Software updater refuses to load

I've found multiple discussions about software updater problems, but I believe mine is different. Running latest version of NSU (8.1) on XP SP3 w Trend AV/FW software. No matter whether I exit Trend or not, starting NSU only displays the initial boilerplate, then nothing. No error message, no progress. So, I'm hoping someone recognizes this and has a nifty solution to offer.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
I suggest this thread:

It starts with a process for cleanly starting over, and there is some discussion, and there is also a post (15) with links to older Desktop Software versions, if those are needed. Note that this is not, by any means, guaranteed to work...but it has worked for many to resolve issues they are having.
Good luck!

I am running snow leopard 10.6.1 on my mac, why doesn't running "software update" offer to load 10.6.8?

Please take a screenshot of the following:
Go to the Apple menu which appears in the upper left of the screen, then click About this Mac. Screenshot the window that pops up.
Also under the Apple menu, run Software Update. After it checks for updates, screenshot the window of available updates.

I AM TRYING TO UPDATE MY IPHONE4 AND WHEN I GO INTO THE SOFTWARE UPDATE IT WONT LOAD ANYTHING. IT JUST SAYS CHECKING FOR UPDATE

The update servers are still under pretty heavy load, so it's possible it's nothing on your end. Are you trying to do it over the air or through iTunes?

  • Mac Updates refusing to load

When I go into software update, it shows 3 updates for my Imac running Leopard. Mac OS I Tunes plus another. I can down load them all ok, I can download them all on there own, but no matter which way I try, they will not install. I am left with a fire storm screen and the installation bar shows about 1 cm worth of install. Can any one help me please

You can download the updates manually from apple.com/downloads and there you can find the Mac OS 10.5.2 update, the itunes update, and the other update you have.

  • Software updates will not load

Since downloading 10.4.9, I can no longer access Software updates. If I go to System Preferences and click Software Updates, I get the window where I can ask it to check. When I click the check button, I get a message saying, "Failed to check for updates. Make sure you can connect to the Internet then try again."
Has 10.4.9 taken my trusty machine beyond its capabilities?

    Hi Barry,
Thanks for your suggestions. I tried them both and am still having the same problem. Do you have any other ideas? I tried to search for firmware update information but the support site looped my back to an article about using Software Updates, which of course, I can't. I have faithfully (to a fault, maybe) downloaded all the suggested updates along the way.
I'm used to dealing with behind-the-scenes Windows XP issues at work but my Mac at home has been so reliable that I've forgotten about things like repairing permissions...

i tried to install the new itunes but when i do it says it cant remove apple software update. so then i try to uninstall apple software update by using the remove thing in the control panel but it dont uninstall cause it cant find some file and says to pick a path to the file but the path is right. someone please help ive tried everything i know of

Try downloading and installing the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/
Open it by going to Start > All Programs > Windows Instalelr Clean Up
Select Apple Software Update in its list and click Remove. That should take care of it for you. You can use this for any other apps you are having trouble uninstalling as well.
    Hope this is helpful

If you are trying to install the updated Epson scanner driver when you get this message, it will be due to the installer not being digitally signed - which is odd if it is an updated driver. To get past this block, which is a function of Gatekeeper, hold down the Control button and click the installer. A pop-up window will appear. Select Open from the menu. You will now get the option to install the driver software.

  • Problem with OSX software updates on Slot Loading Mac

Hello to all. Here is my situation. I recently upgraded my Mac (400)from 9.2.2 to OS X.3. After installing the first round of updates all is fine. As soon as I run the second round to 10.3.9 my machine starts acting weird. On start, when you see the grey screen w/ an Apple, the circular progress bar thing seems to hesitate a lot. As soon as the desktop appears. I can barley control my mouse. It is so choppy, it seems to jump all over the screen. I've made sure my firmware was up to date. I tried swapping out my memory and hard drive and still have the problem. Does anyone havve any suggestions??? Thanks guys.

