Software Updates keep failing

Have been trying to install my software updates - namely security update 2009-005 and itunes 9 on my intel mac and verification keeps failing. the message i get is that the digital signature is invalid and the file may have been corrupted or tampered with since being issued by apple. i have tried downloading the update directly from the apple website as someone suggested and also downloading them just one at a time but get the same problem. my computer seems to be blocking them - can anyone help??

Welcome to the forums!
General advice on updating:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
The 10.4.11 Combo Updater for PPC Macs is here: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_4_11_Combo_Update__PPC
And for Intel Macs: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10411comboupdat eintel.html
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.4.11 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta. If Safari 3.1.2 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 3.0.4 (or worse still, version 2) when running 10.4.11 or 10.5 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.1.1 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, and may entail you having to reinstall an earlier operating system.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
• /Library/InputManagers
• ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

  • My 3rd generation Apple TV software update keeps failing to install

My apple tv is hardwired to my modem and I have the top tier Roadrunner internet access, but every time I try to install, the download bar gets almost all the way across and slows down at the very end. After a couple minutes it comes back with a message that the install failed. I have tried everything on screen, as far as restarts, and trying again and I can't get a successful update. Probably about 10-15 attempts to date.  All previous updates have gone through without a problem til this most recent one. I'd apprecciate any help or suggestions.
    Thanks

The solution sounds strange, but it works: Unplug your ethernet cable and connect Apple TV over WiFi. Then the update will be performed properly and you can connect the cable again afterwards.

  • Why updates keep failing since 10.9.2 to 10.9.4 (blank screen)?

I'm IT manager with 60+ Apple computers (mostly iMac and laptops) all running Mavericks and since 10.9.2, the automatic system updates keep failing on a few of my computers (10-12 computers out of 60). Users launch the system updates when they leave office by the night and when they come back next morning, login screen is black and there's only a moving cursor! No matter if you reboot, safe boot, verbose or EVEN reinstall OS (I tried it once), it's still the black login screen.
This problem is highly discussed on the web and there's an easy fix to force update to continue and succeed... but as IT manger I am very tired to fix manually several computer every time Apple release a system update!! For people who's wondering, the fix is to power off computer, restart in safe mode (shift key), then type your admin account, hit TAB and type your password within the black screen then after a few try the display will light up and update will continue and succeed after a final reboot.
I am just wondering why updates keeps failing since 10.9.2, also in 10.9.3 and still in 10.9.4...  it's not happening on specific Mac model/year and my computers are not "ghosted" (restored) from disk image on each other... there's no link between the computers who's failing and those who succeed to update!! They are in different department of the business and they are not having same software installed. Few are for office work (Ms-Office) and other are graphic design (Adobe) or video. Almost all users are non-admin but a few are admin and both admins and non-admins are failing!
If you have some hints for me, I'll be very appreciated since I lost so much time to manually relaunching the update. Thx!!

The article is quite interesting. Quite a Mea Culpa from Apple!
Translated, the article says -- if you get any of these errors, iTunes and/or IOS have corrupted your device to the point where it cannot be recovered. You must reinitialize (i.e. restore from backup) your device.  -- excetp that the first step "Copy your backup" is less than informative or useful.
Under OSX, the mentioned location contains nothing but a bunch of files named with a string of digits.
Yes, I know what they represent and how to translate them -- howver, I pitty joe-user with no experience with OSX.
The bulk of the article is for Windows systems. Very little information in that article applies to OSX.
The funny, but sad, thing is the first thing they tell you to do is to update OSX and iTunes and security software -- when in fact that is what cause the problem in the first place. Granted the articles pre-date the OSX/iTunes updates which caused the problem.
However, all of that blather ignored -- the article does NOT address my problem.
    Unless it really does.
I have no issues (apparently) with successfully backing up my iPhone. At least iTunes claims that it is being successful.
What is failing is the second half -- the Sync.
OF course, that is if you belive iTunes -- which, according to the /Library/Logs/MobilBackup/MobilBackup.log, has in fact NOT happened now since January!
    Very interesting.
    Thanks for your suggestion.
    However, I continue to hunt.

Some online resellers still have Snow Leopard in stock, but their prices are ridiculously high (Amazon.com is one). So your best bet is to call Apple; they will sell it for about $20 US as long as they still have stock.

That's a strange one. I'd be inclined to repeat the post in the OSX forums here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=235
There may be more people adept as reading crash logs there.
I would repair permissions were it my computer and Disk Utility hadn't been use to repair permissions in a long time. That's an easy thing to do as a fast check and does no harm. Be aware that Leopard throws out a lot of meaningless messages when doing RP. You can ignore them, including the ominous-sounding "WARNING: SUID error" lines.

  • HT5654 Update keeps failing on Win 7 Pro

How can I update iTunes when the update keeps failing?

It could just be that there are a lot of people trying to download at the same time Judith, I had a similar issue when iOS 7 was initially released - it took me about 4-5 attempts to download it.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.

  • Software update Keep downloading iWork 2013

I have downloaded all 3 (Page, Keynote and Numbers)
but software Keep showing them as beeing ready to download
Strangely, if I double click on a document, it would try to open into the older version (still on disk)
I had to open the new version of the App first and then select the file from there
I was about to correct that with command-info
but  I though software update keep ask me to update  because the older version was still there.
    So I trash them.
    still the same problem
I know the receipt have been changed so i dont know how to check them now.
Any suggestion on how to tell the system I do have the update version.
    Thank you

    Any solution to this?
I've just updated to Mavericks and have updated the iwork apps. However, I keep getting the app store howing they need updating.
It concerns me that this problem is still here 3 months on.

This software update keeps popping up almost everyday in my iMac 27 although I keep updating. Looks like the either the update is not happening on my machine or some other problem. Anyone else know of this? Everytime I check for updates (I have the setting to manual check), an alert pops up in Apple store with the phrase "Lexmark Printer Software Update 2.11" available for download.
Is there a way I can turn off this notification for Printer updates until it is resolved? It is pretty annoying.
    Thanks

Not sure this will help yet, having just noticed it myself, but you can now get the Lexmark driver 3.0 for download here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1397
I'm going to give that a try to see if I stop getting the constant reminder for 2.11.
