Software updates driving me NUTS
My software updater is out of control. Sometimes it pops up every five minutes, and going through the whole update-and-restart process doesn't seem to appease it. I've changed my system preferences to only update weekly and to automatically run important updates, but then the stupid update icon still pops up and when I check back in system preferences, it's set back to "check for updates daily". I'm so annoyed.

You probably aren't getting any replies because no one who has read your thread has a clue. I know I don't. The only thing that occurs to me is to create a new Admin user, don't add anything to it, no fonts, no contextual menu items, no startup items, nothing at all that Apple doesn't automatically create. Log out of your regular account and into the new one. Go to System Prefs and set the "Check for updates" schedule. Work for awhile in that account and see what happens. If it behaves normally then there is something wrong with your regular account, and you may be able to track down the problem there and fix it. If things are incorrect in the test account, then the problem is at the system level and frankly I don't know where to look to fix it. It might be faster and easier to just do an archive and install. Be sure you properly backed-up first.

Francine,
Thanks for the reply.
In the new user, I'm getting:
4/23/08 8:45:45 PM Software Update[8781] Package Authoring Error: installation-check results requires a message
So I think I may have some corrupt file in a cache. Is there a place to clean these out?

Versioning error in Nokia Software Updater (for N9...
I have a Nokia N95 as follows:
Network: T-Mobile, UK
Product code: 0547686
V11.0.026
17-04-07
RM-159
Nokia N95 (43.01)
The Nokia web site says 12.0.013 is the latest available firmware for product code 0547686. However, Nokia Software Updater says that my current firmware (11.0.26) is the latest available version. Is this inconsistency an error in the Nokia web site or an error in the Nokia Software Updater? If it's an error in the updater, is there any way forward to get the update?
I hope the firmware itself undergoes more rigorous quality checks than this update process. It appears Nokia would benefit from advice/consultancy on consistency techniques, eg why have the availability advisor and the software updater driving from different underlying data?!...i fink nokia might be uploading the firmware give it a day if not den der summat strange going on
If you find my post useful then click on
Kudos!Nokia N96 (v20.050 / RM-247)

Hi could anyone help me out? my iphone 3gs keeps restarting itself every two minutes which i think is some kind of software issue, now there are a number of things i have done starting with putting in a new battery.when i charge the phone it resets itself every two minutes or so and the battery indicator stays at 4% so i decided to restore the phone on itunes (which is the latest edition) and when i connect my phone which i have put into recovery mode using the buttons, i get an error message saying :- the iphone software update server could not be contacted.a duplicate file name was specified. i have tried re-installing i tunes and that doesn't solve the issue and i have trawled through the program files to see if i could spot the duplicate but without success ,has anyone had the same issue and resolved it?
An iPhone 3G cannot be updated beyond iOS 4.2.1...that's the end of the line for your phone.

When do Boot Camp updates come? Mac Pro SATA issue driving me NUTS
I just got a Mac Pro, FINALLY, and after a long wait, I've had to suffer through hours of shoving Windows XP on my Mac Pro with Boot Camp 1.1. After successfully getting it all put on there, the stupid SATA issues are driving me nuts. I tried the slipstreaming fix TWICE, and I have no patience to try it a third.
Basically, I know 1.1 just came out, but do we know when the next update will come that will supposedly fix the SATA issues? How often do updates come for this so we can have a basic window of when the update will come?but to expect Apple to support Windows SATA driver issue IMHO is not a fair expectation of Apple
I disagree… in this case at least. Apple has stated that Boot Camp is a feature of Mac OSX 10.5 Leopard and to not have it work correctly, or to its potential, on their flagship product, the Mac Pro, as it were intended then this makes it unacceptable. For Apple's customers and for Apple themselves.
Apple IS ultimately responsible for having this work out of the box and with standard off the shelf product, which includes the minimum Windoews product (Microsoft Windows XP SP2 at this time).
Bear in mind that Boot Camp is still in beta so demanding a fix is a little difficult and the the part that I feel is unfair to Apple. While I have stated previously (in another thread) that Apple will fix this issue… they can't not, it appears the reality may be a little more difficult. It is possible that upon the release of Leopard the minimum system requirements on the Mac Pro will be Windows Vista.
What I find a little odd though is that there are no SATA issues on the rest of the Mac product line. -
Software Update and Hard Drive Space Driving me crazy...
Evening,
I have been experiencing this issue for a long time and I don't know what to do. Ever since February 14, 2011 (a SL reinstall) my MacBook Pro for some reason is not recovering the HDD space after Software Update downloads are completed. Before updating Safari and applying the security update my HDD space was 381.79GB, when the update files were downloaded before reinstalling the space went down to 381.72. When the updates were installed and the system rebooted, I expected that the HDD space would have increased but it remained at 372.72GB. I know is not that much of HDD however, I remember that before the HDD space would increase after a software update was applied since SU would delete the installer packages. I have tried 3 full reinstalls with zero out option and unfortunately the problem is still there. Do you think I have a software problem? or hardware problem?
Thank You!Forgot to post: I don't know what is causing the problem, could it be a damaged drive or other hardware or is it a software problem? I have tried the following:
Reinstalled OSX more than 3 times each with Zero Out option activated and the problem keeps resurfacing...
Repaired Permissions
Repaired the drive with OSX Install disc
deleted caches, plist both in finder and SU
Safeboot
Things to still try out:
Reinstall OSX with Zero Out option but with another install disc (I got a replacement from apple care).
and the final one throw my MBP out the window...
Last one is just a joke but I am lost on this issue that has persisted everytime since February 14...

