Software Updates gone wild!!!

For some strange reason the little Software Update icon that bounces in the dock to let me know I have some stuff to download is going crazy! It keeps bouncing down there ever 10 minutes or so. I have reasons for not updating my computer at the moment because I am in the middle of a video editing project. I even unchecked the box that says Check for updates weekly, monthly, or daily. Before I unchecked it, it was set to weekly. For some reason it has been doing it daily and its annoying. I do want to upgrade at some point just not now. It wants me to update my iTunes, Airport Utility, Quicktime and latest Security update. I am guessing the only way I can make it stop is to download everything.
I am also a little leary too because I have read on here about some people having issues with their computers once they downloaded some of those same things I have yet to download.
I don't want to disable the software update reminder thing but I want it to stop popping up every 10 minutes though.

But you have not read about all the folk who do download and install the updates and never post here because they have no need to do so.
The only reason not to update is when you know your system is not working properly. Fix the system first then update. Falling behind in updates is a sure way to let your computer fall behind in such things as bug fixes, security etc.

  • Software Update Gone Terribly, Terribly Wrong

Two days ago, I started the software update for Safari, Itunes, and other things.
Unfortunately, something went wrong, I don't know if my wireless internet kicked out, or if I was running out somewhere and closed my Macbook. I can't really remember. (And yes, I realize this makes me sound like a complete ditz. But. It's the truth.)
Anyways, what happens now, is the objects bounce a single time in the dock, and do not open. I tried to restart the software update, but I get the spinning wheel of death and nothing happens.
Is there any way to correct this issue without calling tech support or anything?

Saw your reply to vivaldibaby, this worked for me last weekend, otherwise would never post all this. In 20 yrs using Macs, have 12 (1986-2006) all working beautifully, I'd never encountered as instantaneous a problem similar to yours, incl past 4 yrs dozens of incremental SW Upd for Tiger on 6 machines. A long stroll thru these discussions *(thank you all!)* helped me get on the right path (11 hrs mostly online research & download time) to solving a mid-startup freeze seemingly caused by (certainly immediately after) installing latest Security Update 2008-003 PPC. +Here's what I learned, in a more logical order:+ Although neglecting to run Disk Utility & TechTool Pro periodic maintenance before running updates (never good to skip, usually don't) on 20" G4 iMac (not my own) I used my laptop on (slow) WiFi connection at (highly shared) public library to download latest QT, iTunes, & SecUpd 08-003. Ran QT (w/ restart) & iTunes no problem but the restart after running SecUpd failed: went to desktop background (only) just before usual "Welcome to OS X" box w/ progress bar. No menu, dock or icons. Ran Apple DU & TechTool, found/fixed minor probs, but same bad startup. Read much talk here sugg never use SW Update in auto mode (I never have) in favor of manual op 1 at a time, (I always have) avoiding wireless and/or slow downloads of any updates due to potential corruption in flight (oops, broke this rule, although update behaved correctly until bad restart), and obviously having a full HD backup avail, bootable clone preferred. And this Mac didn't! Yikes! Can't really undo a SW update unfortunately, and took one member's post advice on doing an Archive & Install, I kept the "Preserve Users..." box checked and voilá of course back up and running. On another post's advice, downloaded the large 10.4.11 COMBO update (never done that before, always incremental) at an actually very highspeed local internet cafe and ran that to tremendous success. Most everything preserved or moved to new System & Apps folders. Only had to swap the new Mail for original one in "Previous Sys" folder, reselect specific dial-up # from list, move couple other Apps & Utils to the new locations, and restart again. Dreaded it, but OS X came thru for me! However, only the initial Archive/Install of older version from DVD would have been possible without my laptop to get the Combo download to fix the desktop 2000 miles from home. 180mb on a dialup? ha-ha. Plus it had use-proven folder of all updates since 10.4.11 Combo release ready to go via thumbdrive. Perhaps you have a Mac-friend with a laptop? Good luck. It's all voodoo anyway, with myriad possible inter-related criteria, but thanks again to others...

  • Samsung laser printer software updater gone haywire?

I upgraded to Mountain Lion several months ago.  I've had the same Samsung ML-2850 printer attached to my system for over 2 years.  All of a sudden about a week ago, through nothing I've done, I get a window popping up randomly asking if I want to update the ML-2850 software.  If I click "yes" it says there's no software available (which is correct, per the Samsung support web site).  If I click "not now" it goes away, only to pop back up randomly several times a day.
I've been in Software Updater and can't find any way to stop this.  I've been to the Samsung web site, and I have (and have had) the latest driver for well over a year.
How do I get it to stop this new and very irritating habit??
    Tks!
    B

Thanks for the link.  Here's the part of the thread that helped me...
What worked for me was telling it which printer to print to on that server by, instead of clicking the IP item to add the printer:
    1. On the Mac, when Adding a Printer in System Prefs, right click on the toolbar, selectCustomize Toolbar..., and add the 'Advanced' item (looks like a gear)
    2. Now, when adding a printer, select that Advanced item (looks like a gear). Select from the drop down 'LPD/LPR Host or Printer', and URL: islpd://(ip address of your printer)/(name of printer) So for example, if your shared printer's name is RW-240 you would use lpd://10.0.1.1/RW-240 using the specific IP of your PC and printer name. Then select your Driver as usual and add.

  • Nokia Software Update gone wrong?

    Hey guys,
I'll try to be brief enough to avoid boring you. I started this thread off in the wrong forum apparently, and am told this is the correct place.
Basically, my PC Suite software has been rendered unusable, because every time my device attaches to it, it crashes. It appears to crash every time it synchronizes. And I can't stop it from synchronizing, for example, I destroyed the sync configuration on both the software and on the phone, and it still displays the synchronization complete message on the phone, and the PC Suite software crashes.
This was all working 100% yesterday.
I assume the problem has been caused by me updating the phone software, new version tag:
    V 06.01
    20-05-08
    RM-198
    (c)Nokia
    PC Suite software 7.0.7.0
Has anyone else experienced anything like this?
The issue is apparent whether I connect the phone using the USB cable, or bluetooth,
    the phone is a 6085
Thanks in advance for any insight.

