Software updates fail during installation

After a recent spate of system instability issues, I reinstalled the system software from my Tiger installation DVD. Ran software update which prompted me to download & installl Quicktime 7.1.5 and Security Update 2007-04. Both downloaded fine but failed installation. The in each case the software update log reports "Install failed: The following install step failed: run preflight script for {insert update name here}" I've tried all the troubleshooting techniques I've picked up in nearly twenty years as a Mac Power User and I'm stumped. Any suggestions besides doing a clean install?
Powerbook G4 1.5 gHz (Jan 05)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Thank you, however my back-ups only cover my home folder, not the system and applications folders. I 've performed an archive & install already and that is what I believe put me in this trick to start with. I trashed the old (unstable) system folder after a few days to free space on my internal drive for the software updates I needed to install and now I'm stuck with updates I that won't install.

Since it seemed to help some folks that were having trouble downloading the NIS updates, I have also tried downloading the updates with (winhttp) Proxy authentication on and off.
I have also tried recreating the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder (Stop wuauserv; Rename folder; Start wuauserv; Folder recreated)
Still no luck. Any help or direction you can provide is much appreciated.
    Cheers,

    Hi,
    Thank you for the post.
I did some research regarding error “0x80070005”, you may perform the following steps and see if it helps:
    Step 1: Verify DCOM security
    1. Click Start, click Run, type Dcomcnfg, and then click OK.
    2. Expand Component Services, and then expand Computers.
    3. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
    4. Click the COM Security tab.
    5. Under Access Permissions, click Edit Default.
    6. Verify that the following accounts are listed:
    7. If any one of these accounts is missing in the Access Permission box, follow these steps:
    a.  Click Add, click Advanced, and then click Locations.
    b.  In the Locations box, click the Local_Computer_Name, and then click OK.
    c.  Click Find Now.
    d.  Press CTRL, click the required account names, and then click OK two times.
    e.  In the Group or User names box, click an account that you added, click Local Access in the Permissions for Account_Name box, and then click to select the check box in the Allow column.
    f.  Repeat step 7e for all the accounts that you just added, and then click OK.
Step 2: Verify DCOM default properties
    1. Click the Default Properties tab.
    2. Verify that the following configuration:
    • The Enable Distributed COM on this computer check box is selected.
    • In the Default Authentication level box, Connect is selected.
    • In the Default Impersonation level box, Identify is selected.
    3. Make any required changes, and then click OK.
    4. Restart the computer.

  • Update Failed during installation on machines

    Dear All,
I have deployed updates to the client machine upto deadline reached all machines were in IN PROGRESS and all of them have downloaded the updates so it was fine up to this but when deadline reached and installation started most of the failed to install the
updates and appeared in Error state, further digging in to this i saw there were few updates were failed on many machines.
Q1.Now my query is that why update failed though there are machines in which updates installed successfully.?
Q2. How these failed update will be installed automatically? Do i have to go seat by seat to re trigger the installation.?
Q3. I have made some changes in client settings in Software Update section. Like i have made 2 Hours to check Re Deployment. Is that right to do? To ensure all failure updates are re-installed after recheck.
Find attached snapshot for further reference.

Got this solution from another from
Yes, you can customize how frequently your clients re-evaluate software updates.
In your console, go to Administration, Client Settings
    "Create Custom Device Setting"
Give it a name like "Daily Software Update Re-eval"
check the box on the right for "software updates"
now on the left (because it just appeared), select Software Updates.
Change "Software Deployment Re Evaluation" from every 7 days to every 1 days
(optional: up to you if you want to change the scan schedule from every 7 days to every 1 day as well--totally your choice there).
Click OK once you've made your changes.
Now... you need to deploy that customization.  Right-click deploy it to whatever collection of machines you want to do daily instead of every 7 days.  If that happens to
be "all systems" of course that's up to you.

When I click on Firefox the first time it says "Foxfire is installing your updates and will start in a few moments…. (with a green bar)" then it says "Software Update Failed (in blue) with an exclamation mark inside a yellow triangle)
The update could not be installed. Please make sure there are no other copies of Firefox running on your computer, and then restart Firefox to try again." When I click the ok, Firefox opens up. If I open another Firefox window with the previous one still running, it doesn't give me any of these messages, it just opens normally.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

If you can't install on top of the current installation then you need to delete or rename the current Firefox program folder to do a clean install.
It is possible that your security software is using or locking files, so you can try to temporarily disable that software during the installation.

You are right. There are a lot more self-support tools available in Windows

The upgrade is not the 11.0.06, but that is an update. The upgrade is what
you can purchase if you had a previous version of Acrobat (at least AA 9).
The upgrade is substantially less in price than the full product. With the
upgrade you also have to have the SN of the previous product available for
the install. That is why I asked about the upgrade. Once you install AA XI,
then going to 11.0.06 is a free update (updates are changes in the
sub-version and are done quarterly or when there is a critical security
issue).  You can often fix installations by running a repair. In Windows
that is done either from Help>Repair or from the Control Panel. I do not
know the equivalent of the Control panel in the MAC. In any case I am glad
    you got it fixed.

  • 10.7.5 lion server software update failed - whats the cause?