Software Update Server + Caching Service Questions
Hello everyone.
I'm currently trying to finish setting up our Caching service along with SUS and am running into some issues I hope to get some help with. Our environment is configured as the following:
-- OS X Server 3.1.1 with clients running OS X 10.8.5 and 10.9.2.
-- All machines are bound and receiving GP via an AD environment using Centrify.
-- GP pushes out the following two scripts to all machines:
* sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.appstore restrict-store-softwareupdate-only -bool yes --> Setting which disables all aspects of the App Store except for the Updates section
* sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://it0038-mmd.coveroregon.us:8088/catalogs.sucatalog --> Setting which redirects all of our machines to point to our SUS within our AD environment.
The problem I'm having is that I believe the Caching Service is working properly (at least with the 10.9.x clients) but it doesn't look like it is with the 10.8.5 clients; the same with SUS but for all clients. I have two machines with clean images running 10.8.5 and 10.9.0 that I took on 03/05/14; after applying the images and going to Software Update before joining them to my AD environment the following shows as available:
10.8.5. via Software Update --> Java for OS X 2013-005 1.0, Safari 6.1.3
10.8.5 via Caching --> Nothing appears.
10.9.0 via Software Update --> Digital Camera RAW Compatability Update 5.04, iBooks Update 1.0.1, iTunes 11.1.5, Java for OS X 2013-005 1.0, OS X Update Combined 10.9.2, Remote Desktop Client Update 3.7.1
10.9.0 via Caching --> Keynote, Numbers, GarageBand, Pages, iMovie, iPhoto
Once I join them to my AD environment and have the scripts run on the machines the following appears within Software Update on both machines:
10.8.5 Clients --> Nothing appears!
10.9.0 Clients --> Keynote, Numbers, GarageBand, Pages, iMovie, iPhoto
It looks like Caching is working properly but I'm wondering why nothing shows up on my 10.8.5 clients but I'm guessing it's because the Java and Safari updates are with SUS? I'm also guessing the other updates showing up on my 10.9.0 clients are specifically for Mavericks and hence why they're not also appearing on my 10.8.5 clients? Of course the main issue here is that I can't get my machines to see SUS properly.
I'm happy to supply any logs or anything else that would help get this issue resolved. It's really driving me nuts! **** a Starbucks GC or other compensation is in it if someone can help me!
Thanks in advance!MrHoffman,
According to SUS I currently have 769 updates and they are all downloaded. When I check all of the logs I see the following:

My Macbook Pro downloads software updates but it won't install them?
My late 2011 MacbookPro downloads software updates but when I try to install them, it tells me that it's not supported? The software is currently OS X Lion 10.7.5 and I tried upgrading a few things but it won't install. For example, I tried to get the latest update for iMovie, which is crucial for my studies, but it just tells me to update my macbook which is driving me nuts! Help please?
You would need to upgrade to Mavericks to upgrade iMovie to the version now on the App Store.
Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
Are my applications compatible?

