind for them. So we decided to create a new Administrator user account which AT FIRST resulted in the same problem...
*BUT THEN* in System Preferences once we unchecked the "Download important updates automatically" option under "Check for Updates:" (which was set to Weekly by default) the SoftwareUpdateCheck process FINALLY disappeared out of the Activity Monitor and never came back on. And Check for Updates in the Software Update Preferences stayed whichever way I set it (off, daily, weekly or monthly). It seems the key was "Download important updates automatically", which is weird because in the bad user account it stays unchecked there even while Check for Updates mysteriously re-checks itself.
So the Genius Bar guy and myself think there's something installed on my original Admin user account that is forcing an update check in the background. I've disabled the automatic Adobe Updater - but that didn't help - so one by one I'll go through all my other software until I find the guilty bugger. Until then I'm going to use my new user account and quarantine my original user account - accept for doing iTunes stuff - since I'm not ready to face the trouble of migrating all my iTunes Library data to the new user account.
P.S., thanks Marcus at the W14 Store Genius Bar for your patience and enthusiasm. I'm impressed how well you GB folks switch gears from tricky in-depth Mac problems to "my iPhone screen gets stuck sometimes, I can't explain it, so gimme a new one."

  • Software Update Won't Shut Off

I'm running 10.5.6 and I'm having a problem with Software Update. (The problem occurred in past versions of 10.5 as well). I don't want the system to automatically check for updates. I would rather do it my self whenever I feel is the right time. I go into system preferences and the software update section and I uncheck the option that says "Check for updates" but no matter what it still automatically checks for updates. Any thoughts from anyone?

~/Library/Preferences trash the com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist file and restart your computer. Another plist will be recreated when you use Software Update again.

  • Software Update will not turn off

After upgrading to Leopard, software update persists and asks to update every 10 minutes. Unchecking 'Check Automatically' does not help (box becomes rechecked). This is a PowerBook G4 17". Is there a preference file that can be flushed somewhere?

i am having the same problem (software update version 3.0.1, MacBook version 2.1, OSX.5.2). and lately there is not even a software update available. I have never had this problem before, and it just started doing this about 3 weeks ago.
I have tried the solutions that have already been posted with no luck either.

  • I tried to update the software for my iPhone 4S. It froze, and now won't turn off, or on, or sync.  Any ideas on how to fix this?

I tried to update the software for my iPhone 4S, 16 GB to the most recent version (8.1?).  I don't know what I was updating from, because I can't access that, but it was whatever was installed on it (I got it about a year ago, so probably 6.something).
It froze, and now won't turn off, or on, or sync with my macbook plus, which is what I have always sync'd it to.  (I backed it up and sync'd it right before I tried to update the software.)
Since it originally froze almost 3 hours ago, it shows a white screen with the apple on it and a line underneath.  When I try to sync with my laptop, it says it needs me to enter a passcode on the phone, which I can't enter because the screen is frozen.  So I'm unable to access the iPhone portion of iTunes.
I have tried to turn it off, with no luck.  I have tried rebooting my laptop and syncing, but I still get the same result.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
I really wanted to wait to update the software, but I was having internet connectivity issues for the past 3 weeks, and Sprint suggested updating the phone's software.
Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi NWL1,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, the iPhone won't update and is stuck. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.

  • Hi I just upgraded software through iTunes then unplugged iPhone now it is stuck on the connect to intunes screen, it won't turn off and iTunes and my computer won't recognize my phone? Please help

Hi I just upgraded software through iTunes then unplugged iPhone now it is stuck on the connect to intunes screen, it won't turn off and iTunes and my computer won't recognize my phone? Please help

My phone is doing the same thing. My computer acknowledges that I have connected my iPhone 4, however, iTunes will no longer connect or sync to my iPhone 4. I have uninstalled iTunes, Bonjour and all Apple products from my pc. I have re-installed them back on. I have reset my phone. I have emptied my temp folder. I have done everything. If my iPhone cannot update and sync with iTunes then I may as well get another phone from somewhere else. I am disappointed that I cannot resolve this issue.
Rebeccaspe31, were you able to resolve your issue? If so how?

  • Updated to iOS 7.1 and my location arrow won't turn off. It used to. Any ideas?

Updated to iOS 7.1 and my location arrow won't turn off. It used to. Any ideas? Help would be appreciated!