    Hi all,
I applied the software update for 10.7.5 to my Mac Mini Server, but it looks like it didn't apply correctly.
Server Admin and Server are unable to connect in order to manage system services, Software Update is not able to identify the packages on the machine and therefore gets hungup when it starts.  System services that were working prior to update are now failing (vpnd, webdav).
The system identifies itself as being on 10.7.5, but I believe a number of packages were not upgraded.  For example, the Server and Server Admin tools are showing the same modify times as before the update.  This seems to be confirmed by system.log.
Any ideas how I can get the packages applied?
In system.log, the following entries were added from the time the update was applied:

I've done some more digging and it looks like the three packages included in the update have about 4000 files that didn't get installed.  A good number of them are .png or .icns files, but there are whole applications (e.g. VNCServer) that didn't get updated.
The system is currently in a state where it cannot install software via Software Update or via Installer.
    Any ideas?

  • Z2 software updated failed

Hello. I have a problem with my Xperia Z2. I tried to make the update of my device but my computer shutdowned during that. When I turn on my phone, i have this message "The software updated failed.Make sur that your phone is connected to the computer and try again". The computer doesn't recognize the phone and the phone shut down after this message. What can I do? :/ Thanks

uninstall PCC > Re-download PCC > restart your PC > disable your firewall and antivirus > try again, if that doesn't work then reboot on safe mode then run PCC

The machine is clustered, but the cluster is not online or cannot be accessed from one of its nodes. To continue determine why the cluster is not online and rerun setup instead of rerunning the rule since the rule can no longer detect a cluster environment
    correctly.
I see from the summary log that the installed instances are not clustered, I would suggest the following if the machine is cluster enabled try to see why is the cluster is not online
Second if the machine is not clustered below thread suggest that this ruel is being excuted though the machine is not c;ustered due to media corruption, one advice here is to re-download the patch, decompress it to local folder then run setup from local
    folder

to decompress patch run the following command
    <patch.exe>  /x:"c:\SQLServer2012CU"

  • Software update failed An error occured downloading iOS 8.0

I still trying to update my iPhone5S and iPhone4S but to no avail
What to do after receiving error messages:
    A. via mobile:
    "Software update failed
An error occurred downloading iOS 8.0"
    B. via iTunes...won't even proceed... saying my connection Timed out
"There was a problem downloading the software for the iPhone*** 's
    The network connection was reset.
Make sure your network settings are correct
and your network connection is active, or try again later."
    Note:
    - My connection was working perfectly well during those numerous attempts (probably more than 50 times).
    - iPad was updated after 7 attempts
    Question:
How can I update the  2 iPhone?
    How can I proceed?

Same issue here with iPad Mini. What should I do??

  • Still getting "Software Update Failed" when attempting to download iOS 7 on iPhone 4S.

I've tried countless times now to download iOS 7 on my 4S which is currently running iOS 6.1.3. It downloads completely then in the "Preparing Update..." stage it gives me an error box saying "Software Update Failed. An error occurred downloading iOS 7.0." The same thing happens every time, I've rebooted and reset my pone several times as well as logging in an out of my Apple ID all with no success. It's not like it takes an unusual amount of time downloading or anything, and once it finishes downloading it shows less storage in the "About" section in "Settings" but goes back to where it was once it gives the error message. Just a note, I was able to download iOS 7 on my iPad 3 the day the software was released without a long waiting period or any hassle. I appreciate any input. Thank you.

Thanks for the response. I have 16.5 GB of available space at the moment. I've tried it connected to a wall charger and connected to my wifi, my schools wifi, and my gyms wifi all with no success. I have not tried it from iTunes but after posting this question a few suggestioned discussions came up, one of which recommended backing up to iCloud or iTune and then performing a complete restore. I'm in the process of doing that now, whether it works or doesn't work I will get back to either way. Thanks again.

  • Software Update Failed An error occurred downloading iOS 7.0

I can't seem to update my iPad mini.  Looks like the release of iOS 7 just came out and it's not letting me update.  I keep getting a message "Software Update Failed An error occurred downloading iOS 7.0".
Can anyone from apple tell me why I'm getting this message?  And how to resolve it.
    Thanks for any help.

The entire planet Earth is trying to download the same thing at the same time.
    Give it some time.

  • I've been trying for 2 weeks to update my iPhone 4S (7.0.6) to iOS 7.1 OTA but it fails all the time...telling me software update failed..I need some support pls!!

The problem occurres after the downloading is complete and when its in "Preparing Update" procedure and specfically in its last progress (near the end). Suddenly a message pop ups saying that "Software Update Failed" \n "An error occured downloading iOS 7.1."
I've restarted the update process for the 20 th time!!! and reset my iphone twice to factory settings, but still nothing change, same error occures...

Did it work for you with iTunes?
I have the same problem with my iPad mini. I have done almost all updates of my iOS devices OTA.
    I never update issues before.
Also iPad 2 and iPhone 5 just worked fine.
Only now my iPad mini struggles with the update. Did a factory reset too.
And now have iOS 7.0.2 (11A501) on an iPad Model MD543FD/A.
World prefer OTA instead of iTunes.
    Thank you for any help.

Try updating by using iTunes via a computer.

    Hey there,
As Sneaky_Mouse suggested the best option is atm iTunes. Servers are probably going crayze.
If you cannot do it like that as well you can look for an iOS 7 ipsw (image file) and then, hold down either Option or Shift (on a Mac or Windows PC) and click Update; this will allow you to select the ipsw image.