HT2305 Software Update for Windows says "New Updates Available" but yet it lists none.
Software Update for Windows says "New Updates Available" but yet it lists none.I have read other threads here on the Apple Support forums, but have yet to find anything that works for my situation. This Issue is driving me nuts. Please Help!
I went into checking with Apple Software Update then I clicked Control Panel - "Repair" It was restored to start menu, thank you much thumb up to b noir Big Helping me! David

Maverick App Store has wrong ID in software update, can't change
I just upgraded to 10.9 today. I went to update software in the App Store and despite logging in with the correct Apple ID via settings, it continues to pop up a new login screen when I go to update, with the email address (wrong) already entered. It's impossible to delete this email address and type in the correct one. I think this is because I am on a networked computer at work, but I have a different Apple ID than the generic IT support email that's being entered instead. Does anyone know how to fix this?
I am not able to update the OS or any software on my computer now because of this login problem!
I did enter my correct Apple ID when installing Mavericks, so the computer should be associated with this Apple ID in the first place, right?I have the exact same problem... I used my Apple ID on this MacBook Air forever, but recently added an account for my wife. Now, somehow, her Apple ID is in my App Store login whenever I try to update. MY ID is in the "sign in" thing and the account thing, but whenever I try to update my apps, it pre-fills her Apple ID into the sign-in dialog and it can't be changed! This is driving me nuts.
I've tried launching the App Store on her account and signing out. I've tried signing out and back in on my accont's App Store. I can't think of what else to try. Everything in App Store indicates that I'm signed in as myself, but when I try to update software (iMovie in this case), it pops up a sign-in dialog with her Apple ID, not mine. -
My keyboard layout changed as a result of the latest software updates
I have a MacBook Air with a US keyboard layout. (I think - I live in NZ)
I agreed to automatically install the latest OS updates. Ever since then the keyboard layout for some characters has changed.
For example Shift-2 used to produce an @ symbol - now it produces a ". I now get the @ symbol when I press the key labelled [.
Please help - this is driving me nuts!
This started today as a result of the latest software update!System Preferences>Language & Text
Reset the region
Also check the Input Sources for proper geography. -
Anyone know how to remove your own picture that is now attached to all text messages? Since the software update (assume KitKat) my LinkedIn photo is now attached to all my text messages and I never set that up, nor can I figure out how to remove it!
How do I remove my photo from my text messages? Android RazrM.
Help! It is driving me crazy. Thank you. Thanks, but this information was not useful. First it was outdated (2012 and the software is 2013/2104) in the Settings/Apps/All section there was no "Text Messaging" icon. Under "Phone/Messaging" the clear cache was not possible, it was not available, an active option.
VERIZON/GOOGLE - I am still hoping to learn how to remove my photo from my text messages - why is this so difficult? Why is something like this added without my permission or at my request? May be a reason to jump ship to iOS. -
Hi there Apple Community!

Then update it to new email address. Creating a new AppleID is usually not a good thing as anything on your old account will not be transferred to your new account.
See this -> Change your Apple ID - Apple Support
and I can't remember my password or security questions, argh.
So reset them...

Restoring it will not delete it.
You need to turn it off (Settings > iCloud - Delete account then re-enable it with updated AppleID.
This is the ONLY way you can do it. -
Mac os 10.4.10 software update problem -- my mac does not work anymore :(
hello!
i have a powerbook G4- PPC. just today, i did a software update of my OS to 10.4.10 (it was the available update version according to the automatic uptae) and during the final stage of the installation, it says "a problem was encountered...installation package is moved to trash"
when i browsed my mac, my apps does not work anymore!!! they just bounce from the dock when i clicked it but it won't open any window. i emptied the trash and restarted my mac but sadly, it just boot but won't continue to the log in part, only in the silver window with the apple logo and mac os x tiger... and the mouse just turns into the color wheel. i waited for 30 mins and nothing happened.
i don't have a startup disc because the mac is a gift and it was long time ago. is ther a software i can use to fix or revert the changes of the unsuccessful OS update? why is there always a problem when i do OS update? isn't apple software stable?
My mac problems' driving me crazy!!!There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them 10.4.10. compliant. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.

