Software Updated to 10.4.6, no just a black RESTART screen at Start up

Big trouble with the upgrade to 10.4.6. Went through software update and it appeared to be goig fine until the error that the pkg had to be reinstalled because of an error. Then clicked off that and computer hung. Waited 20 minutes with no results (and could not do anything) so tried to relaunch the Finder to get unstuck. Then nothing worked, Held power button to restart, and siince then, cannot get past the black screen at start up.
Have restarted ok from the tiger disc and did a first aid disk repair with one fix to the hard drive, but then no change in the results. Looked at start up disks from the drop downs and saw that the HD says 10.4.6.
What options do I have? I have an ext HDD, but cannot boot off it. I could erase and reload everything, but I really want to get some files off the eMac's HD.
I have no other Mac w/firewire.
Thanks

Hi thetomkat4,
if you can follow Gullivers advice redarding booting in save mode and after repairing the permissions on your startup disk,
I'ld recommend you to install Tiger on your ext HDD, too. Or an a partition on your startup disk, in case you've made partitions.
My system is running in this manner, with the external always one system version "behind", so I can be sure that it will work. And if my normal startup disk will not work I can start my iMac from the external disk, pressing "option" on startup.
For updating your system always walk through a recommended and long tested method, which you can read here: http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060403142321217
under the headline: Update process recommendation
Updating this way I never had troubles during update since Mac OS X 10.2.5 (where I began to work with OS X).
If you don't own the "killer-app" for system-troubles, DiskWarrior from Alsoft, think about to buy it. It's worth the price and if you do a search here on "discussions" you will only hear positive comments about this masterpiece of software. Running it before and after an update (it's on a bootable cd-rom) will eleminate all possible bugs in your system. I highly recommend it.
I hope that helps
Andreas

As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:
Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 onwards:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
Some general advice on updating Leopard:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious! In fact a second restart can be recommended.
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a week or two while you regularly check their websites for updates.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)

Hello junk51374, for your 28.0 use the next code in a user.js file in your profile :
// turn off application updates:
user_pref("app.update.enabled", false);
http://kb.mozillazine.org/User.js_file
(probably you have it that way in about:config but the important is the user.js file, firefox first read from user.js file)

• 10.5.3 update and the black- restart screen results

Yesterday i loaded the new update and on restart got the black screen on my new 24 inch Imac. Called it a day. Today I did a restore from my time machine g-drive and am back to running without the new update but with all files intact. The restore works great.
I do run vmware fusion on this machine and am wondering if I should delete the enhanced app. bundle in library before trying again or am I just barking up the wrong tree?

I have finally got the upgrade loaded but not without a few problems. I did work all the suggestions and still was stuck with the kernal panic. This time it took a while to develope and was not immediate as it was the first time i loaded 10.5.3. I was able to restart and open disk utility and run permission repair. So far the system is working fine. My guess is that Apple has a problem between the update software and some configuration on the imac. Next I will try my laptop. hmmmmm. Thanks for the help it gave me just enough so i could get on the road again.

• Black restart screen? Did my computer just crash?

I was working with my computer last night when my computer displayed a translucent black screen, and infromed me that I needed to restart the computer. Is this a system crash? I have had occasional software freezes when working with Adobe Photoshop Elements 3 but....this is the first time I have ever seen this. My Powerbook is less than a year old. Any ideas or does this happen occasionally?
Thanks Ed

You did indeed have a kernel panic, and to answer another question, these are not an occasional part of the joy of computing. If you simply restart and carry on, you may compound problems, so it is a good idea to do some maintenance. Use the install disk to start up and then run First Aid -- running it from the DVD disk means the hard disk is not mounted so repairs are more effective.
It is a good idea to get to the bottom of a KP, so I would suggest looking at the FAQs on Dr Smoke's site before you go too much further.
A fresh install is one way to deal with a problem that has its root in software, but it is somewhat of an extreme step and not usually necessary.

• Air for Android app just a black blank screen on emulator.

Greetings,
I'm starting android app development using air for android and I'm encountering the same problem as in this discussion, http://forums.adobe.com/message/4343423.
Followed all the suggested solutions on the above link and nothing is working for me.
Before I started air for android development, I upgraded my air sdk from 2.6 to 3.2, I overlayed the AIR 3.2 SDK in flash following the instructions on this link http://www.flashdeveloper.co/post/20583114199/air32-in-flash-cs-55.
Published my first air for android test app (a simple test app to test swipe gestures) and installed the .apk on the emulator using the command line. When I launched the app on the emulator, it says Adobe AIR runtime is required so I installed the AIR runtime on the emulator using this tutorial http://renaun.com/blog/2010/12/finding-the-air-for-android-emulator-runtime/.
When I thought everything will now work as expected then this problem came up. What do you think is the problem here?
I'm using flash pro cs5.5 on windows 7 64-bit.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks,
Randy