    I originally had a 10GB hard drive. I also tried a 15GB hard drive.
Yes, but how much was free/available? Click once on the hard drive icon, then from the File menu select Get Info. You will see how much free space you have on the hard drive. IME you need 2 GB or more free to make OS X happy.
I read someplace that you had to have memory in pairs...
That it not true for the slot loading iMac.
Usually choppy performance is due to lack of RAM or lack or hard drive space.

  • "System Update" refuses to load; perpetual restart message leads nowhere. R40, Windows XP.

    Folks,
I get the following error message continuously - System Update never starts up, even after clicking "OK"; the only thing that happens is this error message goes away for about ten or fifteen seconds and then comes back. The only way I can get rid of it is to go into Task Manager and kill both of the relevant processes.
    http://files.iclippy.com/109436/1251274772.jpg
I removed and re-installed System Update 3.14 (the latest "driver"), and then removed that and installed an earlier version - no difference. I also repair-installed Microsoft NetFrame 2.0 ( or something like that), since System Update 3.14 apparently needs that - it didn't help .
I hadn't run System Update in - god knows how long, so, wanting to make a fresh back-up after running CCleaner and doing AVG Anti-virus and Ad-Aware scans, I decided it was about time to see what the latest Lenovo updates were first; now this.
Any ideas on how to get System Update to function properly on my machine (R40 2897-54U running Windows XP)?

    Hi,
the firs thing, that I saw is, that you are using a realy old version of TVSU. You are using 3.13.0009.
Go to following link and download the latest version of TVSU: <3.14.0024>
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=TVSU-UPDATE
    And then make following steps:
    - delete the old version of TVSU using Control Panel
    - once it's removed, go to %programfiles%\Lenovo
    - if you see the folder "System update", then delete it manually
    * reboot the machine
    - after it starts back to OS install the downloaded version of TVSU
    - once it's installed, check whether it's working
From your logs it's obvious, that this aplication could not be started in your environment/OS. TVSU could not be started, but unfortunately the reason is not realy shown.
Test the above and let me know about the results

  • The software update will not load

Sofware update window opens. There is a bar which says underneath connecting to server. Apart from green bar going across nathing else happens.

First, make sure you are logged into the App Store with the same AppleID that you used to purchase the apps.
If that is not it, look in the App Store under Purchases. Are they there?
If not, go into your account in App Store and click the link to show hidden purchases.
If they are still not there, use the support link in the App Store.
If they do show up, copy all the apps to an external drive, then remove them from your Mac. Go to the App Store, Purchases, and install from there.

MagicMenu Enabler is a product developed by the
people who make Stuffit. From the above log it
appears that it might be compromising your system,
and possibly contributing to the problem you are
    seeing.
Go to your Main Library>InputManagers folder and
remove the MagicMenuEnabler plug-in (for the time
being move it to your desktop).
    Then restart Safari.

Thanks, Joseph. Tried it last night on my laptop and it didn't help. I still have lots of similar error messages not related to Stuffit. I am getting frustrated. Sometimes Safari is OK, but I have great difficulty logging in to secure sites like my bank and brokerage accounts. Software Update still stalls. Sometimes I have difficulty logging into this site. But, some websites load OK. I can access all of them on my Windows computer in my office.

  • IPod only recognized as digital camera / Apple Software Update unable to be uninstalled