Check in Settings > Privacy > Location Services to see which apps are using Location Services. Turn off those you don't want or need.
Also be sure to close apps you are not using by double=tapping the Home button and swiping apps up.

Have you tried a soft-reset : Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider if it appears), after which the Apple logo should reappear and it will hopefully reboot.

  • When updating to the new iOS my ipod died and now I have nothing but a white screen that won't turn off and itunes now doesn't recognize it

When I was updating my ipod touch to the new iOS last night it died and now I have nothing but a white screen. iTunes no longer recongnizes the device and it won't turn off when I hold the power button or when I hold the power and home screen button.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

My Ipad2 won't turn off.  I have tried the reset method by holding both buttons down for at least 10 seconds, but this doesn't work.  I can't get onto the internet via wi-fi either (don't have a 3G card fitted).  All other functions seem to be working OK including charging. Not had this problem before, but I recently upgraded software to 5.1.1 so is there a bug in there somewhere?

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

  • White iPhone 4 camera flas won't turn off

I have the white iPhone 4 and the flash on the camera won't turn off. It comes on randomly and then just turns off. Tried to soft and hard reset as well as restore. I thought it was an app but still no avail.

Have you tried resetting the phone?
-hold the sleep/wake button and home button simultaneously until the display goes black and the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't work, try updating the phone. If the issue is malfunctioning software this may fix it.

  • Ipad won't turn off when closing new Brookstone leather cover after downloading os 7?

My ipad 3 won't turn off when the cover of the new Brookstone leather case is closed after downloading OS 7. Is there a setting I have not actuated?

A lot of forums I've read said to put it into dfu mode or "connect to iTunes" to restore b
You want it in recovery mode, not DFU, which is used for hacking or on already hacked phones
What is Difference Between Recovery Mode and DFU Mode
Error 21 usually means there is hardware damage,

Try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good. Also, confirm your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers. If you still see the error message when you update or restore, contact Apple support.

  • IPad won't turn off, returns to Connect to iTunes screen

My iPad constantly shows the Connect to iTunes screen. Okay, something's wrong, although I have no idea why . But I won't be near my computer for a few days. I'd like to turn off the iPad until I can, as it asks, Connect to iTunes. But the iPad2 with recently updated software won't turn off.
If I hold just the power button for 6 seconds, the screen goes black. Good, I think, it's turned off. Then 4 seconds later the Apple logo appears and then the iPad shows Connect to iTunes.
If I hold both the power and Home buttons for 10 seconds, the screen goes black and then immediately the Apple logo appears and returns to Connect to iTunes.
How can I get the iPad to turn off and stop burning that image into the screen? Do I just wait for the battery to die?

Got the same problem with my Ipad2.  Went do to the update late last night and it seems like the update quit half-way through the install.
Now all i get is the screen telling me to plug in the USB cable and connect to itunes.

  • K7N2 Delta ILSR won't turn off, just restarts

K7N2 Delta ILSR won't turn off, just restarts.  Every time I click on "Turn off computer" in Windows XP, it shuts down, but restarts again. Could this be OS related, or perhaps Bios related. My other machine, almost identical to this one, except that the other machine has BIOS rev 7.6 and this one 7.2.

PSUs seem to be yr favorite subject, but I'm afraid this time it's software. I experimented some more as the problem only occured after installing the Nvidia drivers. Comparing the system settings in the device manager before installing drivers and after installing them, reveils that the problem shows up when AGP HOST TO PCI BRIDGE is installed. When killing this item the PC shuts off properly. Unfortunately when turning back on, Windows automatically reinstalls the PCI bridge and I have the problem again. LOOKS LIKE A MSI SOFTWARE PROBLEM !
By the way I have a PCI graphics board and not AGP in the failing PC (the good one has AGP graphics).
    Now what?

  • My ipod touch is disabled and won't turn off, itunes doesn't recognize the device and i can't see the serial number on the back

My NOSY (now ex) husband did something to my ipod touch and it is now disabled. It was dead and I charged it and NOW the sucker won't turn off. When I connect to itunes i see a message that says i have to UNLOCK it with a passcode. I tried to get apple support but they want my serial number. Well...the ipod wont turn on!!! I've had it at least 6 years and have moved and I can't find my paperwork and WHO can read that serial number on the back? I know its kind of outdated (third generation, I believe)but its mine, I love it and it has ALL my music on it.

    Disabled
Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    For how to restore:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    To restore from backup see:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.