Macbook Pro Retina display says "No batteries available" after legitimate system software update
Issue Description
On July 26, 2012 I placed an order with Apple store for the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display with the following configuration (Order # W269108641 Serial# C02J52S9DKQ5):
Processor 2.6GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Memory 16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM, Flash Storage 512GB Flash Storage
It was delivered August 8, 2012. It cost me $3,265.16
I have since equipped it with accessories like a wireless apple keyboard ($69), wireless mouse ($69), USB super drive ($79), VGA display adapter ($29), Ethernet Adapter ($29) and the excellent sleeve/pouch from Pack & Smooch GmbH (GBP60))
It's so heavily configured because it’s my main workstation. I additionally bought and installed Parallels 8 so I can run Windows 8 in a Virtual Machine because I have a few things on Windows that I need to be productive. This setup has been a dream machine until a little over a week ago.
In the one year since I bought it, I have had only 2 issues;
• A case of display flickering that resulted after a system software update on August 28, 2013
(Case ID 498560320 - not much help came from Apple Support but fortunately the problem went away a week later after another system software update)
• A case of battery failure that resulted after a system software update on October 11, 2013
(Case ID 516534003 - I have gone through all recommendations from Apple support as I will detail below)
Symptoms after system software update
• Battery Icon on status bar disabled with a message "No batteries available"
• Battery not charging
• LED on the Magsafe power adapter no longer show
• Keyboard backlights no longer show
• Notebook fan loud/noisy and permanently at high speed
• Date and time reset to a date in the past at each restart
• Notebook starts up the moment the Magsafe adapter is connected without waiting for power button to be pressed
• An update for "MacBook Pro Retina Display SMC Update 1.2" keeps appearing in Software Update
Recommendations from Apple Support
• Perform SMC Reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964)
(Done - no change in status)
• Run Disk Utility
(Done - no errors found)
• Run Apple Hardware test (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509)
(Done - no errors found, no change in status)
• Visit Apple Store
(Done - they confirmed no issue with Magsafe adapter. For a fee they are happy to change the battery if confirmed faulty and re-install the OS if the battery is not the issue but am uncertain that the OS re-install will resolve the issue because I have read online about a similar case where a re-install did not resolve the issue)
• Check System Report/Hardware/Power
(Done - Health Information/Cycle count:0, Battery installed: No)
• Perform NVRAM Reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US)
(Done - no change in status)
Comments and additional Observations
Please note the following;
• All of the symptoms above appeared after a system software update on October 11, 2013
• This update first appeared on October 10, 2013 but I was too busy to apply it especially because it required a system restart
• The battery was fully charged when I decided to apply the update on October 11 morning after I got to work
• Normally on full charge, the battery will typically deliver 3 - 4 hours depending on usage and up to 6 hours when idle
• The said update was not interrupted or anything of the sort
• On the day the symptoms were first observed when I first logged the case with apple, the system ran on battery while it performed the Apple Hardware Test while I was driving to the Apple support store on my way home even though the status bar was indicating "No battery available"
I make the following deductions solely based on my observations
• An apple authorized system software update broke the system
• The nature of the failure is communication related - the battery charging circuit and related systems are not getting the necessary instructions to function as they should (It's a known fact that rechargeable batteries do NOT die instantaneously, the total hours they run on full charge will gradually reduce over time as they degrade on use)
• It’s possible the update is not being applied correctly because the item “MacBook Pro Retina Display SMC Update 1.2” is still in Software update after subsequent attempts to apply it
• The high fan speed is nothing to do with high temperature or high processor load, according to the Activity Monitor utility the highest CPU utilization 1.9 – 4.7% is by kernel_task (PID 0) followed by activitymonitord at 1.8 – 2.2% (PID 481)
• The symptoms match what an SMC reset should resolve according to Apple documentation
• This is a known problem within Apple based on the documentation provided and the numerous similar cases reported online
Summary;
The system is running OS X 10.8.5
I have provided this detailed documentation in the hope that someone who understands this system can say exactly what is going on. It's meant to be a dream machine but now you can hear the fan from across a large room, the battery doesn't charge and is in fact not recognized so I lose data if the Magsafe adapter gets unplugged, and I have to reset the system date each time I restart the notebook.
I've used this notebook with utmost care for a little more than a year, this investment of over $3,500 could have bought 3 high end notebooks from DELL or HP but I chose Apple.
I have suffered untold loss in productivity in the last 10 days since this issue occurred, I respectfully request Apple to fix my notebook.Issue Description