This may sound like a common problem, but I've done a LOT of work trying to fix it based on online searches. With no avail, I think this problem can't be easily fixed.
As the question states, the initial problem is that my iPod Touch (1st gen I think, maybe 2nd gen, iOS 3.1.3) wasn't recognized by iTunes as an iPod, but only as a digital camera (Windows 7, 64-bit). At first I was content because I didn't have extra songs I wanted to add. But then when I cleared the RAM one day, the iPod restarted with the USB/Connect to iTunes screen. Finally, I had no choice but to try to fix the iTunes problem. So, as most people suggest first, I tried to update iTunes.
Unfortunately iTunes was unable to update. There was a rolling back error, that I traced to Apple Mobile Device Software by using the Command Prompt and logging the install log. Apparently, iTunes didn't have sufficient permission by Windows to delete the necessary files. I even uninstalled iTunes to try to reinstall it, but it didn't reinstall, leaving me with no iTunes at all.
Then I extracted AMDS installer from the iTunes installation package and logged that installation process to find errors. According to an online source, the driver was blank, so I first tried using pnputil.exe in cmd to remove the Apple driver package. This failed, so I manually went into C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository to find the driver to delete it so it could reinstall. Unfortunately, it still wouldn't install.
In addition, I changed the ownership of ProgramData, Program Files, and Program Files (x86) in the C:\ disk to Administrator instead of SYSTEM and gave full permission to myself (the administrator) and "TrustedInstaller." A risky move, I know, but I was desperate. I had hoped that this would give permission to iTunes to modify what it needed to modify, but this still didn't work.
Thus, I tried to remove all traces of Apple software that related to iTunes manually. This involved the Apple files in ProgramData, Program Files\Common Files, and Program Files (x86)\Common Files. Then I tried to uninstall the list of programs related to iTunes (Bonjour, QuickTime, etc). However, Apple Software Update refused to uninstall and gave an error "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program reuired for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." I fear in my deletion of files, I might have deleted something necessary for this uninstall.
I downloaded multiple forced uninstallers, but none of them worked - the same message showed up constantly. I went into the registry key to see if I could manually uninstall Apple Software Update, but this didn't seem to work either. I was too afraid to delete anymore files...
So here I am again, having walked in a complete circle in this extremely complicated situation. The files I deleted in my first attempt at a solution ended up hindering a possible actual solution. Any ideas to uninstall Apple Software Update, or to solve iTunes rolling back error, or to remove the connect to iTunes screen from my iPod would be greatly greatly greatly appreciated. I can live without iTunes, but my iPod is very important to me. If anyone has a solution to remove the screen without connected to iTunes, or connecting to a different computer's iTunes, I would be willing to take that course of action too.
    Thanks!

  • Software Update doesn't open a Finder window

I am helping a friend new to the Mac OS learn to use the "download only" option in Software Update. On my Mac, when the download completes, a new Finder window opens and shows the complete path to the update pkg(s). I have my Finder window preference set for column view.
I recommended that my friend use the "download only" option on 4 recent updates.
On her Mac, the downloads arrived, but a Finder window never opened. As a result, she was in a panic because she had no idea where the downloads went.
It has now been verified that they are indeed in /Library/Packages. But she had no way of knowing to look there.
I am trying to win this new user over to the Mac, and told her how Software Update would simply show her where it put the pkg files, but it truly doesn't happen on her machine.
It is the late 2006 Core 2 Duo iMac, 2.0 GHz (Intel), running 10.4.11, with almost all subsequent updates.
She is a "new user" in the sense that a) she is 78 years old and b) her previous PC ran Windows 95. She has had a very rough 2 years to date with Tiger - I receive a "HELP!" e-mail or phone call every 2-3 days. She looks for Mac Help in Mail, looks for Address Book Help in iPhoto, etc.
Excuse the digression. Any ideas why Software Update refuses to show where the downloads are? Any possible fixes? I know this is a small problem, but it's a significant one for my friend.
    Thanks

I'm aware of that approach. I personally think its handy to have the update installers all at hand before I do any updates. If an update goes badly, sometimes it can be a good idea to verify the hard drive, repair permissions, and reapply it, at least that's what I've seen recommended many times for problematic updates.
I'm trying to avoid a philosophical discussion, though, of how to do OS X updates (standalone dmg files vs. Software Update, repairing permissions, or not, safe boot, or not etc. etc.) I've seen long, long discussions. I've never used Software Update to do an update on my machine, but that's only my preference. I could be branded a complete Luddite for this.
I was just hoping that someone out there had a quick fix for the "busted" automatic Finder window - that's all I seek. If not, it's not a serious problem, and I'll move on. Just irritating to see it work 100% perfectly on one Mac and not at all on the other.
    Thank you for your input.