  • Software update gone bad

I started uploading the iso6 or whatever that is. Before it was done I had to leave the house so the update just stopped when I got out of my home wifi network. Whatever I do the "apple" logo just stays on in th emiddle of the screen. When I got back hom I tried plugging it into the computer and launching itunes, but Itunes did not recognize the device. I have tried rebooting it several times which takes the "apple" logog away for a few second then it comes back on. Even if I hold the sleep button to turn it off, nothing happens. I am at a total loss. Obviously I should have let the iso6 version 6 update finalize before leaving the house, but if anyone has any input to help me it would be appreciated.

    Dr. Nugs:
Have you tried downloading the standalone update and installing?

  • Safari is gone after software update

I have 4 users setup on my imac. Last evening I performed a software update per Apples suggestion...safari was one of the updates. Now today safari is gone. When any of the 4 users attemtps to select the icon, a grey question mark appears. If I go into Finder and search for safari, the only thing that shows up are 2 safari folders with safari.elm and safari.inf in them.
I am new to the mac, and went to mac from pc to avoid thit type of stuff..what happened???
    thanks

    Hi,
I am new to the mac, and went to mac from pc to avoid thit type of stuff..what happened???
No idea! The most plausible is that one of the users simply deleted the program by accident/unknowingly.
The Finder doesn't search all locations, so can you try running this command in the terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal) and post back what is returns? It simply lists out any files/folders with Safari in the name:
    find / -iname 'safari' 2> /dev/null

  • After Software update, settings went default. all safari bookmarks gone!

I did the typical software update like usual and when I restarted my computer, all of my settings, bookmarks, menu bar, and other little things were all put back to default.
the reason I'm mad is because I had hundreds of important sites/pages bookmarked on safari and now they're all gone.
any chance I can revert to previous settings for everything? It took me forever to tweak the computer to the way I like it.
Could anybody give me a reason on why it would do this? I've had my macbook since may 2006 and its never done this after an update.
I think the updates were quicktime, battery and possibly security. there were three.
    thanks again.

Well, I do encounter similar problems as your ever since the update. If you had backup your safari bookmarks, perhaps you can restore your previous setting back (hopefully you did). If you didnt, I know of this software call CopycatX which is far more better that Backup (as it claims), not only duplicates all of your harddrive, but it does recovery as well.
For more information or trying its trial version if you like to over this site: http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=7.

  • Help! Performed software update, now emails and account info gone.

Yesterday morning I performed the software update (Java, couple of security updates, QuickTime), and restarted.
Essentially, every e-mail received between early November 2006 and yesterday is gone. All folders created since then (and since I have started a new business, there are a lot), as well as new account info (new provider for second business, separate from first) is gone, or at least missing in action.
I've been backing up monthly, but for some reason there is no backup since one in January, and Backup (the software I've been using) apparently can't restore even that one – not that that will solve more than a small part of the problem.
ANY suggestions on retrieving the missing emails will be gratefully received, as well as any ideas on how this happened in the first place.
    Victoria

Problems arising right after installing a system update are usually the result of some filesystem corruption that should have been fixed first, or not having installed the update properly (e.g. applications running while installing it), or having ignored Apple’s "Important: Please read before installing" warnings, etc.
Although you may have lost the account settings as a result of some preferences file corruption, you shouldn’t have lost any actual messages or mailboxes. Have you tried searching for them in Spotlight? In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Can you see the missing mail there?
If the messages have really been deleted for some reason, and they are not on the server and you don’t have a backup, your only option in the case of Mail 2.x is to try to salvage as many deleted *.emlx files as possible with a data recovery tool such as Data Rescue II, TechTool Pro, or FileSalvage. Of these, the only one I know for sure that can currently recover deleted *.emlx files is FileSalvage. Stop using your computer right now if you want to try that, as anything you do with the computer may cause the deleted files to be overwritten.
And you should also verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described in the following article, in case there is something amiss in the filesystem that has a bearing on what happened:

  • All contacts gone after phone software update by O...

Here's another one for you: after performing a software update from within Ovi Suite with automatic backup before and restoration afterwards, the following is missing from my C3-01 phone: 1. All contacts are gone (yikes!); 2. The main view settings are back to default, not what I selected. Fortunately I was able to restore the contacts from a previous backup so BEWARE: before updating, make sure you have a separate manual backup since the automatic restoration performed by the Ovi Suite does NOT deliver.

Furthermore, the selected group tones are gone and all back to Default. It appears these are not part of a backup...

  • Restart unsuccessful and screen gone back after software updated

I just got my iMac back from the store for hard drvie replacement programme. When I back home, I used the original OS install DVD to start up my computer, all went smoothly till the software update check, I tried to updated the software and restart the computer as per request, but the screen gone black and my computer never can start up again. What's going wrong? Can anyone help?

    Hello,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • Ran software update and now all my bookmarks are gone.

I ran a software update and when I opened Safari I noticed all my bookmarks are gone. I located the Bookmarks.plist and it shows nothing of my old (2 1/2 years worth of) bookmarks in it. Is there any way I can get them back or am I toast?
    Any help would be great.

    You may be toast.
Do you have any backups of your system, or at least your user library file?
Have you used Spotlight to search your system? The installer via Software Update updates the app, however leaves the Safari folder in the User Library alone. If for some reason you moved this folder, a new one would be created when you started up Safari after the update.
    Please post back.
